‘Dream Big: Engineering Our World’: Film Review
Greg MacGillivray
Dream Big, an Imax tribute to feats of engineering across the ages — ancient, contemporary, hypothetical — offers its fair share of visceral 3D thrills. There’s the rush of time-lapse swoops down paved thoroughfares, gasp-inducing glimpses of Earth from a space capsule, and aerial views of skylines and bridges. But the film begins on more modest turf, among kids at play — building, creating, pretending.

As with many other Imax features directed by Greg MacGillivray, but more explicitly so, kids are the primary audience for Dream Big. With its focus on problem-solving, teamwork and the power of the imagination, it’s certain...

Film Review: Earth Day Honored With IMAX Film ‘To the Arctic 3D’
Chicago – A second major Earth Day film has emerged from the weekend, along with Disney Studio’s “Chimpanzee.” The documentary “To the Arctic 3D,” narrated by Meryl Streep, is a cautionary and virtuous look at life on the ice caps at the top of the world. The IMAX film has a spectacular vision, showing a planet’s necessary ecosystem in a troubling meltdown state.

Rating: 4.0/5.0

The doc is paired with a soundtrack by Paul McCartney, and has such phantasmagoric imagery it’s possible the brain can slip into Yellow Submarine mode. The whole thing works because it is stark and bold in its assertion that greenhouse gasses are ruining a part of the world that keeps every other living thing on the rest of the planet in balance. With supporting roles by the lifeforms that inhabit this part of the world, it is undeniable proof that this situation will keep...

"To The Arctic"

Narrated by Meryl Streep

Directed by Greg MacGillivray

Monday, February 27, 2012, must have been a very interesting day for Meryl Streep. It was the day after she won her third Academy Award (Best Actress for "The Iron Lady"), and after what must have been a very long night filled with excitement, lots of hugs and a never-ending succession of parties, she still found the time and the focus to wake up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed to record her sensitive and articulate narration for "To The Arctic" - the beautiful, ...

To the Arctic 3D

Directed by: Greg MacGillivray

Cast: (Voice of) Meryl Streep

Running Time: 45 mins

Rating: G

Release Date: April 20, 2012 (Chicago)

Plot: An IMAX documentary that follows around a mother polar bear and her two cubs as they try to survive in our current global warming situation.

Who’S It For? To the Arctic offers entertainment suitable for young families, along with anyone that can appreciate dedicated cinematography when they see it.

Overall

Primarily motivated by its passion for capturing soaring exterior shots of massive glaciers, or up close and personal shots of polar bears, To the Arctic succeeds at reminding you why you’ll probably regret not seeing such a landscape with your own eyes. On the other hand, its immersive 3D and huge IMAX presentation makes for a solid alternative to experiencing deadly frost, and campground invasions by rude wildlife.

Though it features a family-friendly polar bear...

Review: Take a Journey To The Arctic in IMAX-shot Polar Bear Film
If you look at the past credits of nature film director Greg MacGillivray, you'll see oodles of super pretty documentaries, often with epic shots filmed from 'copters buzzing a particular landscape. Of late, he's crafted a number of those IMAX films that get shown to school kids at your local science center. One of the weird secrets of modern business of cinema is that these relatively short IMAX docs (an platter lasts about 45 minutes) make a relative fortune, playing many times a day to often full crowds of bussed-in viewers. In a time where people watch epic films on their phones and most theatres convert to digital projection, there's something downright comforting in having images from a giant spool of celuloid illuminated by a...

Greg MacGillivray
As the video above shows, few things could be cuter than a polar bear doing a headstand.

But sadly, natural pleasures like polar bear antics are in jeopardy of disappearing forever. This clip is a teaser for the nature documentary "To The Arctic," the debut film from the One World One Ocean campaign, and the first IMAX 3D film from the award-winning producer Greg Macgillivray and his director son Shaun.

"To The Arctic" follows a mother polar bear and her two seven month-old cubs for five consecutive days. Narrated by Meryl Streep and featuring music from Paul McCartney, the film documents the trials and tribulations of polar bear survival in a climate impacted by global warming.

“It’s really a story about hope and survival, and the fact that we all who watch this can make a difference to the polar bear family and their life,” director Shaun Macgillivray said...

‘To the Arctic 3D’ Trailer – Meryl Streep Narrates Polar Life
If you’ve ever seen any trailer for any nature documentary, then you already know what to expect from To the Arctic 3D‘s preview: swooping shots of landscapes, animals doing funny and cute things, a celebrity voiceover, and some incongruous song covering the whole thing with a certain everyday sheen.

This isn’t to say that those shots of nature aren’t stunning — I’m willing to bet even more so in well-converted IMAX 3D — or that Meryl Streep‘s soft voice doesn’t feel like a great choice for this kind of project; to be perfectly honest, I think I’d like to see this when it hits theaters, with the right format provided. It’s just a case of “been there, done that” when we get down to the marketing side of things.

Watch the trailer below:

Synopsis: An extraordinary journey to the top of the world,...

To The Arctic Trailer Gives Us A Stunning Look At The Top Of The World
If the trailer for To The Arctic 3D is any indication, this documentary is going to be a truly stunning 3D and IMAX experience. Directed by Greg MacGillivray and narrated by Meryl Streep, To The Arctic follows a mother polar bear as she cares for her twin seven-month-old cubs. The trailer below, which you can view in HD at iTunes gives us a sample of the amazing footage captured for the documentary, including numerous under-water shots of the bears and other wildlife. It seems likely that animal and nature enthusiasts - especially those who loved the 2005 documentary March of the Penguins - will want to try to catch To The Arctic. And from what we see in the trailer, the film is likely to look exquisite on an IMAX screen and in 3D. There really isn.t a single frame in the video above that doesn.t give us something...

Telluride Festival Primary Lineup Announced: New Films From David Cronenberg, Werner Herzog and more
The Telluride Film Festival, a presentation of the National Film Preserve which takes place beginning tomorrow, Friday Sept 2 and runs through Monday Sept 5, has announced the first list of films set to screen during the five day run. One of the reasons that Telluride is so special is because the festival doesn’t announce the lineup until the day before the festival begins, so attendees have to commit to the fest without knowing what they will see. However the festival has a reputation for screening an incredible line up each and every single year, sometimes beating the Toronto International Film Festival to some of the big North American premieres. This year is no exception. The first list of films announced includes David Cronenberg‘s A Dangerous Method, The Turrin horse by Sos face Bela Tarr, The Artist, Into The Abyss, Steve McQueen ‘s Shame and the Dardenne Brothers‘ The Kid With a Bike.

Telluride Festival Primary Lineup Announced: New Cronenberg, Payne, Herzog Films Playing
David Cronenberg
The Telluride Film Festival [1], a presentation of the National Film Preserve which takes place beginning tomorrow, Friday Sept 2 and runs through Monday Sept 5, is an unusual beast as far as film festivals go. The core film lineup is not announced until the day before the festival begins, so attendees have to commit to the fest without knowing any of the movies that will definitely play. Now the first list of films is out, and it has some expected inclusions such as David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method (trailer [2]) and the Cannes fave The Artist (trailer [3]). In addition there are some good surprises, such as Steve McQueen and Michael Fassbender's reunion, Shame (pics [4]), and the Dardenne Brothers' The Kid With a Bike. More films will be announced at the last minute over the next couple days. One addition, for example, according to Kris Tapley, is Butter. Peter is arriving in...
