The Shudder streaming series The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs is currently deep into its seventh season – and now, for the first time, the show is set to receive a physical media release! Fans recently started noticing listings for The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs Blu-rays and DVDs showing up on sites like Amazon and Target – but there wasn’t accurate artwork, so it was a mystery what this 4 hour and 55 minute release would be. Now, the proper artwork has been unveiled, revealing that this is a double feature of the Joe Lynch-directed films Suitable Flesh and Mayhem! This double feature is set to be released on October 14th… and it appears to be limited quantity, because Amazon is currently sold out of the Blu-ray edition. Hopefully they’ll be restocking soon.

This article contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" season 3, episode 4, "Through the Lens of Time."
The latest episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," called "Through the Lens of Time," sees the discovery of an impossibly ancient temple located underneath a mountain. Although its age is mind-boggling, the technology embedded in the temple still works. In order to gain access through its nostril-like entryway, Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) has to insert her hand into a blood-extracting device. Ancient temples, ineffable technologies, and blood offerings all give "Through the Lens of Time" a Lovecraftian feeling.
Inside, the crew find a series of small glowing glass orbs that contain something they can't identify. One of the orbs ends up bursting open, sending shards of glass -- and a mysterious energy of some kind -- flying into the eyeballs of Ensign Gamble (Chris Myers). Ensign Gamble's eyeballs are destroyed, but something...

Alex Garland's Annihilation failed at the box office despite rave reviews from critics; seven years after release, it has gained a cult following.
Paramount+ streams Alex Garland's 2018 sci-fi horrorAnnihilation on Aug. 1. Based on the first installment of Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach Trilogy novels, Garland captured the book's surreal tone in the film. Annihilation stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Oscar Isaac, Benedict Wong; Natalie Portman leads as Lena, the only person able to survive the Shimmer, an expanding, anomalous zone of alien origin. Despite positive critical reception, Annihilation was a commercial failure, earning $43.1 million against its $55 million budget.
Annihilation treads familiar sci-fi horror tropes up until its trippy ending: after leading an exploration team deep into the Shimmer, Lena is the only surviving member of the team. Her last remaining colleague transforms into a dopplenganger that mimics Lena's movements. Lena tricks the creature into holding a grenade; as it dies,...

Nicholas Cage appeared in Color Out of Space, the 2019 adaptation of the H. P. Lovecraft short story of the same name. The movie received positive reviews and currently holds an 82% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. As a result, it could be the template for reviving a Lovecraftian horror collaboration between Guillermo Del Toro and Tom Cruise.
Del Toro, a master of the horror genre, wanted to adapt Lovecraft’s cosmic horror novella into a movie, starring Tom Cruise. However, shortly after being announced in 2010, the project was shelved. Nonetheless, the Nicholas Cage-led movie is proof that an adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness can work, and here is why del Toro needs to revive it.

I’m of the opinion that stories are more satisfying within the historical context that they were originally created. For instance, Spider-Man works better as a character when inserted into the colorful counter-cultural movements of the 1960s, and Count Dracula loses a lot of the subtext that makes him so interesting when removed from the final days of the Victorian era.
I believe this is also the case with the writings of H.P. Lovecraft. While cosmic horror as a concept can be effectively applied to nearly any time or place, the irrational fear of foreign cultures and incomprehensible alien beings was much more poignant before ideas like extraterrestrial invaders and alternate dimensions escaped the confines of pulpy magazines and entered mainstream culture. That’s why it’s so difficult to adapt Lovecraft’s stories to a modern setting, as both society and media have evolved to the point where it...

While we often take it for granted during the rushed blur of our daily lives, a single glance up at the sky should make it pretty obvious why primitive cultures once worshipped the sun. That’s why it’s no surprise that our nearest star has been a prominent figure in storytelling all the way from Egyptian mythology up to modern-day Superman flicks.
While the sun is usually seen as a symbol of life and hope, our solar dependency has also inspired several stories about the terror of no longer being able to rely on its warmth. When it comes to movies, there’s a certain underrated Sci-Fi flick that expertly explores this specific kind of cosmic horror while also serving as an entertaining dive into the darker side of space travel. Naturally, I’m referring to Danny Boyle’s 2007 thriller Sunshine, which is currently celebrating its 18th anniversary.

