“I’m never gonna be that good of a parent”: Embarrassing ‘Modern Family’ Episode Ty Burrell Wanted to Show His Daughter Has Aged Like Fine Wine
Image
Modern Family on Hulu tops the list when it comes to a blend of tight writing, ensemble brilliance, and emotional nuance. In an interview (via The Paley Center for Media), creator Steven Levitan talked about one scene in Season 3 that had absolute honesty and an emotional resemblance. Even actor Ty Burrell shared his thoughts on that particular scene, saying,

It’s a lot of pressure watching a show like that and realizing I’m never going to be that good of a parent. I’m basically just gonna show when, when my daughter loses her virg*nity, I’m just going to show her the episode.

The actor who portrays Phil Dunphy further said that,

“Aren’t I great, aren’t I great? We all learned a lot, didn’t we?”

Over its 11-season run, Modern Family didn’t just reflect about modern families, but also challenged sitcom conventions with...

“We predicted it”: Modern Family Star Julie Bowen Reacts to Viral Coldplay Kiss Cam Featuring Astronomer CEO Andy Byron
Image
One of the internet’s latest obsessions involves a now-viral moment from a Coldplay concert, and it’s not about the music. The drama kicked off when Astronomer CEO Andy Byron was caught on the venue’s Kiss Cam with Chief People Officer Kristin Cabot, casually cozying up with his arm around her. The moment they realized they were on camera, both quickly pulled away, only fueling online speculation.

Social media lit up, but what made things even funnier was how closely the moment mirrored a classic Modern Family scene from Season 1. Fans immediately drew comparisons, with clips of the sitcom circulating alongside the concert footage. And now, Julie Bowen, who played Claire Dunphy, has hilariously weighed in on the uncanny resemblance, claiming Modern Family “predicted it” long before it went viral.

“It’s like doing a math problem while doing Rubik’s Cube”: Agonizing Work ‘Modern Family’ Showrunners Put to Bring Show’s Over 750 Storylines to Life
Image
Managing over 750 storylines of a sitcom show sounds terrifying, doesn’t it? Well, Modern Family sure did it throughout its eleven seasons. Yep, you heard it right. Of course, that’s a massive challenge for the showrunners- balancing dozens of characters, their evolving relationships, and intertwining arcs, which all require incredible focus and creativity.

And no, it wasn’t just about writing funny moments; it was about keeping the story consistent, meaningful, and engaging across hundreds of episodes. As creator Steven Levitan perfectly described it (via The Paley Center for Media),

You’re thinking so hard it’s, you know, like doing a math problem while doing a Rubik’s Cube.

Well, that kind of intense multitasking went into every episode, as the team worked to give each character a distinct voice and arc. Despite the complexity, the show perfectly managed to deliver heartfelt humor and relatable stories that resonated...

Modern Family Star Jesse Tyler Ferguson Reflects on Criticism for 'Stereotypical' Gay Role
Image
Modern Family was considered a progressive show during its time on air, but it still received criticism sometimes for its gay characters.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson played one of those characters - the uptight lawyer Mitchell Pritchett - and he's opened up recently about the criticism that was leveled at him in particular. Ferguson is gay himself, but not everyone liked his portrayal of Mitchell. He spoke about it on his popular podcast Dinner's On Me.

"One of the pressures I've always felt, specifically after being on a show like Modern Family, where I'm portraying a gay man on a television show, on a network that is as popular as it is," the actor said, "you receive criticism, as you do, with anything you do, but the criticism that I think I heard the loudest was always from the gay community, feeling as if, maybe, I didn't represent their idea of what a gay relationship was,...

“More of a voyeuristic kind of experience”: Genius Way ‘Modern Family’ Creators Cracked the Sitcom Code Will Blow Your Mind
Image
There have been hundreds of sitcoms over the years, but only a select few have managed to redefine the genre. Modern Family wasn’t just another family comedy, it was a revolutionary mockumentary-style sitcom that breathed new life into an old format. The brainchild of Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan, the show blended relatability with innovation in a way few others dared to try.

In an old interview, co-creator Christopher Lloyd explained how the series came to life and how the duo consciously set out to build something truly modern. From breaking away from sitcom cliches to giving the show a unique visual identity, the creative process behind Modern Family was nothing short of brilliant.

Modern Family is a show like no other

Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan had one clear goal when they sat down to create Modern Family: they didn’t want to make a cookie-cutter sitcom.

Ty Burrell’s Forgotten Marvel Stint May Have Made the Greatest ‘Modern Family’ Cameo Possible
Image
Throughout its 11-year run, Modern Family emerged as one of television’s favorite sitcoms. Following its debut in 2009, Modern Family quickly endeared itself to the audience for its quirky yet heartwarming storyline.

