Ridley Scott
Mixing Body Parts in Frank Henenlotter’s ‘Frankenhooker’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Ridley Scott
Want A Date?!

After taking a fresh look at Ridley Scott’s Hannibal (listen), dipping into Bad City with Ana Lily Amirpour’s A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (listen), and checking into Stanley Kubrick’s Overlook with 1980’s The Shining (listen), Trace and I are ready for another Frank Henenlotter title.

In 1990’s Frankenhooker, Jeffrey Franken (James Lorinz) can’t get over the horrible accidental death of his fiancée Elizabeth (Patty Mullen). As his grasp of right and wrong deteriorates, Jeffrey develops a plan to bring Elizabeth’s various parts back to life. It involves a significant electrical storm, an estrogen bath of limbs, and the perfect “parts” collected from New York’s sex workers.

Deftly mixing comedy and exploitation, Frankenhooker follows Jeffrey’s bumbling attempts to resurrect his girlfriend, the explosive results of “super crack,” and the dangers of pursuing “the perfect body.” It’s a true Henenlotter classic!

This '80s Crime Movie Spoof Has One Of The Strangest Premises Of All Time
Image
The concept for James Lorinz's proposed crime movie "Swirlee" makes for a strange elevator pitch. Do you remember Mister Softee? Kids on the East coast likely know about him. He was the smiling mascot of a local ice cream truck company, a man with a gigantic soft-serve ice cream cone for a head. Well, what if Mister Softee was a real human being whose ice-cream-head was the result of a rare medical condition? Also, what if he was in deep with the mob? It's like Martin Scorsese's deeply personal fave "Mean Streets," but with an ice-cream-head man! It practically writes itself! The title? "Swirlee!"

That was the thought of actor and filmmaker James Lorinz in the late 1980s. Lorinz may be best known for playing Jeffrey Franken, the lead character in "Basket Case" director Frank Henenlotter's seminal classic "Frankenhooker." He also played a doorman in the revolting...

Frankenhooker (1990) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
There are certain types of media that could have only come from one person. Something so specific and out there that only a beautiful, twisted mind like director Frank Henenlotter could have conjured it. Today, we’re talking about one of those movies. A movie that answered a question we’ve all asked at some point in our lives… ”What if Frankenstein were a hooker?” This is the story of what happened to Frankenhooker.

Director Frank Henenlotter hit the streets of New York City for his follow up to Brain Damage and Basket Case with a hankering for something different this time around. His newest film would stay in and around the horror genre of course but would lean further into the comedy aspect of his writing prowess. The idea of which came from an improvisation that took place at a pitch meeting for an entirely different film. According to Henenlotter,...

Love Bomb Review: This Mystery Thriller's Poor Execution Overshadows What Could've Worked
Image
The film, directed by David Guglielmo from a screenplay by Kathy Charles, really wants us to get in the mood for whats to come. But I dont think theres anything that fully prepared me. Love Bomb goes beyond expectation, centering a trio of characters who all have one thing in common the Love Bomb dating app, which is unlike any dating app out there. Imperfect performances and a thin premise negatively affect the film. Guglielmo and Charles certainly try to do something different with its story, but its the execution that needs a lot of work.

Frankenhooker Is the Only Movie Ever to Get an S Rating
Image
To quote the immortal words of Fidget from John Waters' scathing dark comedy Cecil B. Demented about the movie industry, "Hey, Hey, MPAA, how many movies did you censor today?" While many don't give much thought to the movie rating system, it has long been held in contention by many filmmakers and fans for their controversial choices and obvious biases in what they deem acceptable.

Still, the Motion Picture Association tends to stick to a pretty strict set of rules in their ratings. You have the current system of G, PG, PG-13, R, and Nc-17. So, when a '90s horror comedy that parodied Frankenstein got an "S" rating, it was out of character for the MPAA and angered the director. The movie in question is Frank Henenlotter's Frankenhooker. We will look at what happened with Frankenhooker to earn it an "S" rating, and how the film overcame the...

The Best ’80s Horror VHS Cover Art
Chuck McCann
Don’t get me wrong, streaming is great. You can’t complain about the convenience of pulling up a movie without having to leave your bed. But there’s one thing that we’ve lost in our post-rental store age: cool movie covers. Sure, Netflix will display algorithmically designed thumbnails, and trailers for movies play above Redbox kiosks. But gone are the days of the crinkly Disney clamshell or the lenticular image of Jack Frost shifting from a smiling snowman to a Shannon Elizabeth-attacking beast.