This July, Netflix is starting the fireworks early. Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro's 2013 monsters vs. robots blockbuster, is coming to the streaming service. Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, and Rinko Kikuchi star in the science fiction extravaganza, which grossed over $400 million Usd from the global box office. Pacific Rim will be available to stream on Netflix starting on July 1. It joins Pacific Rim: The Black, a Netflix-original animated series that is also available to watch on the streamer.
Pacific Rim came about in the wake of another project collapsing: del Toro's long-dreamed-of adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness. The film was penned by del Toro and Travis Beacham, and was conceptualized as a loving homage to mecha anime and kaiju movies. The film, which bore a $190 million budget, was filmed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada; it was del Toro's first film produced there, and it has subsequently become his home base.

There's no movie I'm more excited for in 2025 than Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein." The sumptuous-looking trailer hints that del Toro's "Frankenstein" could be the truest adaptation yet of Mary Shelley's "The Modern Prometheus," but it's also unmistakably his movie; he considers this to be part of a thematic trilogy with "Nightmare Alley" and "Pinocchio."
Del Toro is one of the foremost fantasy and horror directors we have working today. "Frankenstein" will bring him back to directing outright science-fiction for the first time since 2013's "Pacific Rim."
Besides "Frankenstein," there's another classic sci-fi story that del Toro has long wanted to adapt: H.P. Lovecraft's "At The Mountains of Madness." Published in 1936 (shortly before Lovecraft's death), the story follows a university research team in Antarctica. When some of the explorers are found brutally murdered, geologist William Dyer and his student Danforth investigate and come across a prehistoric city, home...

More characters are piling into the upcoming original anime Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show! From livestreamers to elder gods, this cast is packed — and four new character trailers introduce the cast ahead of the show's July 1 premiere. First is a spotlight for Hastur, voiced by Kazuyuki Okitsu. Named for the elder god first depicted in Ambrose Bierce's "Haïta the Shepherd" and later included in works by H.P. Lovecraft and Robert W. Chambers, this Hastur is a ruthless producer who values viewing numbers above streamers' wellbeing: Hastur Character Trailer Next up is Seishiro Sano, voiced by Atsushi Tamaru. This kindhearted livestreamer is also a math teacher. He can't stand to see young people hurt, and his powers of perception allow him to discern the truth behind people's actions. Psychic Software and Spiderwinkle Games have announced that their top-down gothic RPG The Necromancer’s Tale will officially launch on July 17th for PC via Steam, with a console coming at a later date. To mark the occasion, the team has released a brand-new release date trailer and an in-depth, narrated 7-minute overview covering the core mechanics, combat, and systems behind this unique necromantic experience.
The demo for The Necromancer’s Tale, which was updated earlier this month to include a dungeon-crawl from mid-game, is still available ahead of the game’s launch.
Set in an 18th-century alt-history version of Italy, The Necromancer’s Tale offers players a richly layered narrative focused on the dark path of necromancy – not as a power fantasy, but as a descent into moral compromise, secrecy, and transformation. The human body is a marvel of a machine. Complex and delicate, layers of finely tuned systems work tirelessly to maintain, sustain and create life. Though no two bodies are exactly alike, all require some level of maintenance and, whether we like it or not, all possess an expiration date. It is here in the cold, sterile glow of these facts that the sub-genre of medical horror operates, preying on our deepest fears around organic decay and malevolent medical professionals.
These fears are placed front and center in James Villeneuve‘s debut film, Pins and Needles. In the movie, Chelsea Clark (Ginny & Georgia) stars as Max, a biology grad student and diabetic. On her drive back to campus from a field research site, Max becomes trapped at the home of two murderous biohackers where her safety and insulin supplies quickly begin to run dry. For 60 years, "Star Trek" has stubbornly and steadfastly refused to be a single thing. Ask three fans what they treasure about Gene Roddenberry's science fiction universe and you'll likely get very different answers, probably delivered at great, rambling length. It's the kind of world that was built to inspire a deep passion — it's wide enough to get lost in, deep enough to continuously fascinate, and inconsistent enough to keep everyone complaining and nitpicking as only true lovers could.
The beautiful and inspiring thing about "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is how it threads the needle. Yes, it's a prequel series that's set in a specific time and place and has to continuously bend over backwards to fit established canon, but it does so with such gentle, easygoing grace that newcomers can enjoy it without issue. At no point does it it seem to be trying too hard to appeal...