While the show’s stellar cast and mockumentary style narration were enough to endear the show to the audience, Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan’s creation also shone for its numerous cameos.

Though most of the show’s memorable celebrity guest appearances happened once the ABC sitcom entered its latter half, the first half of Modern Family was also dotted by a few cameos. One among them is Edward Norton’s cameo from the first season, which went down in the show’s history as one of the most memorable moments.

‘Did all the same stuff without zero justification’: Real Reason Why ‘The Office’ Crew Couldn’t Stand ‘Modern Family’ Success
Image
Since the release of The Office, the documentary-styled sitcom theme has become very popular in the US. That’s what gave birth to shows like Parks and Recreation, Arrested Development, and even Abbott Elementary. But while most shows explained the reason behind their mockumentary format, Modern Family received some side-eyes for never giving a solid reason why cameras were all up in the Dunphys’ business.

Turns out, while The Office spent years explaining the why, how, and awkward silence of the mockumentary style, Modern Family just swooped in and cashed in on the idea. And quite naturally, that did not sit well in Scranton. Sure, both shows became comedy gold, but The Office crew took some offense at Modern Family’s sneaky success.

Why Modern Family Star Ariel Winter Disappeared From Hollywood
Image
It's never easy to be a child star. Even if you have a healthy, stable home life, it can be difficult to deal with the highs and lows of fame as a juvenile. That's not counting the work schedules, trying to keep up with schooling, and still trying to be a kid, so it's not always surprising when super successful child stars drop out of the limelight for at least a little while upon reaching adulthood. Young women have to try to reconcile growing up with their fandoms, which can be incredibly difficult, while also trying to pave a career and a way forward for themselves. For "Modern Family" star Ariel Winter, it was all just a little bit too much.

The actor, who portrayed academic overachiever middle daughter Alex Dunphy on the long-running hit ABC sitcom, seemed to disappear from Hollywood entirely for a while after the end of...

Alleged Subtle Homophobia in Modern Family Despite The Show Featuring Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet’s Same Sex Romance
Image
Modern Family fans aren’t gonna like this! But the show that earned our love and appreciation is alleged to have gotten away with homophobic content. Yes, the same show that was groundbreaking in portraying a same sex couple as its central characters.

Well, it isn’t just the subtle homophobia that was pointed out by a fan. They also alleged that the sitcom had some racist and misogynistic content. Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd’s ABC sitcom followed the lives of the diverse Pritchett family.

Jay Pritchett, the patriarch of the family, is married to his second wife, Gloria, a Latina woman. Claire, his daughter, is married to the lovable and goofy Phil Dunphy. And Mitchell, Jay’s son, is gay and married to Cam. While Mitchell and Cam’s relationship gets a lot of praise, the fan noted the amount of homophobic content made at their expense.

“I’m disgusted”: ‘Modern Family’ Co-creator Didn’t Shy Away From Calling Out Fox Over Its Most Demented Association
Image
Modern Family has not shied away from getting political when it directly impacts the lives of its characters. The show wrote California’s legalization of gay marriage into the series, with an episode centered on Mitchell and Cameron proposing and eventually getting married. However, the politics of the creators did not stop there.

Co-creator Steven Levitan was extremely vocal about President Donald Trump’s detention of children of immigrants during his first term. It hit closer to home when Fox News’ presenter and noted conservative commentator Laura Ingraham called the detention centers ‘summer camps’ for children. Modern Family Cast Salary for First Episode and Season Finale Revealed: The Difference Is Huge
Image
First airing in 2009 and never looking back, Modern Family is a mockumentary-style comedy series about one big, chaotic, endlessly relatable extended family. Created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan, the show follows the lives of three wildly different households all linked by the Pritchett clan—think awkward dad jokes, too-honest kids, and of course, family drama to fuel several group chats. From over-the-top birthday parties to questionable parenting choices caught on camera, Modern Family turns everyday family life into a hilarious, heartwarming documentary we’re all low-key glad isn’t about our own relatives.

The show, since its premiere, became a fan favorite and would go on for 11 seasons, showcasing its immense success in the sitcom world. It was an instant hit due to its fresh premise, quick wit, brilliant writing, and spectacular job by cast, helping them secure multiple accolades and dominate the ratings in that category. 15 Best Modern Family Episodes Ranked
Image
In an age of sitcom reboots and sequels, is it too much to ask for one more season of "Modern Family" at some point? The hit ABC sitcom with a stellar ensemble cast ran for 11 seasons between 2009 and 2020, and it will likely be remembered as the last family sitcom to dominate broadcast television before streaming gobbled everything up. It explored the love lives, parenting styles, and relationships of three couples within the same non-traditional (at least by 2009 standards) family tree.

