Robert Eggers Reportedly Confirmed To Direct 'Labyrinth' Sequel
Image
Modern horror visionary, Robert Eggers is on a roll. Not only did Focus Features just announce Eggers' next project, Werwulf, but now a rumor about another exciting project for the Nosferatu director is gaining even more traction. While Focus Features might want to keep the star director to itself, it looks like it'll have to share pretty soon.

According to Deadline, Eggers has closed a deal with TriStar Pictures to write and direct a new Labyrinth story, a rumored sequel to the Jim Henson 1986 musical film featuring David Bowie in the role of a lifetime. Reportedly, Eggers is writing the script for the Labyrinth sequel with his The Northman and Werwulf partner, Sjón, while Chris and Eleanor Columbus will produce with Lisa Henson and executive producer Brian Henson, which makes for a confidence-boosting team behind the rumored project.

While the horror filmmaker hasn't confirmed the deal himself, he also hasn't denied the exciting rumors,...

Nosferatu Director Addresses Labyrinth Reboot Rumors After Announcing Next Film
Image
Robert Eggers is sticking with monster movies for his next project following the success of Nosferatu. After the news was announced, Eggers addressed why a Labyrinth movie won't be his next film as was recently rumored.

On Wednesday, it was announced that Eggers was teaming back up with Focus Features to direct Werwulf, a werewolf story. Meanwhile, he was also asked by ComicBook about the rumors that he was setting up a Labyrinth film. Eggers did not outright deny the rumors, nothing that he has a "ton of things in development." This might even suggest that there's some truth to the reports, but that the reboot is just one of multiple potential projects Eggers has his sights on. The director then clarified that, after Nosferatu, he wanted to tell an "original" story for his next film.

Robert Eggers Rumored to Be Taking on 'Labyrinth' Reboot/Sequel
Image
Robert Eggers’ incredible reimagining of Nosferatu has put him on the radar of many studios who want the mostly independent director to work with them on some big projects. A new one being touted by Hollywood rumormonger Jeff Sneider is that Eggers has already chosen a new project, taking on Sony’s long-gestating reboot of the classic Jim Henson fantasy, Labyrinth.

Let’s say from the off that this is only a rumor, and can be taken with a large pinch of salt and any other seasoning you care to throw at it. For one thing, Brian Henson – son of Muppet creator Jim, and one of Labyrinth’s original performers – claimed multiple times in the last year that the “very exciting” sequel/reboot of the cult classic fantasy was being worked on at the beginning of the year. Second, Eggers' run of successful movies, which include The Lighthouse and The Witch,...

Nosferatu Remake Director Reportedly Rebooting Beloved 38-Year-Old Fantasy Film
Image
Filmmaker Robert Eggers has found success with Nosferatu, his new film inspired by the classic vampire movie. According to a new report, he is now setting his sights on another celebrated film from the past to reboot.

According to movie scooper Jeff Sneider of The InSneider, Eggers has partnered up with Sony and The Jim Henson Company to reboot the 1986 film Labyrinth. In recent years, there have been rumblings about a new Labyrinth movie happening, though previous attempts always fizzled out in development hell. The reported addition of Eggers to the new Labyrinth project could be what gives the reboot the momentum it needs to finally get moving, given how many critics have been calling the new Nosferatu one of the best films of 2024.

10 Best Portrayals Of War Movie Villains, Ranked
Image
Providing their audience with an unflinching snapshot of the life-or-death nature of armed conflict, war movies have formed an intrinsic part of popular culture since the earliest days of cinema, to the point that storied names in the vein of Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, and The Deer Hunter are widely regarded as some of the best movies of all time. Furthermore, many of the best war films of all time owe much of their success to a superb villain who carries the story with their wicked presence, serving as the perfect antagonistic foil.

In many cases, the villain is the movie's best character, with the actor tasked with bringing them to life producing a nuanced and compelling performance that has the potential to overshadow the efforts of the film's protagonists. From morally devoid war criminals and renegade soldiers to Machiavellian double agents, the best portrayals of war movie villains...

