Tomorrow, Netflix is premiering Leanne, a new sitcom. Some will think of this as a vehicle for stand-up comic Leanne Morgan, which is fair: It is her name in the title, she’s credited as a co-creator and the show revolves around her character, also named Leanne, navigating a midlife split from her longtime husband Bill (Ryan Stiles). Some will categorize it among the many multicam sitcoms for which its co-creator, Chuck Lorre, is known, including Two and A Half Men, The Big Bang Theory and Dharma & Greg. But discerning viewers will have marked “New Kristen Johnston show” on their calendars as soon as Morgan, during her guest co-host stint, threw to a preview clip on Today’s fourth hour.
For any who doubt whether Johnston should always be considered a headliner — including in Leanne, where Johnston’s character Carol is undeniably the sidekick to her sister, the show...

[Editor’s note: This interview was originally published on January 23, 2025 as part of our Sundance coverage. It has been lightly edited and refreshed in time for the film‘s release later this week.]
Filmmaker Sophie Brooks couldn’t wait for audiences to see her second film, the darkly funny and very wise “Oh, Hi!” at Sundance in January. When the film, starring Molly Gordon and Logan Lerman, unspooled opening weekend in Park City, it came to the festival nearly fresh out of the box, all the better to conceal the delightful twist and turns at its heart. Please, don’t let anything spoil it. (Don’t worry: This chat is spoiler-free.)
“What’s crazy is, we finished the movie yesterday. We finished the mix, literally last night at 7:45 Pm,” Brooks said when she spoke to IndieWire in early January. “Even this morning I woke up and I was like, ‘Oh, oh, I don’t have to go to work today.’ It’s been this wild process where we submitted [to Sundance] on a rough cut, got in, which was incredibly exciting. Lena Dunhamis back with a brand new show! The Too Much creator worked with her husband, Luis Felber, to tell a fictionalized version of their love story in the new Netflix series. But Dunham has also been answering questions about her first beloved series: Girls. The HBO comedy featured Dunham as Hannah, a young woman living in New York City trying to figure out her life. Which did include dating Adam (Adam Driver) and some "good soup." One of the most beloved characters on the series, though, is Shoshanna, played by Zosia Mamet.
When talking with the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, Dunham spoke about a character from Girls she loved the most and who she'd want to revisit in a spin-off series. “I love Shoshanna,” she said. “I am on record as saying she is my favorite girl… I think Shoshanna is going places.” Dunham praised Mamet for her work on the series,...

Lena Dunham, the creator of the critically lauded Girls, is back with her latest series, Netflix's Too Much. Dunham's anticipated outing follows New Yorker Jessica (Megan Stalter) as she navigates life in London after a breakup. The rom-com landed on the streamer on July 10 and has earned high marks from critics: it currently boasts an impressive 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, signaling that it's "just enough" for most.
Dunham is best known for HBO's Girls. She created, wrote, and starred in the show, which ran from 2012 to 2017 and garnered her significant critical acclaim, including Golden Globe and Emmy nominations. The show centered on four young women, as they navigated life in the Big Apple post-college. The popular series followed their struggles with relationships and careers, and became known for its raw and humorous portrayal of female complexities. Despite Girls' success, some critiqued the series for its lack of diversity and unlikable and privileged characters.

Could Lena Dunham bring “Girls” into the 2020s? The series creator and recent “Too Much” showrunner told Variety that she is still open to the possibility of revisiting the beloved HBO show. “Girls” concluded in 2017 after six seasons, and starred Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, and Zosia Mamet as a millennial friend group in Brooklyn.
While Dunham has teased a possible “Girls” reboot down the line for years and has been in talks with HBO about bringing the show back, she is now detailing what that revival would entail.
“If we had something to say that was really specific and it was a moment in their lives where we felt like revisiting it — like millennial women becoming mothers or stepping into menopause or going to live at old-age homes — I would always want to work with those people again,” Dunham said.

With Girls experiencing a resurgence in recent years, fans of Zosia Mamet’s character Shoshanna Shapiro have been hopeful that she would get her own spinoff.
And now Girls creator Lena Dunham is addressing that possibility.
“I love Shoshanna. I am on record as saying she is my favorite girl,” Dunham said on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, adding that Shoshanna is the character that is most likely “going places” out of the four main girls.
In addition to loving the character of Shoshanna, Dunham said that it was “such a joy to watch Zosia be her.”
“So if there was, like, the right context for us to do it, I’d be fucking thrilled,” Dunham said. “And also to do anything with her.”
Dunham explained that she and Mamet have jokingly “kicked around” ideas of where Shoshanna would be today. “She’d be so brilliant at revisiting it,...

