Despite some solid reviews, "Vampire Academy" sadly became one of many series that were canceled after just one season. But why was this fantasy horror series cut short? The show was based on Richelle Mead's six-novel series, which had previously been adapted into a 2014 film of the same name. That film performed poorly at the box office and debuted to horrible reviews, which put a swift end to that iteration of the story. In 2021, however, hope arrived in the form of a TV series. Ultimately, that attempt to adapt the source material was similarly short-lived, but it did at least fare better critically.
In 2021, Deadline reported that Peacock had ordered a "Vampire Academy" series adaptation overseen by former "Vampire Diaries" showrunner Julie Plec and Marguerite MacIntyre, who played Elizabeth Forbes on that same show. At the time, Plec spoke...

Michele Mulroney is running for president of the Writers Guild of America West — unopposed, at least for now — after current president Meredith Stiehm termed out after nearly four years at the helm.
The union announced the news alongside the names of other initial candidates running for officer and board positions in its 2025 elections on Monday. Crucially, the election will determine the leaders that will guide the WGA West through its 2026 contract negotiations, its first with major film and television studios since the 148-day strike in 2023.
Though Mulroney is at present running without a challenger, that situation could change. Other union members can throw their hats in the ring for both officer and board positions by obtaining a minimum number of member signatures on a petition. Members have until July 23 to submit petitions.

The Vampire Diaries is one of the few shows that thrived with a huge ensemble cast, as every figure was so unique and individually important to the overarching story of the fantasy drama. Damon, Elena, and Stefan were obviously incredibly important, but the supporting cast also managed to enthrall fans with their own character arcs that were as interesting as the three protagonists. However, some of these beloved characters didn't last as long as the show did.
Some of them, like Jenna and Liz, met untimely deaths that left viewers completely heartbroken, while others exited the show to explore other endeavors. The Vampire Diaries handled some of these character departures very well, but others, like Meredith Fell, were never explained until episodes later and in passing. These fan favorites would have enhanced the show if they had stuck around, without a doubt, but they were sadly phased out of the show a little too soon.

It looks like Vampire Academy will remain staked after Peacock canceled it in January.
Executive producer and showrunner Marguerite MacIntyre shared an update on the efforts to find a new home after the cancellation.
Since the cancellation, MacIntyre has remained optimistic that the show could return in some capacity.
However, the latest update is somber as the former Vampire Diaries star said she "doesn't see any avenue" forward to keep the show alive.
"I have been wanting to say this for a very long time," MacIntyre said in a video posted on Twitter.
"Again, thank you for all your love for the show."
"Thanks for the incredible support. Thanks for you sticking with us through a lot of thin lately."
She continued, "I don't have good news. I don't see any avenue forward."
"And I just feel like now is the time to say I'm sorry about that; it wasn't for lack of trying.

It’s disappointing news for fans of Vampire Academy, as the show’s executive producer and showrunner Marguerite MacIntyre said she “doesn’t see any avenue” forward following the Peacock cancellation. Based on the novel series of the same name by Richelle Mead, Vampire Academy was co-created by MacIntyre and Julie Plec and premiered on September 15, 2022. However, it was canceled back in January after just one season. MacIntyre, who previously remained hopeful of landing a new home for a second season, has provided an update for fans, and, unfortunately, it’s not positive. “I have been wanting to say this for a very long time,” MacIntyre said in a video posted on Twitter. “Again, thank you for all your love for the show. Following Vampire Academy's months-long search for a new home, the cancelled series gets a bleak update. Based on the young adult novels of the same name, the fantasy horror show saw its end at Peacock after season 1. Since then, Vampire Academy producers have shopped their series to other vendors in hope of continuing Rose Hathaway's (Sisi Stringer) journey as a Dhampir guardian-in-training while at the St. Vladimir's Academy boarding school.