10 Best Live-Action Childrens Fantasy Movies
Image
Children's live-action fantasy movies are some of the most popular within the genre among audiences of all ages. Just because a film is meant for kids doesn't mean it won't connect with adults or prove to be a classic in the decades to come. Darker themes and elements are a key part of any children's story, and many of these films are so highly rated and well remembered because they take kids and their opinions seriously. Incorporating scary moments and more mature themes within a safe story is a great way to connect with younger audiences and convey deeper messages.

Despite it being considered a more kid-friendly genre, there are plenty of animated movies that are pretty dark, demonstrating how versatile the medium is. Similarly, live-action can prove to be just as magical and immersive as animation, creating innovative sets and creatures with practical movie sets that aren't CGI. While...

Jennifer Connelly Shares View on Labyrinth's Popularity: 'We Don't Make Movies Like That Anymore'
Image
Jennifer Connelly fondly remembers her iconic role in Labyrinth due to the practical effects and craftsmanship of the movie. Jim Henson, considered a visionary, created a timeless sense of wonder in Labyrinth with unique puppets and sets. Jim Henson, who passed before Labyrinth's cult success, would have been thrilled by its impact on subsequent generations.

Labyrinth was Jennifer Connellys introduction to a long and highly-acclaimed career in Hollywood, and the actress still looks back on the movie with fondness. Directed by Jim Henson, featuring an array of weird and wonderful puppet creations and fantastical sets, and an iconic performance by David Bowie, the movie defied its initial lackluster release to become a cult classic and is about to earn a long-awaited sequel.

Star Wars has a vast universe beyond the movies, where minor characters get the chance to shine. Even background characters such as those included on this list have loyal fans. Unique designs like cyborg implants or newly-shaped helmets captivate viewers and make these characters memorable.

The Star Wars franchise is full of amazing characters, but for some viewers, it's the background characters who really grab their attention and interest. This expanded content lets a lot of background characters from the movies get their own time to shine.

Sometimes, however, even with these expanded materials, these characters are just beloved because of their simple and memorable appearances in the movies. Whether they're barely in one scene, or just lingering in a handful, all...

Brian Henson Says His Father Jim Henson ‘Would Be Thrilled’ About Labyrinth’s Popularity
Image
Jim Henson would be thrilled to see Labyrinth become a cult classic, despite its initial box office failure. Critics' dislike of the film led to its poor theatrical performance and subsequent removal from theaters. Labyrinth has gained popularity over the years and continues to attract new viewers, making it Jim Henson's most valuable and successful project.

Jim Henson passed away just four years after Labyrinth was released, never really getting to see the film gain a massive audience and solidify its spot as a cult classic. Best known for creating the Muppets and Fraggle Rock, Henson went on to helm 1982's The Dark Crystal and 1986's Labyrinth. While The Dark Crystal made a profit at the box office, Labyrinth banked $12.7 million, just a bit over its $25 million budget.

10 Great Fantasy Movies Not Based On Books
Image
Some of the best fantasy movies in cinema history were based on books, such as The Princess Bride and The NeverEnding Story. However, many great fantasy movies are original works or inspired by other media, like Labyrinth and Dragonheart. These movies offer creative and visually stunning experiences, with fantastic performances and intriguing storylines.

Fantasy is a genre typically associated with literature, whether it be dark adult novels, children's books, or otherwise, but not all stories in fantasy movies started life as books. Some of the best movies in fantasy cinema history are based on the written word. The Princess Bride, The NeverEnding Story, The Last Unicorn, and Bedknobs and Broomsticks are just some examples of fantasy adventures that were books before they were movies.

However, it's fair to say some of the very best fantasy movies are original works or otherwise inspired. They may even feel like they should've been books,...