As that last point indicates, no genre is hurt more by the end of the rental store than horror. No longer did those looking for depravity need to leave their homes to visit shady cinemas in Times Square or dusty drive-ins. Now, they could go to the rental store and plan their own double-feature. To appeal to those amateur programmers, production companies commissioned incredibly eye-catching VHS covers,...

Have Yourself A Spooky Shudder Valentine’s Day
Denise Richards at an event for Madea's Witness Protection (2012)
Suppress your bitter aching loneliness this holiday by watching some very anti-Valentine’s Day cinematic relationships on Shudder! We here at Trailers From Hell have culled through all of the least romantic flicks currently showing on that spookiest of movie streaming platforms, and found some intriguing viewing fodder if you’re less-than-receptive to the typical amorous pablum.

Valentine (2001)

This hokey slasher, starring such staples of the early aughts as Denise Richards and David Boreanaz (plus a pre-Grey’s Anatomy Katherine Heigl). A serial killer wanders the streets of San Francisco (with a Los Angeles interlude) wearing a creepy marble Cupid mask, using a variety of slick household items, including an electric drill and a hot iron. Not the healthiest form of romantic self-expression for our Cupid.

White Zombie (1932)

The Haitian-set Bela Lugosi horror classic so memorable it inspired the name of a multiplatinum hard rock band five decades later! In White Zombie,...

The Bottom Shelf: Frankenhooker, We Are The Flesh

Lucio Fulci, Frankenhooker and more in our round up of new horror Blu-rays and DVDs...

So, what’s your personal idea of hell? For this writer, it would almost certainly involve being chained down in the audience of an eternal live filming of Loose Women as Donald Trump waves a slice of tiger bread, forever just out of reach. Yours is likely to be similar, though it would have to be pretty grim indeed to come anywhere near Lucio Fulci’s 1981 career-best infernal vision and perhaps the definitive (obviously other than Little Nicky) cinematic depiction of eternal damnation, The Beyond.

18 Things We Learned From the ‘Frankenhooker’ Commentary
Genre comedies remain a tough combination to pull off, but when they work the results can include all kinds of ridiculous and messy fun. One under-appreciated gem is Frank Henenlotter‘s 1990 romp, Frankenhooker. As is probably evident in the title the movie is a tongue in cheek riff on Mary Shelley’s classic Frankenstein following a young scientist’s efforts to fix his girlfriend after she’s killed in a tragic lawnmower accident. It’s a top to bottom comedy that tells its story with a great sense of humor and liberal nudity — and without a single drop of blood. So naturally it was unable to secure an ‘R’ rating from the MPAA and had to enter the marketplace unrated. Over the years it’s gained somewhat of a well-deserved cult following, and when the UK’s Arrow Video put together a cleaned-up Blu-ray of the film they also produced a new commentary track for the release...

Shivers (1975)
12 Off-Beat Valentine's Day Movies
Shivers (1975)
February is upon us which means an endless barrage of Valentine's Day reminders. But not everyone is a fan of Hallmark holidays.  This February 14th, you can snuggle up with someone special and watch The Notebook, or you can check out these twisted and not-so-feel-good tales of love and physical affection.

The "Crazy in Love" Category

Haute Tension (2003)

Despite its one gaping flaw (those who have seen it know exactly what I mean), this popular French horror is the bleakest, bloodiest tale of unrequited love since the works of Shakespeare. It follows a young woman as she desperately tries to rescue her friend who has been kidnapped by a serial killer. When I think of lovelorn psychos, the final shot of this film definitely comes to mind.

The Loved Ones (2009)

When a lonely Australian girl is turned down for prom by her crush, Brent, she takes matters into her own hands.

'Frankenhooker' Blu-Ray Review
by Colleen Wanglund

Frank Henenlotter’s comic take on Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein has finally been released on Blu-ray thanks to Synapse Films.

When Jeffrey Franken (James Lorinz) loses his fiancé Elizabeth Shelly (Patty Mullen) to a horrible mulching accident at a family birthday party he becomes obsessed with bringing her back. An amateur bioelectric technician with dreams of grandeur, Jeffrey gathers the pieces of Patty’s mutilated body and sets his twisted plan into motion.

Jeffrey needs some fresh parts to add to the pieces of Elizabeth, so armed with a “special” drug Jeffrey makes his way over the bridge and into Manhattan where he lines up a party of hookers. All he has to do is pick the best parts of each girl. No problem, right? The party swings into high gear but Jeffrey begins to have doubts about what he’s doing. It’s too late, however as the hookers,...