Stephen King is a man with many fascinations. Fascinations that tend to recur in his work time and time again. He loves a good haunted object, a small town with a long history, blue chambray shirts, and the number 19, just to name a few. He also has a deep fascination with the existentialist ideas of freedom, responsibility, the absurd, and the dread of an uncaring cosmos. Whether it’s through a breakdown in society, a supernatural entity, or an unassuming man named Chuck, King repeatedly pushes his Constant Readers to confront uncomfortable feelings on fate, independent agency, and the all-consuming meaning of life.
That philosophical lens makes the new movie The Life of Chuck, adapted from King’s novella, more than just another nostalgic, star-studded drama. Directed by Mike Flanagan, the film follows Charles “Chuck” Krantz through the milestones of an ostensibly ordinary life, where every memory, regret, and quiet...

It’s safe to say that body horror is having a moment between recent releases The Substance, Grafted, and The Ugly Stepsister. It’s a welcome trend; body horror has a way of getting under our skin like no other, figuratively and otherwise. There’s no end to the creative ways body horror violates, mutilates, and mutates basic biology, finding endless ways to test the gag reflex in the process. Body horror has also long provided fertile ground for groundbreaking filmmakers to explore the psychologically and physically disturbing ways human anatomy can be abused.
There’s a wide world of body horror beyond Society, The Thing, Tetsuo: The Iron Man, Raw, Titane, or even David Cronenberg‘s horror output. For those looking to venture deeper into the stomach-churning abyss, here are 10 body horror movies you maybe haven’t seen from gateway horror to gross-out gorefests.

Batman may be the most grounded of the major superheroes. He has no superpowers, just years of athletic training and cultivating of knowledge. The most acclaimed Batman movies, Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" films, were all about adding realism to the legend of Batman, which has definitely affected public perception of and expectations of a Batman film. But that realism can be limiting. Batman is a fantastic pulp adventurer, and ideally, Gotham City should be a place where the impossible can happen.
One Batman movie that dives right into the unrealistic is 2023's "Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham." Adapted from a 2001 comic mini-series by Mike Mignola, Richard Pace, and Troy Nixey, "The Doom That Came to Gotham" is one of the best animated Batman films ever made. It's an "Elseworlds" tale, which reimagines a DC hero in a different time or genre.

Tom Cruise is finally done with his Mission: Impossible franchise, and I honestly cannot wait to see what the veteran movie star will do after he’s completely finished with the promotional tours for the eighth installment. Maybe he wants to reconsider Guillermo del Toro’s long-gestating project where he was once involved.
I think it’s time for Cruise to venture into another genre after doing action movies for so long. He’s got the versatility, after all, and I would truly want to see a collaboration between him and one of my favorite filmmakers of all time.

Watch the exclusive clip of Barbara Crampton from the “Re-Animator” 4K restoration above.
Forty years ago, Barbara Crampton was at the beginning of her screen career when director Stuart Gordon cast her in his debut film “Re-Animator,” a wildly funny and audacious horror movie based on a short story by H.P. Lovecraft. “I had come from the theater and it was one of my first jobs,” Crampton told IndieWire. “I had worked with Brian De Palma for a minute and on a soap opera, but I think I was too green to understand that we were doing something special.”
“Re-Animator” was something special indeed, a bold and original film that not only ignored the boundaries of good taste but demolished them, yet exhibited an artistry that earned it positive reviews from critics like Pauline Kael and Roger Ebert. “Re-Animator” quickly attracted a cult following, thanks to Gordon’s rollercoaster script,...

