"We are worth more when we are addicted, polarized, and misinformed... than we are if we are living, breathing, free citizens." Neon revealed a second trailer for 2073, a frightening doc about climate change and the destructive future we're headed towards. Now set for a release in December in the US. It's the latest documentary film from Oscar-winning filmmaker Asif Kapadia, known for Senna, Amy, Diego Maradona, and others. 2073 is a hybrid doc - featuring a live-action sci-fi segment starring Samantha Morton living in a dystopian future ruined by climate change & authoritarianism (the year 2073); along with doc segments showing how we could get there, giving clear-eyed facts about the rise of right-wing authoritarianism and libertarianism worldwide – which won't stop climate change. "Through a genre-busting mix of archive and drama Ghost witnesses the terrifying threats facing us: a Democratic recession, the rise of neo-fascism, the Climate Disaster and the intrusion of surveillance technology.

Asif Kapadia is known for his critically acclaimed documentary films profiling famous figures like athletes Ayrton Senna and Diego Maradona. In 2073, Kapadia takes a bold step into speculative fiction with his vision of what might lie in store for our warming planet if current crises continue unabated.
The film flits between a gloomy portrayal of life on Earth in the year 2073 and sobering glimpses at our present-day world, linking real-life challenges to the director’s imagined societal collapse.
In the future sequences, we find Samantha Morton’s character eking out an uneasy existence in the ruins of San Francisco. Now known as New San Francisco, the city is an arid, heavily-policed wasteland where the privileged elite float above it all in sky-high towers.
Morton’s Ghost is haunted by past trauma and the deteriorating state of a world battered by climate change, shrinking freedoms, and unbridled corporate control. Through her eyes and voiceovers,...

Giuseppe Tornatore’s “Cinema Paradiso” is and will always be cherished by cinephiles. After all, it beautifully captures their deep love for cinema and the art of filmmaking in the most heartfelt way. It shows a child from a small Italian town falling in love with cinema, because of his friendship with a local film projectionist. He gets to watch all kinds of movies and experiences the madness and chaos it entails. “Cinema Paradiso” opens in an era when people exclusively used film reels to make movies. The child protagonist sees the film’s material change from flammable to fire-resistant as the art advances into different eras.
The kid, Toto, grows up witnessing the changes in censorship in cinema and builds a personal connection with both sublime and obscene. Back then, films were integral to the social fabric of a community. So, he learns cinema’s importance as a medium...

Senna and Amy filmmaker Asif Kapadia turns to dystopian filmmaking with 2073, starring Samantha Morton. Here’s our review:
Best known for his award-winning documentaries Senna, Amy and Diego Maradona, director Asif Kapadia has made something quite different with 2073 – a feature that blends dystopian fiction with archive footage to deliver a stark warning about humanity’s present course.
Samantha Morton provides a haunted-looking focal point as Ghost, a denizen of the dystopian New San Francisco in the titular year 2073. Although remaining silent in the film itself, Morton provides a soulful voiceover as Kapadia cuts from footage of her scrambling around the remains of a department store – her refuge from the militarised state patrolling the rest of the city – and sequences that show what led to our planet’s collapse.
Kapadia has previously said he was inspired by Chris Marker’s 1962 short film La Jetee when he made 2073, though in practice its...

An overlong, overly lightweight tale of Poland’s two-time Olympic champion Jerzy Kulej is saved by a rallying last half hour
This is a glossily shot but overlong biopic of two-time Olympic gold-winning boxer Jerzy Kulej that tries to position him as a kind of errant bad boy folk hero; a kind of Polish George Best or Diego Maradona. But as it takes place in the late 60s, when Poland wasn’t exactly swinging but very much wanted to, Xawery Żuławski’s film mostly treats him with a weird indulgent levity that over-cranks the performances and neuters the stakes.
Returning from the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Kulej (Tomasz Włosok) is a national hero. Under pressure from his wife Helena (Michalina Olszańska) to better their lot, he cuts a deal with his police superior Col Sikorski (Cold War’s Tomasz Kot) for a new apartment in return for becoming a poster boy for the People’s Republic.

UK filmmaker Asif Kapadia has “unequivocally” apologised for social media reposts about the Israel-Gaza conflict that caused documentary charity The Grierson Trust to withdraw his patronage.
In a statement, Kapadia said, “I’m mortified by the hurt and offence that some of my retweets have caused. I now understand that they will be seen by many as antisemitic, or in the case of one even justifying violence. That was not my intention.

Noémie Merlant found she had a lot in common with her character in Emmanuelle.
Her involvement in Audrey Diwan‘s new film, in the titular role, was so influential that she says it helped her re-examine her own relationship with female pleasure. “Like Emmanuelle, I was completely disconnected with my body,” the French actress tells The Hollywood Reporter.
With its world premiere opening the San Sebastian Film Festival Friday night, Emmanuelle has received buzz for its graphic content. Diwan’s movie, starring Naomi Watts (Mullholland Drive, Birdman), Will Sharpe (The White Lotus) and Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things), is inspired by Emmanuelle Arsan’s erotic novel — and this eroticism certainly helms the project.
Emmanuelle focuses on a woman on a business trip to Hong Kong working with a luxury hotel group. Searching for a lost pleasure, she seeks her arousal in experiences with some of the hotel’s guests. One of them,...

