The Life of Chuck, the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also working on series adaptations of The Dark Tower and Carrie for Amazon Studios) reached theatres at the start of June (you can read our 7/10 review Here). This one is not a horror movie, and JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray even described it as a “bittersweet tearjerker.” Less than two months after it started playing on the big screen, The Life of Chuck was given a digital release, and you can watch it on Amazon, where it can be rented for $9.99 or purchased for $19.99. But if you’ve been waiting for the physical media release, we have good news for you today: the 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, and DVD release is set for September 30th, and copies are available for pre-order Here.

Captain America: Brave New World Concept Art Sees Sam Wilson Fighting A Superpowered Serpent Society
The version of Captain America: Brave New World that arrived in theaters earlier this year seemingly had little in common with the one that was originally filmed. Something about it wasn't working, though, meaning The Leader's scenes were reshot and the superpowered Serpent Society was cut.
Rosa Salazar and WWE Superstar Seth Rollins were left on the cutting room floor, despite the former getting her own Happy Meal toy as Diamondback.
Thanks to artist Michael Blackbear Uwandi, we have a piece of concept art showing Sam Wilson/Captain America doing battle with the Serpent Society. This had the potential to be an awesome action sequence, something Uwandi alluded to in his post.
"In early development, we envisioned what it would look like to see Cap fighting the Serpent Society," he explained. "So many cool ideas for them that didn't make it into the final film."
While something about the original...

Anthony Mackie made his cinematic debut as Captain America in Captain America: Brave New World. The film also stars Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Xosha Roquemore, Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, and Harrison Ford. In the story, Mackie’s character, Sam Wilson, digs into a conspiracy involving the U.S. president, Thaddeus Ross, played by Ford.
Even with a strong cast and the Marvel name, the movie didn’t do well at the box office. It earned about $200.5 million in the U.S. and Canada, plus $214.6 million internationally. That brought the total worldwide earnings to $415.1 million.
However, reports claimed that the film needed to make $425 million globally just to break even. This includes the $180 million production budget along with marketing costs.
Critics gave the movie mixed reviews. They were split on the story, how it connects to other Marvel movies, and the special effects. Many described the...

The movie also stars Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Xosha Roquemore, Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, and Harrison Ford. The story follows Mackie’s character, Sam Wilson, as he uncovers a conspiracy involving U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, played by Ford.
Despite the star-studded cast and Marvel’s popularity, the movie struggled at the box office. It made about $200.5 million in the U.S. and Canada and $214.6 million internationally, for a total of $415.1 million worldwide. However, according to reports, the film needed to earn at least $425 million globally to break even. This figure includes the $180 million production budget plus marketing and other costs.
Critics had mixed feelings about the movie. Many were divided over the story, how it connects to other Marvel projects, and the visual effects. Reviews ranged from mixed to negative.

Harrison Ford made his MCU debut in Captain America: Brave New World, a Marvel Studios movie that likely underwent more extensive reshoots than any before it.
We don't know how much President "Thunderbolt" Ross' role changed during those, but it seems The Leader and Serpent Society were the biggest victims of any additional photography. At least one alternate ending was considered for Red Hulk, as the world was supposed to believe he was dead following his battle with Captain America.
However, a post-credits scene would have shown him watching his daughter, Betty Ross, from afar. Instead, the former Commander-in-Chief was imprisoned inside The Raft after taking accountability for his actions.
Variety recently spoke with Ford and asked if Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has "convinced you" to make an MCU return. To that, the legendary actor bluntly responded, "Nope."

Captain America: Brave New World was supposed to launch the MCU’s next phase of grounded, politically charged storytelling — instead, it became one of the studio’s biggest misfires. Despite a great cast that included Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, and Giancarlo Esposito, the film stumbled to a 46% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and earned just $415 million at the global box office. Now, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is offering a blunt assessment of what went wrong: the movie didn’t have Chris Evans.
“It was the first without Chris Evans,” Feige said at a roundtable event attended by Collider’s Steve Weintraub, addressing the backlash and underperformance head-on. While fans were eager to see Sam Wilson take up the shield, the film’s troubled production and heavy reshoots may have undermined the story’s emotional payoff.

