Artists for a New South Africa (Ansa) was founded in 1989 by Alfre Woodard, Danny Glover, Mary Steenburgen, Blair Underwood, Cch Pounder and friends to support the quest to end apartheid.
Since its inception, Ansa has raised and granted over nine million dollars to effective African nonprofits, shipped more than 20 tons of books and medical supplies to poor communities and provided comprehensive, ongoing care to over 3,500 AIDS orphans for the last eight years. Ansa continues to work in the U.S. and Africa to combat HIV/AIDS, advance human rights, preserve the legacy and values of the struggle against apartheid and the brave men and women who led it, and build bonds between our nations through arts, culture and the shared pursuit of social justice.

If you’re tired of Netflix hogging all the true-crime glory, Showmax is here to remind you that South Africa has some of the most gripping crime stories in the world and some of the best people telling them. The ABC Killer, dropping on 22 July, is proof. This three-part documentary, directed by Safta-nominated Jasyn Howes (Boetie Boer), tackles the chilling case of Moses Sithole, a serial killer convicted of 38 murders, 40 rapes, and six robberies that sparked nationwide panic. The story begins in the mid-90s, at the end of apartheid, only months after Nelson Mandela became South Africa’s first democratically elected president. Sithole targeted young Black women in Atteridgeville, Boksburg, and Cleveland, earning him the ABC moniker (based on the first letters of each location). Former detective Derrick Nosworthy calls it “the biggest case of our history at the time,” while director Howes, who was just a kid in Johannesburg then,...

When Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani announced his campaign to run for mayor of New York City in October 2024, he was a virtually unknown state assembly member up against a Trump-friendly incumbent, Eric Adams. He wasn’t just a longshot — for many New Yorkers, he felt like an impossibility. But that changed Tuesday night, when Mamdani became the presumptive Democratic nominee after sweeping the city’s ranked choice primary, beating out former New York governor and accused sexual harasser Andrew Cuomo by more than seven points.

Updated: Zohran Mamdani held a solid lead over Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary race for New York mayor, signaling a major upset by a political unknown against the state’s former governor.
Mamdani led Cuomo by nearly eight percentage points, with more than 90% of the vote counted on Tuesday evening, according to the AP.
“Tonight was not our night; tonight was Assemblyman Mamdani’s night,” Cuomo told his supporters, conceding that his rival had “won.” He credited Mamdani with running “a really smart and good and impactful campaign.”
Mamdani, a Democratic socialist and state assemblyman, has run a campaign focused on affordability, proposing things such as a rent freeze and city owned grocery stores. But he put a big emphasis on social media and a heavy slate of media appearances, contrasting himself with the Democratic establishment.

Exclusive: Here’s a chilling trailer for the latest true-crime doc series out of South Africa.
Showmax’s The ABC Killer will look into the grim story of serial killer Moses Sithole, who was convicted of 38 murders, 40 rapes and six robberies, all committed in the space of just over a year, in broad daylight. “I thought the devil has come down to Earth,” says former detective Paul Nkomo.
The three-parter will go back 30 years – just months after Nelson Mandela had become South Africa’s first democratically elected president – to when rookie journalist Tamsen de Beer, working a night shift at The Star newspaper, received a life-changing call from a man who claimed to be South Africa’s most prolific serial killer.
Through repeat conversations, the two developed a disturbing rapport. “It was like a journey I was on with him,” says de Beer in the trailer. “We were bonded in a strange,...

The South African artist has exhibited everywhere, bagging awards in art and theatre, while his work sells for millions. So why did he find becoming an artist so unnatural? Ahead of a major British show, he reveals all
You only have to glance at William Kentridge’s family tree to realise why he is such an outsider. His maternal grandmother, Irene Geffen, was South Africa’s first female barrister while his mother, Felicia Geffen, became an anti-apartheid lawyer. Then there’s his father, Sydney Kentridge, the indomitable QC who represented Nelson Mandela in the 1960s and fought for justice for Steve Biko in the 70s. Studying law would have been the obvious path. “Public speaking, thinking on my feet, were natural and easy skills,” said Kentridge back in 1998. “Being an artist was a very unnatural and hard thing for me to do.”
That’s quite a statement. Because in the three decades since,...

International football (soccer) and rugby trace their roots back to mid-19th Century Britain when the two sports diverged. The differences were codified when a group of students calling themselves the Football Association set down the Cambridge Rules in 1863, with one key point outlawing the use of hands to carry the ball. This drove a major wedge and advocates of the Rugby style of football (named after the school) went on to form the Rugby Union in 1870. A further split in the rugby faction led to Rugby League and Rugby Union. Football and Rugby League would become sports of the working class, while Rugby is perceived as more of an elitist game, played in public schools and at international tournaments. These class distinctions remained as football and rugby spread around the world, as summed up by the witticism: "Football is a gentleman's game played by hooligans; rugby is a hooligan's game played by gentlemen.

