Usher Will Be the Face of AMC’s Next Event Concert Film
Image
Yeah! After Taylor Swift did her part to save movie theaters with the surprise release of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” last fall, AMC Theaters is partnering on the release of another event concert film, this time featuring R&b and pop superstar Usher.

AMC Theatres along with Trafalgar Releasing and Sony Music Vision will release the concert film “Usher: Rendezvous in Paris” in theaters worldwide for a limited run between September 12-15. Tickets go on sale August 6.

“Rendezvous in Paris” was filmed across eight different performances by Usher in France during Paris Fashion week at La Seine Musicale back in 2023 prior to his performance at the Super Bowl earlier this year. The concert film of course features some of his biggest hits like “Yeah!,” “My Boo,” “Love In This Club” and many more, and the stage show incorporated much of what he brought to his intimate Vegas residency shows.

Black Panther star Letitia Wright teases the return of Shuri: “There’s a lot coming up”
Image
We last saw Letitia Wright as Shuri in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but with several big Avengers movies on the horizon, it stands to reason that we’ll be seeing the character again.

While appearing on The View to promote Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot, Wright was asked by co-host Sunny Hostin if Shuri would be making another appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “If it’s, uh, let’s just say, let’s just say… I would like to continue with Shuri,” Wright said, clearly aware those Marvel snipers are keeping an eye out. “She’s one of my favorite characters, such a blessing, honestly, I kid you not. I’m so grateful for her.“

When asked if a third installment of Black Panther was in the works, Wright merely said, “There’s a lot to, a lot to — a lot coming up.” The actress also...

‘Surrounded’ Review
Image
Stars: Letitia Wright, Jamie Bell, Michael Kenneth Williams, Jeffrey Donovan, Kevin Wiggins, Brett Gelman | Written by Andrew Pagana, Justin Thomas | Directed by Anthony Mandler

Surrounded is the latest in a long line of black-themed Westerns that stretches from early efforts like The Bull-Dogger and Harlem on the Prairie through John Ford’s Sergeant Rutledge and Blazing Saddles. Blacksploitation star Fred Williamson had a string of horse operas, such as Take a Hard Ride and the provocatively titled Boss N*gger, one of three films he made to use that word in the title. More recently we’ve had Django Unchained and Murder at Yellowstone City, neither of which impressed me. Can this unhyped and unheralded entry in the genre deliver the goods?

‘Surrounded’ Review: An Outlaw and an Outsider Spar in Director Anthony Mandler’s Top-Notch Western
Image
And now for something completely different: After attracting attention and appreciation with his debut feature, “Monster,” a riveting contemporary drama about a Black high school honor student charged as an accessory to a fatal shooting in his Harlem neighborhood, director Anthony Mandler continues to impress with his sophomore effort, “Surrounded,” an exceptionally well-crafted Western that spins a gripping, racially charged tale of suspicion, deception and survival in post-Civil War New Mexico. Echoes of Sergio Leone, Budd Boetticher and John Ford abound throughout the sturdy screenplay by Andrew Pagana and Justin Thomas. But the movie is less a genre pastiche than a multifaceted character study in which perfectly cast lead players Letitia Wright (“Black Panther”) and Jamie Bell (“Snowpiercer”) do most of the narrative heavy lifting.

It’s 1870, and ex-slave Mo Washington (Wright) is determined to start a new life by journeying westward. Disguised as a man for her own protection,...

Director Anthony Mandler Remembers Michael K. Williams in Surrounded
Image
Surrounded stars Letitia Wright as Moses Washington, a former slave and Union soldier who masquerades as a man. The story takes place five years after the Civil War. Washington has a claim for land in Colorado. She endures cruelty and racism while securing a stagecoach ride out west. They're ambushed by notorious bank robber Tommy Walsh (Jamie Bell) and his gang. A firefight results in Washington capturing Walsh as they wait for the sheriff's posse in the unforgiving wilderness. He recognizes her as a woman. Washington must defend herself from attackers, the elements, and Walsh's murderous subterfuge.

Famed photographer and music video director Anthony Mandler spoke with MovieWeb about his second feature. Surrounded became a vastly different film after Wright's involvement. The original plot had "a woman and African-American man" surviving in a "theater-like" setting. Mandler saw "an opportunity to do more" after learning about Cathay Williams. She pretended...