Lena Dunham's Girls was a successful show that ran for six seasons. Dunham herself has admitted some people were "really disappointed" with an aspect of the series.
Girls aired in 2012, and the four main characters - played by Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Dunham herself - were all white. Ahead of her show Too Much, Dunham spoke to The Independentabout the comedy that made her a star while expressing concerns about its lack of diversity.
“I think one of the profound issues around Girls,” she told the outlet, “was that there was so little real estate for women in television that if you had a show called Girls, which is such a monolithic name, it sounds like it’s describing all the girls in all the places. And so if it’s not reflecting a multitude of experiences, I understand how that would be really disappointing to people.

2012 was a different time. Barack Obama was the U.S. President, "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen and "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye (featuring Kimbra) topped the Billboard charts, and "Gangnam Style" was, like, a thing. Also, "Girls," the comedy series created and helmed by writer, director, and actor Lena Dunham, stared airing on HBO and inspired literal decades of discourse.
Dunham is returning to the small screen with Netflix's new original series "Too Much," which premieres on July 10 — and in a feature in Variety, she admitted that she would consider a revival of "Girls" (sort of like the "Sex and the City" reboot "...And Just Like That," except hopefully a "Girls" reboot would be good). It would be tricky, though.

Lena Dunham said she now understands why the lack of diversity on her hit HBO show Girls was “really disappointing to people.”
The coming-of-age comedy-drama, which ran for six seasons from 2012 to 2017, was previously criticized for its characters not accurately representing New York City’s diverse population. The creator and star defended the series in 2012, saying she’s “half-Jew, half-wasp” and wanted to avoid “tokenism in casting.”
More than a decade after Girls first premiered, Dunham recently reflected on the show, telling The Independent, “I think one of the profound issues around Girls was that there was so little real estate for women in television that if you had a show called Girls, which is such a monolithic name, it sounds like it’s describing all the girls in all the places. And so if it’s not reflecting a multitude of experiences, I understand how that would be really disappointing to people.

Allison Williams had to get “Stronger” to play Marnie. The actress recently detailed a cut storyline that involved her love-to-be-hated “Girls” character working as a SoulCycle instructor. “Girls” aired on HBO for six seasons, from 2012 to 2017, with creator Lena Dunham, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, and Adam Driver co-starring.
“Sometimes, in the process of writing a season of a show, the plans change,” Williams said during Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang’s “Las Culturistas” podcast, as reported by EW. “Marnie was a SoulCycle instructor for a season and that ended up getting cut out of the show.”
Williams added, “Listen, I was devastated. I trained, I went to, like, double classes at the SoulCycle in New York City.”

Known for its poignant take on the Millennial experience and messy characters, the TV show Girls faced plenty of flak and criticism throughout its run. Airing on HBO from 2012 to 2017, Girls followed an ensemble cast of young women attempting to find themselves in New York City, including Allison Williams as Marnie. High-strung and imperfect, Williams was often unfairly compared to her character. Most of the other women on the show, like Lena Dunham, Jemima Kirke, and Zosia Mamet, faced similar critiques from audiences and critics.
Ahead of the premiere of her upcoming movie, M3GAN 2.0, Williams has reflected on the early works that made her famous, like Girls. Though Williams has been tied to the horror genre in recent years thanks to projects like Get Out and the first M3GAN, she'll always be associated with Marine and her time on Girls, for better or worse. However, as time has progressed,...

The key races for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards couldn’t be more different.
The comedy categories appear to be heading for another showdown between The Bear — once again prompting an obligatory “Is it a drama or a comedy?” debate — and Hacks, with several returning shows still in the mix while the drama fields, which Shōgun dominated last year, are wide open.
While voters can, and in many cases should, absolutely go back to prior favorites like The White Lotus, Severance and The Last of Us, the THR television critics have recommendations on some familiar and some quirky and offbeat ways to fill out ballots.
Voting for the nomination round closes on Monday, June 23, with nominations announced on Tuesday, July 15. The 2025 Emmys will air on CBS and Paramount+ on Sept. 14, with Nate Bargatze serving as host.

It has been nearly 10 years since Girlsended, and the show is already beginning to see a resurgence. Led by Lena Dunham (Hannah Helene Horvath), the show starred four women who struggle to manage their lives in the heart of New York City. Dunham starred alongside Allison Williams (Marnie), Jemima Kirke (Jessa), Zosia Mamet (Shoshanna), and Adam Driver (Adam Sackler). The show ran from 2012 to 2017 and featured over 60 episodes across Girls' six seasons. While it entered dormancy after the series ended, it has quietly begun to experience a revival, as new audiences are discovering the show.

