Back in 2003, “Freaky Friday” hit theaters and became a certified Disney hit. Now, its sequel “Freakier Friday” is here and, perhaps to the surprise of some, is also in theaters. But making sure it ended up on the big screen was important to director Nisha Ganatra.
“Freaky Friday” grossed more than $160 million worldwide against a budget of $26 million. One might think that made a sequel inevitable but, in reality, it was “never” part of the plan, according to director Mark Waters. As the years went on though, Jamie Lee Curtis kept getting asked about one.
So, when she realized on the “Halloween Ends” press run that Lindsay Lohan had reached the age where she could believably have her own teenage daughter, Curtis called Disney CEO Bob Iger directly. From there the project snowballed, eventually coming to Ganatra.
She was thrilled, and when she was tapped to direct she immediately wanted to make it bigger.

Pop into the Hollywood shop The Record Parlour on any given day, and you will probably run across the soundtrack to the cult aerobic ’80s film “Perfect” starring John Travolta and Jamie Lee Curtis. The intimate store has all the vibes vinyl heads crave: boxes upon boxes of vintage records, along with some new releases mixed into the neatly organized sections.
It’s my go-to. I know I will always find something to scratch my collector itch among its copious piles. Just the other day, I was heading to my friend’s Diane Keaton-themed birthday party and needed to find a gift that somehow would work for that… enter The Record Parlour and, low and behold, an original copy of the “Looking for Mr. Goodbar” soundtrack.

Freakier Friday North America Box Office Day 3: Opening Weekend Update (Photo Credit – Instagram)
The verdict is out for Lindsay Lohan’s comedy film, Freakier Friday. The sequel’s opening weekend collection surpassed the previous film’s by a significant margin, which is a great start for the film. It lost the top spot to Weapons, but it does not matter because they have different target audiences. Keep scrolling for the deets.
The film received positive reviews from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes and their collective consensus states, “It doesn’t reinvent the original’s story so much as it swaps the formula around for a frothy good time, with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan easily slipping back into roles that fit them like mixed-and-matched gloves.”

Chad Michael Murray recently opened up about a serious health scare that inadvertently paved his way into the acting world.
Appearing on the Great Company with Jamie Laing podcast, the Freakier Friday actor recalled being hospitalized at the age of 15 as a result of twisted intestines, which led to life-threatening complications.
“I was hospitalized for two and a half months. It was a lot. We had surgery. I had internal bleeding, I lost 50% of my blood. I was on my deathbed,” Murray detailed, adding that he was “in and out of consciousness” during the hospital stay.
“I just remember seeing my father, the weakest I’d ever seen him, and a priest at the end of my bed, and they’re talking about last rites and all that stuff, and [the nurse, Sandy] gave me a blood transfusion to save my life,” Murray said. ”It saved my life.”

The bloodline was not the “Final Destination” after all. On August 8, New Line and Warner Bros. announced (via Variety) that “Final Destination 7” is officially in the works, complete with “Final Destination: Bloodlines” co-writer Lori Evans Taylor on board. Also returning are producers Craig Perry, Sheila Hanahan Taylor, Jon Watts, Dianne McGunigle, and Toby Emmerich. Warren Zide will serve as executive producer.
The news comes as the studio has yet another horror hit on their hands with “Weapons,” the latest from “Barbarian” director Zach Cregger. In its opening weekend, “Weapons” amassed an estimated $42.5 million at the domestic box office, an impressive debut for a movie that cost $38 million. Similarly, “Bloodlines” opened to $51.7 million in May off a $50 million budget. As of August 10, that movie has gone on to tally over $138 million in North America and $285 million worldwide, bringing in a gigantic franchise haul for the New Line devision of Warner Bros.