When you think of anime adaptations, your mind probably goes straight to manga or light novels. But from global masterpieces to obscure gems, anime has a rich, often overlooked history of bringing classic literature to life. These adaptations don’t just retell familiar stories; they reinterpret them with bold visuals, emotional nuance and cultural twists that make them feel entirely new. Few actors outside the main cast members of each Star Trek series have appeared repeatedly throughout the franchise than Jeffrey Combs. Combs, who was born and raised in California, began appearing in several Star Trek series during the mid-1990s. From Star Trek: Deep Space Nine to Star Trek: Enterprise, Combs made guest appearances and even played recurring characters that fans grew to admire.
Jeffery Combs: a varied career
After studying theater arts in California and Washington, Combs set his sights on Hollywood and moved to Los Angeles. He began landing roles quickly, including Whose Life Is It Anyway, The Man With Two Brains, and From Beyond. In 1985, Combs would embody the character of Herbert West in the film adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s Reanimator as well as two sequels. He’d enter the Star Trek universe in the mid-1990s.

Unspeakable: Beyond the Wall of Sleep opens in Arkham Asylum, where oneirologist Ambrose London arrives to test his dream‑recording device on a patient whose nocturnal episodes conceal a brutal alternate persona. Edward Furlong’s measured performance anchors the film, conveying scientific curiosity even as reality fractures around him.
While anchored in H.P. Lovecraft’s 1919 tale, the narrative expands its brief source material into a more elaborate exploration, weaving psychological torment and graphic corporeal horror. Familiar Lovecraftian signposts—Arkham Asylum, whispers of Miskatonic University—anchor the story to its mythic roots even as Chad Ferrin ventures into taboo extremes.
Ferrin, known for his unapologetic indie horror style, layers cosmic dread over grindhouse aesthetics. The film alternates between deliberate suspense and abrupt shocks, its practical creature effects and retro‑tinged visuals reinforcing an unsettling atmosphere. A synth‑laden score underscores each descent into the unknown, while abrupt cuts between the lab and dreamscape heighten tension.

If you’ve followed my writing on this site, you know that I’m not only a big fan of video games, but also a tabletop game aficionado. Board games have always been one of my hobbies, especially ones that manage to elegantly marry themes and mechanics in a clever way. While I’ve tried out many digital adaptations of popular board games, it’s more rare for me to see video games that are designed to mimic board games in a direct manner. Nullpointer Games’ latest release, The Horror at Highrook, explicitly evokes board game design on every inch of its screen. Inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allen Poe, the game sets your cast of characters loose in the titular mansion, asking you to investigate the disappearance of the home’s family under mysterious circumstances. It’s a classic setup for a game that’s explored in an unconventional way.

Crown of Shadows, also know as The Reign of Queen Ginnarra (the title under which it played film festivals), is a dark, Gothic medieval horror film from director Lawrie Brewster – credited on the DVD from High Fliers as Richard Campbell – and writer Sarah Daly who’ve previously worked together on other Hex Studios productions such as Lord of Tears, The Devil’s Machine, Dragon Knight and The Slave and the Sorcerer.
This latest effort comes from the companies new “strand”, Hex Elder Myths and combines both Brewster and Daly’s past experience in both horror and and action, taking tropes and stereotypes from both genres, fusing medieval fantasy with Lovercraftian horror to deliver what is a sword and sorcery epic. And I don’t use the word epic lightly, because this film runs a whopping 142 minutes!

