Several great stories about the underbelly of Victorian London get smushed together to yield something less great but often extremely entertaining in Steven Knight’s new Hulu drama, A Thousand Blows.
Knight comes off less like a master storyteller here than a highly enthusiastic autodidact learning new things and then flailing a bit in making connections. That just means that, at its worst, A Thousand Blows — which caps these first six episodes with a “To Be Continued” title card and clips from additional upcoming episodes — will send interested observers online in search of the true stories about all-female criminal gangs, nascent gloved boxing and 19th-century concert hall performers.
So you’ve got well-acted, well-produced, genre-bending period television and an inspiration to do further research? You could do far worse, and the wildly prolific Knight — he of Peaky Blinders, The Veil and All the Light We Cannot See — has done both better and worse.

The question will likely prickle the audience of Chris Andrews’ feature directorial debut “Bring Them Down” early and often: When, exactly, were these people fucked? Pardon our language, but if you balk at the use of the f-word to classify the miserable, bloody, meaningless lives of a pair of Irish sheep farmers and everyone around them — people who are well and truly fucked — than Andrews’ dismal Irish feature is not at all for you. Fans of dramas so dark and bitter that they make the most screwed-up parts of the Bible look funny and frisky? They’ll likely spark to what Andrews is dishing out here, but some questionable storytelling conceits eventually dilute even that power.
Things are already fraught when the film opens, as an SUV goes careening down an otherwise quiet Irish lane.

Mubi has unveiled a new clip from “Bring Them Down,” starring Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan (“Saltburn”) and Christopher Abbott (“Poor Things”), ahead of its Feb. 7 theatrical release in the U.S., U.K., Mexico, Canada and Ireland.
The tense thriller, which marks the feature directorial debut of Christopher Andrews, follows two warring farming families in rural west Ireland. The story centers on Michael (Abbott), a reclusive farmer living with his ailing father Ray (Colm Meaney), whose ongoing conflict with rival farmer Gary (Paul Ready) and his unpredictable son Jack (Keoghan) escalates into a series of increasingly violent confrontations. The cast also includes Nora-Jane Noone (“The Magdalene Sisters”) as Caroline, Susan Lynch (“Ready Player One”) as Peggy, and Aaron Heffernan (“Brassic”) as Lee.

This fervently acted Irish film about a dispute between farmers begins with some sheep rustling and ends in Peckinpah-esque violent horror
A tang of bad blood rises from this flawed revenge-feud drama set in the rural west of Ireland from first-time feature director Christopher Andrews, in which the audience might be shocked by male violence but are at the same time required to sympathise with the male characters’ inner wounded sensitivity. It’s strongly and fervently acted, but for me finally let down by a bizarre and almost farcical flourish of Peckinpah-esque violent horror, which undermines the accessible emotional reality of what has been happening, and which doesn’t quite do justice to the sustained effort required for a specific act of grotesque butchery.
The title refers at one level to a decision to bring livestock down from the grazing hillside to the fields, but also implies a terrible, willed catastrophe.

The latest trailer for Hulu’s A Thousand Blows boxing drama has The Crown star Erin Doherty as Mary Carr trading barbs outside the ring with feared bare knuckle pugilist Sugar Goodson, played by Peaky Blinders star Stephen Graham, to grow her criminal empire.
“Watch me kill him,” a menacing Goodson, the self-declared emperor of London’s East End boxing world, tells Carr, who introduces herself as Queen of an all-female criminal gang known as the Forty Elephants. “Can’t happen,” she defiantly replies, as Carr looks to exploit the talents of Kirby, a Jamaican boxer played by Hezekiah Moscow, who challenges Goodson for survival, and dominance, in the illegal boxing ring.
The result is three lives colliding for control of the criminal underbelly of Victorian London’s East End. A Thousand Blows, based on real-life figures and stories, is produced by The Story Collective in a co-production with Matriarch Productions...

"I told you to kill them." Mubi has debuted the full official trailer for Bring Them Down, an Irish thriller about rival families. This initially premiered at the TIFF & Fantastic Fest & London Film Festivals last year, now set for a US debut in February. An Irish shepherding family thrust into battle on several fronts: internal strife, hostility within the family, rivalry with another farmer. Paternalism, heritage, and the generational trauma cycle through the cultural prism of Ireland. TIFF adds: "Bring Them Down bristles with twists and tension, its gorgeous pastoral landscapes turning into sites of escalating violence. Yet the film never settles for simplistic hero/villain binaries. Instead, brilliantly shifts perspective, revealing the fears and aspirations driving all its characters — a strategy that succeeds in no small part due to Abbott and Keoghan, who share an incredible ability to reveal for the camera what their characters are hell-bent on hiding.

A film firmly seated in the pernicious nature of toxic masculinity and its corrosive reverberations through the generations, writer/director Christopher Andrews’ bold feature debut Bring Them Down isn’t one for the faint of heart. Pitting Christopher Abbott’s Michael, the tortured last son of a farming family against Barry Keoghan’s wayward impetuous Jack, Andrews’ thriller uses the microcosm of two warring families set against one another in the harsh landscape of rural west Ireland to explore the increasingly prevalent instinct to ensure that even the smallest slight is answered tenfold, igniting spirals of violence from which no one escapes unscathed. The unforgiving revenge tale also puts paid to the regressive view that audiences are hesitant to engage with non-English dialogue by being one of two feature debuts nominated for BIFA’s The Douglas Hickox Award this year to prominently feature the Irish language. In our interview Andrews...