Surrounded Review: Letitia Wright Opens Fire in a Gritty Western
Image
A former slave masquerades as a man to enlist in the Union Army and searches for her American dream after the Civil War. Her plans are interrupted when she's trapped guarding a notorious bank robber in a desolate wilderness. Surrounded stars Letitia Wright in a gritty Western that addresses racial and gender inequality with a fusillade of bullets. The protagonist finds an unexpected kinship in a vicious murderer who sees behind her facade. Sublime cinematography and rich character development adds texture to a narrative that runs thin but never fails to be engaging.

Moses Washington (Wright) prays in an 1870 church at the edge of the western frontier. She hides her most prized possession in an old and worn out bible. Mo has secured a land deed to a gold mine in Colorado. It's her treasured prize after leaving the army with a distinguished record. She pretends to be a man...

Black Panther's Letitia Wright Reveals the Most Difficult Part of Playing Shuri
Image
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Letitia Wright said it was a challenge to play Shuri in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film given the emotional weight placed on the Academy Award-winning sequel.

Speaking with ComicBook.com about her upcoming Western drama film, Surrounded, Wright expressed how much more difficult it was to play Shuri in Wakanda Forever than it was in the original Black Panther movie. According to Wright, she had to channel a different energy from her normal self in Wakanda Forever to properly channel the feelings her character dealt with following the passing of T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman). "So, in the second film, those are completely different emotions from what she carried in the first film," she said. "But it's a different energy than what I usually carry. I am light-hearted and fun. I am. Let me give myself some credit. But maintaining that energy all the time is quite difficult.

Surrounded Review
Image
After ushering in a new dawn as the latest Black Panther in Wakanda Forever, actor Letitia Wright tackles her most ambitious project yet, which she also co-produces. Directed by Anthony Mandler from a script by Andrew Pagana and Justin Thomas, Surrounded is a Western by design, but it subverts the traditional tropes to become a deeper analysis of the different effects of trauma and how it shapes people. Actors Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) and the late Michael K. Williams (The Wire) also star.

Set five years after the Civil War, former Buffalo Soldier Moses "Mo" Washington (Wright) disguises herself as a man and departs on a stagecoach on the way to lay claim to a better tomorrow. Out of nowhere, the stagecoach is attacked by the infamous outlaw Tommy Walsh (Bell) and his gang. After a struggle, Tommy is subdued and captured. The rest of the passengers seek help, while...

Interview: Letitia Wright, Jamie Bell, and Anthony Mandler Talk Surrounded
Anthony Mandler
Stepping into the new feature, Surrounded, I had very little idea as to what I was about to experience. Directed by Anthony Mandler, the film features the impressive talents of both Letitia Wright and Jamie Bell. The western tells the story of a former Buffalo Soldier who finds herself tasked with watching over a notorious outlaw. It’s an excellent character study that also happens to feature a number of thrilling sequences, including an incredible stagecoach robbery. I was floored by Surrounded.

Recently, we had the extreme pleasure to chat with the film’s stars as well as Mr. Mandler himself. For Letitia Wright, who has been proving to be an amazing talent, she opened up about taking on this role and to what it entailed. As for Jamie Bell, the actor discussed working with Ms. Wright, and playing a villainous character with a lot of depth. Both give exceptional...

This is arriving to watch on VOD / digital for streaming in June this summer - it's skipping theaters unfortunately. I'd watch it on the big screen. The Wild West has never seen a force like Moses "Mo" Washington. Former Buffalo Soldier Mo Washington travels West to lay claim on a gold mine. After her stagecoach is ambushed, Mo is tasked with holding a dangerous outlaw captive and must survive the day when the bandit's gang tries to free him. Letitia Wright stars as "Mo" Washington, with Jamie Bell as Tommy Walsh ("the outlaw"), Michael K. Williams (in one of his final roles - filmed before he passed away in 2021), Jeffrey Donovan,...

MGM Repping Sales On Western ‘Surrounded’ Starring Letitia Wright, Jamie Bell & The Late Michael K. Williams In Last Movie Role
Image
Exclusive: MGM has boarded world sales rights to western Surrounded, starring Letitia Wright, Jamie Bell, Jeffrey Donovan, Brett Gelman and the late Michael K. Williams in his last movie role.

Anthony Mandler directed the feature, which has been in post-production since early 2021.

Andrew Pagana and Justin Thomas penned the script, which is set five years after the Civil War, where former Buffalo Soldier Moses “Mo” Washington travels west to lay claim on a gold mine bequeathed by her late slaveowner father. It is a mean, dangerous world for an unaccompanied Black woman and so Mo travels into the deep frontier disguised as a man. After her stagecoach is ambushed, she is tasked with holding a dangerous outlaw captive and must survive the day when the bandit’s gang tries to free him.