Captain America: Brave New World opened earlier this year to 46% on Rotten Tomatoes and ended its run at the global box office with a disappointing $415 million.
The movie got caught up in 2023's Hollywood strikes, but was also heavily reshot. All of The Leader's scenes were scrapped, the final battle removed Isaiah Bradley and Sabra, and Giancarlo Esposito's Sidewinder replaced the Serpent Society.
Marvel Studios clearly attempted to fix a movie that wasn't working, but the result was one of the studio's biggest letdowns. Where did it all go wrong for Captain America: Brave New World? Well, according to Kevin Feige, the movie didn't work because it "was the first without Chris Evans."

The numbers are in, and many Disney fans may not be entirely surprised by the results. GamingToday.com went to work comparing critic and audience scores from Rotten Tomatoes and found that one of the most divisive films of 2025 was none other than the live-action remake of Snow White. Snow White earned about $205,679,463 at the box office, but there was a discrepancy between critics' and fan scores. Snow White garnered a 39% critical score while audiences rated it at 70%, creating a 31% difference of opinion.
Unfortunately for Snow White, the writing was on the wall from the very beginning. There was an intense reaction against the casting of Rachel Zegler in the title role due to racial backlash even before any footage was released. Zegler had already more than proven herself to be a talented performer, specifically in the musical sphere, due to her roles in Steven Spielberg’stragicWest Side Story and...

Few movie studios are operating at as high a level as Neon right now. The studio had a tremendous in 2019 with Parasite, the Best Picture-winner from director Bong Joon Ho, and just last year, it also soared with the release of Longlegs and Anora. The former stars Nicolas Cage and the latter won the Oscar for Best Picture. Neon is always securing the rights to distribution for films that could easily go on to become cult classics, and the studio has struck gold once again. Neon has officially announced that Together, the horror film starring Dave Franco and Alison Brie, will be released in theaters on July 30. It’s the only horror movie of 2025 thus far to earn a perfect 100% “certified fresh” score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Fans of Stephen King's expansive fantasy series "The Dark Tower" have had a pretty rough go of it when it comes to screen adaptations, with only the (extremely subpar) 2017 movie trying to tell the tale of gunslinger Roland Deschain and his epic journey toward the titular tower. Now it seems like there might actually be a proper streaming adaptation courtesy of Mike Flanagan, who directed great takes on King stories with both "Doctor Sleep" and "Gerald's Game," with elements penned by King himself, which is kind of a dream come true.
Because "The Dark Tower" connects a great deal of King's work on the printed page, there are some pretty big references to the "Dark Tower" novels in other King adaptations, giving fans a tiny bit of hope over the years that maybe someday we would get to meet Roland, his ka-tet, and maybe even Blaine the train, that pain.

Marvel Studios has become infamous for how much it changes scripts and projects in development, sometimes even during the actual production of the film. The somewhat unorthodox method of production seemingly worked for the studio in the past, with stories like those of Jeff Bridges, Jon Favreau, Robert Downey Jr. and others on the set of Iron Man rewriting and creating new scenes as they went along being the stuff of legends. Lately, however, this way of working hasn't exactly worked out well for Marvel, and new behind-the-scenes look at Captain America: Brave New World feels like a prime example of that.
New images from the book "Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World - The Art of the Movie" have provided an in-depth look at the pre-production process for the movie. Directed by Julius Onah, Brave New World is the first mainlineCaptain America movie to star Anthony Mackie as...

Captain America: Brave New World left Marvel Cinematic Universe fans wanting despite following extensive reshoots and creative changes. One thing the film deprived audiences of is Isaiah Bradley transforming into the Patriot.
A new behind-the-scenes image from the film, shared by Captain America News on X, confirmed that Bradley was supposed to appear as the Patriot. The photo features the stunt doubles of Carl Lumbly's Bradley, Shira Haas' Ruth Bat-Seraph and Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson sporting their suits. The costume Bradley's stunt double (seen on the left) wears is a comics-accurate outfit of the Patriot, featuring the notable star on the front.

Captain America: Brave New World may have gone through more extensive reshoots than any MCU movie before it. The superpowered Serpent Society was cut, all of The Leader's scenes were reshot after his appearance was redesigned, and Sidewinder was added as a new villain.
Those are just a few of the changes (another saw Red Hulk still free and keeping watch over Betty Ross from afar). We've seen promo art showing Isaiah Bradley wearing a costume, but that's now been fully revealed in a photo showcasing the movie's stunt team.
It's previously been reported that Isaiah and Sabra suited up to help Sam Wilson fight Red Hulk in the final battle. For whatever reason, Marvel Studios decided that the new Captain America should go it alone, and Bradley never got his superhero moment as a result.
There must have been something fundamentally wrong with the original cut of Captain America: Brave New World...

