10 TV Shows With Brilliant Opening Credit Sequences
Image
A memorable opening TV credits sequence can hook the viewer within minutes, hint at settings and future plot points, and cause the intro to linger in the minds of viewers for years to come. The opening credits act as the viewer's first impression of a show, and along with the TV show's theme song, are typically the first mental association formed with a series. At some point or another, everyone has experienced their favorite show's theme getting stuck in their head, which is not only due to the music but also the visual sequence.

While the intro is intended to convey important information such as the names of the show's writers, directors, producers, cinematographers, and actors, it also serves to create visual interest. What makes for a memorable opening TV credits sequence includes beautiful cinematography, a catchy opening score, thematic relevance to the show, and some sort of unique gimmick that highlights key elements.

Dexter: Rita's Brutal Death Explained (& Why It's So Problematic)
Image
Rita's death in Dexter created a pivotal turn in the storyline, impacting Dexter's emotional journey and the show's tone. The shocking event redefined the stakes and highlighted the dangers of Dexter's double life on loved ones, but it was also somewhat problematic. Rita's demise exemplifies the "fridging" trope, reducing complex female characters to mere plot devices for male protagonists.

When the Trinity Killer killed Rita in Dexter, it made for one of the most disturbing moments in the show, and was also called out for being problematic. The series revolves around Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a forensic blood spatter analyst who leads a double life as a vigilante serial killer. Along with working alongside police, Dexter attempts to maintain the appearance of a normal life. Central to the series emotional depth and character development is Dexters relationship with Rita Bennett (Julie Benz). A mother of three and later Dexter's wife,...

Dexter Morgan Was Inspired By A Real-Life Killer: True Story Explained
Image
Dexter Morgan, a fictional serial killer, was inspired by real-life murderer Pedro Rodrigues Filho. Both characters share similar themes of dark urges, revenge, and societal benefit through their actions. The TV series Dexter is loosely based on Filho's crimes, with significant differences in plot and character details.

Michael C. Hall's Dexter Morgan in the series Dexter was inspired by a real-life murderer. The acclaimed Showtime series follows a charismatic serial killer who works as a blood splatter analyst for Miami Metro Police. The intriguing premise was first featured in a novel titled Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, published in 2004. Two years later, Showtime made the narrative into a 12-episode season in 2006. The show went on to produce 96 episodes over eight seasons, as well as one spinoff series titled Dexter: New Blood.

Despite Dexter being inspired by a real-life murderer, it is still considered a completely original narrative and a work of fiction.

Lorraine Bracco, James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, Steven Van Zandt, Dominic Chianese, Robert Iler, Michael Imperioli, Steve Schirripa, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Tony Sirico, and Aida Turturro in The Sopranos (1999)
Welcome to the fifth installment of our summer trip through "The Sopranos" season 1. When I revisited early seasons of "The Wire," as well as the whole run of "Deadwood," I did separate versions of each review for newcomers and veterans, but over time realized that the newcomers weren't commenting much, if at all, and that it therefore made sense to simply do one review. Any significant spoilers for episodes beyond the one being reviewed will be contained in a separate section at the end of the review; so long as you avoid that, and the comments, you should be fine. Thoughts on the fifth episode, "College," coming up just as soon as I find $50,000 in krugerrands and a .45 automatic while hunting for Easter eggs... Eli Roth Heading South Of Hell
Horror heavyweight Eli Roth is best known for spine-tingling flicks like Hostel and Cabin Fever, but he’s dabbled in the world of television before. Last year, Roth executive-produced all 13 episodes of Netflix’s Hemlock Grove, a show that, despite its mixed reception, has been renewed for a second season (due to drop this July). Now, with his long-anticipated The Green Inferno primed to hit theaters in September, Roth is jumping back into the small screen for South of Hell.

Roth will direct the pilot episode of the horror thriller, which is set to premiere on We tv sometime next year. It will premiere its first scripted series, legal drama The Divide, in July.