Update Aug. 10, 2025: Zach Cregger’s Weapons claimed the top spot at the box office over the Aug. 8-10 weekend, exceeding expectations with an impressive $42.5 million debut. The R-rated thriller from Warner Bros., backed by strong critical acclaim and premium format screenings, delivered a standout showing, solidifying itself as a late-summer hit. The film starring Julia Garner and Josh Brolin outperformed its initial projections of $30-$40 million, signaling that word-of-mouth and its eerie premise helped draw in thriller-hungry audiences.
Disney’s Freakier Friday followed, securing the second spot with $29 million. The highly anticipated sequel to the 2003 comedy landed within its expected range and leaned heavily on nostalgia to woo millennial fans, teens, and families. Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis’s much-hyped reunion propelled the film to a solid debut, though it ultimately fell short of the top spot.

Jamie Lee Curtis calls out a particularly negative Freakier Friday review on social media as the film hits theaters. Directed by Nisha Ganatra, the follow-up to 2003's Freaky Friday sees Curtis and Lindsay Lohan back as Tess and Anna Coleman, respectively, for more body-swap comedy.

Zach Cregger’s horror film “Weapons” opened at No. 1 in North America with an estimated $42.5 million, edging past Disney’s “Freakier Friday,” which launched to an estimated $29 million. The R-rated original leveraged strong word of mouth and an A- CinemaScore to top the weekend, while the PG sequel turned out families and nostalgia-driven crowds for a solid second-place debut.
The race took shape after a front-loaded Friday: “Weapons” generated $18.2 million on opening day from roughly 3,200 locations, while “Freakier Friday” drew $12.7 million. Those results followed robust previews of $5.7 million for “Weapons” and $3.1 million for “Freakier Friday,” setting the pace for the three-day frame.
Audience composition skewed differently for the two releases. Studio estimates show “Freakier Friday” drew a heavily female audience (about 74%), with millennials a major slice of turnout and more than a third under 25, signaling a cross-generational response to the 2003 hit’s continuation. “Weapons,” meanwhile, benefited from strong exit polling...

“Weapons,” a twisty horror film about a group of missing children, and “Freakier Friday,” a body swap comedy, delivered a potent one-two punch at the box office this weekend, lifting ticket sales as summer movie season draws to a close.
The films captured the top two spots on the charts, with “Weapons” debuting to $42.5 million and “Freakier Friday” premiering to $29 million. Last weekend’s champ, Disney and Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” surrendered its box office crown, earning $15.5 million in its third weekend of release for a third place finish. After starting strong with a $117.6 million bow, “Fantastic Four” has plummeted in subsequent weekends, falling more than 67% in its sophomore frame and another 60% over the past weekend. The superhero film has grossed $230 million domestically and will likely earn less money than “Superman,” the latest comic book adaptation from its rival DC Films.

The communal experience of seeing movies in theaters was on full display at the weekend box office as audiences across the country screeched, screamed and hollered together when watching New Line’s original horror pic Weapons.
Thanks to winning over critics and audiences alike, director Zach Cregger’s buzzy movie came in more than $10 million ahead of expectations to win the weekend with $42.5 million in yet another notable victory for New Line and parent company Warner Bros., as well as for original stories. Overseas, it also won the race with an equally impressive $27.5 million for a global debut of $70 million. The genre doesn’t usually travel well, but Weapons is an exception, scaring up strong results in normally horror-resistant markets in Europe and Latin America.

This article contains spoilers for "Freakier Friday."
While rom-coms have been enjoying a remarkable resurgence on streaming lately, they've only barely started returning to theaters after years of being seemingly banished to your living room only. It's about time, too; whether you need a break from the outside world or to decompress from the swirling thoughts in your head, nothing scratches that good itch quite like a rom-com. Indeed, "Freakier Friday" even features an up-and-coming Netflix rom-com star, and the results are as good as you would hope. In fact, you may even hear a murmur of surprise during your screening of the film when Maitreyi Ramakrishnan glides into frame.
For those who are not familiar, Ramakrishnan is the star of Netflix's small screen phenomenon, "Never Have I Ever." Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher's rom-com drama series, which ran for four seasons and is loosely based on Kaling's life...

