Steven Spielberg Shot E.T. In A Highly Unconventional Way That Made The Movie Better
Image
Most people know how the sausage is made. Feature films rarely shoot scene in the order in which they appear on-screen. Filmmakers typically have to arrange shooting schedules based on what sets or locations may be available, shooting scenes at hard-to-reach places all at once. Just as often, certain actors may only be available on particular weeks, so their schedules have to be accommodated. Then, of course, it's just efficient to film five, six, or even seven scenes on one set, allowing for minor changes in camera setups and/or lighting. An actor may film their death scene on one day and then their introductory scenes later. A movie is then assembled through the magic of editing. Most cineastes learn how filmmaking works early in their journey through the medium.

Some filmmakers, however, like to shoot their movies chronologically. That is, they like going through the script page by page...

'I Didn't Have A Lot Of Rights:' Steven Spielberg Reflects On Successfully Stopping E.T. Sequel
Image
When E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial hit theaters in 1982, the movie was an instant hit. But when the studio floated the idea of a follow-up, director Steven Spielberg put a stop to it.

Spielberg recalled stopping a potential E.T. sequel while discussing the movie with Drew Barrymore during the TCM Classic Film Festival: New York Pop-Up x 92Ny event. "That was a real hard-fought victory because I didn't have any rights," the director said via The Hollywood Reporter. "Before E.T., I had some rights, but I didn't have a lot of rights. I kind of didn't have what we call 'the freeze,' where you can stop the studio from making a sequel because you control the freeze on sequels, remakes and other ancillary uses of the IP. I didn't have that. I got it after E.T. because of its success."

Steven Spielberg Recalls “Hard-Fought Victory” to Stop ‘E.T.’ Sequel: “I Didn’t Have Any Rights”
Image
Steven Spielberg says that his efforts to prevent a sequel to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial influenced his decision to secure “freeze” rights on his future projects.

The Oscar-winning director recalled stopping a follow-up to his beloved 1982 film, saying he has “no intention” of ever making a sequel, while discussing the movie with star Drew Barrymore on Saturday night as part of the TCM Classic Film Festival: New York Pop-Up x 92Ny event.

“That was a real hard-fought victory because I didn’t have any rights. Before E.T., I had some rights, but I didn’t have a lot of rights,” he told the crowd. “I kind of didn’t have what we call ‘the freeze,’ where you can stop the studio from making a sequel because you control the freeze on sequels, remakes and other ancillary uses of the IP. Who Plays Ponyboy Curtis In The Outsiders?
Image
Francis Ford Coppola is responsible for half a century of onscreen leading men. The greatest Hollywood actors of the later 20th century, from Al Pacino to Robert De Niro to Robert Duvall? They also got their big break in one of the first two "Godfather" films. That's not to say these actors wouldn't have been stars without Coppola's movies (none of them are exactly one-hit wonders), but the New Hollywood truly put several artists in the right place at the right time to produce classic films.

In 1983, Coppola did it again with "The Outsiders," adapting S.E. Hinton's 1967 coming-of-age novel about several low-class teenage "Greasers" in 1960s Oklahoma. The main ensemble was played by several then up-and-comers, now-stars: Ralph Macchio as the sensitive Johnny Cade, Matt Dillon as wannabe tough guy Dallas "Dally" Winston, and Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze as brothers Sodapop and Darrel "Darry" Curtis. Diane Lane also appears as Cherry,...

Henry Thomas and Pat Welsh in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
Fact: E.T. is a Halloween movie. Make no mistake about that. So, consider this episode a timely treat.

At last month’s Creep I.E. Aftermath in Ontario, California, Halloweenies executive producer Michael Roffman and Scare You to Sleep creator Shelby Scott presided over an E.T. reunion panel featuring stars Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, Robert MacNaughton, C. 15 Amazing Movies That Kathleen Kennedy Produced (That Aren't Star Wars)
Image
For over 40 years, producer Kathleen Kennedy has been at the forefront of some of Hollywoods most successful movies. As a long-time collaborator with director Steven Spielberg, Kennedy has been an essential addition to his work and has played a central role as producer of everything from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial right up to more recent releases like Lincoln. With an incredible talent for producing absolute megahits at the box office, Kennedy has earned her status as a Hollywood legend.

While many will associate Kennedy with her involvement in some of the best movies ever, as she executive produced series like Back to the Future and even the Best Picture-winner Schindlers List, shes also been a main producer on countless other acclaimed classics. With perhaps the most impressive resume in all of Hollywood, Kathleens role as President of LucasFilm saw her oversee all Star Wars-related releases since 2012, but this's only the...

Steven Spielberg's Best Movie Has A Near-Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Steven Spielberg's 1983 sci-fi family film "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" should have a colon in the title. I know it looks punctuationally "busy," but "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial" simply feels more correct to my typist's fingers.