Williams believes that, because older viewers are now "in the safety of their adulthood," they can "enjoy watching the chaos" in a way that they could not before. Voting for the 2025 Emmys officially opened today, and Gold Derby has spotted several intriguing strategies, omissions, and oddities in the ballots, which are available to view on the Television Academy website.
When it comes to the writing and directing categories, a popular strategy is to submit as few options as possible, so as not to split the vote. (Remember how Succession would only submit a single episode in writing each year? It won that race four seasons in a row.) That's why we're so surprised to see ABC's boat-themed medical drama Doctor Odyssey flooding the ballot 11 different times for Best Drama Directing. If the show can't pinpoint one or two stand-out directors out of Jen Lynch, Our Lady J, Tessa Blake, Paris Barclay, Crystle Roberson Dorsey, Brad Buecker, Millicent Shelton, Michael Medico, Steven Canals, Maggie Kiley, and John J. Gray, how are the voters supposed to?

‘Oh, Hi!’ Trailer: Molly Gordon Holds Logan Lerman Accountable (in Multiple Ways) in Twisted Rom-Com
Girl meets guy. Girl falls for guy. Guy might not be totally truthful with girl. So what does a modern woman do? Well, Sophie Brooks’ “Oh, Hi!” might be the twisted answer to a very relatable dilemma.
Billed as a “subversive rom-com” to not give too much away, “Oh, Hi!” premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. Molly Gordon and Logan Lerman star as Iris and Isaac, a couple whose first romantic getaway soon goes awry. The description teases that the “odd dark comedy takes on the highs and lows of modern dating and the ways it makes us all a little crazy.”
Geraldine Viswanathan and John Reynolds co-star. Brooks wrote and directed “Oh, Hi!,” with Gordon having a story by credit (she also produces). “Oh, Hi!” is screening at the 2025 Tribeca Festival June 13 and 14 before debuting in theaters this July.

Tribeca Film Festival co-founder and recent Variety cover star Jane Rosenthal hosted the annual Through Her Lens: The Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program luncheon with the legacy fashion house on June 6.
Miley Cyrus attended just hours before her world premiere of “Something Beautiful,” The project places the pop-music icon in the director’s chair along with Jacob Bixenman and Brendan Walter.
“Throughout my career, my story has been told from so many lenses outside of myself and from so many perspectives outside of myself. I’ve been shot by so many photographers and directors and never been able to actually get behind the lens and see myself in the way that I do,” Cyrus told Variety on the carpet. “That’s something that makes it feel like really special and really intimate because I’ve never really gotten to actually tell my story in a way that really is this first person.

The future of Laid on Peacock has been in limbo since December 2024 when the Stephanie Hsu and Zosia Mamet series premiered on the streamer. Since then, viewers have been wondering whether a second season was in store for the comedy, and now we finally have that answer.
Laid has officially been cancelled at Peacock, meaning there won't be a season 2. An exact reason wasn't given, though Deadline reports that the show didn't make it into the Nielsen streaming rankings, so the viewership numbers more than likely played a role in the decision.
Despite the low viewership numbers, the comedy series does have a 93% score audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. I mean, that's only based on 28 views so I guess that further proves the low streaming numbers. No offense. But still. The majority of those users gave the show a high score on Rt. Though I think it's overrated, so I honestly saw this cancellation coming.

It's another heartbreaking day for lovers of television as Peacock has just killed off one of its most promising shows. Laid, a romantic-comedy drama starring Everything Everywhere All At Once star Stephanie Hsu, has been cancelled on the streamer after just one season. The series premiered with all eight episodes on Peacock on December 19. Laid was a hit with audiences and the critics as well, scoring a tidy 93% Rotten Tomatoes score, but the numbers weren't quite enough for the streamer. In addition to starring, Hsu also served as executive producer, as did the show's writers and co-showrunners, Sally Bradford McKenna and Nahnatchka Khan.
Peacock has not released an official statement explaining its decision; however, Deadline, which broke the news, reports that the series was unable to draw as much attention as other shows from the same creators. Also, its streaming numbers paled against expectations. Many fans would, however, argue that...

It's going to be a one-season run for Laid, the romantic comedy series on Peacock. Despite having a strong cast with nearly unanimous praise from critics, the show won't be getting another season on the NBCUniversal platform.
Per Deadline, Laid has officially been canceled by Peacock after one season. The show premiered on the streaming platform on Dec. 19 with all eight episodes made available to watch simultaneously. Its response was stellar, as the show holds a score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the show did not become a major streaming hit, as it didn't crack Nielsen's top 10 list, nor did it create substantial buzz on social media. It's not yet known if the show will be shopped around to other streaming platforms for a potential rescue.

