In an interview with Digital Spy, Alan Tudyk revealed that he almost turned down starring in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story because of scheduling conflicts. When the director of the film, Gareth Edwards, approached him for the role of K-2So, Tudyk was already working on a series called Con Man. Due to this, the actor had to tell Edwards that he would have to turn the film down if it were to begin filming in June. Making this call certainly wasn’t an easy one, since even being offered the role was surreal for the actor.
[Gareth] offered it to me in the room – it didn’t seem real…I said, ‘I would love to say yes, but it is contingent on one thing. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but if you’re shooting in June, I have to say no – because that’s when we were shooting Con Man,...

Alex Lawther is in his sci-fi era.
“By chance,” the British actor laughs. “You don’t chase the genre — you chase good writing.”
Lawther is discussing his stint in the Diego Luna-led Star Wars spinoff Andor, season two of which aired earlier this year to rave reviews. “What I’ve loved about Andor is its ambitions to be intellectually serious in what it’s doing,” the 30-year-old explains to The Hollywood Reporter.
Now, he sinks his teeth into a fan-favorite franchise equally as “juggernaut-y” and cerebrally challenging with FX’s Alien prequel series Alien: Earth. Set two years before the events of Ridley Scott’s 1979 film, the show tells the story of a space vessel that crash-lands on a version of Earth not-too-far in the future from now and sets loose the collected samples of several different alien life forms. A human-synthetic hybrid, Wendy (Sydney Chandler), and a ragtag...

George R.R. Martin generously praised Disney+’s Andor series on his website, Not a Blog, and proclaimed it as the best among the roster of Star Wars spinoffs. The famed author, known for his expertise and mastery of fantasy and science fiction, remarked that the show absolutely nailed it.
Andor was this year’s highlight, though. Far and away the best of the Star Wars spinoffs. Looked gorgeous, Diego Luna was first rate, and there was a realism and tension to the story that was sadly lacking in most of the other spinoffs. It’s nice to see someone doing science fiction right.
Any fan would agree with Martin, as Tony Gilroy’s franchise pulled out the big guns and gave the audience a spectacle that they have never seen before. Moreover, with Martin taking some time to finish A Song of Ice and Fire, we cannot help but wonder...

Scott Bakula might finally return to the screen as Captain Jonathan Archer in a spinoff show called Star Trek: Archer. This week’s Star Trek: Trek to Las Vegas convention, veteran writer Michael Sussman revealed that he had pitched an Archer-centric spinoff to Paramount a few years ago after Picard made its debut, but the show was dismissed after a few rounds of pitching.
Sussman revealed that he had pitched a show where Archer would be President of the Federation, based on a blink-and-you-miss-it shot in Enterprise. The political thriller would reportedly be like The West Wing, focusing on the Federation’s administration. He even pitched the idea to Bakula, who was reportedly interested (via Trek Movie).
It’s a political thriller and a family drama set in those chaotic, formative years of the Federation…We did 98 hours of Enterprise, and I think he felt [Bakula] really explored that character,...

As part of Collider's Exclusive Preview event, bringing our readers the first and best looks at the year's upcoming hits, we are thrilled to exclusively debut a glamorous new image from Kiss of the Spider Woman, Bill Condon’s vibrant new adaptation of the Tony-winning musical, starring Jennifer Lopez, Tonatiuh, and Diego Luna. In the image, Lopez — playing silver-screen icon Ingrid Luna — radiates vintage glamour in a silky cream dress and classic red lipstick as she cradles Tonatiuh’s Molina in an opulent dressing room tableau straight out of a Golden Age MGM musical. The reflection behind them teases Lopez’s duality in the film — equal parts fantasy and survival instinct, as imagined through Molina’s escapist lens.
From Condon, the acclaimed director of Dreamgirls and Beauty and the Beast, Kiss of the Spider Woman brings back the heightened spectacle of movie musicals with dazzling Technicolor hues and sweeping emotional depth.