Despite this misstep, "E.T." remains one of the most beloved feature films of the 1980s, and it was so popular that it spawned an entirely new ethos in entertainment. Recall that divorce rates skyrocketed in the late '70s and early '80s, and many kids movies began reflecting the change by depicting lonely kids being raised by single parents. While unsupervised, the kids would then find supernatural, extraterrestrial, or otherwise extraordinary adventures just outside their doors. "E.T." pointed out that kids, when left to their own devices, will discover amazing things ... and use their moral wherewithal to take care of them themselves. The kids, "E.T." declared, are going to be alright.

Steven Spielberg Regrets Editing Guns Out Of ‘E.T.’: “That Was A Mistake”
Image
Steven Spielberg is admitting that he made a mistake when he edited guns out of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

Speaking at Time’s 100 Summit, the director explained why he made the changes in the first place and why he now regrets it.

“That was a mistake. I never should have done that,” Spielberg said about editing guns out of the science fiction film. “E.T. is a product of its era. No film should be revised based on the lenses we now are, either voluntarily, or being forced to peer through.”

He continued, “E.T. was a film that I was sensitive to the fact that the federal agents were approaching kids with firearms exposed and I thought I would change the guns into walkie-talkies… Years went by and I changed my own views. I should have never messed with the archives of my own work, and I don’t recommend anyone do that.

As A Child, Drew Barrymore Thought E.T. Was Real, And Steven Spielberg Kept It That Way
Image
Few directors thrive at working with children quite like Steven Spielberg. From "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" and "Empire of the Sun" to "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" and "The Bfg," that Spielberg lad's films are littered with great performances from kid actors. In the cases of "E.T." and "Empire of the Sun," a number of those same youths would grow up to become celebrated adult thespians in their own right.

So it was with Drew Barrymore, who came to fame playing Elliott's (Henry Thomas) excitable younger sister Gertie in "E.T." Part of what makes Spielberg's classic 1982 sci-fi film so moving is the way Barrymore and those around her convince you that E.T. is himself a living, breathing visitor from another planet. It's not just the cast's looks of awe, shock, and wonder (i.e. "The Spielberg Face") that gives their interactions with him their emotional power. You also believe he's just as...

E.T.'s Costume Designer Had A Personal Connection To Two Specific Costumes
Image
Nothing brings you back in time quicker than revisiting a childhood favorite through the context of adult eyes. I got to experience that feeling not too long ago with the IMAX re-release of "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" because, as of this year, Steven Spielberg's classic celebrates its 40th anniversary.

When a film is inducted into the canon of great movies, it can sometimes be easy to forget how much they affected you initially. But seeing how Spielberg's soft direction, coupled with John Williams' magnificently emotional score, came together on the biggest screen imaginable brought me back to being eight years old again.

But while Spielberg and Williams are the behind the scenes folks with the most influence over the film's legacy, costume designer Deborah Lynn Scott is just as important. "E.T." is not an extravagantly costumed film, but if you were also terrified of the scientists stumbling into the Taylor...

40 Years Later, This Exclusive E.T. Featurette Examines Spielberg's Inner Child
Image
Is it a reach to call "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" one of the best family movies ever made? Probably not, as its mixture of deep themes and childlike wonder makes a great watch for everyone, regardless of age. To say that this was intentional would be an understatement -- director Steven Spielberg has been quite open over the years about how the film helped him process his parents' seemingly sudden divorce, an event dramatized in his upcoming film "The Fabelmans." It is obvious when watching "E.T." that it was meant to help showcase the complex emotions surrounding divorce to people of all ages, especially children.

That obviously didn't mean that Spielberg and his cast and crew couldn't have fun on the set, which is the focus of a new featurette premiering exclusively here on /Film. To celebrate the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray re-release of the classic film, Universal Pictures...

How E.T. Became More Than A Movie For Director Steven Spielberg
Image
Steven Spielberg has a lot to be proud of as a filmmaker. It's impressive for a director to create one film that becomes a classic or generation-defining film, and Spielberg has created several. "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," the "Indiana Jones" franchise, "Jaws" -- the man is unstoppable. His innate ability to tap into childhood wonder has produced some of the best kid's films ever, including 1982's "E.T. the Extraterrestrial."

While Spielberg is known for these iconic films, he didn't start out making kid's movies, but they all involved an adult character with a childlike spirit. His amazing ability to reduce grown-ups to big kids with wide, dream-filled eyes has served him well for decades, and produced a staggering amount of blockbusters -- so many that it might be difficult for his fans to pick a favorite. But it's an easy choice for the filmmaker.