Sadly, unless that rumored Rob Riggle spin-off somehow presents co-creator Steven Levitan with his golden opportunity to write the next great multi-cam sitcom, we've likely seen all we ever will of the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker-Marshall family. But before you rush off to watch one of the many great shows that followed in its footsteps, let's revisit the 15 best "Modern Family" episodes -- ranked by humor, heart, and how much they made us...

'I Really Flopped': Ty Burrell Recalls His 'Unfunny' Modern Family Audition
Image
Ty Burrell won two Emmys for his performance in TV's Modern Family. He recalled how farfetched this achievement seemed when he auditioned for the show; he failed at the get-go, and the studio executives were hardly impressed.

Ty Burrell faced an uphill battle before he landed his role in Modern Family; he was almost dropped from consideration after leaving ABC executives unimpressed. "I really flopped the first test," he revealed on the Dinner's on Me podcast. Admitting his initial audition was too "stiff", he added the studio heads were scathing with their feedback. "'He's not funny,'" he recalled one comment. It was fortunate that series creators Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan were on Burrell's corner. They developed the character of Phil Dunphy while thinking of Burrell. He still had to convince the creative heads, however.

“We definitely shoot two different shows”: ‘Modern Family’ Success Is a Miracle When Its Co-creators Refused to Be Friends After First Season
Image
Modern Family, no doubt, stands as one of the most successful sitcoms of the past decade, drawing audiences back for multiple rewatches. The key to this success lies in the unique and occasional collaboration between its co-creators, Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan. Their innovative partnership has been instrumental in shaping the show’s exceptional success.

Despite the show’s growing popularity, the duo’s partnership had not always been smooth. In fact, their working relationship has been described as more of a distant agreement than traditional creative collaboration. That somehow worked well for the show’s long success.

At the heart of Modern Family‘s success was the unique dynamic between Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan. The pair’s contrasting approaches to storytelling and production led to an unorthodox working style that kept the show fresh and unpredictable.

“I couldn’t love that cast more”: ‘Modern Family’ Creator Makes His Stance Clear on Reboot After Sofia Vergara Demanded a Revival

ABC’s groundbreaking hit, Modern Family, came to an end after 11 years in 2020. Although there was a farewell special episode included in the final season, many fans have been wondering if there might be a chance of the cast reuniting for the series soon. It is not exactly an uncommon demand in today’s landscape, as Hollywood seems to be obsessed with the idea of sequels and reboots these days.

Speaking on the same, Sofia Vergara once stated in an interview that she would love for the entire cast to come back on set together again. Interestingly, a Modern Family creator seems to have a different idea on the matter entirely.

In fact, after witnessing his magic on screen for over a decade, no fan could even imagine him not playing the character in the first place. However, that was exactly what was about to happen after he failed his screen test for the role in the worst way possible.

The duo join previously cast Miles Fowler, appearing in two episodes as Noah’s (Brody) basketball teammate, who gets set up with Morgan; and Leighton Meester, who will guest star in an episode as Joanne’s middle school nemesis.

“We get it, all right, good, go”: Ty Burrell Wasn’t ‘Funny’ Enough for ABC but His 1 Scene Was So Good They Kept It in ‘Modern Family’ Pilot
Image
Ty Burrell’s Phil Dunphy had been one of the fan-favorite characters in Modern Family. Rightfully so, as the actor masterfully played the role of chaotic, and goofy suburban dad to a dot in the groundbreaking sitcom.

As such, someone else portraying that character doesn’t even bear to think about it for many fans. Interestingly, though, that is exactly what was about to happen as the ABC executives were staunchly against casting Burrell for the character.

To gain their approval, Ty Burrell along with the writers came up with such a fun idea, that they kept that sequence in the pilot episode of Modern Family.

Adam Brody Teases “Repercussions” For Rabbi Noah In ‘Nobody Wants This’ Season 2 Following Move To Prioritize Love Over Work
Image
After debuting to critical and popular acclaim last September, Netflix’s rom-com series Nobody Wants This is getting very close to the start of production on Season 2. So what can star Adam Brody tease?

“Very little,” he admitted tonight, in conversation with Deadline on the SAG Awards red carpet. “I think repercussions from [Noah] choosing maybe love over work. He’s going to grapple with that. That’s about as much as I know, to be honest with you.”

