Josh Trank got a lot of positive attention for his directorial debut, the 2012 found footage superhero movie Chronicle… then nearly destroyed his career with his follow-up, the disastrous 2015 Marvel Comics adaptation Fantastic Four. He came back with the 2020 biopic Capone, which went straight to VOD during the Covid lockdown. Now, Trank is in production on his fourth feature film, an independent horror thriller called Send a Scare, which has Robbie Amell (Code 8) and Victoria Justice (Depravity) in the lead roles. Deadline reports that Amell and Justice are joined in the cast by Matt Gomez Hidaka, whose credits include Eddington and Silo. Details on the character Gomez Hidaka is playing have not been revealed.

Actor Matt Gomez Hidaka, who appears in Ari Aster’s Eddington, has joined the cast of horror thriller Send a Scare, Deadline reports today.

The actor joins previously announced cast members Victoria Justice (“Victorious,” Fun Size) and Robbie Amell (The Babysitter, “The Flash”).

Josh Trank (Chronicle, Fantastic Four) is set to direct from a script he co-wrote with Andrew Ryan.

The film centers on an interactive horror startup that gives thrill-seekers a way to send scares to friends and family… but when potential investors host a demonstration, the experience gets hijacked by a real masked killer with a deadly agenda.

Shudder has acquired Push, the new film written and directed by David Charbonier and Justin Powell. The horror streaming platform previously acquired Charbonier’s and Powell’s thriller The Boy Behind the Door in 2021.

The two creators, who have been friends since childhood, were interviewed by 1428 Elm after The Boy Behind the Door came to Shudder. During the interview, we talked about that film and their other horror/thriller The Djinn, which premiered around the same time.

Both of their previous films placed focus on kids, and both starred Ezra Dewey. The highly anticipated horror movie, which made its world premiere at the 2024 Sitges Film Festival and will make its U.S. premiere at Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California this weekend, will make its exclusive streaming debut on Shudder later this year.

In case you didn’t get your fill of Alec Baldwin and Salma Hayek’s zany relationship on “30 Rock,” the charismatic characters will be getting tipsy together in “Drunk Parents.” Noting the self-explanatory title, the film will find two empty nesters drinking their cares away after their daughter goes off to college; hilarity and bad decisions ensue. Allison Estrin and Henry Russell Bergstein are the designated casting directors for the feature. Fred Wolf will direct the New York–based production that’s looking to kick off in mid-January. Bryan Cranston is tackling Nathaniel Hawthorne in his next big-screen venture, “Wakefield.” The film, based on Hawthorne’s short story of the same name, follows a man who suddenly leaves his wife and disappears in an effort to detach from his life. A new television project from the former executive producer of “House” now has a casting director attached, Backstage has learned.“I Am Victor,” a drama pilot described as “House as a divorce attorney,” is set to be cast by Amy Lippens and executive produced by Katie Jacobs. Both Lippens and Jacobs worked on “House,” which ended its eight-year run on Fox last May.The new project, which is based on a forthcoming book from Norwegian crime novelist Jo Nesbø, centers on Victor Port, a powerful divorce attorney who will go to great lengths for his clients. Universal TV, which also produced “House,” is producing the pilot for NBC. The shoot dates have not been set yet.Lippens’ casting credits include the horror films “Saw” and “Saw II,” the TV series “Once and Again,” and the forthcoming film “The Moment,” starring Jennifer Jason Leigh and Alia Shawkat.

In the tradition of Bill and Ted and Wayne and Garth, meet the Deedles, a pair of surfer dude teen twin gremmie brahs (that's loser brothers in Deedlespeak) who get a chance to make a name for themselves when they're mistaken for park ranger recruits.

Very much a live-action cartoon, "Meet the Deedles" is innocuous and often amusing Disney fare, armed with enough pratfalls and scatological asides to keep the kids happy.

Given the scarcity of appropriate PG product out there, the picture could catch a bit of a wave, particularly with boys.

Debuting feature director Steve Boyum keeps the pace cranked for this fish-out-of-water story, in which the fish in question are Phil (Paul Walker) and Stew Deedle Steve Van Wormer), surfin' siblings who are forced to leave their beloved Hawaiian home when their dad Elton (Eric Braeden) sends them off to Camp Break Spirit in Wyoming to toughen them up.

Through a series of inevitable mishaps, the Deedles instead find themselves in Yellowstone National Park (although they keep referring to it as "Jellystone"), where the chief park ranger, Captain Pine (John Ashton), believes them to be experts in handling a prairie dog invasion threatening to put a damper on celebrations for Old Faithful's one billionth birthday.

Little do our heroes know -- and that's about what they know -- the

p-dog invasion was orchestrated by one Frank Slater (Dennis Hopper), a deranged former ranger determined to get back at his former employers by rerouting the famed geyser into another part of the park and renaming it New Faithful.

But quicker than you can say "Ore-ida!" and "Nutrageous!" (two of the brothers' pet expressions), the Deedles foil Slater's plans and the geezer geyser gushes once more.

What Jim Herzfeld's script may lack in overall originality, it makes up for inventive dialogue and situations, wisely using the sheltered innocence of his lead characters as the source of much of the humor. Unfortunately, things begin to get bogged down toward the end during the inevitable good-vs.-evil finale.

As Phil and Stew, Walker and Van Wormer keep the loopy sweetness of their TV-damaged characters intact, while old pros Ashton and Hopper avoid the easy temptation to go over the top, given the film's cartoony structure. As Ashton's stepdaughter and resident Jellystone babe, A.J. Langer plays a blossoming former tomboy effectively.

Shot extensively near Park City, Utah, the flora and fauna have been brightly captured by cinematographer David Hennings, and Steve Bartek's score ripples with the necessary surf guitar twang.
