21 Years After Buffy The Vampire Slayer Spinoff's Most Controversial Death, Og Star Increases Hope For Reboot Return
Image
One original Buffy the Vampire Slayer star wants to return for the revival series. In 2024, it was announced that Buffy the Vampire Slayer received a pilot order from Hulu for a sequel show. Sarah Michelle Gellar will reprise her role as Buffy Summers alongside a new Slayer played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao will direct the pilot, with Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman as writers and showrunners.

In an interview with IGN, Cordelia Chase actor Charisma Carpenter shares her hopes that her character will return. Carpenter praises the creative team and her excitement about the reboot as a whole. She describes Cordelia's death as "unjust" and believes that it would be "poetic" for her to return. While she does not know exactly how her character could return, she has faith in the show's narrative.

I am so excited for fans, and I know it will be fantastic because of who's involved.

Big Helium Dog: long-lost sketch comedy executive produced by Kevin Smith is finally coming to Blu-ray and DVD
Image
Back in 2000, I made the eight-hour journey to Red Bank, New Jersey to attend Kevin Smith‘s Vulgarthon film festival – and one of the movies I got to see at that festival was writer/director Brian Lynch’s sketch comedy Big Helium Dog, which Smith executive produced alongside his longtime producing partner Scott Mosier. I came out of that screening feeling that Big Helium Dog was one of the funniest movies I had ever seen, and I was looking forward to being able to add a copy of the film to my DVD collection… but the DVD release we were told was forthcoming never happened. Now, decades later, the movie is finally set to make its way out into the world on September 16th, when Big Choice Video brings it not just to DVD, but also to Blu-ray! Copies are available for pre-order at This Link.

Here’s the synopsis:...

A Better Place: 1997 thriller executive produced by Kevin Smith is now on Blu-ray
Kevin Smith
Back in 2000, I made the eight-hour journey to Red Bank, New Jersey to attend Kevin Smith‘s Vulgarthon film festival – and one of the movies I was blown away by that day was writer/director Vincent Pereira’s thriller A Better Place, which Smith executive produced alongside his longtime producing partner Scott Mosier. I was enthralled by this movie, which a friend of mine once described as the most realistic movie he had ever seen about troubled teenagers / teen violence. So when Synapse Films released it on DVD the following the year, I immediately bought a copy so I could watch the movie again and again. And listen to the commentary over and over (and listen to the hidden Easter egg “drunken goof” commentary even more). Now, Smodcastle Cinema has brought a director’s cut of the film to Blu-ray and copies are available for purchase at This Link! If...

Image
Michael Mann, Francis Ford Coppola, Nicolas Cage, Jim Carrey and Josh Brolin were among the many entertainment industry figures who paid tribute to Val Kilmer after news of his death was announced.

Kilmer died of pneumonia in Los Angeles, his daughter, actress Mercedes Kilmer, told The New York Times. He was 65. The actor was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2015.

His death was announced as the actor was meant to be arriving for a rare red carpet appearance at the Beverly Hills Film Festival on Tuesday night. “It was a shock to find this out. The much-loved and incredibly versatile actor had a diverse filmography, excelling both as a leading man (Batman Forever, The Saint, Top Secret!,...

A Rejected James Gunn Script Nearly Teamed Up Two Comedic Titans In The 1990s
Image
James Gunn seemingly reached the nerd mountaintop upon becoming the co-chairman (with Peter Safran) of DC Studios in 2022. Nearly 30 years before that, however, he was just another struggling screenwriter slugging it out in the film industry trenches. Gunn earned his first screenplay credit as the co-writer of Troma Entertainment's "Tromeo and Juliet," which was not the calling-card effort that put him on Hollywood's radar. That would be his script for "The Specials," a superhero comedy that became a film under the direction of Craig Mazin in 2000.

Before that film was even made, though, Gunn found himself pitching projects to the major studios, one of which was a Silver Surfer movie at 20th Century Fox. Gunn knocked out a treatment that he once claimed was a "huge story, cosmic as hell," and he might've hung around to write the screenplay had another project not been dropped on his doorstep.

In 1999, filmmaker Jay Roach,...

Even 25 years after its initial release, The Sims still remains one of the most popular game franchises of all time. Players are asked to create an avatar, and from there, the world is there. With an abundance of expansion packs and Dlc available, The Sims has managed to transform a typical social simulation game into one of the most lucrative franchises in the world.