Andor is the Star Wars project I jumped to defend as soon as it premiered on Disney+. This was during the early days of season 1, when most fans didn't see the show's appeal and found Cassian Andor boring, as well as the show's slow pace a drag.
I had a reason to defend Andor; I loved Cassian since Rogue One, and I was a huge fan of Diego Luna's portrayal of the character. Another reason was my undying love for Jyn Erso, a character who always seemed like a mirror to Cassian Andor. I had mistakenly hoped that the series would eventually bring up Jyn Erso's name, or allow Felicity Jones to play the character one last time. I was wrong, but that's not why I'm upset.
I'm glad Andor was a success, but it's hard to ignore the rise in fan backlash towards everything about Rogue One, especially...

According to his interview with Forbes, Adriano Goldman, cinematographer for the upcoming HBO Harry Potter reboot, announced that he’s bringing big changes to the show (reported via Collider). One of the biggest updates is that the TV series will look a lot brighter and more colorful than the Og movies.
Adriano Goldman noted spending 18 weeks in pre-production with the creative team, designing a vibrant visual style that brings out the whimsical charm of the Wizarding World. Unlike the films, which became darker and duller over time, this version aims to capture the color and warmth of J.K. Rowling’s books.
This is the part I consider most rewarding. Collaborating from the origin of the project… this joint elaboration of visual content allows a broader collaboration between talented professionals from various areas.
I have a special relationship with color. This series needs to be more vibrant from the global point of view of the image…...

Bill Condon is no stranger to the movie musical. He wrote 2002’s Chicago and went on to direct both Oscar-winner Dreamgirls and Disney hit Beauty and the Beast. This past winter Condon debuted his latest, The Kiss of the Spider Woman, in an unexpected locale: The Sundance Film Festival.
While it has debuted its fair share star power, Sundance is more known for quiet dramas than splashy musicals starring one of the world’s biggest popstars. (It should be noted that this wasn’t Condon’s first time at the fest — Gods and Monsters, for which he won an Oscar, debuted in Park City in 1998.) But the Eccles proved a warm venue for the film, which had audiences clapping for star Jennifer Lopez’s showstopping turn and the film earned overwhelmingly positive reviews.

Fresh off his first Emmy nomination for The White Lotus, Jason Isaacs is heading to Texas — 1974 Texas, to be exact — for the upcoming hostage thriller Eleven Days. Isaacs will star alongside Taylor Kitsch and Diego Luna in the tense indie drama from Parkland and Concussion director Peter Landesman.
Based on the real-life Carrasco Prison Siege, Eleven Days unfolds during a sweltering Texas summer when ruthless prisoner Federico Carrasco (Luna) seizes control of Huntsville Penitentiary. Isaacs plays Father Joseph O’Brien, a prison priest who steps directly into harm’s way, joining forces with Texas Department of Corrections head Jim Estelle (Kitsch). By offering himself as a hostage, O’Brien hopes to outmaneuver Carrasco and save the lives of the other captives trapped inside. The screenplay, written by Kevin Sheridan with revisions by Landesman, adapts William T. Harper’s nonfiction account Eleven Days in Hell: The 1974 Carrasco Prison Siege at Huntsville, Texas.

Saturday Night Live has set a return date, announcing the season 51 premiere date. And with it comes speculation on who will host and reports about potential cast changes under Lorne Michaels.
SNL returns to NBC on October 4. It's slightly later than season 50's late September start date, but falls in line with the premiere dates for past seasons. With just over two months until showtime, Lorne Michaels has a few decisions to make regarding the cast.
According to Deadline, Michaels has yet to make any decisions about new cast members. The outlet reports that the first round of applications for new performers came prior to July 4. Sources also tell Deadline that Michaels is focused on hiring "character-driven performers" rather than stand-up comedians.
While that could change based on who submits material or gets called in for an audition, it's a good sign for Saturday Night Live's future. More original...

