Doctor Who's Time Travel Praised By Astrophysicist, Accidentally Accurate To Science

An astrophysicist makes a surprising claim about the lore of Doctor Who, revealing that the long-running show is spot on about one thing surrounding how time works. For almost 60 years, the iconic BBC sci-fi series has taken audiences on an adventure in space and time, from when humanity first learned to make fire to the final days of the planet Earth. Doctor Who will celebrate its 60th anniversary through a number of special episodes and other smaller productions in late 2023.

With Doctor Who journeying to the '60s and the Regency era in season 14, one astrophysicist has made a surprising claim about its depiction of how time functions during an interview with Reuters. When discussing how black holes can demonstrate time dilation, University of Sydney astrophysicist Geraint Lewis stated that Doctor Who's discussion of how time functions may be an accurate description, even quoting a line from David Tennant's Tenth Doctor.

Quasar 'clocks' show Universe running 5 times slower soon after Big Bang

Sydney, July 4 (Ians) Scientists have for the first time observed the early universe running in extreme slow motion, unlocking one of the mysteries of physicist Albert Einstein’s expanding universe.

Einstein’s general theory of relativity means that we should observe the distant — and hence ancient — universe running much slower than the present day.

However, peering back that far in time has proven elusive. Scientists have now cracked that mystery by using quasars as ‘clocks’. Quasars are the supermassive black holes at the centres of early galaxies.

“Looking back to a time when the universe was just over a billion years old, we see time appearing to flow five times slower,” said lead author Professor Geraint Lewis from the School of Physics and Sydney Institute for Astronomy at the University of Sydney.