Et the Extra-Terrestrial at 40: Spielberg’s sci-fi smash remains a wonder
Henry Thomas
The director’s lauded 1982 hit is about childhood empathy – four decades later, it’s still one of his most complete experiences

There’s a crucial domestic scene early in Et the Extra-Terrestrial where 10-year-old Elliott (Henry Thomas) is trying desperately to convince his mother (Dee Wallace), his older brother Michael (Robert MacNaughton) and his little sister Gertie (Drew Barrymore) that he’s found an alien in the back yard of their suburban home. Nobody believes him. So he lashes out, like many children would in that situation. He claims his absent father would have believed him. And he tells his harried mother, who’s still raw from the divorce, that his dad and a woman named Sally are vacationing in Mexico. It hurts her feelings.

Michael snaps at Elliott. “Why don’t you grow up? Think about other people for a change.”...

Steven Spielberg at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
E.T.: The Kids Movie That Is Really About Divorce
Steven Spielberg at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
The scene is familiar to every child of the ‘80s. Little 10-year-old Elliott and his older brother Michae —still learning how to drive a car—have stolen a van in order to help their newfound alien friend E.T. After rescuing him from the clutches of a team of government agents intent on studying the creature, they rendezvous with Michael’s buddies at a local park. Elliott explains to them that E.T. is a man from outer space and that they’re taking him, via their bicycles, to his spaceship.

“Well, can’t he just…beam up?” asks one of the boys. “This is Reality, Greg,” Elliott responds.

The line always gets a laugh from audiences. But it’s an apt one. For “reality” is exactly what distinguishes Steven Spielberg’s 1982 masterpiece E.T. the Extra Terrestrial from most every other science-fiction blockbuster, particularly those marketed toward kids. At its...

Henry Thomas on Life After 'E.T.' — "It's Hard When You're Remembered for an Iconic Role" (Exclusive)
Childhood star Henry Thomas has come full circle. When he wasn't becoming famous as Elliott in the 1982 classic E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and other films, he grew up quietly on a farm in South Texas. Nearly four decades later, he moved to a farm of his own, this time in Oregon with his third wife, Anna, 46, and three kids: Hazel, 14, Evelyn, 9, and Henry III, 8. "That was always my goal. We have horses, and apples, and horse apples," Henry, 46, exclusively tells Closer Weekly, laughing. He's also achieved adult success with films like Legends of the Fall. "It's hard when you’re remembered for an iconic role," he says. "But I’m in an industry where in order to get a job, I have to go into a room and get either rejected or accepted. If you have a thin skin, you just won’t last very long." Henry in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

Henry Thomas and Pat Welsh in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
E.T. Almost Had a Very Different Ending
Henry Thomas and Pat Welsh in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
Steven Spielberg has directed many memorable movies during his long career, but E.T. The Extra Terrestrial remains one of his most iconic. To this day, it's one of his best-reviewed movies, currently holding a 98 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One of the most iconic moments from the classic 80s sci-fi family flick, of which there are many, is the ending, which is just about as perfect as it gets. But according to star Robert MacNaughton, the ending was almost quite a bit different.

The actor, who plays Elliot's older brother in the movie, recently spoke with Yahoo in honor of E.T. celebrating its 30th anniversary. While speaking about the ending, Robert MacNaughton revealed that the original ending was quite a bit different than what ultimately made the cut. It was originally going to involve another Dungeons and Dragons game, as well as confirming that Elliot was still in contact with the movie's titular,...

The Original Ending To Steven Spielberg's E.T. Involved a Game of Dungeons & Dragons
Did you know that the ending we saw in Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra Terrestrial wasn't the original ending of the movie? There was another ending that was shot that ended up on the cutting room floor.

I remember hearing something about this years ago, but thanks to an interview with Robert MacNaughton, who played Elliot's brother Michael, we have some new details on this scene. E.T. is turning 35 freakin' years old this year! Seeing this film is the earliest memory I have of going to the movies and it so cool and fun to learn new things about it all these years later.

While talking to Yahoo Movies about the film, MacNaughton explained that the original ending involved a game of Dungeons & Dragons:

"The last scene in the movie wasn't supposed to be the scene that ends up in the movie. The last scene was going to be...

E.T. Was Supposed To Have A Much Different Ending
"I'll be right here." E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial has one of the most emotional endings in Steven Spielberg's entire catalogue. And yet, this almost wasn't the ending of the movie, as original star Robert MacNaughton -- who played Elliott's big brother, Michael -- now confirms an...