George R.R. Martin has named a new Star Wars television series as the highlight of 2025 in a glowing review of the latest shows and films he's watched. He called it "the best of the Star Wars spinoffs."
In a new post on his official website, Martin talked about watching Superman as well as some television series he's been enjoying recently. He ultimately named Andor as "this year's highlight," writing, "Far and away the best of the Star Wars spinoffs. In a recent blog post, renowned Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin shared his opinions on two of the biggest—and most divisive—franchises in modern popular culture: Star Wars and DC.
After noting that he’s enjoyed shows like Apple TV+’s Murderbot, he shared a more in-depth review on a Star Wars spinoff we loved here at Winter is Coming.
“Andor was this year’s highlight, though. Far and away the best of the Star Wars spinoffs," Martin wrote on July 25. Indeed, Martin’s statement echoes many a sentiment shared by Star Wars fans across the globe, the vast majority of whom were enthralled by Andor’s explosive mix of political intrigue and high-stakes drama.

George R.R. Martin has weighed in on the current state of televised science fiction — and he’s got some favorites. The Game of Thrones author used a recent entry on his Not a Blog to sing the praises of multiple shows, but singled out one Emmy-nominated series in particular as the gold standard for sci-fi done right: Andor.
“There’s been some great Sf on television as well,” Martin wrote. “The Murderbot stories are always a lot of fun, and the TV show did them justice. I look forward to another series.” But it’s Andor, Martin said, that stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Bill Condon’s upcoming movie musical version of Kiss of the Spider Woman is heading to theaters on Oct. 10. Starring Jennifer Lopez, Diego Luna, and Tonatiuh Elizarraraz, the film is anticipated to be a serious Oscar contender, spinning a tale of human connection between two unlikely prisoners — and the movie star that binds them together.
It’s the second feature film adaptation to spring from Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel of the same name. Released on July 26, 1985, Héctor Babenco’s Kiss of the Spider Woman also proved a huge hit with Oscar voters, scoring four nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, at the 58th Academy Awards. It made history as one of the first films with overt LGBTQ+ themes to be nominated in both of those major categories.

Comic-Con fans attending the Hall H panel for Prime Video’s Gen V on Friday got a treat when a sneak peek at Season 5 of flagship series The Boys was shown in the room.
The reaction from the crowd reverberated outside the doors of the cavernous room as the footage appeared, marking the first look at the fifth and final season of Eric Kripke’s singular superhero series.
The footage included a look at Homelander (Antony Starr), now the de facto leader of America, standing in a crowded room proclaiming the country under his control will be a “safer, God-fearing nation.”
There was a very quick look at Jared Padalecki (met with whoops and cheers), who is boarding the final season in a reunion with Supernatural co-star Jensen Ackles aka Soldier Boy. Misha Collins is expected to make an appearance as well, though we didn’t get a glimpse of him in the footage.

Veneno convinces Muñeco to take him deep into the hyper-masculine world of long-haul trucking across the north of Mexico. As they travel together and an unexpected intimacy builds between them, shadows from Veneno’s past resurface, putting both their lives at risk. It's the movie that made little princesses everywhere want to lose a glass slipper in hopes of it being found by a charming prince. So many Cinderella films have been made, and many actresses have portrayed the princess, from Julie Andrews to Brandy. Both starred in Rodgers & Hammerstein's version based on the fairytale, and now a limited series from Skydance Television and Concord Originals has landed on Disney+.
Singer and actress Jennifer Lopezwill produce the series under her Nuyorican Productions banner. The project, which is currently in development, will be a musical series emphasizing Cinderella's fairy godparents' perspectives. Deadline also reports that a bidding war ensued between Amazon and Disney for the series, with Disney ultimately emerging victorious.
Rachel Shukert, whose credits include The Handmaid's Tale, Glow, Nine Perfect Strangers, The Baby-Sitters Club, and more, has written the upcoming limited series and is attached as executive producer and showrunner. Skydance...