Despite its immense success, the game has yet to branch out into other mediums, such as film, TV, or books. While Margot Robbie announced that she is set to produce a movie surrounding the franchise in 2024, fans still want more. Why Brian Lynch's 1999 Muppet Movie Was Canceled (& Why Fans Would've Loved It)
Image
The Muppets have been an integral part of popular culture since 1955 and have continued to match up against some of the finest human comedians. While the characters are humorous in their own right, many fans appreciate it when the creatures parody other hit moments, such as popular movies or music videos. As such, Jim Henson's prized creations prove that even the silliest of puppets can become hit movie stars.

Although The Muppet Show managed to make bold moves on primetime television, the franchise also made an impact on the silver screen. From The Muppet Movie in 1979 to the more recent Muppets Haunted Mansion, these films showcase the franchise's unique qualities in their best form. Yet, a canceled Muppets project from 1999 may have helped the franchise get out of its slump a lot sooner.

Hollywood Pays Tribute to David Lynch: “A Gracious Man and Fearless Artist”
Image
Iconic filmmaker David Lynch died on January 16th at the age of 78. Artists, creatives, and members of the film community at large took to social media to express their gratitude for Lynch’s visionary, distinct work.

Longtime collaborator and friend Kyle MacLachlan wrote a lengthy tribute on Instagram, saying he owed “my entire career, and life really” to Lynch’s vision. “I will miss him more than the limits of my language can tell and my heart can bear,” he said. “My world is that much fuller because I knew him and that much emptier now that he’s gone.”

Naomi Watts, who starred in Mulholland Drive, said her “heart is broken.” She added, “The world will not be the same without him. His creative mentorship was truly powerful. He put me on the map.”

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Steven Spielberg opened up about his own relationship with Lynch.

David Lynch Remembered by Steven Spielberg, James Gunn, Melanie Lynskey and Others for His ‘Immortal’ Influence, Originality
Image
Steven Spielberg, James Gunn, Kumail Nanjiani, Melanie Lynskey and more creatives in Hollywood reacted in mourning and admiration to the death of iconic filmmaker David Lynch, who died Thursday at 78.

“I loved David’s films. ‘Blue Velvet,’ ‘Mulholland Drive’ and ‘Elephant Man’ defined him as a singular, visionary dreamer who directed films that felt handmade,” Spielberg said in a statement. “I got to know David when he played John Ford in ‘The Fabelmans.’ Here was one of my heroes — David Lynch playing one of my heroes. It was surreal and seemed like a scene out of one of David’s own movies. The world is going to miss such an original and unique voice. His films have already stood the test of time and they always will.”

Shrek 5 Gets A New, Later Release Date As Minions 3 Is Moved Up By An Entire Year
Image
Deadline (via Toonado.com) has learned that Shrek 5 is now set to open on Wednesday, December 23, 2026. The long-awaited sequel had originally been scheduled for July 1, 2026, so while this delay isn't too big, those extra five months are going to sting for impatient Shrek fans.

On the plus side, Minions 3 has shifted from June 30, 2027, to that July 1 slot. That's a huge jump forward and an indication work on the movie must be progressing well.

It's also been revealed that an untitled Illumination event movie has moved from March 19, 2027 to Minions 3's vacant June date.

Shrek 5 is being released to coincide with DreamWorks' 25th anniversary, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz all set to reprise their respective roles as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona. Shrek franchise veterans Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon will be at the movie's helm.

Dorhn worked on the second and third movies as...

Image
Universal Pictures is making exciting changes to its animation release schedule, giving fans something to look forward to from two beloved franchises.

DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek 5 is now set to hit theaters on December 23, 2026, moving from its original summer release date of July 1, 2026. The holiday release will align perfectly with the franchise’s 25th anniversary, bringing back the voices of Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Fiona.

Directed by longtime franchise contributors Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, the movie will also feature Brad Ableson as co-director. Producers include Gina Shay and Chris Meledandri, who are known for their work on other successful animated projects like Trolls and Minions.

Since its debut in 2001, the Shrek franchise has earned over $2.9 billion globally and has become a cultural phenomenon, spawning musicals, theme park attractions, and even a global touring show. The last installment, Shrek Forever After,...