Have Jurassic Dinosaurs Truly Kicked Marvel Superheroes Butt at Worldwide Box Office?
'Jurassic World' velociraptor kicks Iron Man ass at worldwide box office. 'Jurassic World' officially surpasses 'The Avengers' at worldwide box office Directed by Colin Trevorrow; starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Vincent D'Onofrio; and co-executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, Jurassic World has officially become the third biggest worldwide box office hit in history. The Jurassic Park sequel – or reboot, as it's basically the same story with a slightly different twist – has surpassed Marvel's Joss Whedon-directed all-star superhero flick The Avengers, which broke box office records back in 2012. Of course, "officially" just ain't what it used to be – like, in the days before The Fall. So you wisely ask, "But which movie has actually sold the most tickets?" After all, that's the true measure of a film's popularity. Well, that's a tough one to answer without the studios providing accurate, precise numbers. And that's not about to happen. It always...

Time Machine: Spielberg and Daughter (with 'Indiana Jones' Actress Capshaw) on Oscars Red Carpet
Steven Spielberg and daughter Destry Spielberg on the Oscars' Red Carpet Steven Spielberg and daughter Destry Steven Spielberg and daughter Destry Spielberg arrive at the 83rd Academy Awards, held on Feb. 27 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Spielberg has taken home two Best Director Oscars: Schindler's List (1993) and Saving Private Ryan (1998). Schindler's List also won Best Picture, but Saving Private Ryan lost to John Madden's Miramax-distributed Shakespeare in Love. There was quite a bit of animosity at the time, as some felt that Miramax, owned by brothers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, overdid its Oscar campaigning – while still managing to sway enough Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members to vote for its film. Somewhat ironically, at the 2011 Academy Awards ceremony Steven Spielberg presented the Best Picture Award to The King's Speech. Toplining Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, Geoffrey Rush, Guy Pearce, and Claire Bloom, this British production was...

Laugh Killer Laugh (2015)
'Laugh Killer Laugh' Clip Starring William Forsythe | Exclusive
Laugh Killer Laugh (2015)
Kamal Ahmed became famous playing one half of The Jerky Boys, a duo completed by Johnny Brennan who released a number of popular prank call records throughout the 90s. In 2000, Kamal Ahmed bailed on the still-ongoing outfit, instead focusing on his acting and filmmaking career. His latest directorial effort is Laugh Killer Laugh, which puts an oddly unique and hilarious spin on the gangster genre. And we have an exclusive clip spotlighting some of the film's humor.

In Laugh Killer Laugh, popular character actor William Forsythe makes a rare turn as a leading man. He plays a jewel thief named Frank Stone, who is very deeply disturbed. He has been described as an anti-social milquetoast who finds no joy or humor in anything. Not until he awakens from a deep coma with a changed personality. Against his better judgement, he decided to take this new persona to the stage, becoming,...

'Atari: Game Over' Trailer Goes Searching for Buried 'E.T.' Video Game
Henry Thomas and Pat Welsh in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
Back in April, we reported that filmmaker Zak Penn helped lead an expedition to the New Mexico desert to unearth hundreds of unsold E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial video game cartridges that were buried decades ago in a landfill. That journey is chronicled in the first trailer for the upcoming documentary Atari: Game Over.

Zak Penn directs this film that explores the meteoric rise of video game pioneer Atari, and their colossal failure that was the E.T. video game, which was rushed into production to be available for purchase by Christmas time, after spending a massive $21 million for the rights. The game is widely considered to be the worst of all time, selling just 1.5 million copies, leading to the urban legend that Atari literally buried 14 dump trucks of E.T. cartridges in an Alamogordo, New Mexico landfill in 1983, the remains of which were dug up just a few months ago. Take a look...

Roald Dahl and Ian Fleming previously collaborated on You Only Live Twice, but this feels closer to a true fusion: James Bond for juniors with a modern fairytale element. It's easy to unpick who did what: from Fleming's side you get a gadget-stuffed car, a heroine with an absurdly suggestive name (Sally Ann Howes' Truly Scrumptious), a Bond-style baddie (Gert "Goldfinger" Frobe) and a daring assault on his secret lair. It was also produced by Bond-merchant Cubby Broccoli, with sets by Ken Adam. And from Dahl's side you get empathetic children's plight (essential with two...

E.T.: The Extra-terrestrial 30th Anniversary Blu-ray Review
Steven Spielberg's' E.T.:The Extra-Terrestrial 30th Anniversary Blu-ray arrived on shelves on October 9, just in time to get the Halloween season off to a glorious start. This is the second Spielberg classic to get the Blu-ray special treatment, with Jaws recently being released as well. The movie stars Henry Thomas, Drew Barrymore, Peter Coyote, Dee Wallace, Robert MacNaughton and K.C. Martel. Watching this again, I was reminded of how special this film is. E.T. looks the best I have seen it in a long time on Blu-ray with it's beautifully restored filmic 1080p video transfer. The sound is equally impressive, with a DTS-hd Master Audio 7.1 This is enough of a reason to buy this film, but the added special features make this purchase a no-brainer.

Melissa Mathison wrote this wonderful screenplay that not only introduces audiences to a different side of Aliens, but also takes us inside of a broken family.
