First-time writer/director Alex Craig Mann has combined The Breakfast Club with Dawn of the Dead for a different kind of zombie movie. Detention of the Dead is a high school zombie horror-comedy which follows a group of teenagers stuck in detention who are forced to work together when zombies invade their school. All the typical high school archetypes are present including Eddie (Jacob Zachar), a nerd in love with the head cheerleader Janet (Christa B. Allen); Brad (Jayson Blair), Janet's boyfriend and the most popular guy in school; Jimmy (Max Adler), a meathead and Brad's best friend; Willow (Alexa Nikolas), the goth girl in love with Eddie; and Ash (Justin Chon), the school stoner and local drug dealer. After barricading themselves inside the library, they start to talk about why they were in detention, confess their true feelings about each other, and bond while smoking a blunt together.

Detention of the Dead is a throwback to films of the '80s. The Breakfast Club (1985) is especially influential in director Alex Craig Mann's first film. The characters are cliches and the zombies are far from terrifying. Instead, Detention of the Dead relies on some silly comedy and high school drama to keep the film's story interesting. But, this story might not be compelling for most film fans. The film is set in Lincoln High School. Here, a zombie virus is ravaging the school's halls and classrooms. The stereotypical: jock (Jayson Blair), cheerleader (Christa B. Allen), nerd (Jacob Zachar), stoner (Justin Chon), goth girl (Alexa Nikolas) and jock #2 must battle their way to the library, because students never go there.

Do you remember all the typical garbage you had to deal with in high school? You had to wear the right clothes, hang out with the right crowd, and get all your homework done so you could pass. Playing in a much simpler fashion than last year’s Detention, Mann’s film (which is based on a play by Rob Rinow) feels like a cross between an 80s style high school dramedy and some good old self-aware zombie horror. It’s definitely the year of the zombies.

After “Warm Bodies” and “World War Z,” a fun zombie comedy sneaks into the theaters with “Detention of the Dead.”

This is a small budget zombie indie film that is a cross between “The Breakfast Club” and “Shaun of the Dead.” It follows a group of high school students stuck in detention as the zombie infection spreads outside the hall.

Latino-Review caught up with “Detention of the Dead” director Alex Craig Mann in person to discuss about the approach with the John Hughes-like story and the traditional slow moving zombie hoard. Mann also even discussed a little about possibly adapting it into a television project.

“Detention of the Dead” is in select theaters today. It is now available on-demand and digitally purchas on Amazon Instant Video, iTunes and Xbox 360.

Allen (the hot cheerleader in the movie) even landed the ABC show “Revenge” (though of course, I could be wrong). Ah FrightFest how I love thee. Yes, my annual excursion to Scotland for Glasgow FrightFest continues this year, and I couldn’t be happier! This years line-up is strong, Very strong, with plenty of variety and some great film picks by Alan, Ian, Paul and Greg. Plus the appearance of Norwegian drama Hellsfjord! Of all the films showing this year there’s one that I most excited to see – Detention of the Dead… I’ve tried my hardest to cover the film as much as possible over the past year as it looks like my “cup of tea”, so for it to show at FrightFest is awesome (although to be fair I already knew that was in the line-up). However the real big surprise is the appearance of Neil Jordan’s Byzantium in the line-up – the Scottish crowd is notoriously “blood-thirtsy” so I hope Jordan’s film isn’t too sedate for the Glasgow crowd.

A brand new one-sheet has been spotted over at the official Facebook page for 'Detention of the Dead'. The poster for the Alex Craig Mann helmed horror comedy still doesn't yet reveal any release information but its all fingers crossed to catch this sometime later this year. Tagline: "When there is no room in hell, the dead go to detention!" Alex Craig Mann's Detention of the Dead will be shambling your way this Spring! This horror comedy is set for a major release. And, the film tells a tale of high schoolers, zombies and teachers turning very ripe. This is Mann's first feature film as director and more details on the release will be announced shortly. There is the jock, the nerd, the outsiders and the pretty girl. Mann's film will focus more on the undead and bloodshed compared to the 1985 film, however. For up-and-coming filmmaker Alex Craig Mann's feature film debut Detention of the Dead (review here) he mashed up his love of all-things John Hughes with a horde of flesh-hungry zombies for a coming-of-age horror comedy unlike anything fans have ever seen before.

Recently, Dread Central had the opportunity to chat exclusively with actor-turned-director Mann about his transition to filmmaker as well as more on some of the difficulties he faced while shooting Detention of the Dead in Michigan and his experiences working with his ensemble for the flick.

The eagerly anticipated horror-comedy Detention of the Dead (review here) will be making its Los Angeles premiere this Friday, June 1st, at the Chinese 6 Theaters, beginning at 11:45 pm as part of Dances With Films 15.

Detention of the Dead is one part horror and one part comedy. A zombie pandemic effects an entire high school and the secondary character cliches (the jock, the blonde, the geek) must take their halls back. But what happens when their friends and crushes change into flesheating monsters?