There's nothing like a good thriller that'll have you on the edge of your seat. The thriller genre has produced some of the highest-grossing films, especially when combined with other genres such as crime, action, and superhero. Thrillers also boasts some of the most intriguing plots, and the newest to appear is a film starring Andor's Diego Luna. According to Deadline, the actor will join forces with The Terminal List star Taylor Kitsch in an indie thriller titled Eleven Days. The movie, directed by Peter Landesman, who also helmed Parkland and Concussion, is expected to bring the heat in various ways.
Eleven Days will be set in 1974, during extremely hot summer days in Texas. A determined and ruthless prisoner, Federico Carrasco (Luna), plays a round of a deadly game against the head of the Texas Department of Corrections, Jim Estelle (Kitsch), following an escape plan gone wrong. Andor exited the 2025 Emmy nominations with 14 nods spanning Outstanding Drama Series, directing, writing, cinematography, sound design, visual effects, voiceover work from Alan Tudyk, and more. Yet the anticipation of key acting nods was dashed as only Forest Whitaker secured a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Saw Gerrera, while lead actor Diego Luna was inexplicably snubbed.
Whitaker’s nomination marks Star Wars’ rare Television Academy recognition in acting, even if confined to a guest slot. His performance as Gerrera landed with Rogue One fans and proved impactful enough to earn acknowledgment from the Emmy powers-that-be this year.
Cassian Andor, however, anchors the show, and many felt that Luna absolutely deserved to be recognized in the Outstanding Lead Actor category. This omission particularly stings given his series-defining performance and the show’s critical acclaim.

In 2023, Andor's first season received eight Emmy nominations, including one for Outstanding Drama Series. Despite the Disney+ original series being recognized in many categories—such as writing, directing, cinematography, music, and many others—it didn't walk away with any wins. While even getting nominated at the Emmys is cause for celebration, zero wins was surely a disappointing result after such a well-received show.
In case you've been out of the loop for a while, Andor stars Diego Luna as Cassian Andor. The show takes place in the events leading up to 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which itself occurs immediately before the events of 1977's A New Hope. I know, it's confusing if you're new around here, but that's Star Wars.

Hell hath no fury like a TV fan scorned.
Following the announcement of the 2025 Emmy nominations, Gold Derby users were outraged that several top contenders failed to hear their names called. Nearly half of the people we polled said that Squid Game was the biggest snub, having received zero bids for Season 2 after winning six trophies for Season 1 in 2022.
Among the list of snubbed Squid Game actors: Lee Jung-jae, who won the last time he was eligible for playing Seong Gi-hun (Player 456); Choi Seung-hyun as the villainous Thanos (Player 230); Lee Byung-hun as the Front Man; Park Sung-hoon as trans contestant Cho Hyun-ju (Player 120); Kang Ae-shim as protective mother Jang Geum-ja (Player 149); Park Gyu-young as Kang No-eul, the North Korean defector who's now a pink-clad soldier; and Gong Yoo as the Recruiter on the outside.

Star Wars actor Diego Luna has lined up his next big role. He is set to be one of the leads in Eleven Days, an indie thriller that's set to start shooting in September.
Per Deadline, Luna has boarded the cast of Eleven Days. Directed by Peter Landesman (Concussion), the film also stars Taylor Kitsch. Kevin Sheridan wrote the screenplay with revisions by Landesman, though the movie takes inspiration from William T. Harper's original book, Eleven Days in Hell: The 1974 Carrasco Prison Siege at Huntsville, Texas. Vincent Newman and Vance Howard are producing.

Every year, the Emmys reveal which shows, actors and producers are up for awards, and each year, there are always some worthy candidates who get left behind. This year, there's a lot of stink about Diego Luna not getting a nod in the Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series category for his performance as the title character in Star Wars: Andor, definitely one of the most arresting dramas of 2025. Genevieve O’Reilly, who played Mon Mothma, also didn't get a nod.
“These aren’t great moment-to-moment [performances],” showrunner Tony Gilroy told Deadline about his overlooked actors. “These are epic, long-term character studies that they’ve done over 24 episodes. I think the ultimate victory is that these performances will be celebrated and discussed for years to come. I feel confident about that.”