Labyrinth is definitely getting its long-awaited sequel, but director Scott Derrickson has no idea when that will happen. A position that makes a lot of sense, considering the current crisis that the film industry is going through. The 1986 fantasy classic starring David Bowie has become one of the greatest exponents of the genre, and a movie that has left a mark in the history of cinema. Therefore, now that Hollywood has been constantly releasing new versions or sequels of several old productions, it is not a surprise that Labyrinth will soon be part of that list.

Jim Henson's Labyrinth is back on the big screen in September. In honor of the cult classic movie's 35th anniversary this year, Fathom Events will bring Labyrinth back to theaters for three nights only on Sept. 12, 13, and 15. In addition to honoring the movie's 35th anniversary, the screening of Labyrinth also serves to celebrate Jim Henson, whose 85th birthday would be on Sept. 24 if we hadn't lost him in 1990.

Tri-Star has brought on Don't Breathe director Fede Alvarez to direct their Labyrinth sequel, while also setting writer Jay Basu (Monsters: Dark Continent) to write the script. This project will not head into production right away though, with both the director and writer first tackling Sony's The Girl in the Spider's Web movie, which begins filming this fall. Labyrinth 2 is moving forward after that project. This new report also re-confirms that this project is not a Labyrinth reboot.

Back in January 2016, it was reported that Guardians of the Galaxy writer Nicole Perlman has come aboard to write the script for a Labyrinth reboot, which was particularly troubling to many fans since the news came just days after original Labyrinth star David Bowie passed away. Nicole Perlman then took to social media to reveal that she had actually been in talks with the Jim Henson company in late 2014, confirming that she isn't rebooting the original movie,...

Last week, we reported that Tri-Star and The Jim Henson Company are moving forward with a reboot of the 1986 cult classic Labyrinth. The studios brought on Guardians of the Galaxy writer Nicole Perlman to write the script, although no story details were given at that time. Over the weekend, the screenwriter took to her Twitter page to clear the air on this new version of Labyrinth, which she says is not a reboot, but rather a "continuation." Take a look at her statement below.

"Not 'rebooting' anything, guys. Henson Co & I started talking in late 2014, so the timing of these rumors is so upsetting. I would never seek to profit from Bowie's death. Labyrinth is my favorite film from childhood, so I share your concerns that any continuation of the world be handled with love and respect."

The news of this new project came just days after the death of original Labyrinth star David Bowie.

However, a new story from Entertainment Weekly released shortly after that first news claims that the Labyrinth sequel is not actually in active development.

Christopher Malcolm obituary
Actor and producer who played Brad Majors in the original Rocky Horror Show in 1973 and Saffy's gay dad in Ab Fab

Christopher Malcolm, who has died of cancer aged 67, played Brad Majors in the original production of The Rocky Horror Show in 1973 and, as his life as an actor started to overlap with an interest in producing the shows themselves, he became, after co-producing the West End revival of Rocky Horror in 1990, the executive in charge of all subsequent worldwide productions.

His death came just a few days after his latest project, the revival of Oh What a Lovely War at Stratford East, opened to enthusiastic notices, probably sealing a West End transfer. The way the show turned out was a good example of the kind of creative partnerships he enjoyed and nurtured throughout his career. For more than 30 years, he worked as an "insider" producing link between such London...

Meme: “Teen Wolf” Most Shippable Show Ever, Uganda Wants To Ban Bail for Homosexuality and Rapists, Michelle Rodriguez Did Not Confirm Her Relationship
First look at Warehouse 13, Scott Lively defends Ugandan law, the bunny apocalypse Buffy warned us about

Teen Wolf might just be the most shippable show on television. Possibly in television history. Sure, we all know about Sterek, Sciassic, and Stydia, but when I read this Buzzfeed list of all the ships there were some– like Kerek– that I’d never considered.

As Ugandan President Museveni prepares to sign the anti-homosexuality bill into law, he’s now pushing for a constitutional amendment that would ban bail for rapists and homosexuals. He’s also recently said that he’s willing to keep Uganda poor by giving up international aid to criminalize homosexuality.