Almost exactly one year ago today, it was announced that the Peacock streaming service had given a straight-to-series order to the zombie show Dead Day, on which original Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson would serve as co-showrunner with his The Vampire Diaries co-creator Julie Plec. But now Variety has discovered that Peacock will not be moving forward with Dead Day after all. Thankfully, they are letting Williamson and Plec shop the series around to other outlets. Here’s hoping Dead Day will be able to find a new home.
If Dead Day ever makes it into the production, the show will follow an ensemble of characters as they navigate the annual “dead day,” when for one night the dead come back to complete unfinished business — be that to celebrate a night back on earth or to torment the living.

Peacock has opted not to move forward with creators Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson’s planned adaptation of the comic book series “Dead Day,” exactly one year to the day after the streaming service announced the project.

There are six novels in author Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy book series, plus a spin-off series called Bloodlines that also consists of six novels. Unfortunately, the live-action adaptations of this source material don’t have much luck. Back in 2014, the movie Vampire Academy (watch it Here) was released to theatres, and not many people really seemed to care to see it, or to like the movie if they did see it. According to Rotten Tomatoes, only 16 of the film’s reviews were positive (our own Chris Bumbray gave it a 2/10 review), and according to Box Office Mojo it made just 15.6 million dollars worldwide. Years down the line, the Peacock streaming service attempted to bring Vampire Academy to screens in the form of a TV series… and now Deadline reports that the Vampire Academy show has been cancelled after just one season.

One Of Us Is Lying ran for two seasons, while Vampire Academy, which comes from Julie Plec, has ended after one.
Deadline understands that execs at Peacock were happy with both shows creatively but they just didn’t find the requisite audience to justify further seasons.
One Of Us Is Lying, which is based on Karen M. McManus’ novel, launched in October 2021 and was the first Peacock pilot to go to series. It was renewed for a second season earlier this year that aired in October 2022.
Vampire Academy was handed a straight-to-series order in May 2021 and premiered in September 2022.
Both shows come from Universal Studio Group.

The TV world is filled with many successes and many duds.
That especially rings true for the Science Fiction/Fantasy genres, as they are very easy to mess up.
Luckily, 2022 brought us a lot of high-quality entertainment under the umbrella!
From HBO to Netflix, there were a bunch of different Networks that aired these high-quality series.
Check out what made our list below!
House of the Dragon (HBO)
The first Game of Thrones spin-off to see the light of day started slow, but our patience was rewarded in the second half of the season.
A deep-dive into the downfall of House Targaryen made for a more focused narrative than the original series.
The casting was on point, and we don't think any other show comes close to it in terms of production values.
The second season should be even better now that the Dance of the Dragons is underway.

While viewers love seeing Elena and Damon fall for each other, there's something special about the first love story on the show. Fans of the ever-popular The Vampire Diaries have found new material to obsess over in the form of the newly released Vampire Academy, adapted by Tvd creators Julie Plec and Marguerite MacIntyre. Still, the original vampire show remains a fan favorite, and the dynamic characters are one big reason why.
Besides vampires and witches, the show also introduced the vampires' eternal foes, werewolves, and Tyler was the flag-bearer of that supernatural group. While he was always a part of the Mystic Falls gang, he was a bit of an outlier too. He had his own character arc on the show, which his dialogue summed up well throughout the series.

Fans of The Vampire Diaries have been dipping their toes into Vampire Academy (run by Tvd showrunners Julie Plec and Marguerite MacIntyre) and finding some bloody fun in the new series. Tvd still remains a hugely popular television show, but it did afford all of its main characters a lot of plot armor through eight seasons.
The younger Salvatore brother was a character who was granted plenty of respite from life-threatening consequences, and there were times he should have definitely died in the show. His status as one of the main characters was the only thing that kept him alive.
Defeated Elijah
Stefan's final death in The Vampire Diaries was heartbreaking, but it should have happened much earlier when he and Damon took on Elijah by themselves. Rescuing Elena gave them a solid motive but did not explain how two vampires under two centuries old could take on an Original.