Diego Luna and Taylor Kitsch are headed to Texas for one of the most gripping real-life thrillers in recent memory. The two actors will headline Eleven Days, a new indie drama from Concussion and Parkland director Peter Landesman, set against the scorching backdrop of a 1974 prison siege that shocked the nation. Based on William T. Harper’s nonfiction book Eleven Days In Hell: The 1974 Carrasco Prison Siege at Huntsville, Texas, the film takes place during the sweltering Texas summer of ’74 when a botched escape attempt at the Huntsville Penitentiary turned into an 11-day hostage standoff. Sounds pretty exciting. Deadline reported the news.
Luna will play convicted heroin kingpin Federico Carrasco, whose desperate bid for freedom traps dozens in a deadly standoff. Kitsch plays Jim Estelle, the head of the Texas Department of Corrections, who finds himself caught in a mental and moral chess match with a man who has nothing left to lose.

Now that Superman star David Corenswet has officially ascended to blockbuster status, fans are getting a closer look at what makes the actor tick. As it turns out, he’s not just a Star Wars fan — he’s a serious one.
In a recent episode of Royal Court with Brittany Broski, Corenswet broke down his preferred viewing order for the Skywalker Saga, and it would make even the most passionate armchair Jedi raise an eyebrow.
Corenswet’s chosen sequence? IV, V, I, II, III, VI.
That’s right, he kicks things off with A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, preserves the original trilogy’s most iconic twist (“I am your father”), and then dives into the prequels as a kind of tragic flashback before ending with Return of the Jedi.

With the 2025 Emmy Awards announcing their nominees this morning, we’ve finally had time to catch our breath and read over the nominees. In the process, we found several snubs that are not only surprising but will age terribly in the years ahead. Check out our list and let us know if any big ones are missing.
2025 Emmy Snubs and Surprises Snub: An Only Murders Lead Bloodbath
The duo of Martin Short and Steve Martin gained new life with the arrival of Selena Gomez. The trio has become one of the great comedic teams in recent memory, allowing Gomez to shine by offering a laconic humor compared to the massive performances from Short and Martin. However, with only Short grabbing a nomination for the 2025 Emmys, we’re a little baffled. It’s possible both could have made the list in a year of six nominees, but unfortunately, we can never know if that is true.

Andor's showrunner, Tony Gilroy, has commented on the show's many Emmy snubs, claiming an ultimate victory in light of this. Andor season 2's ending was a monumental moment in the Star Wars franchise. Not only did it end a stellar season of TV, but it culminated the best Star Wars TV show ever made.
Despite how revered the show is, though, some disappointing news about the central performances from Andor season 2's cast has been brought to light recently.
In an interview with Deadline, Gilroy was asked for his thoughts on Andor cast members like Diego Luna, Stellan Skarsgård, Elizabeth Dulau, Genevieve O'Reilly, and Adria Arjona being snubbed at this year's Emmys. Gilroy stated, “There are a lot of performances that I wish were recognized," before going on to claim the ultimate victory for the show:

The 2025 Emmy Nominations have been revealed and, shockingly, Squid Game is not among them. The K-drama phenomenon debuted on Netflix to massive audience popularity and critical acclaim in 2021, showcasing an incredibly tense story in a disturbingly vibrant world, all serving as a scathing indictment of capitalistic practices.
For its first season, Squid Game was nominated for 14 Primetime Emmy Awards and won six, including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Lee Jung-jae as Gi-hun) and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series. Squid Game season 2 was eligible for the 2025 Emmys, and received no nominations.
Per Variety, Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria expressed her own disappointment at Squid Game season 2 being snubbed for the Emmys. "I am disappointed for Director Hwang and the cast," says Bajaria, finding it "surprising" that this "excellence in television and excellence in storytelling" was not "recognized." Check out this excerpt from her interview:
"Squid Game had an incredible cultural impact.

“I’m trying to come up with a new word word for excited,” “Andor” creator Tony Gilroy said just a few hours after his show, set in the “Star Wars” universe, racked up 14 Emmy nominations. “I know that’s my job, but I’m having trouble coming up with something really, truly original to say.”

With 14 Emmy nominations Tuesday or the second season of Disney+/Lucasfilm’s Andor — the third most ever for a Star Wars show after the second and first seasons of The Mandalorian — you’d think there be some cause to celebrate.

