Image
In January 2008, Hollywood lost an irreplaceable gem in actor Heath Ledger, who passed away from an accidental overdose as a result of prescription drug abuse. Over a decade later, he is still remembered for his brilliance in the industry, which is reflected in all the productions in which he was involved. Among these is his breakout role in the 1999 rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You, which has since gained popularity as a cult classic, often dubbed one of the greatest rom-coms of all time.

Released on March 31, 1999, 10 Things I Hate About You will find its way to a new streaming home this summer, months after landing on Peacock earlier in January. Per Hulu’s schedule for next month’s additions to its catalog, the coming-of-age movie is set to debut on the streamer on August 1. '10 Things I Hate About You' Sequel & Potential Trilogy In The Works
Image
"How do I loathe thee? Let me count the ways?" That's the tagline featured on many of the posters for the 1999 teen classic,10 Things I Hate About You. Based on William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew," the film was a fun balance of the playwright's sensibilities and the teen movie boom that exploded during the late 90s. It's one of the best-received films of its kind from that era and is still beloved today, which could be why the film's director, Gil Junger, is confident that a sequel will be successful. In fact, he has ideas that will go beyond making just one follow-up.

During a chat with People, Junger revealed that he is working on a follow-up to 10 Things I Hate About You and is penning the script with Naye Elle James. The director also says that the film's original producer, Andrew Lazar, is on board,...

March 6 Will Be a Fantastic Day for Anne Hathaway Fans
Image
Miramax Films’ musical fantasy comedy Ella Enchanted will officially be heading to a brand-new streaming home soon. The 2004 movie was led by Academy Award-winner Anne Hathaway in one of her earliest movie roles, following the success of 2001’s The Princess Diaries.

Beginning on March 6, Ella Enchanted will be available for streaming on Prime Video. In the film, Hathaway portrayed the titular role of Ella, a young woman whose fairy godmother granted her the magical gift of obedience. This ability requires her to immediately obey any command she has been given. However, as she grows up, this so-called gift proves to be more of a curse than a blessing, since it gives anyone the power to take advantage of her. During its theatrical run, it received negative reviews from critics and fans of the novel, with a Tomatometer rating of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes. This was due to its lack of faithfulness from the original source material.

Reese Witherspoon’s ‘Legally Blonde’ Was Nearly Destroyed With a Rom-Com Style Ending
Image
Reese Witherspoon’s 2001 Legally Blonde broke more barriers than one. While it started with a classic rom-com girl getting the guy back vibe, it slowly turned into a transformational journey of Witherspoon’s character Elle Woods.

Interestingly, the writers initially had a different ending planned for the movie. While the final version focused on Elle Woods coming into her own, the initial movie wanted to highlight that she did get her boyfriend back.

The test audience, however, wasn’t on board with that. As, according to them, it took away the entire message the movie wanted to showcase. So, the writers came up with the idea to change the narrative to fit the theme better. Hence, the all-time classic was born.

10 Best Movies Like Legally Blonde
Image
For whatever reason, Hollywood doesn't produce movies like "Legally Blonde" anymore. Brightly colored, fun, and undeniably optimistic, this Reese Witherspoon comedy succinctly captures the zeitgeist of the early 2000s, and it now serves as a time capsule to a more innocent time when it felt possible for a fashion merchandising student to usurp the Harvard snobs and become a full-fledged lawyer. Truly, director Robert Luketic's upbeat tone, to say nothing of Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith's snappy script, is a key reason for the film's enduring success -- it's the perfect underdog tale, featuring a likable character worth rooting for and an uplifting message about staying true to yourself and persevering in the face of adversity.

"Legally Blonde" earned solid reviews from critics, earned a pair of Golden Globe nominations, including one for Witherspoon, made a killing at the box office, led to two sequels (and counting), and even spawned a musical.

Dylan Mulvaney Dreams Of Making A Trans ‘Legally Blonde’: “I Wanna Play Elle Woods”
Image
Dylan Mulvaney is dreaming big, and one of the characters she would like to play is Elle Woods from Legally Blonde.

In a recent interview, the singer and actress said that her dream theater role was to play Glinda in Wicked, but her “dream dream” was to portray the Harvard Law School student that Reese Witherspoon famously played in the 2001 film.

“My dream though is to do a trans Legally Blonde,” Mulvaney said in an interview with IMDb during SXSW. “I wanna play Elle Woods and have maybe a trans Emmett and a trans Paulette. And I think what’s so cool about plugging trans people into existing stories is it inherently changes what the topic is, but in a way that you don’t actually have to do much to the script because it becomes something different — but actually, I think it makes it even more powerful.”

Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles Reinvented Shakespeare Before Anyone But You
Image
Anyone But You revives rom-coms with nods to Shakespeare, just like 10 Things I Hate About You did 25 years before. 10 Things I Hate About You modernizes Shakespeare's themes, giving Kat more agency and respect while removing misogynistic undertones. The clever screenplay of 10 Things I Hate About You stands out among teen comedies, becoming a timeless classic.

The recently released Anyone But You not only helped revive romantic comedies in the theatrical landscape, but it also looked to the work of William Shakespeare for inspiration in a way that used to make it clear that the 16th-century English playwright had his finger on the pulse of the human condition that would prove to be timeless. Much Ado About Nothing serves as the blueprint for the Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell-led rom-com, but it's not the first film of this nature to use one of Shakespeare's plays to spin...

Female Expendables Movie Being Canceled Proves A Huge Franchise Problem
Image
The all-female Expendables spin-off is officially canceled and highlights the fact the series shouldn't have sidelined female action icons for so long. The Expendables series began with the mission statement to unite the most iconic action movie heroes. Over the course of three entries it did an impressive job, gathering Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Harrison Ford and many more. To date, however, The Expendables has only featured two female team members in Yu Nan's Maggie and Rouda Rousey's Luna. That's largely because creator Sylvester Stallone planned an all-female spin-off dubbed The Expendabelles.

Various names were thrown around for The Expendabelles, with Sigourney Weaver being suggested by Stallone himself - though she swiftly passed, per The Hollywood Reporter. In November 2022, the same outlet got Millennium Films' exec Jeffrey Greenstein to finally reveal the project had been scrapped. Greenstein stated "... my problem with that project was always trying to find...

Fast Times At Ridgemont High Signaled A Shake-Up In Studio Filmmaking
Waters
If there was a Mount Rushmore of teen movie figureheads, it should include the Waters Brothers, the writing duo of Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, John Hughes (self explanatory), and Amy Heckerling.

Coming-of-age films are nothing new, but the "teen film" as we know it today is a relatively recent phenomenon, with 1982's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" serving as the turning point for teen cinema. Before "Fast Times," films centered on teen stories weren't presented with authenticity to...

Selma Blair Weighs in on LGBTQ ‘Legally Blonde’ Original Ending: ‘Let’s Go with That’
Image
Any Cosmo girl would have known about the “Legally Blonde” alternate endings. But now star Selma Blair is finally weighing in on the scrapped LGBTQ original conclusion that showed Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) finding her happily ever after…with a surprising enemies-to-lovers twist.

During a 2021 oral history in honor of the film’s 20th anniversary, actress Jessica Cauffiel who played Elle’s best friend Margot told The New York Times that Elle and Vivian (Blair) ended up together, with romantic connotations.

“The first ending was Elle and Vivian in Hawaii in beach chairs, drinking margaritas and holding hands,” Cauffiel explained. “The insinuation was either they were best friends or they had gotten together romantically.”

However, audiences didn’t like the ending, so a few more were filmed.

“The second or third ending was a musical number on the courtroom steps, and as Elle came out, the judge, jury and everybody...

Turns Out, Paul Bettany Was Almost Cast as Elle's Love Interest, Emmett, in Legally Blonde
Image
It's been 20 years since the release of Legally Blonde, and we're still learning how the pretty much perfect cast came together. In a July 8 oral history of the film by The New York Times, casting director Joseph Middleton and screenwriter Karen McCullah discussed the different actors that were almost cast in the now-iconic roles; including WandaVision's Paul Bettany. "I loved Paul Bettany for the Luke [Wilson] role, but he was British, and they felt like it needed to be a real American," Middleton said of the Marvel star.

Even though Bettany was considered for the role, it seems that Luke Wilson was always destined to be Emmett. "We always called [the love interest Emmett] 'the Luke Wilson character' while we were writing it," McCullah added. "They saw some other actors, and finally Joseph was like, 'Maybe we should get Luke to play the Luke Wilson character.' I was like, 'You think?'" And the rest is history.

Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor Sign on to Write the Screenplay For Reese Witherspoon's Legally Blonde 3
Image
Back in 2018, Reese Witherspoon announced that a third Legally Blonde movie was headed our way. At the same time, she confirmed that she would be reprising her iconic role as Elle Woods - and we were excited, to say the least. But ever since . . . it's kind of been crickets. The film was originally set for release in February 2020 (which obviously never happened), and the original screenwriters, Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah, were reportedly returning to pen the sequel.

But finally, on Monday, Deadline confirmed that not only is the movie still on the horizon but Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor have signed on to write the screenplay. They also confirmed that "Reese Witherspoon remains aboard, reprising her role as attorney Elle Woods," and that the film is "producing through her Hello Sunshine studio with the franchise's original producer Marc Platt."

Legally Blonde 3 won't be a rewrite of Smith and McCullah's original version,...