Back in the day, when someone used to mention South Africa, we’d associate the country with Nelson Mandela, all the work he had done to bring an end to apartheid, and how he had inspired the entire world as the first Black president of the nation. When it came to the topic of cricket, we’d promptly start talking about Jonty Rhodes, Gary Kirsten (whose contribution to Indian cricket was insane), Jacques Kallis, Shaun Pollock, Ab de Villiers, Dale Steyn (I used to copy his bowling style), and of course, Makhaya Ntini. The men’s football World Cup that was hosted by the country was incredibly entertaining, and we got two of the most iconic songs of all time: “Waka Waka” and “Wavin’ Flag” out of it. And if you get into the world of entertainment, you have Charlize Theron, whose acting skills are as admirable as her philanthropic work.

Idris Elba Darth Vader (Photo Credit – Instagram)
True this: Idris Elba, the man with the voice that could make even Darth Vader sound soft, stepping into the dark side of the Force. Well, Star Wars fans came this close to seeing Elba as the most feared villain in the galaxy. And honestly, had he suited up in that black armor, Star Wars would’ve still been just as legendary, but with a whole lot more swagger.
Elba’s career has been nothing short of a rollercoaster. From BBC roles in Crimewatch to turning heads in The Wire as the smooth-talking Stringer Bell, he’s built a name for himself as one of Hollywood’s most versatile and commanding actors. But what if he had channeled all that charisma and raw power into the Star Wars franchise? Imagine Elba’s deep, velvety voice, not just narrating, but commanding the galaxy. That...

Editor’s note: As a member of The Serpent Players repertory theater group in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, John Kani partnered with fellow Black actor Winston Ntshona and white playwright Athol Fugard in 1972 to write Sizwe Banzi Is Dead. The drama revolves around apartheid’s oppressive pass laws, which governed where Blacks could and could not work, live and not live, etc.
A year later, they wrote The Island, which is based on a true story and set in a prison not unlike the Robben Island institution where Nelson Mandela was held for 27 years. Kani and Ntshona were the lone actors in both Fugard-directed plays.

Athol Fugard, South Africa’s foremost dramatist who explored the pervasiveness of apartheid in such searing works as The Blood Knot and ‘Master Harold’… and the Boys to show how the racist system distorted the humanity of his country with what he called “a daily tally of injustice,” has died. He was 92.
The South African government confirmed Fugard’s death and said South Africa “has lost one of its greatest literary and theatrical icons, whose work shaped the cultural and social landscape of our nation.”
Six of Fugard’s plays landed on Broadway, including The Blood Knot and two productions of ‘Master Harold’… and the Boys.
The Blood Knot tells of how the relationship between two Black half-brothers deteriorates because one has lighter skin and can pass for white, which ultimately leads to him treating his darker half-brother as an inferior.

Cole was a black South African photographer whose work illuminated the reality of life under apartheid, but Raoul Peck’s excellent documentary unearths a life of exile and homesickness
Haitian film-maker Raoul Peck won an Oscar nomination for his 2016 documentary I Am Not Your Negro about James Baldwin, whose writings were voiced by Samuel L Jackson; now he takes a comparable approach to a more elusive and in some ways more complex subject. This is the black South African photographer Ernest Cole whose fierce pictures of life under apartheid brought this political reality home to the US and the west, and played a real part in the pressure brought to bear on the South African government. But it was Cole’s terrible destiny to live as a stateless exile, mostly in the US, finally dying penniless in 1990 just as Nelson Mandela was being released.

Did Shia Labeouf’s extreme acting methods have onlookers concerned? ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
“I didn’t bathe for four months,” Shia Labeouf admitted to Dazed Digital, detailing his intense prep to play a World War II soldier. And that wasn’t all. He also pulled out a tooth, slashed his face, and spent hours watching horses die. While some saw the dedication, others saw disruption.
The cast and crew weren’t thrilled. According to The Daily Mail, Pitt and director David Ayer warned Labeouf about his behavior. But he didn’t budge. His refusal to shower got so bad that he was reportedly moved to a different hotel, away from the rest of the cast. A source claimed Labeouf was “trying to prove he was the most dedicated star” and isolated himself.

Sundance’s Free Leonard Peltier outlines the decades-long efforts to free the Indigenous activist from prison – up to the commutation of his sentence one week before the premiere
Of all the documentaries at the Sundance film festival this year, perhaps none is as timely as Free Leonard Peltier, Jesse Short Bull and David France’s film on the Indigenous activist imprisoned for nearly half a century.
Peltier, now 80 years old, is serving consecutive life sentences for the killing of two FBI agents during a shootout at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota in 1975, though he has maintained his innocence. Activists, celebrities and liberation advocates such as Nelson Mandela have called for his release for decades, citing railroaded justice and evidence of prosecutorial misconduct; the FBI and law enforcement, meanwhile, have campaigned vociferously against any commutation of his sentence.