Bron co-produced with Blackhand Media Production, in association with Mandalay Pictures, 3.16 Productions and Creative Wealth Media. Producers...

2022 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Anthony Mandler’s Surrounded
Image
With an already amazing track record as a music video helmer / television commercial director Anthony Mandler saw his debut feature film Monster break into the Sundance Film Festival in 2018 and it finally got released this year via the Sundance folks. We doubt it’ll be that long of a wait for his sophomore feature which went into production in November of 2019. We a shoot in New Mexico, Mandler’s Surrounded was surrounded by the likes of Letitia Wright, Jamie Bell, and Michael K. Williams – this counts as the actor’s final work before his premature death. A Civil War era project penned by Andrew Pagana and Justin Thomas, supporting players include Jeffrey Donovan and Brett Gelman.…...

Die in A Gunfight Trailer: Alexandra Daddario Is Caught in One Crazy Love Affair
Image
The trailer to the upcoming modern day adaptation and updated version of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Die in a Gunfight, is finally out and rocking on YouTube. The romantic crime movie which was acquired for distribution by LionsGate is Collin Schiffli's third film. It is a complete turn-around from his usual style and previous works that include the award winning directorial debut Animals, which won the director a special grand jury award at the 2014 SXSW Film Festival and was awarded best feature, best director, and best actor at The Midwest Independent Film Festival's BMAs in Chicago.

Die in a Gunfight has been through almost seven years of developmental journey after the script had been drafted and listed on the Black List 2010 edition as one of the most loved script yet to be produced. It was later revealed that Zac Efron, through his production company Ninjas Run-in' Wild,...

How ‘Monster’ Spent 3 Years Going from Muted Sundance Premiere to Netflix Original Hit
Image
Filmmaking rarely travels a straight path, but for “Monster” it was exceptionally twisty. After the legal drama starring Kelvin Harrison Jr. premiered at Sundance in 2018 in the U.S. Dramatic Competition, it’s seen a title change, its first distribution deal fall through, and the original title restored. Producers Tonya Lewis Lee and Nikki Silver say it was all worth it: The movie premiered on Netflix May 7 and was among the top 10 Netflix titles in the U.S. last week.

“It has been a long journey, but it has been a really good journey,” Lee said. “It didn’t go the way we thought it would, but ultimately we landed where we were supposed to land. People are seeing it, they’re feeling it, and they’re responding to it.”

“Monster” is based on the 1999 YA novel by Walter Dean Myers, which follows a high school honor student (Harrison) who...

Netflix’s Long-Awaited ‘Monster’: Kelvin Harrison Jr. Stars in Strikingly Relevant Courtroom Drama
Image
Photo: ‘Monster’/Netflix Debuting at the Sundance Film Festival in January of 2018, it has been a long and winding road for music-video director Anthony Mandler’s first feature film ‘Monster’ to make it to audiences. Though close to three and a half years have unfolded since its first screening, the film finally found a home at Netflix, premiering on the streaming service on Friday, May 7th. While three whole years may seem like a long time in the world of film, the themes of the John Legend-produced ‘Monster’ have sadly not lost a shred of relevancy or applicability to the America it is now being widely released in to. Monster [Video Review]

Fait Accompli: Mandler Mines the Gray Zone of Truth and Consequences

While more of an interesting conversation piece than the accomplished melodrama it deserves to be, Anthony Mandler makes his directorial debut with Monster, based on the 1999 novel by noted YA author Walter Dean Myers. A commendable cast, many with a presence overpowering the limited characterizations they’re allowed to play, isn’t quite enough for the film to succeed as an astute social issue drama. Mandler and his Dp David Devlin come from the realm of music videos (Mandler has directed sixteen such items for Rihanna alone), and there’s a definite sense of parallel film school vibes not only in the film’s text but behind the scenes as well.…...

‘Monster’ Review: Kelvin Harrison Jr. Tries to ‘Rashomon’ Himself Out of a Messy Courtroom Drama
Image
Anthony Mandler’s “Monster” has burnt through the bulk of its running time before the first-time filmmaker opts to finally do away with any subtleties. The messy drama has already played fast and loose with time and perspective, shifting between bleak courtroom-set scenes and more emotive flashbacks that explain how budding teenage filmmaker Steve Harmon (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) has ended up on trial as an accessory to armed robbery and murder. Finally, however, it seems as if Mandler just gives up and goes for the nuclear option: the “Rashomon” choice.