Daddy Issues, the BBC sitcom written by Danielle Ward and starring David Morrissey and Aimee Lou Wood, has been renewed for a second series.
Sex Education is one of those shows where you could legitimately call every main actor a breakout star. Asa Butterfield continues to star in a wide variety of films, Ncuti Gatwa is the Fifteenth Doctor, and Emma Mackey and Connor Swindells snagged roles in Barbie.
Aimee Lou Wood is no exception. She was recently seen in the terrific Living, opposite Bill Nighy, and British comedy Seize Them!
She recently headined BBC sitcom Daddy Issues opposite David Morrissey, which has now been renewed for a second series.

Every so often, there comes a film that sticks with you long after your first viewing. For me, that film is Christopher Andrews directorial debut, Bring Them Down, which premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. The story chronicles a turf war between neighboring families in a rural Ireland town, where trauma, desperation, and revenge are at the forefront. Featuring an exceptional Christopher Abbott performance and stunning cinematography from Nick Cooke, the film reveals the ugly side of survival and proving your worth. Bring Them Down is 105 minutes worth of violence and misery, but its great storytelling, nonetheless.

Yes, after a seven-year hiatus, we're being treated to a compelling new mystery, filled with shocking twists and turns.

The episode saw Catherine follow her sister Clare (Siobhan Finneran) and her boyfriend Neil (Con O'Neill) as they seemingly escorted her grandson to see his father Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) in a Sheffield prison behind her back.
To follow them undetected, Catherine borrowed a car belonging to Alison Garrs (Susan Lynch), the mother of series two murderer Daryl (Robert Emms). In the series two finale, Alison killed her son and was arrested by a hesitant Catherine.

The return of Happy Valley – seven years after its second season – might just constitute the first “pinch me” moment of 2023. By the second episode, it’s back to business as usual. Sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) is rolling up her sleeves to do some good ol’ police work, while Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) is up to no good and sporting a new hairdo.
Et tu Brute?
Last week’s episode left Catherine with the revelation that her post-Tommy life of domestic bliss isn’t quite as blissful as she had thought. Someone has been taking Ryan (Rhys Connah) to see his no-good father in prison – but who? Episode two gives us the answer straight off the bat: Clare! More specifically, it’s Clare (Siobhan Finneran) and Neil (Con O’Neil) but mostly, we’re just shocked about Clare.
Catherine drops her jaw in utter disbelief, muttering: “S***.” Then comes the inevitable follow-up question: Why?...

Warning: this Happy Valley review contains spoilers.
Behold, the cold fury of Catherine Cawood. The hurt rage radiating off her in that final scene could power a warship. The next time we see Clare, she’ll just be a scarf floating in a puddle on the floor of that Sheffield cafe, Catherine having disintegrated her with a look.
Instead of Hulk-smashing her way out of the gaffer’s office and heading straight for Clare as expected when Catherine learned of her sister’s betrayal, she absorbed the shock and kept it all inside. It was an excellent dramatic choice that meant an episode of extra-flinty stares and heavyweight tension. Every domestic scene – Catherine and Clare, Catherine and Ryan – bore the heft of that unexpressed anger, turning each exchange into the split-second after a grenade’s pin has been pulled but before it’s thrown. The explosion’s coming, but when?...

After what feels like forever, Happy Valley is returning for a third series.
The brilliant BBC crime drama from Sally Wainwright wedged itself into viewers’ hearts with two series released in 2014 and 2016, respectively.
It received further acclaim in the US after being released on Netflix.

Now, in the BBC’s first new drama of 2023, Sarah Lancashire’s detective Catherine Cawood will be returning to our screens.
Considering it’s been six years, you’re probably in need of a little referesher ahead of the forthcoming episodes.

Sarah Lancashire and James Norton are set to reunite when “Happy Valley” returns to screens in January, the BBC confirmed today.
The third and supposedly final season of the show will drop in the U.K. on New Year’s Day, airing on BBC One and streaming platform iPlayer. (A U.S. release date has not yet been confirmed).
Lancashire returns as Sergeant Catherine Cawood in the six-episode season, this time navigating relationships with her teenage grandson Ryan (played by Rhys Connah) and sister Clare (Siobhan Finneran) whilst attempting to solve what appears to be a gangland murder. The BBC have also released a 10-second teaser of the new season, in which Royce can be seen brooding in prison while Seargant Cawood, dressed in uniform, is on assignment, with a siren blaring behind her.

"He's chasing me right now!" Well Go USA has re-released their official trailer for the US premiere of the Irish revenge thriller Bad Day for the Cut, which originally premiered years ago at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival playing in the Midnight section. Even with a small release back then it has been lost in time, but Well Go has officially released it on VOD and Blu-ray in the US for anyone interested in catching up with it. A middle-aged Irish farmer, who still lives at home with his mother, sets off on a mission of revenge when his mother is murdered. The indie film stars Nigel O'Neill, Susan Lynch, Józef Pawłowski, Stella McCusker, and Stuart Graham. Reviews out of the festivals years ago say that this is "a taut vengeance thriller that doesn't completely come together as one would hope but has enough solid entertainment value, well-directed visuals, and nasty...