The 2017 adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower had a star-studded cast to bring Roland Deschain's quest for the Tower to life. The Dark Tower follows Roland Deschain (Idris Elba) as he takes Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor) on a quest to stop Walter (Matthew McConaughey) from destroying the titular Tower that holds the universe together. Unfortunately, The Dark Tower is one of the few adaptations that Stephen King criticized himself, but it's certainly not because of its cast.
While Mike Flanagan's upcoming The Dark Tower series will redefine the characters King created in live-action, the 2017 movie still had an important role in bringing them to the screen. Even though The Dark Tower is often criticized for being one of the least faithful and worst Stephen King movies, its cast is one of the few things that most fans agree was worthy of praise. Morgan Freeman once said, “The best way to guarantee a loss is to quit.” If anyone’s taken this advice to heart, it’s the actor himself. Over the decades, he has worked tirelessly, proving time and again that quitting isn’t in his vocabulary.
From that unmistakable voice that could calm a wild bear to performances that tug at the heartstrings like a pro, this Tennessee-born actor, now 87, has made a career out of not playing by the rules. And who can blame him? When you’ve been in the game as long as he has, you get to do whatever the heck you want.

Clint Eastwood's Hollywood career began in the 1950s with minor uncredited acting roles before he became a household name in America as one of the stars of Rawhide, a Western television series that aired between 1959 and 1965. That role, in turn, led to his casting in Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars, where he played the iconic "Man with No Name" and soon became one of the most popular actors in the entire world. Over the years since then, Eastwood has brought his stoic presence, hoarse voice, and minimalist acting choices to the more than 60 films that he's starred in, many of which he has also directed.
1971 was the year Clint Eastwood directed his first movie, Play Misty for Me. Since then, he's helmed 40 films (with more reportedly on the way) and has even won the Academy Award for Best Director (and Picture) twice. Many of Eastwood's films have become bonafide classics,...

In 1967, Ernest Cole’s House of Bondage, a photobook examining life under apartheid in South Africa, was published. Fifty years later, 60,000 of Cole’s unknown negatives were uncovered, including photographs from his years as an exile in New York City. Much happened in those intervening years, both in South Africa and in Cole’s life, and Raoul Peck’s Ernest Cole: Lost and Found focuses primarily on filling in the blanks in that stretch of history.
The documentary divides its attention between exploring South Africa’s social and political unrest under apartheid and the reverberations of its eventual abnegation, examining many of Cole’s newly discovered photographs, and detailing the man’s life from the late ’60s until his untimely death in 1990 from cancer. It’s a lot to cover in under two hours, and Peck never quite finds an effective way of weaving the disparate threads together, leaving the...

Jones had previously hosted SNL in February 1990. He was coming off the back of promoting his Back on the Block album and turned up with a lot of musical guests including Kool Moe Dee, Melle Mel and Quincy D III.
The 10 musical performers Jones brought with him is believed to have been the record for the show, one that stands to this day.
He also paid tribute to Nelson Mandela, who was set to be released from prison hours after the show, during his monologue.

On October 2nd, we celebrate Gandhi Jayanti, marking the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, a global symbol of peace, non-violence, and justice. Born in 1869, Gandhi’s philosophy of ahimsa (non-violence) and satyagraha (truth and resistance) transformed India’s struggle for independence into a moral revolution. His unwavering commitment to civil disobedience inspired global movements for human rights, from Martin Luther King Jr. in America to Nelson Mandela in South Africa. Gandhi’s ideology transcended political boundaries, leaving a lasting imprint on the world—and even the film industry. Filmmakers across continents have sought to capture his life and ideals on screen, creating enduring works that not only tell the story of Gandhi but also remind audiences of the power of truth, empathy, and resistance in the face of injustice. Through cinema, Gandhi’s legacy continues to inspire generations, proving that his teachings remain as relevant today as ever. To honor his memory,...

Phil Donahue, known as the “King of Daytime Talk,” has died at the age of 88. He passed away in his home surrounded by family on Sunday, August 18. To remember the daytime television legend, here is a look at the talk show host’s long, successful career.
A Look Back At Phil Donahue’s Career
The daytime talk show host kickstarted his career in the late 1950s. He got his start on radio and television before pitching his own talk show, The Phil Donahue Show. The show was created in 1967 in Dayton, Ohio. Over the years, he gained credibility for talking about controversial topics. He also took viewers behind bars at the Ohio State Penitentiary in 1971, which gained him a lot of recognition among journalists.
The show’s hour-long broadcast dedicated itself to single issues. Each episode would cover things like abuse in the Catholic Church, race relations, and feminism, all hot topics at the time.