Given the film’s bent toward the most literal of cinematic tropes and tricks — Steve tries to dream his way out of his horrible predicament by frequently pretending it’s all just a screenplay he’s writing in his head — it’s not the most shocking of choices, but it’s certainly a blunt one. While that storytelling conceit likely...

‘Monster’ With Kelvin Harrison Jr. Finds New Resonance Post-George Floyd But Still Feels A Little Standard Issue [Review]
Image
Coincidences are a hell of a thing. Anthony Mandler’s indie drama “Monster” is a film that premiered at Sundance in 2018, but it only made its way on to Netflix now, the week of May 7. In the same week, Derek Chauvin, the convicted murderer of George Floyd, moves to request a new trial. His lawyer claims Chauvin was denied a fair trial due to the pre-trial publicity.

Monster Review: Netflix Film Examines Racism in the Justice System
Anthony Mandler
Much like its protagonist, Anthony Mandler’s Monster is a film obsessed with aesthetics. Main character Steve Harmon says he makes sense of his humanity through understanding the shapes and textures of the world around him, and with an occasionally heavy hand, director Mandler similarly captures Steve’s world through a stylized lens. It’s there in the postcard perfect sunsets of a youth spent growing up in Harlem, and it’s here again in the film’s unnaturally gray, sterile courtroom scenes.

But the hardness of Monster, which speaks to the very dehumanizing nature of its title, comes from where we’re first introduced to Steve as played by a riveting Kelvin Harrison Jr.: He’s a teenager, terrified by a criminal justice system that has vilified him as the proverbial monster from the minute he was charged with felony murder. If we’re asked to see the world as Steve does,...

‘Monster’ Review: An Involving Portrait of a Young Black Man Accused of Murder
Image
The New York City courtroom in which 17-year-old honors student Steve Harmon stands accused of felony murder isn’t the customary dark wood and tan walls affair. “Monster” there’s a reason beyond stylish production design for the palette of grays. For the involving, nuanced drama — a Sundance 2018 competition title starring Kelvin Harrison Jr. — explores the gray areas of guilt, innocence and criminal justice, especially as they pertain to young Black men, who are too often seen as guilty till proven otherwise. Innocent is likely too much to ask of a system in which young men like Steve are seen as the beasts, as the monsters of the movie’s title.

Streaming on Netflix, “Monster” is based on the 1999 young adult novel by Walter Dean Myers (who died in 2014). The themes of the award-winning book remain timely and are made even more so by screenwriters Radha Blank, Colen C. Wiley and Janece Shaffer.

Interview: Producers Tonya Lewis Lee, Nikki Silver, Mike Jackson, Daniel Crown & Yoni Liebling – Anthony Mandler’s Monster
Image
Sundance ’18 crowd-favorite Monster tells the agonizing tale of a 17-year-old honors student in a racially-charged legal battle. Adapted from Walter Dean Meyers’ award-winning book of the same name, Anthony Mandler’s directorial debut is an ambitious take on race and the subjectivity of storytelling via a star-studded cast and soundtrack. Needless to say, this U.S. Dramatic Comp selected title had a huge producing team behind it.

Among them were Tonya Lewis Lee and Nikki Silver, founders of Tonik. Productions (She’s Gotta Have It). Lewis Lee (married to Spike) has a history publishing children’s books and creating content for Nickelodeon; Silver has won 5 emmys for Reading Rainbow.…...

The 7 Best Movies New to Netflix in May 2021
Image
Netflix may have been sitting pretty during the pandemic, but the streamer’s anemic May 2021 lineup makes clear that even the most deep-pocketed and prolific movie studio on Earth struggled to create new content during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic. The streamer is sticking to its guarantee of releasing at least one new Netflix Original every week, but fulfilling that promise has required them to grasp at straws; notable titles over the next few weeks include the Amy Adams thriller “The Woman in the Window” and the Anthony Mandler’s legal drama “Monster”.

As usual, there are a handful of intriguing unknowns (e.g. Alexandre Aja’s woman-stuck-in-a-cryogenic-chamber thriller “Oxygen”) and at least one brilliant diamond in the rough — “The Disciple” is technically hitting the service on April 30, but we’re counting it as the biggest May discovery waiting to happen — but there’s a reason why Netflix...
