Russell Crowe has already proven himself in the Colosseum in Ridley Scott's Gladiator. Now he's training a new fighter for the Mma octagon in the upcoming mixed martial arts action film Beast in Me. Mma movies have been rather hit-or-miss. Entries in the Never Back Down and Undisputed franchises (in so much as the latter can be called an Mma franchise) have received mixed reviews from audiences and critics, while Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton's Warrior is the undisputed pound-for-pound Goat of the sub-genre. But with the talent of Russell Crowe and the rest of its star-studded cast, Beast in Me has a solid shot at the title.
Thanks to Deadline, we have our first look at Crowe and Foundation star Daniel MacPherson in Beast in Me, along with the rest of the star-studded line-up. Alongside the pair, the movie also stars Luke Hemsworth, Mojean Aria, Kelly Gale,...

Despite initial mixed reviews, Land of Bad found fame on Netflix with a star-studded cast. The film's realism comes from real-life Jtac elements and consultant Jason Kinney's influence. The action-packed military thriller Land of Bad pays homage to '90s films with accurate details.
Despite its initial release in February 2024 and less than stellar reviews, William Eubank's Land of Bad found newfound fame when the film made its Netflix debut on July 18, 2024. The action thriller even managed to claim a spot on Netflix's Global Top 10 list during the week spanning July 22 to July 28. The film has a star-studded cast, with Liam Hemsworth and Russell Crowe taking on central roles. The actors are joined by Hemsworth's brother, Luke, alongside Milo Ventimiglia, Ricky Whittle, Chuka Ikogwe, and Daniel MacPherson.
Land of Bad, although another addition to the highly saturated genre of war/military action thrillers, is Eubank's first venture into a purely action-centered film.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Land of Bad.
Packet's negligence almost gets Kinney killed, highlighting the importance of discipline in war movies. Hashimi serves as a traditional villain in Land of Bad, challenging Kinney and adding tension to the story. Reaper's refusal to advance in rank showcases the consequences of leadership decisions, affecting the mission's success.
Liam Hemsworth's Land of Bad is in many ways a typical action movie, but it also deviates from the time-honored villain formula in one key way. Some of the best war movies of all time are renowned for their iconic bad guys, so there's no denying that a compelling antagonist can be vital within the genre. Land of Bad is quietly aware of this important factor for an effective war movie and has taken a creative approach to the trope that adds another layer to the story.

Land of Bad has had a disappointing box office debut, becoming one of star Russell Crowe's worst theatrical outings. The movie is projected to make a 4-day total of just $2.2 million over the President's Day holiday weekend. The movie tied with Lisa Frankenstein for No. 9 on the domestic chart, recouping just over 10% of its $18.5 million budget.
Land of Bad has turned out a remarkably poor box office performance for a Russell Crowe action movie. The project, which premiered in over 1,000 theaters, stars the Oscar-winning actor as "Reaper" Grimm, a drone pilot who has the challenging task of guiding Air Force Tacp officer "Playboy" Kinney (Liam Hemsworth) on an emergency extraction mission. The ensemble cast of the movie, which was directed and co-written by Underwater's William Eubank, also includes Luke Hemsworth, Ricky Whittle, and Milo Ventimiglia.

The upcoming action thriller Land of Bad features a star-studded cast including Russell Crowe, and there are some exciting details about the new film. The latest outing from genre auteur director William Eubank, Land of Bad follows an elite extraction team who must go behind enemy lines to rescue top-secret equipment and hostages. Promising to be a thrill-a-minute action extravaganza, Land of Bad features several notable names outside of Crowe including Liam Hemsworth and Milo Ventimiglia. Though the film features state-of-the-art military gadgets, Land of Bad is reminiscent of classic action films from the genre's heyday in the 1980s.

The movie follows tech billionaire and gambler Jake Foley (Crowe) as he invites his childhood friends to a surprisingly high-stakes game with the chance to win millions of dollars on the table. However, this is not the friendly game they are expecting. Jake reveals that this poker night is part of a plan to force his once-friends to reveal their secrets as he seeks revenge for their betrayals. With secrets being revealed and betrayals unmasked, the friends are forced together once more when a group of thieves breaks into Jake's home.

When you hear the phrase “poker face,” you might get a certain pop song stuck in your head, or you might conjure up an image of stoicism, unreadability — the kind of expression that helps a gambler take home the pot.
Russell Crowe is adept at such masculine impassiveness. Even when bellowing about revenge as Javert in “Les Misérables” or coming undone in “A Beautiful Mind,” he has a solidness to him. Unfortunately, while solidity can be beneficial — as in dependable, trusty — it can also be boring. Such is the downfall of “Poker Face,” a new feature written and directed by, and starring, Crowe.
Crowe’s first screenplay, from a story by Stephen M. Coates, follows Jake Foley (Crowe), an Aussie rogue who, along with his best friend Andrew (played by RZA), leveraged his teenage poker skills into the first online poker enterprise. As a result, Jake is insanely wealthy. After...