In addition to directing the pilot, Roth will executive-produce, alongside Jason Blum, Gerard Bocaccio,...

Greatest TV Pilots: Dexter, an effortlessly confident and assured debut
Dexter, Season 1, “Dexter”

Directed by Michael Cuesta

Written by by James Manos Jr.

The pilot episode of a show that you love represents a vacation in time, a chance to go back down memory lane and smile, grin or laugh at the way things once were. The awkwardness of first meetings, how different they were as people, the sense of blind wonder at what may come; it’s an oddly personal experience, rather like remembering your first day of college. Like watching old home movies, the nostalgia is mixed with embarrassment, amusement and, perhaps in small doses, regret. Even the best shows can have strange pilot episodes, full of quirks that were quickly dropped without explanation, elements that were mostly best left out, some which sadly didn’t make the transition from trial run to the full program.

What is truly remarkable about Dexter’s 2007 pilot, simply entitled “Dexter”, is...

LatinoBuzz: Lauren Velez "They Call Me La Lupe"
"They Call Me La Lupe," originally a play, with the help of acclaimed Puerto Rican actress, Lauren Velez, has generated enough money on Kickstarter.com to begin film production. Most notable for her role on Showtime’s Emmy award-winning series, Dexter, she has become the first Hispanic celebrity to raise over $100,000 on the website for creative projects. Finally she will get to fulfill her dream of portraying La Lupe, the Cuban singer, who was a dynamic inspiration to Velez as a child.

Lauren on her accomplishment with Kickstarter.com

Someone is always going to be the first, but I just hope that it’s the beginning of something bigger. We need the Latino community continuing to support Latino projects. Kickstarter.com empowers people to support something they believe in. They give the community an opportunity to really show up, and put their money where their mouth is, so to speak.

With an already demanding career how did she reach her goal?

My nature is if you give me a challenge, I’m just going to take it on. Kickstarter is really a full-time job. Juggling the finish to Dexter's seventh season, currently airing on Sundays on Showtime, was intense. It seemed almost impossible initially to raise that kind of money in such a short amount of time. But with the help of executive producer Lee Hernandez, and Dexter creator James Manos Jr., the mark of $100,000 to create the movie was hit Oct. 26th. Also several key investors, helped jump-start the campaign when they were willing to match donations made by the public. It is really, really kind of fascinating, because I feel like the Latin voice is starting to collect.

La Lupe, was a famous Cuban singer whose strong personality caused Cuba's leader Fidel Castro to exile her to the United States. How did Lupe impact Velez?

When I was a kid, I heard her music, and I remember being really struck by the sound of her voice and how it made me feel, I felt immediately connected to her. About 10 years ago, I started actively working on trying to bring her story to life, and it started out as a one-woman show, and I got together with James Manos Jr. and he wrote the screen play. Since then, we've been working on it to make a film.

With all her hard work in bringing La Lupe's story to life, Lauren has plenty to look forward to

I’m fulfilling a dream! It’s just an incredible opportunity to play this character, who’s unlike anybody you’ve ever seen, Latina or not. She’s just an extraordinary character to portray. I can’t wait to start living her! She is a mini hurricane. Misunderstood, uncompromising, and unwilling to play by anyone else’s rules. A black Latina in the ‘60s and ‘70s, made La Lupe, a world of trouble because she was in the right place at the wrong time…so ahead of her time.

On going indie

While it would be nice to get the multi-million dollar contracts from some studio to get made, my feeling is that isn’t how it’s going to happen. Shooting guerrilla style, I have an excitement I haven't felt in a long time about making a film.

Currently, in the pre-production stage, what are Lauren's final aspirations?

I hope people love the film, and I hope that they love the character and get to know her the same way I do.