In a shocking turn of events, Peacock canceled Stephanie Hsu’s hit romantic comedy show after just 1 season despite overwhelmingly positive reviews. Though she’s better known for her onscreen roles, Stephanie Hsu started her career acting as Karen the Computer in Spongebob the Musical and Christine Canigula in Be More Chill, both of which showed the actor’s comedic chops.
Onscreen, Hsu grew to fame for playing Joy Wang and Jobu Tupaki in Everything Everywhere All At Once, for which she gained a 2023 Oscar nomination. The movie might not traditionally be considered a comedy, but the character of Jobu Tupaki inserts dark humor into the beautifully bizarre storyline.
Falling in line with her Broadway debut and her breakout movie role, Hsu has gained a reputation for being a top-notch comedy actor. Her role in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel added some levity to the drama. She stands out in the...

Another day, another under-appreciated comedy gem gets tossed to the wayside by its streaming home. That's right, the Stephanie Hsu-starring (and executive-produced!) comedy series, Laid, has been canceled after a single season on Peacock. The show was a hit with critics (including our own Greg Archer) and fans who tuned in — gaining it a 93% on the Tomatometer, which seems a big low, all things considered. Unfortunately, praise was not enough to convince Peacock to give the series another season, which is a shame for anyone who watched the show.
The news, which was first reported by Deadline, comes at a time when fewer and fewer comedy series are getting the green light. Laid followed Hsu's Ruby Yao as she —over the course of the series' 8 episodes — realized that all of her former lovers were dying in unusual ways, forcing her to confront her past (and subsequent sex partners) in order to move forward.

Peacock has canceled “Laid” after one season.
The series starred Stephanie Hsu as Ruby Yao, a woman who learns that her former sexual partners have begun dying off in the order in which she slept with them. With the help of her best friend and roommate Aj (Zosia Mamet), she works to figure out what’s causing the deaths and works to warn the ones who are still living.
Along with Hsu and Mamet, the cast included Zosia Mamet, Michael Angarano and Tommy Martinez as series regulars, plus recurring and guest stars including Andre Hyland, Elizabeth Bowen, Olivia Holt, Ryan Pinkston, David Denman, Susan Berger, Kate Berlant, John Early, Ettore “Big E” Ewen, Chloe Fineman, Simu Liu, Finneas O’Connell and Alexandra Shipp.

In September 2023, months into both the actors’ and writers’ strikes, something of a “happening” took shape at Venice Beach’s Electric Lodge, a multidisciplinary arts and community center that hosts everything from taekwondo classes to live performances. For a few weeks, the venue also played home to something increasingly rare: a new play from David Mamet.
Over the years, the controversial Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright has drawn ire for both his political leanings and the content of his work, both on stage and screen. The play, titled “Henry Johnson,” was viewed by some as a reaction to those reactions, by others as a timeless parable. Set across four scenes, the film (and play) follows Jonigkeit’s Henry, whose life is upended after he participates in a heinous crime, is sent to jail for his misdeeds, and struggles to find meaning in all of it.

Two years after staging his newest play, David Mamet is returning to the big screen with a brand-new cinematic adaptation of the work. “Henry Johnson,” Mamet’s first film since his 2013 Al Pacino-starring Phil Spector TV movie, reunites the full original cast from the stage version, including Shia Labeouf, Evan Jonigkeit, Chris Bauer, and Dominic Hoffman. The film’s first trailer, an IndieWire exclusive available below, hints at the acidic drama to come.
Per the film’s official synopsis, “Henry Johnson” is “a drama that follows the title character (Jonigkeit) as he navigates his search for a moral center, after an act of compassion upends his life. Looking to authority figures he encounters along the way — including his eventual cellmate, Gene (Labeouf) —Henry’s journey leads him down a road of manipulation and ethical uncertainty.”