Jamie Lee Curtis pushed back against a sharply negative appraisal of “Freakier Friday,” responding to a Time magazine review with an Instagram comment that read, “Seems a Tad Harsh. Some people Love it. Me being one.” Her reply landed Aug. 9 as the film expanded in U.S. theaters following a late-July London premiere. The review she addressed carried the headline “Freakier Friday Is Humiliating to Everyone Involved.”
The sequel reunites Curtis and Lindsay Lohan from the 2003 hit and reworks the body-swap premise across two generations. Anna, now a mother, and her daughter, Harper, switch places, while Curtis’s Tess trades bodies with Harper’s soon-to-be stepsister, setting off a chain of wedding-week complications. The film opened Aug. 8 in the United States.
Early ticket sales suggest strong audience interest. Industry tallies pegged the movie’s Friday take at about $12.7 million, with weekend estimates hovering around the low-$30 million range. That placed...

Lindsay Lohan is opening up about one of many hilarious moments in her new movie Freakier Friday!
The 39-year-old actress has several scenes with Chad Michael Murray, who plays her character’s ex-boyfriend, but for one scene in particular, she took some creative liberty and went a bit off script.
Warning: slight spoilers ahead!
Keep reading to find out more…
During one scene, pictured here, Anna (Lohan) is flirting with Jake (Murray), but it’s actually her daughter Harper after they switched bodies.
In the moment, the script apparently called for “light flirtation,” per EW, but Lindsay turned it up a notch and full on climbed on the table.
“That wasn’t there. None of that was there,” she told EW. “Yeah, I was like, ‘Can I?’ I almost fell off a few times, too!”
“I watched that scene with one eye open,” Lindsay joked, while admitting she told herself...

Jamie Lee Curtis is clapping back at a negative review of her new film Freakier Friday.
On Friday, Time magazine posted a section of their review of the long-awaited sequel of the 2003 film to social media, to which Curtis called “harsh.”
“No one, as far as we know, actually asked Disney for a sequel to 2003’s buoyant, surprisingly unsyrupy generation-gap comedy Freaky Friday. Ugly costumes, humiliating scenarios, and zero added value — this is a sequel with the sole purpose of cashing in on the fondness people have for the original movie and nothing more,” reads the post on Instagram. “The worst part is, Freakier Friday arrived in a pack of other sequels with genuinely fresh takes on their original source material.”
The Halloween actress reacted to the review by commenting, “Seems a Tad Harsh. Some people Love it. Me being one.”

Jamie Lee Curtis is not a fan of “Freakier Friday” slander. On Friday, the actress responded to Time’s review of the sequel to the original 2003 film and sharply noted, “Seems a Tad Harsh. Some people Love it. Me being one.”
The review in question was indeed titled: “‘Freakier Friday’ Is Humiliating to Everyone Involved.”
“No one, as far as we know, actually asked Disney for a sequel to 2003’s buoyant, surprisingly unsyrupy generation-gap comedy ‘Freaky Friday,'” Stephanie Zacharek wrote for the outlet. But in an interview with The Times published in July, Curtis herself directly contradicted that assertion.
“In every single city I went to, the only movie they asked me about besides ‘Halloween’ was ‘Freaky Friday’ – was there going to be a sequel?” she said. Curtis then called up Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, and told him what she’d experienced.

Jamie Lee Curtis is not afraid to let critics know what she thinks of their reviews.
Curtis recently starred in “Freakier Friday,” the sequel to her 2003 body-swap comedy “Freaky Friday.” The film sees her reprise the role of Tess Coleman alongside her original co-star and on-screen daughter, Lindsay Lohan. Although Lindsay Lohan says in an interview with Perri Nemiroff that director Nisha Ganatra said, "We're not doing Easter eggs," "Freakier Friday" has plenty of playful allusions to both the original movie and Lohan's career that will make any fan of hers and millennium pop culture smile. In Ethan Anderton's /Film review of "Freakier Friday," he praises director Nisha Ganatra and writer Jordan Weiss for using "callbacks and other returning characters sparingly and naturally." Anna rocks that iconic cherry-red guitar, Mr. Bates enjoys torturing his students, and we're still swooning over Chad Michael Murray's Jake. Over 20 years later, Anna isn't romantically involved with Jake anymore, which makes perfect sense, since most people don't end up marrying their high school sweetheart.

