HGTV is dusting off an old format for a new collectibles series. The Discovery-owned cable net has greenlighted six new episodes of Cash in the Attic, hosted by Courtney Tezeno. The series will premiere later in 2021.

Tezeno, who co-hosted Quibi’s Close Up by E! News, is a passionate collector. She teams on Cash in the Attic with of expert appraisers including Elyse Luray, Jean David Michel and Marvin Jules to sort through homes looking for classic toys, vintage comics, original video games and other valuable pop culture treasures. Once the items are sold for top dollar at auction, the homeowners will use the money to fund life-changing dreams, such as a downpayment on a new house or a dream vacation.

Do you own your collection or does your collection own you? Collection Intervention follows expert appraiser and auctioneer Elyse Luray as she helps people whose collections are taking over their lives to the extreme. So, we've put together a few (real-life) scenarios where it really is time to get an intervention. Seriously.

1. Your collection is hidden.

There is a fine line between hoarding and collecting. If you, yourself are hiding your collection far, far away, are reluctant to admit it exists and are not even enjoying it, then our advice is get a more interesting, less expensive secret. Basically, you can run but you can’t hide.

2. You cry at the very thought of being parted from one tiny teeny item/ you still cry at that time a long, long time ago when you did part with that one tiny teeny item.

Your collection is not a part of you.

Collection Intervention...

Mike was a true fan of "Battlestar Galactica," so he was absolutely flummoxed when Elyse Luray brought the original Apollo, Richard Hatch, to see his massive collection of memorabilia and collectibles from the show. Mike had it mostly crammed into his garage, which is why Luray and "Collection Intervention" were brought in.

Hatch was impressed with the scope of the collection, but not the organization of it. "All this wonderful stuff just thrown, packed, smudged together," Hatch said to Mike. "Would you sit down with Elyse? Are you willing to do that for Captain Apollo?”

"See, you're not playing fair," Mike insisted.

It may not have been fair, but it worked. While Mike didn't part with any of his precious "BSG" items, he did part with some other collectibles for a couple hundred bucks, Meanwhile, his wife put up some of his pieces in his comic book store.

That's right.

There's a fine line between collecting for fun and collecting out of obsession, and "Collection Intervention" helps those people who may have crossed that line -- or are stepping dangerously close to it. This week, they spotlighted Joe and his massive comic book collection.

He keeps them in comic long boxes, which weigh in at about 50 pounds apiece. But while his collection is well maintained, those boxes are taking over the house as Joe estimates he has about 30,000 comic books, or as he put it, "You’re looking at two tons of comic books."

Joe loves his comic books, calling them "little family units" and "awesome." His fiance, Rebekah, says he sitting with them not just to read them, but sometimes just to be with them.

We told you last week about tonight’s premiere of the new Syfy show Collection Intervention, hosted by Elyse Luray. Ms. Luray may look familiar to you from other shows; that could be because she is one of the hosts on PBS’s History Detectives. She also appeared as an appraiser on The Nate Berkus Show, Style Network’s Clean House NY!, Hgtv’s If Walls Could Talk, PBS’ Antiques Road Show and CBS’ The Early Show.

Ms. Luray spent eleven years at Christie’s auction house as an auctioneer and a Vice President of the Popular Arts Department. Some collections she appraised include the archives of Lucas Films, Dreamworks, Chuck Jones’ personal collection, Warner Brothers, Hanna Barbara, Hard Rock Cafe and more.

Earlier today, reported on the news that Syfy would be adapting Stephen King’s The Eyes of the Dragon. Syfy has officially announced that project as part of their new development slate, which includes 28 new scripted and reality projects:

Syfy is having its Upfront tonight, during which they present their schedule and slate of projects in development to potential advertisers, and the announcements are flowing. An adaptation of a Stephen King novel into a miniseries, a new Charlaine Harris weekly series, a great movie being adapted into a weekly series, and a whole load of new reality shows may be in our future. First up, new series! We’ve already told you about some of these, but now we’re getting official word. For scripted series, Syfy is now confirming that Defiance, the series that will affect and be affected by the game of the same name, will be coming in 2013.