Jeffrey Franken is a science whizz and a med school droput. He’s also a man in love. Disc Spotlight: Frank Henenlotter’s ‘Frankenhooker’ on Blu-ray
Director Frank Henenlotter is a bit of an acquired taste. His films, including the Basket Case trilogy and Brain Damage, mix horror, comedy and low-budget special effects with mixed results, and the thing they have most in common is their offbeat tone. 1990′s Frankenhooker isn’t his best known film, but it deserves to be thanks to a funny script, some ridiculous effects pieces and a perfectly pitched and wonderfully off kilter lead performance. Jeffrey Franken is a bright young man with an assured future and a thick Jersey accent, but when his girlfriend Elizabeth Shelley is killed in a freak lawnmower accident he loses it all. Well, he keeps the accent. He also keeps Elizabeth’s head. The Movie: “The vivacious young girl was instantly reduced to a tossed human salad. A salad that police are still trying to gather up. A salad that was once named Elizabeth.” Jeffrey (James Lorinz) spirals into despair, but...

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Frankenhooker’
Frank Henenlotter’s Frankenhooker hits Blu-Ray this week and we are proud to get an advance look at the Blu-Ray. For those of you that were actually around when video stores were around, you might remember this film not because of the title of the name of the film but probably because of the cover art and, for some of you lucky few, the audio activated button on the front that said “Wanna Date?” Previously released on DVD by Unearthed Films, Synapse brings us the high-definition release of Henenlotter’s early 90′s entry of comedic horror.

Frankenhooker stars James Lorinz (Street Trash) as Jeffery Franken, a medical school reject whose fiancee, played by Penthouse Pet Patty Mullen, is horribly killed in a accident by the hands of one of his creations – a remote controlled lawnmower. Feeling responsible for her death, Jeffery decides to use his knowledge of science to good...

NYC's Anthology Film Archives Presents Frank Henenlotter Film Retrospective
Some people just have a knack for certain things. Michael Jordan could play basketball like there was no tomorrow, Sam Kinison was a master of comedy, Bobby Fischer could hold his own in chess and Stu Ungar knew his way around a card table. In that vein Frank Henenlotter had his niche as well…making outrageously over-the-top and wildly entertaining films.

Anthology Film Archives is celebrating the career of Henenlotter on November 4-6 in New York City with a retrospective presentation of some of the writer/director’s most memorable works. The films to be screened are certainly standouts of ‘80s horror: Brain Damage, Frankenhooker, Basket Case and Basket Case 2. Quite the Murderers’ Row of celluloid!

And to add to the excitement of the three-day event, Frank Henenlotter himself will be in attendance for the screenings. You can get a chance to meet the man and ask him, “What...

Frankenhooker hits Blu-ray!
Synapse are on the ball once again. Having already lined up a Blu-ray release for Maniac Cop and the recently released The Exterminator they now bring us Frankenhooker. Frank Henenlotter, who also gave us the terrific Basket Case and Brain Damage movies, directed Frankenhooker back in 1990 so this is going to be a treat for fans of HD sleaze when it hits on November 8th.

When Jeffrey Franken’s fiancée is chopped to pieces by the blades of a remote-controlled lawnmower, he uses his dubious medical knowledge to try to bring her back to life. He reassembles his beloved Elizabeth using the body parts of New York City’s finest prostitutes, and resurrects her during a heavy lightning storm. Unfortunately for Jeffrey, his dear Elizabeth’s brain is scrambled and she

runs amok on 42nd Street, turning tricks and bringing high-voltage death to

The Sweet Life – DVD Review
The Film:

Not to be confused with Disney’s The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, The Sweet Life offers a fast-paced, comic romp through the love lives of several characters in Lower Manhattan. Billed as “a romantic comedy for people who hate romantic comedy” (an esoteric audience at best), the story revolves around the love lives of four characters: the heroic columnist Michael (James Lorinz of King of New York, Frankenhooker), his scummy brother Frankie (Robert Mobley), their common girlfriend Lila (Barbara Sicuranza of Anamorph) and her roommate Sherri, played by the rocker Joan Jett. In scripting characters, Lila would have made a better Sherri as the two brothers “share” her–but not in a kinky way. Anyway, the protagonist Michael is a likeable enough character (think Rex Harrison in a modern My Fair Lady), but one certainly out of this element. Always ready with a bon mot, he is...

New Release: Frankenhooker Blu-ray
Release Date: Nov. 22, 2011

Price: Blu-ray $24.95

Studio: Synapse Films

Patty Mullen hits Times Square as Frankenhooker.

Following his 1982 midnight movie favorite Basket Case to Blu-ray is Frank Henenlotter’s 1990 cult horror-comedy movie mash-up Frankenhooker.