Created by and exec produced by Erin Foster, Nobody Wants This explores the unconventional romance between Joanne, a candid agnostic podcaster portrayed by Kristen Bell, and Brody’s unconventional rabbi, Noah Roklov. Inspired by Foster’s relationship with husband Simon Tikhman, the show’s Season 1 finale saw Noah at a crossroads, as Joanne decided, after much contemplation, against converting to Judaism, in a move that leads to the couple’s breakup.

Fowler is set to guest star as Noah’s (Brody) basketball teammate, who gets set up with Joanne’s sister Morgan, played by Justine Lupe.

Created by Erin Foster, Nobody Wants This follows an agnostic podcast host and an unconventional rabbi on the rebound walk into a party. When they walk out — together — the unlikely pair, Joanne (Bell) and Noah (Brody), can tell there is something between them. However, filming it hasn’t always been a piece of cake. Marc Freeman’s book about the show, which featured interviews from the cast and crew, noted a similar incident where there wasn’t a dry eye left on set during the filming of a scene.

Moreover, showrunner Steven Levitan, too, noted how everybody became so emotional for that particular scene. Unfortunately, it wasn’t long before that scene turned into reality breaking everyone’s hearts.

Modern Family’s greatest scene left everyone with aching hearts

After 11 continuous years, it is inevitable that the cast members would form a makeshift family for themselves on set. As such, when the...

“I was being disrespected by ABC”: ‘Modern Family’ Was Nearly a Disaster Before It Began When the Studio Was Dead Against Casting Ty Burrell
Image
Following its premiere in 2009, the sitcom quickly became a fan favorite, blending humor and emotion while exploring family dynamics over its 11-season run.

Ty Burrell in Modern Family | Credit: ABC

One of the most beloved characters in the series is Phil Dunphy, who is known for being the fun and goofy dad in Modern Family. However, the actor Ty Burrell almost missed out on landing his iconic role. The show came close to facing a major setback, as the network was initially opposed to casting the Emmy-winning actor in the remarkable role.

“He’s not a good TV dad”: Sorry ‘Modern Family’ Fans, Phil Dunphy’s Worst Flaw Was Sidelined That Made Claire Look Like a Villain

Portrayed by Ty Burrell in the hit sitcom Modern Family, Phil Dunphy has long been known for being one of the most goofy and fun-loving TV dads. And fans adore the character for his endless optimism and quirky parenting style. However, the same character traits also become his glaring flaws, especially with respect to how they put his wife, Claire, in the position of the strict parent.

Although the show does portray Phil’s flaws in a light-hearted and humorous way, the impact of his naivety and lack of responsibility often falls on Claire’s shoulders, making her character appear less sympathetic and more controlling.

“That might take the audience out of it”: ‘Modern Family’ Was Wise to Not Entirely Copy ‘The Office’ for Its Best Segments of Comedic Genius
Image
The Office wouldn’t have been as much fun if Michael Scott didn’t let the viewers in on his bizarre thought process and the pranks he was going to pull on his employees. At the same time, Mitch’s eye roll to the camera in Modern Family was an impactful yet humorous reaction given the format the show undertook.

Breaking the fourth wall was considered huge in the past with actors on screen looking at the camera and talking to the viewers directly. However, with the rise of the mockumentary concept in TV, creators have taken advantage of letting the audience know the characters on a deeper level.

But there’s a difference between how The Office and Modern Family used the mockumentary concept in the series. Read on to know more.

“We wanted him but the network didn’t”: ‘Modern Family’ Creator Had to Convince Studio to Cast Its Best Actor Who Was Once Homeless
Image
There’s no way we can imagine Modern Family in any other format or with different actors than the ones who ended up playing the respective characters. It feels wrong to mess with the show that left a lasting legacy in television.

However, when the creators of the show, Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd look back on their time in developing the show, they can recount numerous challenges that hindered their progress.

One such challenge? Finding the right cast for the show. Considering it’s an ensemble series, the creators wanted each actor to bring authenticity to the table and truly embrace the essence of the diverse characters.

“It doesn’t make sense to sit here and debate”: The Real Life Divorce That Killed ‘Modern Family’ After Near Flawless Initial Seasons
Image
The ABC sitcom Modern Family is one of the most popular entries in the genre. The show focused on the Dunphy-Pritchett-Delgado-Tucker family and their shenanigans as an extended dysfunctional family in LA. The series won several awards, including the Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series five times.

While the series was received positively throughout its eleven-season run, the consistency in its style seemed to drop off in the later seasons. Many shows begin to fumble after a while but the main reason for Modern Family’s problems can be chalked up to the creative ‘divorce’ between co-creators Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd.