Twenty-eight actors and reality hosts from diverse backgrounds were recognized by the Television Academy with Emmy nominations on Tuesday, not only an 18% drop from last year’s 34 but a near-low since 2019, when there were 26 non-Caucasian actors and hosts.
At its highest, the most diverse year for actors and reality competition/talk show hosts was 2021 per Deadline stats with a massive 49 nominees.
While there were only two categories last year devoid of nominees from diverse backgrounds, this year there were three.

Primetime Emmy nominations for the 2024-2025 television season are out, and Star Wars did fairly well against its competition. Even though Andor received over a dozen Emmy nominations in total for its second season, it's impossible to ignore the snubs that have left plenty of noteworthy performances trapped in the shadows.
Andor received 14 Emmy nominations total on Tuesday, including Outstanding Drama Series. Here is a full list of the Andor Emmy nominations, which actors made it on the list, and which ones should have been included but were tragically left behind:
Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series "Who Are You?"Outstanding Writing for Drama Series "Welcome to the Rebellion"Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Period Or Fantasy Program "Who Are You?"Outstanding Cinematography For A Series "Harvest"Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes "Harvest"Outstanding Picture Editing For A Drama Series "Who Are You?"Outstanding Music Composition For A Series (Original Dramatic Score) "Who Are You?...

The 2025 Emmy nominations are out, and while Andor soared with 14 total nods, one name was shockingly missing: Diego Luna. The actor, who delivered a career-defining performance as Cassian Andor, was snubbed for Best Actor in a Drama Series, leaving fans and critics alike scratching their heads.
Luna's performance in Andor season 2 was widely hailed as one of the best in modern Star Wars storytelling. Across 12 episodes, he navigated the transformation of Cassian from disillusioned survivor to burgeoning rebel with a raw intensity that didn’t require lightsaber duels or flashy effects to hit home. His quiet defiance, layered grief, and hard-earned conviction were the heartbeat of the show, skyrocketing Andor into prestige TV territory.
The Television Academy clearly did recognize the show’s quality. Andor received nominations for Outstanding Drama Series, Directing (Benjamin Caron), Writing (Beau Willimon), Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series (Forest Whitaker), Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance...

The nominees for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced this morning, and the HBO limited series The Penguin earned a total of 24 Emmy nominations for the 2025 awards.
While a substantial amount of the 24 come from the technical and craft categories, the major awards the show is up for includes a top-tier nomination for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
The show's cast received major acclaim as well, with Colin Farrell nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor and Cristin Milioti for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Additionally, Deirdre O'Connell was honored with a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress.

Daniel Fienberg: Say what you will about Emmy voters, but when they like something, they Really like it.
My biggest takeaway, as I’m picking my way through the nominations for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, is how top-heavy the list is. Twenty-seven nominations for Severance! Twenty-four nominations for The Penguin! Twenty-three nominations apiece for The Studio and The White Lotus!
So many of these juggernauts received nominations so completely across the board — the dominance of White Lotus and Severance in the supporting categories is especially impressive — that I found myself more distracted by the standouts from those casts who didn’t get nominated than those who did. Where’s Rhenzy Feliz for The Penguin? Or Chase Sui Wonders for The Studio? Or Lisa from Blackpink for The White Lotus (or Carrie Coon’s vacation buddies, I suppose)?
It’s a myopia that leads to the consistent impression that...

The 2025 Emmy Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday, July 15, and one might assume the job of Emmy voters is much more difficult now than it was 20 years ago. While there have always been a good number of series being shown, with all the streaming services currently, there are almost too many to choose from.
Some series or actor is going to be snubbed in the awards process. Perhaps some smaller-budget show doesn't get the flowers it deserves. Maybe an overlooked actor performing in a quality PBS Masterpiece program gets forgotten.
It happens every year, and snubs will continue to occur. Not everyone can get nominated, of course, but many series should have been. Popularity isn't the mark of quality, after all. Only quality marks quality.