Peacock's Vampire Academy is an adaptation of Richelle Mead's popular fantasy YA saga. Previously adapted into a movie by Mean Girls director Mark Waters, showrunners Julie Plec and Marguerite MacIntyre have taken Mead's first novel and adapted it into a sexy, soapy series that takes vampire mythology to the next level. Plec, the former creator of The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, and Legacies, brings her affinity for teen dramas and bloodsuckers to Peacock with the show. The story follows Princess Lissa Dragomir as she survives a family tragedy and finds herself taking her brother's place as the heir to the throne. She struggles to conform to the expectations brought down upon her by the royal family but finds solace in a new friendship with Christian Ozera, a royal outcast. Her best friend, Rose Hathaway, fights an uphill battle as she tries to reinstate her position at St. Vladimir's Academy...

Fans of The Vampire Diaries have a lot to be excited about with new show Vampire Academy, as it is co-developed by Julie Plec, who co-created Tvd, and Marguerite MacIntyre, who played Elizabeth Forbes. Along with devouring new episodes of Vampire Academy, many fans are going back and rewatching Tvd. And even though Stelena and Delena were the main ships in the vampire drama, there were many diehards who were convinced that Bonnie and Damon were the real soulmates on the show.
The two bonded when they found that they were trapped in a 1994 prison world with no way out, but their relationship was kept strictly platonic on the show, unlike the books. These quotes make it crystal clear that Damon actually belonged with the powerful Bennett witch.

In fairness, Mia did not intentionally help the strigoi attack. She merely got kidnapped, and was used as a bargaining chip for the strigoi to free her recently-turned sister Sonya. This, of course, comes immediately after Mia finds out that her own father allowed Sonya to use her spirit powers to heal him multiple times, eventually leading the darkness to consume her, resulting in her turning strigoi. At this point, Julie Plec is pretty synonymous with vampires on television. From “The Vampire Diaries,” to now showrunning Peacock’s “Vampire Academy,” she’s got a bit of a lock on this particular sub-genre of fantasy — but that was never the intent.
“I just, I really believe in working for a living. And I really believe in, you know, earning my keep and I really believe in and maximizing my own potential,” Plec told TheWrap earlier this year. “And so it turned out to be quite a lot of television, without me even really meaning to. I just wanted to, you know, I wanted to say ‘Hey, listen, I appreciate those of you who keep hiring me to do this job. And I really want to prove myself to you and to the audience again and again.’ So it’s a strange birth of an ambition. I didn’t...

From showrunners Julie Plec and Marguerite MacIntyre and based on the best-selling book series by author Richelle Mead, the Peacock original series Vampire Academy is set in a world with powerful Royals, half-vampire Guardians, and savage Strigoi, who threaten to tear it all apart. At the center of it all, two young women – Lissa Dragomir (Daniela Nieves), a Royal vampire who yearns for a more normal life than her privilege will allow, and Rose Hathaway (Sisi Stringer), her Dhampir best friend training to be her Guardian – push back on the expectations and responsibilities placed on them without fully realizing the extent of the danger that puts them in.

Welcome back to the coolest supernatural school. Fifteen years after the first book in Richelle Mead's beloved series was released, the Vampire Academy TV series finally premiered Sept. 15 on Peacock. Created by The Vampire Diaries and Legacies' Julie Plec and Marguerite MacIntyre, the teen drama follows two girls—one a Royal vampire and the other her half-vamp protector—as they navigate friendships, romances and typical teen problems at St. Vladimir's Academy. Of course, they also have to deal with a deadly threat to vampire society. While Vampire Academy received a movie treatment in 2014 that massively changed elements of Mead's story, fans can expect the new series...