One of H.P. Lovecraft's classic tales of horror is coming back to the big screen. Deadline reports that Adam Simon and Tim Metcalfe are penning a modernized remake of Herbert West: Reanimator. The story was previously adapted for the screen in 1985 as Re-Animator.
Although his works are famously difficult to adapt, Lovecraft has been a source of inspiration for a number of successful horror films over the years, including Color Out of Space, Banshee Chapter, and Suitable Flesh. Simon and Metcalfe are no strangers to the horror genre; together, the two wrote the Snoop Dogg blaxploitation homage Bones and the supernatural hit The Haunting in Connecticut. Simon directed the fright flicks Brain Dead and Carnosaur, while Metcalfe penned the horror sequel Fright Night Part 2 and the Brad Pitt-David Duchovny serial killer thriller Kalifornia. One of H.P. Lovecraft's most important stories is being adapted for the big screen. Again. A new adaptation of Herbert West: Reanimator, the 1922 short story that inspired the 1985 horror comedy Re-Animator, is in the works. The film will give modern audiences a new chance to witness the sick mind of West, the scientist who develops a serum that can bring corpses back to life. Herbert West: Reanimator was one of the first literary works to include "zombies" as reanimated corpses with uncontrollable urges.
As reported by Deadline, screenwriters Adam Simon and Tim Metcalfe, of The Haunting in Connecticut fame, will write the script for the new project. They'll reunite with executive producer Andrew Trapani, who worked with them on The Haunting in Connecticut and also produced the horror film Winchester. A director is yet to be announced for the film.
Woodlake Entertainment is on board as the production studio behind the project.

Back in 1985, director Stuart Gordon and his collaborators drew inspiration from author H.P. Lovecraft’s 1922 serial novelette Herbert West–Reanimator for a movie that ranks as one of the greatest horror films ever made, Re-Animator. That film was followed by the sequels Bride of Re-Animator and Beyond Re-Animator – and then, even though there were plans and ideas for further sequels, the franchise, unfortunately, sputtered out. Herbert West–Reanimator has gotten other adaptations here and there over the years and now, Deadline reports that The Haunting in Connecticut screenwriters Adam Simon and Tim Metcalfe are working on Herbert West: Reanimator, a contemporary reimagining of the story.
Lovecraft’s story plays out in six sections, titled From the Dark, The Plague-Daemon, Six Shots by Midnight, The Scream of the Dead, The Horror from the Shadows, and The Tomb-Legions. It centers on Herbert West, a brilliant but mercurial physician whose rabid obsession and...

A new, contemporary adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s short story Herbert West: Reanimator is in the works from The Haunting in Connecticut screenwriters Adam Simon and Tim Metcalfe, Deadline reports tonight.
The new adaptation is said to be the first in a series of “elevated genre pics” developed and financed by Woodlake Entertainment.
Herbert West: Reanimator centers on “the brilliant but mercurial physician West, whose rabid obsession and pursuit of life extension succeeds to a horrifying effect.”
The news arrives as the short story’s first feature adaptation, Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator, turns 40 this year. This loose retelling of H.P. Lovecraft’s Herbert West-Reanimator goes for the jugular in terms of gore and laughs thanks to director Stuart Gordon, producer Brian Yuzna, and actor Jeffrey Combs as Herbert West.
Lovecraft’s short story, first serialized in Home Brew magazine in 1922, is the first among his works to mention the fictional Miskatonic University.

Originally set to come out of Early Access tomorrow, we’ll be waiting a while longer for the full launch of RailGods of Hysterra. To make up for it, developer Troglobytes Games and publisher Digital Vortex Entertainment have released a new story trailer for the cooperative base-building survival action game.
According to the dev team, after the internal playtests and feedback from testers, more time was needed “to ensure the experience matches the quality and depth you’ve come to expect.” As a result, the game will instead arrive May 7 on Steam.
“Your excitement and feedback have inspired us to refine key features, enhance the game’s stability, and improve the overall gameplay,” reads the Steam page update. “This is because it is essential to us that your first experience with RailGods of Hysterra is both memorable and truly satisfying.

A couple of things that we’ve covered on the channel at length are the works of Howard Phillips Lovecraft and the films of gone too soon writer and director Stuart Gordon. For Lovecraft, we have looked at everything from behind-the-scenes drama on The Curse to the accuracy and differences of literary adaptations like The Resurrected. We have given Gordon his time in the sun as well, with deep looks at both his movie Dolls and his Poe adaptation of The Pit and the Pendulum. These two titans have also intersected more than a few times with Gordon making movies out of Lovecraft stories like Dagon and Castle Freak and, most famously and something we have covered on more than a few occasions, Re-Animator. Lost in the shuffle is a collaboration of these two greats that may be the greatest achievement that nobody talks about. From Beyond takes a lot of the elements,...