Frankenhooker‘s nutso story tells of medical school dropout Jeffrey Franken (James Lorinz, King of New York) and his lovely fiancé Elizabeth (Penthouse Pet Patty Mullen), who, insanely enough, is chopped to pieces by the blades of a remote-controlled lawnmower. Using his dubious medical knowledge to try to bring Elizabeth back to life, Franken reassembles his beloved using the body parts of New York City’s finest prostitutes and resurrects her during a heavy lightning storm. Unfortunately, Elizabeth’s brain is scrambled and she runs amok on 42nd Street, turning tricks and bringing high-voltage death to her customers!

Synapse’s uncut Blu-ray version of the movie offers a new 2K high-definition transfer created from original vault materials and digitally remastered 5.1 surround sound,...

Name That Scene: This is your Life
For those of you…I mean All of you that listen to Fangoria Radio Friday nights on Sirius 108/Xm 139 I have a favor to ask. One thing I’ve gathered from talking with a lot of you on Twitter and when you call into the show is that you’re not just sitting on the couch watching horror movies and listening to our little show. Well, maybe that’s what you’re doing every Friday but the other six days of the week it seems that most of you are busy building something; being creative in some capacity whether its film or music or…ahem…writing. So children of the night I was hoping to start, with a little help from my fiends, a little bit of a brainstorming session.

Due to the overwhelming response to the now classic tracks known as “Tony’s Bloody Stump” and “Debbie’s Back!

The Eternal Graphic Novel Preview
The producers of the upcoming feature horror film The Eternal have announced development of a full-length graphic novel prequel to their film entitled The Eternal: Final Dawn, and this looks like some good gore-soaked reading!

The novel, written by Justin McConnell, Kevin Hutchinson, and Adam Kenneth Wilson and illustrated by Justin Erickson (Rue Morgue Magazine), represents the first step in offering a unique immersive experience for an independent film, as out of the twelve total issues, the first six will be offered online in monthly installments, entirely free and coming later this year. Canadians will get an early glance at the project as it will be previewed at the upcoming Rue Morgue Festival of Fear in Toronto. For now a teaser of the graphic novel can be found here.

"The Eternal: Final Dawn tells the life (and undead) story of Samuel Gradius, born in 1463 Scotland as Samhairle Greme. Twelve chapters tell his journey,...

'The Eternal' Scores Cult Actor James Lorinz
Canadian producers Unstable Ground are hard at work packaging and developing The Eternal, and have some new exciting news. The first cast member has agreed to join lead Adam Wilson in this foray into madness and bloodletting. Highly-talented character actor James Lorinz (from the cult-hits Frankenhooker and Street Trash) will play a major role in the film. This film will mark Lorinzs return to the genre, his first horror-related film since the early 90s. Lorinz was my first choice for the character, it was tailored for him, stated director Justin McConnell, his performance in Frankenhooker is so acclaimed for a reason.

First bit o’ casting news for Canadian vampire film ‘The Eternal’.
It has only been a few days since we announced local boy Justin McConnell and the folks at Unstable Ground were preparing the follow up to their short film Ending the Eternal which would be aptly titled The Eternal. A quick recap of the film in question.

Samuel Gradius has lived too long. In his 500 years on earth he has seen empires rise and fall, changed the course of history with his bare hands and experienced countless revolutions first hand. Samuel Gradius is a vampire, perhaps the only vampire, and he’s had enough. He wants to die.

No longer content with the idea of simple suicide, he makes the decision to go out in the ways of old. He wants a warrior’s death. The Eternal follows Samuel on the pursuit of his own personal oblivion, he hopes, at the hands of someone worthy.

So now we can add...

Frankenhooker Star Returns for The Eternal
We just got a heads-up from the guys behind The Eternal, the feature film version of the kick ass short “Ending the Eternal” that’s in pre-production now, that the first casting decision has been made; and it’s unexpected to say the least!

James Lorinz, he of Street Trash and Frankenhooker fame, will make his return to horror taking on a “major role” in Eternal. “Lorinz was my first choice for the character; it was tailored for him,” director Justin McConnell said in a press release. “His performance in Frankenhooker is so acclaimed for a reason.”

They’ve also nabbed Rob Kleiner, whose Chicago-based bizarro band Tub Ring was a staple of my youth, for scoring duties, along with Matthew Dewilde (Stir of Echoes 2) and Geoff Hill (Land of the Dead) for the film’s pyro and practical effects.

Hopefully the casting will continue along these strange, unexpected lines...
