Big Trouble in Little China: The Greatest Cult Film of All-Time?
Image
I come from the video generation. People today have their pick of whatever they want to see online – legally or not – so one can’t say there’s a lack of available stuff. In fact, I’d wager no movie, no matter how obscure, is totally impossible to find nowadays. But let me take you back to a time before the internet, when things weren’t so easy to find. In the eighties and nineties, we had video stores, where you could rent video tapes for a day, and were limited by the inventory, which is why everyone had at least two or three video stores in their circuit to hit. Each place had different things. Without the internet, renting older movies was a real crapshoot, especially if they were obscure, but sometimes you’d find gold.

Such was the case when, at thirteen years old, I walked into my local video store,...

10 Marvel Movie Quotes That Aged Poorly
Image
Superhero movies are some of the most quotable around; however, some lines from Marvel films have not aged well over the years. Be it in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which started in 2008 with Iron Man and has no ending in sight, or the rest of the live-action Marvel films, heroes and villains have had some quotes that continue to look worse as time passes.

These quotes do not necessarily have to come from bad films, as some of them are from a few of the McU's best movies. That said, there are various reasons that contribute to Marvel movie quotes aging poorly. Sometimes, a line worked for the time the movie was released, but it lost its meaning with the years. There are also cases where other movies in a franchise quickly made quotes feel dated, and some lines should never have been uttered in the first place, looking even worse now.

House II: The Second Story (1987)
Big Trouble in Little China (1986) – The Best Scenes
House II: The Second Story (1987)
After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, and the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek shifts his focus over to the works of John Carpenter with the latest episode in his The Best Scene video series. The Carpenter classic Lance is looking at with this one is the 1986 action extravaganza Big Trouble in Little China (watch it Here) – a movie that’s so good, he couldn’t pick just one “best scene”. He narrowed it down to three options, and you can hear all about them in the video embedded above.

In the video, Lance covers the opening gambling scene with our heroes Jack Burton and Wang, the alley battle scene that...

John Carpenter suggests Big Trouble in Little China would be a fun video game
Image
Legendary director John Carpenter is currently doing the press rounds to promote his new unscripted TV series, John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams (you can read our review at This Link), and during an interview with ComicBook.com he was asked which of his films he thinks would make for the best film-to-video game adaptation. His answer: the 1986 martial arts fantasy adventure Big Trouble in Little China (watch it Here)!

Here’s the direct quote from Carpenter: “I think, maybe Big Trouble in Little China, it seems to me would be a fun video game and kick ass. There’s also, by the way, a Thing card game. I mean, there’s a lot of these games. There’s actually a They Live game. I don’t know that there would ever be a Prince of Darkness game. I don’t see that.“

Now that Carpenter mentions it, it’s kind of...

Big Trouble in Little China Was Released in Theaters 35 Years Ago Today
Image
Big Trouble in Little China was released in theaters 35 years ago, and fans of the John Carpenter classic are celebrating the occasion. Directed by Carpenter and starring Kurt Russell, the movie is widely considered to be among Carpenter's best work. It has built up a very strong cult following in the three-and-a-half decades since it premiered in theaters, and it's clear from the celebrations we're seeing on Twitter that the classic movie is just as popular as ever.

"Happy 35th birthday to Big Trouble in Little China, one of my all time favorite flicks," writes one fan on Twitter, posting a behind-the-scenes image. "Jack Burton is a knucklehead thats within us all. And we all look at Kurt Russell the way Victor Wong does."

It’s a relatively quiet week for home entertainment releases, but Tuesday is playing host to one of my favorite films of the year, Ready or Not, which makes December 3rd feel like an early Christmas to this writer. Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for December 3rd include Boar, Christmas Presence, Game of Thrones: The Complete Eighth Season, Game of Thrones: The Complete Series, and 1 Must Fall.

James Hong Reflects on Playing Lo Pan in Exclusive Bonus Feature Clip from Scream Factory’s Big Trouble In Little China Collector’s Edition Blu-ray
While John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China is infinitely quotable thanks to Kurt Russell's performance as the imperfect protagonist Jack Burton, every great reluctant hero needs a great villain, and James Hong's portrayal of the evil Lo Pan gave us a character who is just as memorable as his truck-driving counterpart. With Big Trouble in Little China coming to Blu-ray like never before in a new Collector's Edition on December 3rd from Scream Factory, we've been provided with an exclusive bonus feature clip featuring Hong to share with Daily Dead readers!

Taken from "The Soul of Lo Pan" bonus feature on the Big Trouble in Little China Collector's Edition Blu-ray, our exclusive clip below features Hong reflecting on some of his most memorable moments playing Lo Pan, including how Carpenter and his crew used practical effects and ingenuity to pull off Lo Pan's glowing transformation and floating ability.

'Big Trouble in Little China' Returns as a Comic Book from John Carpenter
While 80s movie fans await the inevitable news that Big Trouble in Little China will be either remade or rebooted as a franchise with a younger, handsomer Jack Burton, it was announced today that director John Carpenter is returning to the 1986 cult classic starring Kurt Russell, only this time in comic book form. That's right, ol' Jack Burton will live again in a series of all-new adventures featuring some of the movie's best characters. Coolest part is, it picks up with Jack's hideous hitchhiker as seen at the thrilling climax of the original movie, creating what is essentially a true sequel that takes place at Wang's wedding. In stores June 4th!

Here is the official press release and cover art gallery:

‘Big Trouble in Little China’ Review (Arrow Video)
Stars: Kurt Russell, Dennis Dun, Kim Cattrall, James Hong, Victor Wong, Kate Burton, Donald Li, Carter Wong, James Pax | Written by Gary Goldman, David Z. Weinstein | Directed by John Carpenter

When you have favourite movies it always comes as a surprise when you hear that they bombed on original release, even more of a surprise when you learn that most of its failure was down to being buried by the film companies. This is the case of Big Trouble in Little China, a movie that now has such a cult following that it’s hard to see how it could have failed. Luckily for us we have Arrow Video to give us a Blu-ray steelbook release to truly celebrate the film.

Jack Burton (Russell) is the ultimate American hero, in his own mind. When he finds himself in the middle of gang warfare in Little China between the forces of...

Review: Marvel’s The Avengers
Many of the comment that follow are lifted directly from a blog post I wrote after seeing Marvel’s The Avengers opening weekend. I stand by these words and note that I have since then seen it in 2-D in a theater and on my home screen via the just-released Combo Pack. The movie is so well-crafted as to remain entertaining on repeated viewings.

Disney Home Entertainment has released this in a dizzying assortment of collections, some exclusive to certain retailers, such as the Walmart one that comes with a graphic novel by Peter David and an army of artists. The four-disc commercial set comes with the 3-D and 2-D Blu-ray discs, standard DVD, and digital copy. This one also has a link to download music inspired by the film. What I was sent for review is the slightly less spiffy two disc set (Blu-ray and DVD) but it is certainly sufficient.
