Original ‘Shogun’ Director Jerry London to Helm Feature ‘The Art of Silence,’ About French Mime Marcel Marceau and How WWII Shaped Him (Exclusive)
Image
Emmy-nominated director Jerry London is set to shoot the France-set feature film “The Art of Silence,” about world-famous mime Marcel Marceau and how World War II shaped him as an artist.

This is ground covered, at least in part, by the 2020 Jesse Eisenberg-starrer “Resistance,” which depicted how Marceau helped thousands of Jews escape the Nazis. However, “The Art of Silence” will not “simply recount his acts of bravery,” according to a statement.

The project, now in development, is based on an original story by London written by Mary Krell-Oishi (“Paper Flowers”). “Art of Silence” will look to reframe the traditional Marceau wartime narrative by “focusing not on the battlefield,” but on how the horrors of World War II “informed the identity and artistry of a young Jewish man who would become the most powerful silent actor in modern history,” the statement added.

“The Art of Silence” is a family affair,...

Murderbot: Full Moon releases trailer for latest Jim Wynorski film
Image
Back in 1986, director Jim Wynorski brought us the cult classic Chopping Mall (watch it Here, check out our Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? episode on the film Here), which was about the robots that have been tasked with serving as the security guards in a shopping mall going on a killing spree. The original title for that movie was Killbots, and a while back it was announced that Wynorski was going to be directing a new movie called Killbots for Full Moon. It would have nothing to do with Chopping Mall, it was just going to be using that discarded original title. Well, the title plans changed along the way. The Wynorski / Full Moon project is now called Murderbot – and you can watch the trailer in the embed above!

Murderbot is scheduled to be released through the Full Moon Features streaming service on March 31st.

Leprechaun: How Jennifer Aniston, Halloween, and Wayne’s World Led to a Box Office Hit
Image
This article appears in the new issue of Den Of Geek magazine. Get your copy here.

In 1978, John Carpenter’s Halloween ushered in the era of the slasher movie.

The film was responsible for something else, too. Over the next 15 years, any number of weird and wonderful horror movies popped up inspired by notable dates in the calendar. Friday the 13th, Mother’s Day, My Bloody Valentine, and April Fool’s Day all cashed in on the concept.

It was against this backdrop that TV writer Mark Jones came up with the most brilliantly bizarre entry of them all: Leprechaun. “Back in the 1980s, there was a lot of advertising for Lucky Charms with this little leprechaun character,” Jones tells Den of Geek magazine. “It suddenly occurred to me that no one had done a St. Patrick’s Day horror movie. Everyone knew what a leprechaun was. Plus, they were...

Here Are All the Stars Who Almost Played Hannah Montana
Miley Cyrus attends City Of Hope Honors Halston CEO Ben Malka With Spirit Of Life Award - Red Carpet at Exchange LA on October 10, 2012 in Los Angeles, California.
Sweet niblets, can you imagine anyone other than Miley Cyrus playing Hannah Montana? Well, it almost happened.  Cyrus became one of the biggest stars of her generation when she landed the lead role in the Disney Channel series, which premiered in 2006. And the singer had to beat out "over 1200 girls" to play the titular character, according to the series' original casting director Lisa London. In an Aug. 17 TikTok, London decided to set the record straight about which actresses were in serious contention to play the undercover pop star. And one of them just so happened to go on to star on The CW's Gossip Girl and front her own rock band, getting her own version of the best of...

Aly & Aj Originally Offered ‘Hannah Montana’ Lead Roles, Pop Duo Claims
Image
Miley Cyrus became a superstar after playing the titular role in Disney Channel’s teen musical sitcom “Hannah Montana,” which ran from 2006 to 2011. But Cyrus wasn’t the only young actor who was considered for the lead role.

According to Aj Michalka, who comprises one half of the sibling pop duo Aly & Aj, former Disney Channel head Gary Marsh originally offered the part to her sister, Aly Michalka. Aj also claimed that the part of Lilly Truscott, Hannah’s best friend, was offered to her.

Aj shared the information in a post from the duo’s joint Twitter account, which references “Hannah Montana” casting director Lisa London, who revealed other actors considered for the lead role in a viral TikTok video.

“I adore Lisa London but I have some tea beyond the tea to spill. Gary Marsh originally offered the role of ‘Hannah Montana’ to Aly, and I was offered...

But now, Aj says that sister Aly nearly got the wig herself.   "I adore Lisa London but I have some tea beyond the tea to spill," Aj...

'Hannah Montana' casting director reveals who was almost cast for Miley Cyrus' role
Image
Singer-actress Lisa London, who served as the casting director on “Hannah Montana”, has revealed which two actresses almost won the role that made Miley Cyrus a star. London named the other young hopefuls who were in the running to play the teenage girl with a double life as a pop star and the names find their mentions in “Gossip Girl” and “Victorious”, reports ‘Newsweek’.

She posted a video on TikTok to correct another user who had claimed that the Mexican-Spanish singer Belinda had been one of the contenders for the Disney show.

“I’m actually the original casting director on Hannah Montana and I discovered Miley Cyrus,” London said in her clip quoted by ‘Newsweek’. “I wanted to let everybody know that Belinda, who’s lovely by the way, was never in the top three for the role of Hannah.

London then showed a piece of paper dated May 6, 2005, with...

From 1980 until 1994, The Cannon Group was responsible for the production of more than 200 films. Quantity, rather than quality, was the key to Cannon’s game: their output included many of the 1980s’ most beloved (and notorious) b-movies. Along the way they dipped their toes into every imaginable genre of movies, made stars out of Chuck Norris and Michael Dudikoff, kicked off the ninja and breakdancing crazes, and kept Charles Bronson working into the twilight of his career. The History of Cannon Films to be Told in New Book Trilogy
Menahem Golan in Mack the Knife (1989)
If you watched an action, sci-fi, or horror movie in the 1980s, there was a good chance it was produced by Cannon Films. The studio — perhaps the last great home of B-movie and exploitation classics — was founded in 1967 but hit its apex between 1979 and 1987, releasing scores of films that (mostly) no one would call high cinema but which delivered thrills, chills and plenty of blood, action, and fire on a budget.

Tapping into the massive market for both high and low concept fare — the 1980s equivalent of drive-in double bill fillers — Cannon, under the leadership of Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, were perhaps best known for churning out chintzy crowdpleasers like the Chuck Norris-starring Missing in Action and The Delta Force along with a slew of Death Wish sequels.

But the company also produced titillating titles like Lady Chatterley’s Lover, slasher fare such as Schizoid and New Year’s Evil,...