Universal Pictures Adjusts Animation Schedule: ‘Minions 3’ Moves Up, ‘Shrek 5’ Delayed
Steve Carell, Chris Renaud, Jemaine Clement, Miranda Cosgrove, Pierre Coffin, Elsie Fisher, and Dana Gaier in Despicable Me (2010)
Universal Pictures changed its animation schedule on Friday by moving the release dates for two of its most popular franchises. ‘Minions 3’ will come out earlier than planned, and ‘Shrek 5′ has been pushed back to the winter holidays of 2026.

The intended release date for “Minions 3” was June 30, 2027, but it will now be July 1, 2026. This move puts it during the busy Independence Day weekend. The choice came after the huge success of the Despicable Me franchise. It has made over $5 billion at the box office worldwide, making it the highest-grossing animated film series ever.

The creative people of the first two films will return to the third Minions film. You can count on Pierre Coffin to return as the movie’s director and to voice the famous yellow figures. Brian Lynch wrote the script. He is known for writing “The Secret Life of Pets.” The movie is also being worked...

‘Shrek 5’ Pushes Release to December 2026, ‘Minions 3’ Moves Up to Summer 2026
Image
Universal Pictures is adjusting its movie release calendar for upcoming titles from two venerable animation franchises.

The studio announced Friday that DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek 5 is now set for release on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2026, after previously having been dated for July 1, 2026. Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon are directing Shrek 5 with Brad Ableson as co-director. Gina Shay and Chris Meledandri produce the film that sees the return of voice stars Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey) and Cameron Diaz (Fiona).

In a twinned move, Minions 3 from Illumination is now set to hit theaters on July 1, 2026, moving up from its previously planned release date of June 30, 2027. Pierre Coffin, who directed the first three Despicable Me films and the first Minions spinoff movie, is helming Minions 3 from a script from Brian Lynch. Coffin voices the yellow mischief-makers that were introduced as sidekicks to former supervillain Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) in the 2010 title Despicable Me.

Universal Delays ‘Shrek 5’, Moves Up ‘Minions 3’ & More
Image
Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek 5 will now open on Wednesday, December 23, 2026, instead of July 1 next year.

At the same time, the studio said Friday it is moving up Illumination’s Minions 3 from June 30, 2027 to Shrek 5‘s previous July 2026 date. That’s because the Minions and Gru have ruled the Independence Day frame for quite some time, most recently with Despicable Me 4 minting a $230M global opening last summer.

Another shift going on at Universal: an untitled Illumination event movie will move from March 19, 2027 to Wednesday June 30, 2027.

Shrek 5 is timed to Dwa’s 25th anniversary. Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz as reported are reprising their roles as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona, respectively. Directors are Shrek franchise veterans Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon. Dohrn (Trolls franchise) worked on the second and third Shrek films as a writer and artist and as Head...

‘Shrek 5’ Pushed to December 2026, ‘Minions 3’ Moves Up to July 2026
Image
Shrek and the Minions will both be on the big screen in 2026.

Universal Pictures announced Friday that the highly-anticipated animated movies are swapping their theatrical release dates, with DreamWorks Animation’s “Shrek 5” pushing back from July 1, 2026 to Wednesday, Dec. 23, while Illumination’s “Minions 3” moves into that summer 2026 window from its planned June 30, 2027 date.

Universal has also shifted the release of an untitled Illumination event film from March 19, 2027 to the June date.

While December 2026 might seem far, far away, “Shrek 5” arrives in time for the franchise’s 25th anniversary and marks the grand return of original “Shrek” stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz to voice Shrek, Donkey and Fiona.

Beginning with 2001’s “Shrek” (which won the first Oscar for best animated feature), the four “Shrek” films have earned more than $2.9 billion worldwide, spawning a global live-touring show and an award-winning Broadway musical that earned eight Tony nominations and 12 Drama Desk nominations,...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Houses Some Awful Characters, But It Quietly Redeemed Its Most-Hated Character
Image
Not every character from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe has the luxury of being as adored as its title character. Xander Harris has been largely considered the worst, while some fans hated Dawn just as much. However, few Buffyverse characters drew as much ire as Angel's Connor, the son of the spinoff's lead.

The comic book continuation of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe, particularly the Angel series from Idw Publishing, was a saving grace for Connor. Played by Vincent Kartheiser during the show's last three seasons, the half-demon son of vampires Angel and Darla constantly fought an internal (and external) battle with a father he was trained to hate in a hell dimension.

While Connor's story could've been a compelling arc, it largely amounted to some icky storytelling that even Cordelia's Charisma Carpenter calls problematic. The show never had the opportunity to truly expand on Connor's redemption story,...