(Spoilers ahead for the series premiere of Vampire Academy on Peacock.) The series premiere of Peacock's Vampire Academy threw book fans for a loop, and that's exactly what co-creators Julie Plec and Marguerite MacIntyre intended. As revealed in the episode's dramatic opening sequence—which showed the deaths of several of the Dragomir family in a car crash—the show is set before the events of author Richelle Mead's book series of the same name. And as a fan of the books herself, Plec was excited to flesh out more of the Vampire Academy universe. An adaptation of Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy novels is heading to streaming TV. Here’s how you can enroll with the Peacock service to catch all the supernatural (and romantic) action.
Hailing from from executive producers Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries, The Originals) and Marguerite MacIntyre (The Originals), Vampire Academy promises a story of friendship, romance and danger. In a world of privilege and glamour, the friendship between two young women — Rosemarie “Rose” Hathaway and Vasilisa “Lissa” Dragomir (played by Sisi Stringe and Daniela Nieves) — transcends their strikingly different classes as they prepare to complete their education and enter vampire society.

To (extremely) paraphrase Benjamin Franklin: nothing is certain in storytelling but love, death, and vampires combining the two. In the last 30 years, give or take a “True Blood,” some of TV’s most popular interpretations of one of the world’s eldest mythic creatures have tended to lean toward the teenaged variety, whether plucky and battle-scarred (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) or moody and yearning (“The Vampire Diaries”). Now, Peacock’s “Vampire Academy,” from “Vampire Diaries” co-creator Julie Plec and “The Originals” producer Marguerite MacIntyre, combines all the above into one package that ends up intriguing enough, if also unavoidably cheesy in its attempts to stand out amongst the fray.
With the help of a somber, blunt opening explanation, the series immediately throws us into a centuries-old society of three co-existing vampire species: the magic “Moroi” aristocrats, the half-Moroi, half-human “Dhampir” tasked with protecting them, and the feral “Strogoi,” more zombie than vampire,...

The Vampire Diaries franchise may be over, but the show’s creator, Julie Plec, isn’t done with creatures of the night. Plec paired with Marguerite MacIntyre, who played Sheriff Forbes in Tvd, to adapt the Vampire Academy novels for the small screen. The fruits of their labor premieres September 15 in Peacock‘s Vampire Academy, starring Daniela Nieves and Sisi Stringer as Lissa Dragomir and Rose Hathaway, two supernatural best friends destined to shake their royal vampire society to its core. But don’t let Plec and MacIntyre’s resumes fool you: this series won’t look like Tvd franchise. That’s mostly because Richelle Mead’s books created a vampire world quite different from others in the genre. Vampire Academy has significant elements typically unseen in these bloodsucking tales. For example, Nieves and Stringer’s Lissa and Rose have a sisterly bond. Lissa is a royal Moroi vampire, who...

Each of the first four episodes of Vampire Academy, the new YA series from creators Julie Plec and Marguerite MacIntyre, opens with a quick sequence outlining the three principal roles that characters occupy. The first are the Moroi, vampires who have magical Elemental powers, but are basically powerless to defend themselves. Then there’s the Strigoi, who are Moroi that have turned evil and adhere to characteristics that audiences traditionally associate with vampires such as bloodlust and aggression. Finally, there are Dhampir guardians – half Moroi/half Dhampir who have sworn to protect the Moroi from the Strigoi.
If that primer is confusing, Vampire Academy only gets more convoluted from here. The 10-episode Peacock adaptation of Richelle Mead’s bestselling fantasy romance series is overstuffed, overcomplicated and often nonsensical, especially in its first half.

Fifteen years ago, myself and a whole legion of teenage readers were introduced to Richelle Meade’s world of moroi, dhampirs, strigoi, political intrigue, and romance in the six-book Vampire Academy series—and I never forgot just how incredible that world was. Vampire Academy was a series that captured my imagination and haunted my dreams, but even in those wildest dreams, I never could have imagined getting to screen the first eight episodes of a series that strikes right at the heart of what makes Meade’s world so compelling. Of course, it took someone like Julie Plec and her fellow Vampire Diaries alum, Marguerite MacIntyre, to create a series that has me wanting to climb onto the highest rooftop at St. Vladimir's to shout about how incredible it is.

Vampires have been big money since Twilight changed the dynamic of the bloodsucking monster from aristocratic old European men into hunky guys with great hair and sexy women with…great hair.