2025 has been one of the weaker years for the film industry as high-budget films like Captain America: Brave New World and Snow White have failed at both impressing the audience and at the box office. Reshoots completely reshaped Captain America: Brave New World, and the Serpent Society in its original form ended up on the cutting room floor.
Rosa Salazar and Seth Rollins were cast as Diamondback and Cobra, and were in the movie long enough for the former to receive her own Happy Meal toy last year. When all was said and done, the Serpent Society became Sidewinder's grounded (some might say "generic") group of mercenaries, the Serpents.
Thanks to The Artbook Collector, we now have a new look at Cobra and Asp, along with a first look at Red Hulk's mustache and beard, neither of which made it into the movie. Rather than follow the comics by having President Thaddeus Ross' facial hair vanish when he transforms—which was largely done to hide Red Hulk's identity—it was explained that he shaved it off during his Presidential campaign.

Captain America: Brave New World underwent significant changes during reshoots, with the Serpent Society left on the cutting room floor and The Leader's appearance completely overhauled after all of Tim Blake Nelson's scenes were reshot.

Nearly a decade before directing "Spider-Man," Sam Raimi gave the world "M.A.N.T.I.S."
To answer the most burning question right away, "M.A.N.T.I.S." stands for Mechanically Augmented Neuro-Transmitter Interception System. It's the nickname that Dr. Miles Hawkins (Carl Lumbly) gave to the elaborate metal exoskeleton that he strapped around his body to fight crime. Dr. Hawkins had previously been paralyzed from the waist down after being shot in the spine by the police while trying to rescue a child in peril during a riot. He tried to sue the police department, but instead found a racist conspiracy designed to keep the city's Black population oppressed. Moved to justice, Dr. Hawkins invented the M.A.N.T.I.S. exoskeleton to help him walk. The exoskeleton worked better than he could have possibly imagined, though, granting him superhuman strength. He elected to become a bug-inspired superhero, doling out justice and confronting police corruption.

Mike Flanagan made his impact on the horror genre with different projects, but he became popular after his partnership with Netflix for shows like The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher. However, the auteur is very well-versed in the adaptation of Stephen King's novels.
The horror mastermind is often critical of his adaptations, but his partnership with Flanagan has proven extremely prolific. After Flanagan focused exclusively on creating and directing TV shows, he also worked on several Stephen King projects. The latest one, The Life of Chuck, debuted last year to positive reviews and awards chatter at the Toronto International Film Festival, and, as it finally hit theaters, it features an equally thrilling score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Some people might be surprised to hear this, but Tom Hiddleston is not the only star of Mike Flanagan’s “The Life of Chuck.” He’s not even the only Chuck! In Flanagan’s sweeping Stephen King adaptation, four different actors play everyman Chuck throughout various periods of his life. There’s Hiddleston, of course, as adult Chuck; Cody Flanagan (Mike and co-star Kate Siegel’s real-life child) as kid Chuck; Jacob Tremblay as teen Chuck; and first-time film actor Benjamin Pajak as tween Chuck.
It’s Pajak who will likely capture the most attention for his work here, even as he acts alongside legends like Mark Hamill and Mia Sara, thanks to his wonderfully open-hearted performance, plus plenty of dancing. While Pajak, just 12 years old at the time of filming, is no stranger to acting, the film is his very first film role. It’s an auspicious one at that,...

Mike Flanagan and Stephen King are a match made in the heavenly cosmos for Neon’s The Life of Chuck, which expands to theaters nationwide beginning tonight, June 12.
It’s important to note that The Life of Chuck isn’t a horror movie from Flanagan and King this time around, but that doesn’t mean the movie isn’t packed with beloved horror stars.
In this exclusive clip, Mike Flanagan and star Kate Siegel discuss the horror icons featured in the cast of The Life of Chuck, including A Nightmare on Elm Street legend Heather Langenkamp, Scream‘s Matthew Lillard, and Late Night with the Devil‘s David Dastmalchian. And that’s just the beginning. Watch the exclusive featurette below.
“The similarities between The Life of Chuck and a horror movie is that the emotional stakes are so epic in this film,” Matthew Lillard previews in the new featurette video.