Although actors are often advised not to read the reviews, one critic’s takedown of Freakier Friday caught Jamie Lee Curtis‘ attention.
The Oscar winner, who reprises her role as Tess Coleman, recently called out Time critic Stephanie Zacharek for her “harsh” review of the Disney body-swap sequel to 2003’s Freaky Friday.

Despite Zacharek’s review, Freakier Friday is Certified Fresh with a 73% review average and 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, on track for a $30M-$32M opening.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains minor spoilers for “Freakier Friday,” which is now in theaters.
“Freakier Friday” takes place in the same sun-kissed version of L.A. as the 2003 “Freaky Friday,” where a girl can ride her bike to the ocean for a quick pre-school surf session. But this time, director Nisha Ganatra and production designer Kay Lee (“Insecure”) wanted to also showcase another side of the city.
The sequel picks up with Lindsay Lohan returning as Anna and Jamie Lee Curtis as her mom Tess Coleman, 22 years after their first body-swap comedy. Now, Anna has a teenage daughter of her own, Harper, played by Julia Butters — and more chaos ensues when Harper’s rivalry with her new stepsister-to-be (Sophia Hammons) gets totally out of hand.

Back in 2003, Lindsay Lohan was a budding pop star in her own right, and “Freaky Friday” put that on full display. But the actress eventually stepped away from both music and acting for awhile, so you might find yourself wondering if that’s really her singing again in “Freakier Friday.”
The sequel, in theaters now, brings Lohan back as Anna Coleman, who is no longer a rockstar playing with her band Pink Slip, but managing the careers of other artists. That said, the first few minutes of the film make it clear that Anna has never let go of her love of performing, and yearns to still make her own music.
Secretly, she does still make her own music. When a client needs a new song to perform, she stumbles across a demo of a song called “Baby,” that appears to be sung by Anna herself. Later in the film,...

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is no longer looming large over Hollywood, as Weapons has taken its first-place spot at the box office. A horror movie led by Josh Brolin (Archer Graff) and Julia Garner (Justine Gandy), it revolves around an investigation into the disappearances of over a dozen children. It debuted in theaters on August 8.
Weapons entered theaters alongside Freakier Friday, a sequel to 2003's Freaky Friday that sees Jamie Lee Curtis (Tess Coleman) and Lindsay Lohan (Anna Coleman) reprise their original roles. Like Weapons, it was released on August 8 and hoped to dethrone last week's #1 release, Fantastic Four: First Steps.
While the twin superhero releases, Fantastic Four and Superman, dominated July, alongside Jurassic World, August offers a change of pace. According to reports by Deadline and Variety, Weapons has had an extraordinary start to the weekend, earning $18.2 million on Friday to bring in a projected $40-$43 million start.

The Warner Bros. box office streak continues. Riding a high wave since the release of “A Minecraft Movie” four months ago, the studio’s winning ways continued this weekend with New Line’s “Weapons,” which earned an $18.2 million opening day from 3,202 locations — including $5.7 million from previews — and putting it on course for a $40 million opening weekend.
The sophomore film from director Zach Cregger is blowing past the performance of his debut film “Barbarian” both financially and critically. “Barbarian” was glowingly received by critics, but was tepidly received by opening weekend audiences and received a C+ on CinemaScore.
“Weapons” is not only set to eclipse the entire $40.8 million domestic run of “Barbarian” in just one weekend, but both critics and audiences are giving it a thumbs up with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 96% critics and 88% audience and a rare CinemaScore grade of A-.