In “Amy,” Asif Kapadia’s Oscar-winning gut-punch about pop icon Amy Winehouse (and to a lesser extent in biographical docs “Senna” and “Diego Maradona” too), the British director employs an emotional rhythm by which his subject’s tragic end seems foredestined right from the start. Perhaps “2073,” his new hybrid docufiction is a natural expansion of that impulse — a blend of archival footage, CG enhancement and speculative fiction that applies similar retroactive dismay to a cautionary tale about a near-future dystopia, and the current rising tide of everything-is-terrible that may bring it about.
Unfortunately, what is highly effective as a biographical rise-and-fall tactic is far less so as a means to make a grand statement about imminent societal collapse. It’s not clear quite who is going to be galvanized into action to avert catastrophe when according to “2073,” almost everything that will lead to civilization’s demise — from AI to climate...

The documentary-maker loses some nuance but he is tackling big issues, as Samantha Morton picks through post-apocalyptic ruins in a sombre futurist reverie
Asif Kapadia takes on big subjects in a vehement drama-doc fantasy of just 85 minutes: climate change, corporate fascism, the global erosion of democracy. And if the result feels occasionally strident, or redundant, or choir-preaching, then maybe that is just a function of the vast and implacable importance of what he’s talking about.
This is the elephant in the room, the insidious gradual diminution of our freedoms, and addressing it head-on like this (which is probably the only way to address it) is arguably to sacrifice subtlety and nuance and the more calibrated filmic language that has made Kapadia’s films, about pop-culture icons such as Diego Maradona and Amy Winehouse, more approachable. And yes, those films worked better on their own terms, but...

Despite having a wealth of experience directing narrative film and television with the likes of Mindhunter and The Warrior, Asif Kapadia is almost definitely best known for his work as a documentarian on films such as Amy, Senna, Diego Maradona, and, most recently, tennis close-up Federer: Twelve Final Days. With his latest directorial effort however, sci-fi thriller 2073, Kapadia is looking to cross the streams, blurring the boundaries between narrative and non-fiction filmmaking to paint a sobering portrait of the dystopia that awaits us if we continue on our current post-Brexit, present Putin and Trump and Milei spearheaded course. Led by Samantha Morton, Naomi Ackie, and Hector Hewie, 2073 — if the fascinating first trailer is anything to go by — looks quite unlike anything else we've seen this year. Check it out below:

Neon has revealed the trailer and poster for 2073, from Academy Award-winning director Asif Kapadia and starring Samantha Morton. 2073 is an urgent, unshakable vision of a dystopic future that could very well be our own.
It’s the year 2073, and the worst fears of modern life have been realized. Surveillance drones fill the burnt orange skies, and militarized police roam the wrecked streets while survivors hide away underground, struggling to remember a free and hopeful existence.
In this ingenious mixture of visionary science fiction and speculative nonfiction, filmmaker Asif Kapadia (Amy) transports us to a future foreshadowed by the terrifying realities of our present moment.
Two-time Academy Award nominee Samantha Morton plays a survivor besieged by nightmare visions of the past—a past that happens to be our present, visualized through contemporary footage interconnecting today’s global crises of authoritarianism, unchecked big tech, inequality, and global climate change.

A Roger Federer documentary directed by Asif Kapadia seems like something that can’t go wrong in any way. Federer: Twelve Final Days centers upon the climax of the tennis legend’s career. Kapadia co-directs it, along with video producer Joe Sabia. In this very personal documentary, the camera follows Federer right from the moment when he’s about to officially call it a day, to his final professional match in the Laver Cup. Kapadia is a master when it comes to sports documentaries, but this one doesn’t quite pack the punch of “Sena” or “Diego Maradona.” But it’s still very much watchable, thanks to the man himself. Let’s take a closer look at it.
What Happens in the Documentary?
Is there a name bigger than Roger Federer in the game of tennis? Probably not. Inarguably the greatest player of our time (maybe ever), Federer is a...

‘Federer: Twelve Final Days’ Review: A Partial Backstage Pass to the Tennis Great’s Retirement Party
In his classic 1994 essay “How Tracy Austin Broke My Heart,” David Foster Wallace pondered why so many athlete memoirs — and tennis player memoirs in particular — fail to provide sports fans with what they really want to know. What does it feel like to fail in front of millions of people? How does a human being handle such intense pressure? What actually goes through one’s mind in those do-or-die moments where the difference between eternal glory and lifelong disappointment is one tiny miscalculation or half-second’s hesitation? Maybe, Wallace eventually concludes, the answer to that last question is “nothing much at all,” and “the real secret behind top athletes’ genius may be as esoteric and obvious and dull and profound as silence itself.”
In his two previous sports documentaries, “Senna” and “Diego Maradona,” filmmaker Asif Kapadia has gone a great distance toward disproving Wallace’s thesis, using ingeniously edited archival...