One of Russell Crowe’s greatest strengths as a movie star is his ability to make it look easy. When he’s at his best, it often looks like he’s barely trying. Whether it be heroic vengeance (Gladiator), bold leadership (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World), unhinged––ahem––madness (Unhinged), or anything in between, he appears incredibly comfortable. When Crowe is in the director’s chair, he seems to be trying a bit too hard. At least so far. Poker Face––marking his first screenplay credit and second directorial feature following The Water Diviner in 2015––is a lot of things at once.
Crowe plays Jake Foley, a billionaire who got rich after he developed tech for early online poker that then got repurposed for military use. A sepia-toned flashback leads into an extended shamanic drug trip that seems to clarify a few moral quandaries for Jake,...

The title “Poker Face” suggests a droll, methodical cunning that unfortunately proves elusive everywhere else in Russell Crowe’s sophomore effort as writer-director. As handsomely produced as his first, 2014’s historical drama “The Water Diviner,” it offers an even more overstuffed narrative whose myriad elements barely have time to register before we arrive at a nearly 10-minute end credits crawl. This Australia-shot mix of intrigue, soap opera, thriller and tearjerker never quite gels, despite enough surface gloss and cast expertise to hold attention. Screen Media is releasing theatrically to a couple dozen U.S. screens this week and to digital formats on Nov. 22, with other territories following.
A prologue finds our protagonists as teenage besties in what looks like the late 1970s: five rural Aussie lads already obsessed with poker. After a swim in an idyllic quarry, they’re challenged to a game by a local bully, who naturally is enraged by his loss.

“It’s famously unadaptable and unfathomable,” declares cinematographer Tico Poulakakis about the epic Apple TV+ epic space opera “Foundation.” For our recent webchat he adds, “It was a both terrifying and exciting to read. Both the fact that it was such a big thing and that it was both terrifying and exciting is what made me sign on,” he reveals. Watch our exclusive video interview above
“Foundation” is based on the series of short stories and novels by acclaimed author Isaac Asimov, and is created by David S. Goyer (“The Dark Knight”) and Josh Friedman (“Avatar 2”). After premiering on the streamer last fall, Apple was so confident about its future that it renewed the show for a second season before the first season concluded. The series stars Emmy nominees Lee Pace (“Pushing Daisies”) and Jared Harris (“Mad Men” and “Chernobyl”), alongside a huge ensemble cast including Lou Llobell, Leah Harvey,...

“I think sci-fi, for us, is a really good fit,” designer Kurt Swanson declares about the beauty of designing for science fiction, where artists working behind the scenes on the huge task of building the look and feel of a show can push the envelope as far as the story will take them. “We came from fashion before we started doing movies, but sci-fi and fantasy, those worlds, there’s really no rules. It’s really exciting for us when there’s no rules, to dive right in and look at each of these worlds and figure out what is this world built on, what are their resources, all of that kind of stuff is our springboard for designing something like this,” Swanson explains.
Swanson, who alongside collaborator Bart Mueller make up the design team of Kurt and Bart, are renowned for their elaborate and innovative style, which they have...

“Respect and enjoy the peace” is the creed repeated by devoted citizens of the interstellar empire at the center of epic sci-fi drama “Foundation.” But rather than respecting the status-quo, the Apple TV+ epic looks set to crash the upcoming industry guild awards honoring the best of TV in 2021.
In the run up to the Oscars in March next year, various industry guilds and societies will present their annual end-of-year awards for their respective crafts. Oscar pundits and studios will pore over each announcement looking for Oscar signs and portents. But the TV nominees announced by each guild over the next few weeks will also provide a glimpse into what we might expect at the Emmys next fall, and my money is on “Foundation” to assert itself as a force to be reckoned with.

Salvor’s (Leah Harvey) not making as clean a getaway as she’d like in the Foundation season finale — and TV Insider has an exclusive sneak peek of Hugo (Daniel MacPherson) stopping her as she’s getting ready to step on board a ship. “Figured I’d find you here,” he says from behind her, and she stops walking. “You wanted a clean getaway. I know you too well, Sal. I think it was the kiss on the cheek that did it.” As she explains, “I just didn’t want it to hurt any more than it had to.” But he’s learned, from his past, that “it’s not love if it doesn’t hurt.” So is his plan to chase after her, she asks, because “you know you can come if you want to.” The thing is, “I would if you really wanted me to,” he tells her,...

Strike Back‘s second — and final? — series finale airs tonight on Cinemax (10/9c). And with the idea that you can’t visit that many countries, train for that many fight scenes and blow that many buildings to smithereens without learning a thing or two… we thought we’d quiz the cast and showrunner about what they learned while shooting the action drama.