“Weapons” has the upper hand in its box office duel against “Freakier Friday,” though both new releases are drawing strong openings as the summer tentpole season begins to wind down.
Opening on top, Warner Bros. and New Line’s “Weapons” added $18.2 million across Friday and preview screenings from 3,202 locations. The film has Imax and most premium large format auditoriums. Select screenings began Thursday afternoon at 2:17 pm, to match a key time that spurs the story — the hour when a group of children all awaken at once and mysteriously disappear. The movie sports an ensemble cast including Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Benedict Wong and Amy Madigan.
The horror now looks to come in well ahead of its pre-weekend projections, which had topped out around $30 million. That’s a great start for the R-rated original, which carries a production budget of $38 million. It’s also a huge...

The delightful "Freakier Friday" is in theaters this weekend, and it's a wonderful reprise for Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, as the two stars of the beloved "Freaky Friday" remake from 2003 return to the body-swapping formula. But this time they've got company, and it's not just "Weapons" at the box office.
Julia Butters (above left) joins the cast as Harper, the rebellious, surf-loving, teenage daughter of Anna (Lohan), and Sophia Hammons plays Lily, the daughter of Anna's soon-to-be-husband Eric (Manny Jacinto), who just wants to go back to her home in London, so she can study to be a fashion designer. “Freakier Friday” is chalk full of Easter eggs for devoted fans — it’s actually, essentially, a Russian nesting doll of winks and nudges, particularly when it comes to cameo returns from some of Hollywood’s favorite character actors. Stephen Tobolowsky is back manning detention. Both Rosalind Chao and Lucille Soong appear, too, reprising their roles from “Freaky Friday” as Chinese restaurant owners. There’s a pair of “SNL” favorites, Vanessa Bayer and Chloe Fineman, in supporting parts. The hilarious Sherry Cola is an announcer at the pickleball game.
But the real cameo highlight is undoubtedly Elaine Hendrix as Blake Kale. In the movie, she’s an editor at Rolling Stone. Fans, however, know that she’s also Meredith Blake, the supposed antagonist (there’s some debate) in 1998’s “The Parent Trap,” starring — ding, ding, ding — Lindsay Lohan as identical twins Annie and Hallie in her film debut.

Freakier Friday director Nisha Ganatra has ideas for a potential third installment in the iconic and campy body-swap franchise. Legacy sequels are all the rage nowadays, with movies like Liam Neeson's The Naked Gun and Jeff Bridges' Tron: Ares storming into theaters this year. Among them is Freakier Friday, a sequel to Disney's 2003 comedy hit Freaky Fridaystarring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan.
22 years later, Lohan's Anna is a single mother about to walk down the aisle. Unfortunately, her daughter, Harper (Julia Butters), and her fiancé's daughter, Lily (Sophia Hammons), hate each other. What better way to learn to get along than to wake up in someone else's body? This time around, there's a quadruple body swap involved, as Harper and Lily wake up in Anna and Tess' (Curtis) bodies, respectively.
Freakier Friday arrived in cinemas on August 7, and there's been no word on a follow-up just yet. Even so,...

Gen Z has been a hard problem for marketers to solve for almost half a decade now, as they mostly eschew traditional marketing mainstays like broadcast TV and movie theaters in favor of their favorite streamers and short-form video content. But when Zoomers really latch onto an idea, it can become powerful, just like it was for Millennials and Gen X before them. The most legible youth moment in pop culture right now is the Gen Z discovery of "Y2K" as an aesthetic, and brands all over are scrambling to capitalize on this tiny window of "cool." For "Freakier Friday," the choice to keep the film's style so close to "Freaky Friday" ends up being the movie's secret weapon, almost by accident!
Let's do some clarification here: The "Y2K Aesthetic" is defined by the Cari Institute as a fashion and design movement largely inspired by the 1990s and...