The film is her only focus right now, as season eight of Dexter does not begin shooting until January. She is also looking forward to being home in Spanish Harlem once Dexter is finally done shooting. Velez emphasized her thanks to all who supported “They Call Me La Lupe,” saying she was overwhelmed with the support, and calling the entire process “extraordinary, beautiful, and touching.”...

Michael C. Hall in Dexter (2006)
Police Captain María Laguerta will soon be busy following Dexter’s blood-soaked trail when the seventh season of the Showtime hit drama "Dexter" premieres this week. But Puerto Rican actress Lauren Vélez, who plays the ruthless Laguerta, used the time between seasons to work on a project centered around another ambitious Cuban woman.

Vélez, a long time admirer of 1960s Cuban singer and exile Guadalupe “La Lupe” Victoria Yolí Raymond, will star and help produce "They Call Me La Lupe,” a biopic of the artist written by Luis Caballero and James Manos Jr. (creator of “Dexter”). To bring the film to the big screen -- also set to feature Dominican actress Judy Reyes (“Scrubs”) -- the Boricua and a team of producers are trying to raise $100,000 through Kickstarter, a popular social platform used to fund creative projects.

In an exclusive interview with The Huffington Post, Vélez talked about the reasons...

Irvine has 'Great Expectations,' Anna Faris Lands Paramount Deal and Gosling for 'Lone Ranger'?
Ryan Gosling seems to be making a transition away from the indie work we've come to expect from him with his leading role in the upcoming Logan's Run remake and now The Wrap reports that may continue into a starring gig alongside Johnny Depp in Disney's The Lone Ranger. Gosling has entered negotiations for the role of the titular masked lawman, while Depp was previously cast as his Native American friend Tonto. Gore Verbinski (Rango, the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy) will direct for producer Jerry Bruckheimer with a 2014 release in mind.

Variety brings minor The Dark Night Rises casting news, with Nestor Carbonell in negotiations to reprise his role as the Mayor of Gotham. Exciting, right?

Deadline reports Michael C. Hall and "Dexter" developer James Manos Jr. will collaborate on the indie feature Love, Scotch and Death after the show wraps its sixth season. Hall will play a character based on writer-director Manos,...

Michael C. Hall
'Dexter' Star and Creator Team Up for Feature Film
Michael C. Hall
For five seasons, Michael C. Hall has been slashing, stabbing and suffocating his way through the murderous Showtime dramedy "Dexter," easily one of the network's biggest hits in ages. To say he "kills in the part" is an understatement.

Now with the six season of "Dexter" wrapping up, Hall is eyeing potential big screen projects for his hiatus from the show -- and he might aim to replicate some of the magic he found on the show. This November, Hall will team up with "Dexter" creator James Manos Jr. on the indie film "Love, Scotch and Death," which, Deadline mentions, stars a character not that unlike Manos.

Manos previously won an Emmy for his work on "The Sopranos" before writing a few episodes of "The Shield and eventually adapting Jeff Lindsay's "Dexter" books for TV. "Love, Scotch and Death" will be his first foray into film writing and he'll also make his directing debut.

James Manos Jr. to Direct Love, Scotch and Death Starring Michael C. Hall and Vera Farmiga
James Manos Jr. is probably best known as a creator of the Showtime series Dexter, but we’ll soon have a chance to see him directing Love, Scotch and Death, project that already has Michael C. Hall and Vera Farmiga attached to star.

We’re actually talking about the semi-autobiographical film that was written by Manos himself, originally titled The Slow and Complete Discompensation of Jim Manos.

According to Deadline, the story will “cover a rather bizarre week in the man’s life. After returning from a stressful vacation, he discovers his parents have died of natural causes together in bed, which forces him to navigate his way past an unsympathetic funeral director, his bewildered children and manic wife, an eccentric priest and some over-sexed neighbors. There is also an arrest for assault and the death of his wife’s beloved dog.”

We are definitely interested in this project, and...