Deli Boys season 2 gets an encouraging update from executive producer Jenni Konner. Created by Abdullah Saeed, the story centers on two Pakistani-American brothers after the death of their father and the unveiling of his criminal enterprise. The ten-episode comedy recently premiered on Hulu to positive reviews, dropping all of its episodes in a binge-release model. The cast of Deli Boys includes Asif Ali, Saagar Shaikh, Poorna Jagannathan, Alfie Fuller, and Brian George.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Konner was asked about whether there are plans for Deli Boys season 2. It is probably no accident that among Matthew Shear’s acting credits are no less than four movies directed by New York filmmaker extraordinaire Noah Baumbach, or that one of his most recent is another angst-ridden Jewish comedy, Between the Temples. Clearly he has spent his downtime on those sets soaking up the atmosphere and the comedic beats in preparation for his writing-directing debut Fantasy Life, premiering at SXSW today in the Narrative Feature competition.
Assembling a dream cast of actors who know how to deliver this kind of New York Jewish-centric character-driven comedy that Woody Allen trademarked and others like Baumbach have also travelled in so successfully, Shear actually seems to me to be more of a modern-day Richard Benjamin who also turned into a fine filmmaker in his own right. That seems to be the trajectory here except Shear is clearly cribbing from his own life and experience with depression,...

Late Night with Seth Meyers has left a void in late-night TV recently. So what should fans expect to see tonight on NBC?
Seth Meyers and his team were off last week. The combination of the Monday holiday and recovering from the Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary special gave Meyers plenty of excuses to take some time off.
Unfortunately for fans eager to hear from Meyers, the break isn't quite over yet. There will not be a new episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers tonight, February 24.
Instead, NBC will reair the January 20 episode. Interested fans can tune in to revisit appearances by Christian Slater and Zosia Mamet.
The good news is that there remains plenty of other late-night TV show options on Monday night. The other shows will be brand-new with some big-name celebrity guests.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! welcomes Chris Pratt, Drew Carey, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Gregory Alan Isakov.

Derry Girls star Saoirse-Monica Jackson will make her New York stage premiere this spring in Irishtown.
The play, written by Ciara Elizabeth Smyth, will make its world premiere at the Irish Repertory Theatre’s Francis J. Greenburger Mainstage starting April 2, ahead of an April 13 opening night. The show, which also stars Kate Burton (Grey’s Anatomy), will play a limited Off-Broadway run through May 25.
In addition to Burton and Jackson, the play will feature Kevin Oliver Lynch (Purgatory, After Yeats), Brenda Meaney (Little Gem, Uncle Vanya), and Angela Reed (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), with voiceover work by Roger Clark (Red Dead Redemption Two).
Directed by Nicola Murphy Dubey, Irishtown follows a Dublin-based theater company that begins rehearsals for their new play, only to discover that the playwright has made the story too dark and experimental, and not Irish enough. The company decides to take matters into their own hands...

Billy Magnussen and his girlfriend Erica Firestone went on the ultimate double date last month with their friends Zosia Mamet and Evan Jonigkeit.
The group of four went on a week-long getaway to Sandals Dunn’s River in Ocho Rios, Jamaica back in January 2025.
Billy, Erica, Zosia, and Evan spent their week playing golf at Sandals Upton Estate Golf & Country Club and trying out snuba, which is a combination of snorkeling and scuba diving.
A source said they also spent time at “the resort’s spa and enjoying a cocktail at the resort’s Dunn’s Rum Club, they also explored the neighboring Dunn’s River Falls, went swimming at the Blue Hole, and visited Mystic Mountain, a rainforest adventure park.”
Billy shared a video from the golf course on Instagram.

Zosia Mamet just dropped the exciting Girls news fans have been waiting for. Okay, so it's not actual news, but for the first time, there has been a legitimate acknowledgement of bringing the hit HBO comedy series back in some form for a new edition. Mamet has been "working on" creator and star Lena Dunham to write a spinoff series about Shoshanna. Ahhh!
In a recent interview on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast with Amanda Hirsch, the host asked Mamet about the resurgence of both the show and her fan-favorite character. Over the last few years, Girls has seemingly been widely rewatched by both the millennials who watched as young adults and the new generation of 20-somethings coming of age in the 2020s.
"I'm trying to get Lena to write a Shosh spinoff," Mamet told Hirsch, who was genuinely surprised and elated by the revelation. So were all...

Warning: This article includes Major Spoilers for Laid season 1!
In Laid season 1, famous exoneree Amanda Knox makes a cameo, a decision that will delight true crime fans like the character Aj. The dark comedy show follows a 33-year-old woman named Ruby Yao, who figures out that every person she’s slept with is dying. Her best friend, Aj, uses her true crime obsession to help Ruby track the deaths on a “sex timeline” so that they can figure out what’s truly happening. Throughout the show, she repeatedly brings up that she was obsessed with true crime before it became popular and that her idol is Amanda Knox.
Knox was wrongfully arrested for killing her British roommate, Meredith Kercher, in 2007 while studying abroad in Perugia, Italy. She barely spoke the language, making it difficult for her to understand the investigators, and people pointed to her behavior after the murder as proof of her guilt.
