Oscar-Nominated Ukraine War Documentary ‘Porcelain War’ To Screen At Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center In DC

Exclusive: Three years ago today, Russia launched its hellish full-scale invasion of Ukraine, an unprovoked assault that has killed and injured more than 40,000 Ukrainian civilians, according to the Un.

As the war enters its fourth year, there is news about the Oscar-nominated documentary Porcelain War, which tells of the resistance to Russian aggression by artists and civilian soldiers. The film directed by Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev has been selected to screen on March 31 as part of the Stories That Matter series at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center in Washington, DC.

The series, created in partnership with the Johns Hopkins Graduate Film and Media program and the Cineteca Di Bologna, will welcome the directors and producer Paula DuPré Pesmen for the screening followed by a conversation with Johns Hopkins experts.

‘Daughters’ to Launch ‘Stories That Matter’ Film Series at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Center in Partnership With Cineteca Di Bologna (Exclusive)

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Center in Washington, D.C., has partnered with Italy’s prestigious Cineteca Di Bologna on a curated film screenings’ series called “Stories That Matter” that will launch with Oscar-shortlisted documentary “Daughters.”

The powerful Netflix doc, which follows four girls as they head toward a special daddy-daughter dance date with their imprisoned fathers, will kick off the series in the center’s Washington theatre on Feb. 21 with co-director Angela Patton in tow. Patton, who is also the CEO of Girls for a Change, will participate in an onstage conversation following the screening.

The curated Stories That Matter program will span U.S. and international cinema “at the intersection of art, scientific discovery, urgent social issues and international affairs,” according to a statement.

The series “intends to cultivate robust public dialogue between filmmakers, scholars, students, government officials, policy stakeholders, and citizens,” the statement said.

Vera Farmiga and Andy Gacia Take a Tour With ‘Admissions’
They’ve both been (literally or figuratively) screwed by George Clooney onscreen, and now they’re combining forces on a project that should let either take more of a center stage. According to THR, Andy Garcia and Vera Farmiga will be leading the romantic comedy, Admissions, which Adam Rodgers is directing.

As a starting point, this project should not be confused with the Tina Fey and Paul Rudd-led comedy Admission, which starts production sometime next month. The project at hand has Farmiga playing a “free-spirited mom taking her driven daughter on a walking tour of a beautiful small college.” Garcia will appear as the “buttoned-up heart surgeon who’s taking his son on the same tour.” (What a coincidence!) Neither can maintain some sort of bond with their respective child during this time, but a spark soonsets off between the two.

Live-action shorts vie for Oscar nom
  Ten live-action short films -- ranging from director Juanita Wilson and producer James Flynn's "The Door," which looks at a Russian father and daughter, to director Tristram Shapeero and producer Daniel Jewel's "Sidney Turtlebaum," about an eccentric gay Jewish man in London -- have been shortlisted for the best live-action short film Oscar.

On Friday, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences released the list of ten, from which three to five nominees will be chosen.