Weird fiction may not be quite as popular as more traditional genres like fantasy or even gothic horror, but you’d be surprised with how much of modern media is inspired or at least influenced by the works of authors like Clark Ashton Smith and even August Derleth. Of course, if one man is responsible for codifying Weird Fiction as we know it today, it has to be the father of the Cthulhu Mythos himself, Howard Phillips Lovecraft.
In the century or so since the author first published his stories about fish cults and elder gods, countless other creators have repurposed his particular brand of cosmic horror for everything from satirical splatter films to even sanity mechanics in gaming (like those in the Call of Cthulhu tabletop RPG). And with such a vast web of influence, it should come as no surprise that many artists have attempted to pay homage...

FromSoftware’s Bloodborne is often praised as one of the greatest horror-inspired action RPGs. A big reason for this, as we know, is its deep connection to the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki has openly credited Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu as a major inspiration behind the game’s themes and design.
Unlike what FromSoft and Miyazaki usually do, Bloodborne leans heavily into cosmic horror, madness, and the fear of the unknown. The way that the game uses its enemy designs and the sense of helplessness is an embodiment of Lovecraftian horror that we’ve rarely ever seen.

I’ve always found it amazing that Clive Barker’s The Hellbound Heart spawned such a successful franchise. On paper, it seems like a psychosexual story about demonic Bdsm would only connect with a niche audience, but the continued popularity of Hellraiser media proves otherwise.
That’s why it’s no surprise that Pinhead and the rest of the Order of the Gash eventually found a life of their own outside of Barker’s original work – and I’m not just talking about the franchise’s extended universe of comic-books, anthology novels and toys. Over the years, the Cenobites have made a series of non-canon appearances in a slew of other media, with some of them even popping up in works outside of the horror genre! With that in mind, we’ve decided to compile a list highlighting six Cenobite cameos from non-Hellraiser media.

Shangri-La Frontier is quickly becoming one of the highest-rated anime currently streaming. Its second season has proven even more monumental than the first, with more extensive world-building and bigger boss fights. Shangri-La Frontier Season 2 follows Sunraku as he attempts to defeat two Colossi, while also competing in the Global Gaming Conference. Sunraku is stretched thinner than evernow that he's about to face Ctarnidd. Ctarnidd is the first Colossi the developers intended for the players to defeat and is an obvious reference to the eldritch god Cthulhu, initially conceived by H.P. Lovecraft.
Ctarnidd is not the only Lovecraftian reference in Shangri-La Frontier. The most recent arc of the game is filled regarding the controversial author's influential horror stories. All good horror thrives on the unknown, but sometimes it really thrives on the unknown. While plenty of scary movies love to tie things up in a neat, terrifying bow, others seem dead set on making sure you leave the theater (or your couch) more confused than when you started. These are the films that don’t just end on a question mark -- they practically mock you for expecting anything else.
Of course, some of the best horror stories don’t hand you all the answers because the real horror lies in uncertainty. Ambiguity keeps the fear alive, lingering in your brain long after fans finish watching the film. However, some movies revel in unsettling mysteries more than most and not only refuse to explain themselves and actively create more questions than they do answers.

Originally, Godzilla had a straightforward goal: smashing the nearest city of destructive humans. However, over the decades, he's become the King of the Monsters and has fought with and against countless other famous cinematic beasts, most famously King Kong in King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962).
Still, when it comes to movie monsters, Godzilla remains almost impossible to beat. He may have started by stomping human cities, but he's since become our greatest defense against other threats to humanity. This...

This is an unfortunate reality that every long-running TV series faces, regardless of the show's overall quality and enduring popularity. That's not to say that the series' weakest episodes were entirely unsuccessful.
After all, some fans have a soft spot for infamous episodes, like the found footage-style "Bitten" and the borderline offensive "Route 666". However, there is one episode that fans dislike unanimously. The episode in question is "Bloodlines," the 20th episode of Supernatural's ninth season.
Updated by Lauren Younkin on March 18, 2025: Supernatural continues to have a passionate and enduring fanbase long after the show's finale. However, not all of its episodes are equally beloved, and "Bloodlines" is one such episode that is sure to get skipped in a series rewatch.