Anthony Mackie’s turn as Captain America didn’t turn out as great as expected, both in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as well as Captain America: Brave New World. While the merits of the projects continue to be in debate, there has been a relentless hatred towards Sam Wilson taking on Cap’s mantle. At least some of these opinions have a racial motivation behind them.
The shift from a white American World War II vet to a black soldier caused significant outrage, and the underlying racism is hard to ignore. It is almost like some fans want Sam’s Cap to fail miserably. When fans continue to defend the acts of John Walker’s Captain America, some point out that Sam would’ve faced severe consequences if he were in Walker’s place.

One of Captain America: Brave New World's biggest actors gave his unfiltered opinion of people vocal about Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson taking over the mantle of Captain America. Unfortunately, the entire MCU fanbase has not accepted Anthony Mackie becoming Captain America since Steve Rogers gave Sam Wilson the shield in Avengers: Endgame. One particular side of the fanbase has been outspoken about Sam Wilson representing America in the franchise, with both the character and Mackie himself receiving some backlash.
Carl Lumbly, who portrays Isaiah Bradley in Captain America: Brave New World and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, recently spoke out against those people who won't accept Sam Wilson as the new Captain America. Lumbly referenced his own experiences and didn't hold back when addressing that group of people, letting his true emotions be known.

Now in theatres (and expanding to more next Friday) is The Life of Chuck, the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing series adaptations of The Dark Tower and Carrie for Amazon Studios) – but this one is not a horror movie. JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray got to see the movie a while back (you can read his 7/10 review Here) and described it as a “bittersweet tearjerker.” The film is based on the short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds, and now that the story has been given the film treatment, it’s being re-released on its own. There are 128 page hardcover and Kindle editions making their way out into the world on June 10th, along with a 2 hour audiobook (you can purchase those releases at This...

Tom Hiddleston has identified a Val Kilmer movie role that he believes could be the defining "cinema" performance. There is little argument that Val Kilmer has been considered a Hollywood legend for quite some time, but it feels like appreciation for the actor is only growing as the years go by. Whether it's his powerful Top Gun: Maverick cameo, the renewed appreciation for his 1993 Western movie, Tombstone, or the undercurrent of praise for Batman Forever as an underrated superhero movie, more and more movie fans are discovering the genius of Val Kilmer's work.
One such movie fan is Tom Hiddleston. Best known for his long-running role as Loki, Hiddleston's next release is The Life of Chuck, adapted from a Stephen King novel by writer and director Mark Flanagan. Plot: An apocalyptic event and the life of a mild-mannered accountant named Chuck (Tom Hiddleston) have an odd correlation.
Review: Two kinds of folks will be checking out this review of The Life of Chuck—those who have read the short story and those who haven’t. To be transparent, I’m one of those who have not. I was tempted to read it before making the trip to TIFF (which is where I first saw this movie) to see Mike Flanagan’s big-screen adaptation, but in the end, I didn’t because I wanted to experience the film as its own thing without any preconceived notions.
Pretty much right off the bat, I was intrigued by Flanagan’s first feature since his last Stephen King adaptation, Doctor Sleep. The film begins in one of King’s sleepy small towns, where a schoolteacher (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor) tries to keep...

It’s the end of the world as we know it, and Charles “Chuck” Krantz (Tom Hiddleston) does not feel fine. Outside the room where this 39-year-old accountant lies in bed, there are earthquakes and sinkholes and volcanoes erupting in Germany. California has fallen into the ocean. Suicide rates are through the roof. Both our social infrastructure and the internet are on the verge of collapse. Pornhub, however, is already offline. We repeat: Pornhub. Is. Offline!

The universe is endless in the final trailer for The Life of Chuck. Filmmaker Mike Flanagan re-teams with legendary author Stephen King for yet another collaboration with plenty of promise. The story at the center of the film allows both creatives to step out of their boxes, leaving horror behind and, instead, leaning into the incredible wonderment of life. With a star-studded cast led by the likes of Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Bridget Jones: Mad About a Boy), and Karen Gillan (the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise), audiences will soon get to feast their eyes on the Certified Fresh film when it opens in select cinemas on June 6, with a wide theatrical release set for June 13.

"The universe is large, and it contains multitudes, but it also contains... me." It's finally time for everyone to experience the magic of this movie! Neon has revealed a second and final trailer for The Life of Chuck, created by master filmmaker Mike Flanagan. Ready to open in theaters nationwide starting on June 6th - later this week. This initially premiered at last year's Toronto Film Festival, where it won the prestigious People's Choice Award. "With The Life of Chuck, Mike Flanagan takes a detour from the macabre to explore one of Stephen King's alternate sensibilities in an adaptation that carries the spirit of his most optimistic work. The world feels like it’'s ending and everybody’s saying goodbye to Chuck." But it ain't over yet. A life-affirming, genre-bending story adapted from Stephen King's novella about 3 chapters in the life of a man named Charles Krantz. The main...