VH1 is launching a show called Naked Dating, which will have one man and one woman who will each date two naked suitors (this seems to allow for gay dates), in the buff. The idea is the show “stripped...

Review: "Absolutely Fabulous" Hasn't Lost Its "Identity" in Brand New Special
Jane Horrocks, Julia Sawalha, Jennifer Saunders, June Whitfield, and Joanna Lumley

Back in 1992, two ladies named Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone swept into the television landscape and through the sheer force of their Dionysian appetites became heroes for generations of gay men. Hard-drinking, hard-living and hard-shopping, these women represented life lived at its most selfish and unrepentantly shallow, providing a glitter-caked, pill-strewn fantasy life for the many of us dealing with considerable real-life pressures. Ab Fab was hilarious, vulgar, and proudly offensive escapism that openly embraced the gay community as partners in living life to its fullest, middle-class conventions be damned.

After five series and numerous one-off specials (the latest being 2003's "Cold Turkey"/"White Box" Christmas special), Absolutely Fabulous is back with three new episodes bringing Eddy, Pats and the gang up-to-date. And while the show's subversive edge may have dulled a bit over 20 years, it's great to see...

Should Nav and Map App Makers Fear Google?
Earlier we reported that Google was abandoning Tele-Atlas to begin collecting its own mapping data. Now Forbes is reporting that personal navigation companies are afraid that Google will begin making its own Pnd software, undercutting the market's current leaders. Add to this Apple's recent acquisition of a mapping startup ostensibly to develop its own map data service, and you've just calculated the shortest distance to a technology throwdown.

Google would be able to offer such map data more cheaply because it is crowd-sourcing much of the grunt work. (Above, vehicles recording Google Street View, another one of Google's sources of map data, by Chris Malcolm.)

Right now, consumers pay subscription fees for getting fresh mobile maps beamed to their PNDs or smartphones. But Forbes says that Google may pursue a free, ad-supported model that would bring smartphone makers (and customers) running, leaving PNDs behind. With its Android smartphones, Google would have a ready-made mobile launchpad.

Too Soon: Predicting Future Inappropriate New York Post Headlines
Today's New York Post headline about the death of actor David Carradine—"Hung Fu"—is just too perfect to have been conceived in a day. There's no way Murdoch's reliably inappropriate display-copy punsters didn't have that one in reserve—in the same way that most publications have obits of ailing notables waiting to go—hoping to God that Carradine would die exactly the way he did so that nugget of brilliance wouldn't go to waste. Not to be outdone, we've come up with our own stockpile of headlines to use if other beloved TV stars die in horrible, unexpected ways. Swine-felled Flu claims Michael Richards as latest victim M*A*S*H*E*D Alda Alda dies in stampede Everybody Shoves Raymond Ray Romano pushed onto track Two Half Men Sheen and Cryer die together—or rather not Family Tied Suicide pact at show reunion Family Splatters—Did I Do That?...

Absolutely Fabulous: A Remake That Might Actually Get Off the Ground
The UK's Absolutely Fabulous TV show has been seen throughout the world and remains very popular with adults of all ages. There have been several attempts at recreating the bawdy series in the Us but the projects have all ended up stalling. Now, it looks like the time may actually be right.

First airing from 1992 to 1996, Absolutely Fabulous centers around Edina Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley), a pair of immature, chain-smoking, substance-abusing, fashion-obsessed ladies of London. Edina's daughter, "Saffy" (Julia Sawalha), doesn't approve of the excesses which provides plenty of conflict. June Whitfield plays Edna's good-natured mother and Jane Horrocks plays Bubble, Edna's inept personal assistant. Others in the cast include Helen Lederer, Harriet Thorpe, Naoko Mori, Christopher Malcolm, Christopher Ryan, and Mo Gaffney. New episodes of Fabulous began running in 2001.

Fox has recently announced plans to create a Us version of Fabulous for the Fall 2009 schedule.