Michael C. Hall
Michael C. Hall & Vera Farmiga To Share 'Love, Scotch And Death'
Michael C. Hall
Michael C. Hall has had no problem being a TV star. He broke out in "Six Feet Under" and currently leads the popular "Dexter," but his moves into film have been less successful. "Gamer" was terrible and "Peep World" never lived up to the promise it had on paper. But he's hoping that James Manos Jr., the man who adapted Jeff Lindsay's "Dexter," will have the key to break him into something worthwhile. Deadline reports that Hall and Vera Farmiga are set to star in "Love, Scotch and Death," a wacky sounding, semi-autobiographical film. Manos wrote and originally titled the…...

Michael C. Hall And Vera Farmiga Starring In Dexter Creator's Directorial Debut
Charlie Kaufman apparently no longer has the market cornered for meta, self-referencing screenplays about an eponymous screenwriter falling apart. Dexter creator James Manos Jr. is giving a similar kind of story a go, setting forth on his directorial and feature writing debut with Love, Scotch and Death. His Dexter leading man Michael C. Hall will star in the film that was once titled The Slow And Complete Decompensation of Jim Manos-- and yes, that's where the Charlie Kaufman similarities start to come in. According to Deadline Vera Farmiga will also star in the film, which focuses on a character named Jim Manos in the middle of a very, very strange week. I'll just let the Deadline explanation do the duty here: After returning from a stressful vacation, he discovers his parents have died of natural causes together in bed, which forces him to navigate his way past an unsympathetic funeral...

Michael C. Hall and Vera Farmiga Need Some 'Love, Scotch & Death'
The praise and accolades for the bloody fantastic Showtime series "Dexter" did wonders for actor Michael C. Hall, and now he and the series creator James Manos Jr. are collaborating on a project for the big screen. Deadline reports the duo will team up for an indie called Love, Scotch and Death that features Hall playing a character based on Manos himself as he endured a stressful week filled with unimaginable mishaps. The film will also have the talents of Vera Farmiga who has also been cast as well. Manos used to call the screenplay The Slow And Complete Decompensation of Jim Manos, and you can find out why below. The hellish week for Manos begins upon his return from an already stressful vacation to find that his parents have died of natural causes together in bed. In the aftermath, Manos must navigate his way past an unsympathetic funeral director,...

Dexter: The Top 20 Most Shocking Moments
For four years and running, Showtime has had us, get this, actually rooting for a serial killer. Whether through the sheer acting prowess of Michael C. Hall, the great writing of the show’s creators Jeff Lindsay and James Manos Jr., the fantastic supporting cast – including Angel Batista (David Zayas), Rita Bennett (Julie Benz) and Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington) – or the great guests – Miguel Prado (Jimmy Smits) and Arthur Mitchell (John Lithgow) – Dexter has been able to do just that. Given, Dexter kills by a code. He kills because he was born in blood, witnessing the brutal murder of his mother when he was only an infant. He kills because a Dark Passenger requires him too. But by following the code of his father, Harry (James Remar), he only kills those who deserve it – wretched criminals who have slipped through the grasp of the justice system. So ...

[DVD Picks of the Week] Aug. 17th
It’s time once again to remind all of you that DVDs have come out and that I’m ridiculously addicted. Are you? Then this is what you need:

Grab ‘Em Right Away

Dexter: Season Four

Creator: James Manos Jr.

Starring: Michael C. Hall, Julie Benz, John Lithgow, Jennifer Carpenter, David Zayas, Desmond Harrington & Keith Carradine

Why should you buy this? Because Dexter remains to be one of the most fun shows on TV. What if a serial killer only killed bad guys, and worked for the police? That’s Dexter. This time around he has his eyes set on someone special. There’s a killer loose in Miami who disguises his murders as everyday tragedies. This way he avoids all the trouble of having to dispose of the body and the police never investigate. This is the trinity killer. Dexter knows he should kill him, but he thinks...
