Russian TV watchdog slams programming
MOSCOW -- Russia's official state watchdog Friday slammed the country's public television stations for screening too many commercials and dumb shows. Vladimir Lukin -- appointed last year by president Vladimir Putin as Russia's official ombudsman -- said in his annual report that "state television channels paid for by taxpayers are overloaded with commercials," according to media reports. Russian television pandered to the lowest common denominator and screened shows of "low moral and artistic level" that was attracting growing public criticism, Lukin said. The report also dealt with a general lack of press freedom in Russia, human rights issues in breakaway region Chechnya and rising gas prices.