Made on a humble budget of $38 million, Zach Cregger‘s Weapons is already hurtling towards breaking even with $5.7 million in preview earnings and $25 million to $30 million collection on the opening weekend (Variety). Anything beyond the break-even point of $38 million will immediately count toward profit for the Josh Brolin suburban horror.
Despite being deeply embedded in the horror category, Cregger isn’t afraid of his film being too saturated for the genre. Instead, Weapons embarks on a journey to terrorize its audience with the story of 17 missing schoolchildren who simply vanish into the night for no reason, sending the townspeople scrambling for answers.

“Freakier Friday” is in theaters now, and as the title promises, things get even freakier this time around.
Directed by Nisha Ganatra, the sequel to 2003’s “Freakier Friday” sees Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reunited as Tess and Anna Coleman, respectively. Anna has a daughter of her own now, and is gaining a second one with her impending nuptials.
Of course, this leads to not just one body swap, but two — making for a 4-way switch in total. It can be hard to keep track of just that, let alone everyone around them, so we’ve gone ahead and done it for you.
Here’s who you need to know.

Dr. Tess Coleman is still a therapist, but these days she does her work via podcast.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps had a couple of weeks without any serious competition (though Superman and Jurassic World Rebirth posed a bigger problem than Marvel Studios likely expected), and now looks set to drop to third place in North America this weekend.
During Thursday previews, Barbarian director Zach Cregger's Weapons earned $5.7 million, with Disney's Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis-led Freakier Friday behind it at $3.1 million. The Fantastic Four: First Steps trailed both movies with $2.9 million, a decent enough hold that placed it ahead of The Bad Guys 2 ($2 million), The Naked Gun ($1.5 million), and Superman. ($1.4 million).
The latter continues to exceed expectations in the U.S., and appears to have connected with moviegoers in a way the latest Marvel Studios movie has not.
Heading into the weekend, it's looking like Weapons and Freakier Friday are going to be neck and neck. The latter is looking at a $27 million - $30 million haul,...

Fans have been asking for a Freaky Friday sequel for more than two decades, and the wait is officially over. Freakier Friday reunites Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis as daughter and mother — but this time, the characters’ lives have taken some big leaps forward.
In the new film, 22 years have passed since Anna (Lohan) and Tess (Curtis) swapped bodies in the original. Anna is now a mother herself, while Tess has become a grandmother. And in true Freaky Friday fashion, the chaos is doubled: Freakier Friday features not one, but two sets of body swaps, raising the comedic stakes and the emotional heart of the story.

The market is saturated with reboots and sequels, and a beloved IP doesn't always guarantee a good reception. Freakier Friday is a pleasant exception.
Over twenty years after Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan swapped bodies in the cult classic comedy Freaky Friday, the duo has done it again. Although the sequel came as a surprise, it has been extremely well received. Freakier Friday enchanted the audience and disagreed with the still-great assessment from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Freakier Friday debuted with a positive score from the critics, a high 80%. As more reviews came in, the sequel settled on a 73% approval score, with the Certified Fresh badge. That is a stark difference from the original's 88% Certified Fresh rating, and the audience score.
Freakier Friday divided the critics and the audience in the best way, as both gave the sequel positive scores. While the 73% rating from the critics isn't exactly encouraging,...

Few actresses can claim a career as varied as Jamie Lee Curtis, whose legacy continues to evolve with every new project. Though widely associated with horror, particularly her iconic role as Laurie Strode in the Halloween franchise, Curtis has never allowed one genre to define her, also carving out a unique space for herself in comedy.
Curtis made a powerful entry into film with 1978's Halloween, directed by John Carpenter. Her portrayal of Laurie Strode quickly made her a household name and a horror icon. Across six sequels, she shaped the archetype of the "final girl," returning in 2022's Halloween Ends to conclude a character arc spanning decades.
Beyond horror, Curtis' best performances have come in comedy. She brought sharp wit to Trading Places (1983), electrified audiences in James Cameron's True Lies (1994), and reached new heights with Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), which won her an Academy Award. However, her...