Upon debuting in theaters this year, Captain America: Brave New World fell short of its box office expectations. Perhaps many potential filmgoers were waiting to watch the film on streaming, as it's become a major hit on Disney+.
Currently, Captain America: Brave New World is dominating the Disney+ streaming charts. Globally, it is the No. 1 movie on Disney+. It's comfortably ahead of a slew of Lilo & Stitch movies, which make up the rest of the Top 5. Of course, that's likely due to the new live-action remake having a successful run in theaters. Only one other MCU film is currently on the Top 10 list, with Avengers: Endgame sitting at No. 9, per FlixPatrol.

Captain America: Brave New World opened in theaters this past February to mixed reviews. When all was said and done, the movie grossed only $415.1 million, a disappointing result made worse by reshoots that led to characters being cut and a complete overhaul for The Leader.
In attempting to figure out where things went wrong for Sam Wilson's first solo outing as the McU's Captain America, fans have suggested that Red Hulk shouldn't have been shown in the movie's trailers.
That way, The Leader and Serpent Society could have been marketed as the main threats, with perhaps only a few hints about Red Hulk's debut helping increase intrigue and excitement for the movie. It's a compelling argument, but not one Captain America: Brave New World director Julius Onah necessarily agrees with.

As horror has solidified itself as one of the last remaining bankable bastions of cinema, Stephen King’s vast trove of writing has become a juggernaut of intellectual property. The author is to the genre what Marvel is to action. And few filmmakers understand the literary giant’s enduring appeal better than Mike Flanagan, who previously brought King’s Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep to the screen. (He also has a Carrie series in the works.)
But with The Life of Chuck, based on King’s novella of the same name from the 2020 collection If It Bleeds, Flanagan has a more expansive aim. This isn’t an act of adaptation so much as a bow in adoration. His goal with this filmic translation is to tout King’s bona fides as the humanist behind Stand by Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile—that is, as more than...

Captain America: Brave New World didn’t exactly win the hearts of critics or dominate the box office like previous entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's fair to say. With a lukewarm 48% on Rotten Tomatoes and a domestic haul of just $200.5 million – modest by superhero standards – the fourth Captain America film seemed poised to be forgotten. But now it’s enjoying an unexpected second wind, thanks to strong home entertainment sales, which some may have thought were a thing of the past.

Captain America: Brave New World earned only $415 million at the worldwide box office, a disappointing result made worse by the fact that reshoots reportedly sent its budget skyrocketing to a whopping $300 million.
Thunderbolts*, which received far more positive reviews, has similarly underperformed. At best, it will likely finish its run with $380 million.
Don't feel too sorry for Disney, though, as Lilo & Stitch is shaping up to be 2025's biggest hit. Isaiah Bradley's (Carl Lumbly) attack against U.S. President Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (Harrison Ford) in Captain America: Brave New World raised many questions about his state of mind. Bradley made his MCU debut in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+ as an African-American soldier who secretly took the Super Soldier serum during the Korean War.
While Steve Rogers received high praise as Captain America, Bradley's story was different and tragic. His act of rescuing other black super soldiers during the war and defeating the Winter Soldier led to his capture by the U.S. government, mainly because they wanted to erase the truth about his brave stand.
Thankfully, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) helped fix his legacy by creating a memorial dedicated to Isaiah Bradley's efforts for the country. However, Bradley still doesn't trust the U.S. government, which is understandable given what he has been through in the past.

Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World is now streaming on Disney+, giving those who decided to skip the movie in theaters - or who might want to give it another shot - the chance to watch Sam Wilson's first big-screen outing as the Sentinel of Liberty from the comfort of their couch.
Deadpool and Wolverine proved to be a much-needed box office jolt for Marvel/Disney, and also went over pretty well with fans and critics. Unfortunately, Brave New World wasn't quite able to keep the momentum going.
To be fair, the movie did end up passing $400 million worldwide (which didn't always seem likely), but with a budget that reportedly ballooned to over $200 million after extensive reshoots (not counting marketing costs), this must still be considered as a disappointing result. The critical reception was also mixed-negative, and the fourth Captain America movie is currently sitting at 47% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 342 reviews.