Believe It or Not, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Did Confirm Angel x Spike as Canon In the Most Unexpected Way
Image
Angel and Spike of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame has unexpectedly been canonized as a romance. Angel and Spike both pined for the affections of Buffy Summers, proving to be one of many reasons why one hated the other. They constantly fought over women and who was the better vampire. However, that hatred didn't stop the wishful thinking of fans who wanted to see the two vampires with souls together.

Such a romance was once implied in the actual show, but outright confirmed in Joss Whedon's canonical comic book continuations of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which were released after Buffy's seventh season and Angel's fifth season. In Angel #26 by Brian Lynch, Stephen Mooney, Tom Smith, Scorpion Studios, and Robbie Robbins, the official Buffyverse canon finally legitimizes a love affair between Angel and Spike, albeit in a Hollywood movie with Nicolas Cage in the title role.

Outside an unexpected big-screen lip-lock,...

A $1 Billion Illumination Threequel Is Streaming for Free in January
Image
The third installment in Illumination's Despicable Me franchise will drop on Tubi in the New Year. Despicable Me 3 (2017), starring Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig, will stream for free starting Jan. 1, 2025.

In the threequel, which earned more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office, Gru, voiced by Carell, meets his long-lost twin brother, Dru (also voiced by Carell), who is pretty much the opposite of Gru with his charming and cheerful personality. Together, they decide to team up to take down the villain, Balthazar Bratt (voiced by South Park’s Trey Parker), a former child star from the 1980s seeking revenge on the world.

In its review of Despicable Me 3, Cbr said the movie had no shortage of plot, but it tends to leap from one topic to the next with a “hyperactive whimsy” so that even those who are easily distracted will not be bored with the film.

Despicable Me director Chris Renaud opens up about the future he hopes to avoid for the franchise.

Per Deadline, Renaud was asked about the possibility of a live-action feature film featuring the Despicable Me franchise's instantly iconic Minions. "God, I hope not. That's my answer," Renaud responded quite simply. Renaud went on to note that he had no knowledge of such a concept being taken seriously by either Illumination or Universal Pictures, saying, "I mean if there were conversations, I haven't been privy to them. But for me, what defines the world is that it is animated, and it allows us to get away with what we get away with."

DC Studios is reportedly developing an animated Jurassic League movie produced by James Gunn. The original comic story involves Dino-Heroes fighting a prehistoric Darkseid to protect their world from destruction. Spike's Spaceship is Buffy Season 8's Most Unhinged Innovation (And It Rocks)
Image
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight was touted as a continuation of the critically-acclaimed series – and what's more, it promised even bigger storylines that never would have been possible with the show's budgets or technology of its time. No aspect of the comic series went more out on a limb than Spike's subplot, which featured him piloting an interdimensional spaceship with a crew of human-sized bugs.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight #36 – written by Joss Whedon, with art by Georges Jeanty – was the beginning of the season's final arc, and followed up on a surprising return for Spike, who arrived in a giant spaceship to rescue the other heroes from a demon attack at the end of the previous issue.

The spaceship, and its interdimensional origin, first appeared in the Spike miniseries – written by Brian Lynch, with art by Stephen Mooney and Franco Urru – released alongside Season Eight.

Keith Giffen, the longtime comics author and artist who co-created popular characters such as DC’s Lobo and the Jamie Reyes version of the Blue Beetle as well as Marvel’s Rocket Raccoon, has died. He was 70.

His family announced his death Wednesday on Facebook via a sardonic post pre-written by Giffen: “I told them I was sick…Anything not to go to New York Comic Con, Thanx,” adding “Bwah ha ha ha ha.”

The cause of death is being attributed to a stroke.

Giffen is best known for writing and drawing galaxy-spanning adventure book Legion of Super-Heroes in the 1980s and 1990s, at one point making the title one of DC’s top sellers. He was also the artist on early 1980s title Omega Men in which he and writer Roger Slifer introduced Lobo. At first a brutal villain, he was later turned into a parody of overly muscle-bound...

Desktops continued to perform well, growing 10 per cent as the category has returned to shipment levels comparable to before the pandemic.

Meanwhile, tablet shipments faced a relatively modest decline of 4 per cent, reaching 10.9 million shipments.

“Despite this, overall shipments have remained high when compared with pre-pandemic levels. The market is still quite healthy, despite various headwinds, such as mounting inflation, education market saturation and recent supply issues amid Chinese lockdowns,...