Oscar-winning filmmaker Asif Kapadia has revealed that he uses the skillset he previously perfected making commercials to get his feature-length projects across the line.
Kapadia, who made his name in the film world with a trilogy of biography documentaries Senna (2010), the Oscar-winning Amy (2015), and Diego Maradona (2019), was speaking at Cannes Lions, when he explained his commercial mindset:
“The work I’ve done in commercials has helped me make the films I make. Traditionally with a movie or drama, you write a script, spend years developing it, but because of the number of pitches you have to do when you meet people [making commercials], or you have a script and you have to visualize it, cut a really interesting deck or a sizzle reel, all of those tricks I learned while doing the odd commercial, I bring into movies.

Roger Federer’s Poignant Farewell To Pro Tennis Documented In ‘Twelve Final Days’ – Tribeca Festival
In men’s tennis, as in other sports, there is constant debate over which player qualifies as the Greatest of All Time. Djokovic with his unprecedented 24 Grand Slam wins? Nadal with his astonishing 14 French Open victories? Federer, the first man to win 20 Grand Slams? Or perhaps a player from an earlier era – Rod Laver – who swept all four Grand Slam titles in a calendar year, not once but twice?
The Goat debate in tennis will never be resolved. But there is broad consensus on one thing: no one has ever played the game with as much grace, as much beauty, with such effortless shot making and economy of form as the man from Basel, Switzerland – Roger Federer. It was, therefore, with enormous sadness but heartfelt appreciation that tennis fans greeted the news in 2022 that Federer, bowing to time, would retire from the sport he defined for more than 20 years.

Asif Kapadia has co-directed 12 Final Days with Joe Sabia, a highly-anticipated look at tennis legend Roger Federer’s retirement.
A great piece has popped up at Variety, charting the behind the scenes story of how acclaimed documentary maker Asif Kapadia became involved with the soon to release 12 Final Days. Kapadia is no stranger to making brilliant documentaries focused upon the careers and lives of sporting legends (see Senna and Diego Maradona) but as the piece explains, he came onto this project when Sabia was already deep into post-production.
The film releases next week on Amazon Prime Video here in the UK and given Federer’s enduring popularity as a tennis icon, we’d imagine that there’ll be no shortage of viewers waiting to see it. Given that Luca Guadagnino’s brilliant tennis drama, Challengers is now available to watch at home as well, might we humbly recommend what might...

Roger Federer offers a tearful goodbye to a celebrated tennis career in the trailer for Asif Kapadia’s feature sports documentary Federer: Twelve Final Days, which dropped on Monday ahead of a June 10 world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.
As the curtain comes down on his 24 years of competitive play in professional tennis, Federer struggles to contain his emotions in what the doc’s producers call a home video never intended for public viewing. “I thought until this morning I had emotions in check, but I can feel it coming up,” a vulnerable Federer says at one point in the feature documentary as his final tournament match approaches.

The Motion Picture Association ratings board gave Zack Snyder’s sci-fi war film Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver and the Blumhouse horror production Imaginary PG-13 ratings this week, but they also sat through a movie that gave them some rougher material to sit through: the psychological horror film Immaculate, which reunites Sydney Sweeney – whose credits include Euphoria, the recent romantic comedy release Anyone but You, and the upcoming Sony Marvel movie Madame Web – with Michael Mohan, who directed her in the erotic thriller The Voyeurs. Immaculate is set to reach theatres on March 22nd, and it now sports an R rating for strong and bloody violent content, grisly images, nudity and some language.
Scripted by Andrew Lobel, Immaculate sees Sweeney taking on the role of Cecilia, a woman of devout faith who is offered a fulfilling new role at an illustrious Italian convent. Her warm welcome to the picture-perfect...

Madrid — Greater than fiction. Viewed by an estimated 5 billion, the most watched event in TV history, and the climax of the most popular sport on earth, no achievement compares in epic terms to Argentina’s victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Yet soccer, as Atletico de Madrid manager Diego Simeone famously has it, is played match by match. It is won moment by moment. No doc feature to date perhaps captures the ever evolving drama of Argentina’s campaign – the flux and flow of psychological advantage, the huge emotional stakes, the roll call of protagonists, and the multiple narratives of universal resonance emerging moment by moment – than “Soccer Soul” (“Elijo Creer”), narrated by Ricardo Darín, star of Oscar-winning “The Secret in Their Eyes” and dropped by HBO Max on Jan. 11 in Argentina and the rest of Latin America.
It begins with the defining moment of the whole 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Sports has signed what has been described as a new “strategic partnership” with Italy’s top-flight soccer league Serie A.
The deal, which was announced yesterday via Roc Nation’s social accounts, has been forged to enhance the Italian league’s reach in North America. The two entities said they will partner to raise the league’s awareness in North America by engaging existing and new fans through digital content, marketing activations, and events.
Roc Nation and Serie A have had a working partnership since 2019. In 2020 at the height of the covid pandemic, the agency inked a deal with leading Serie A side AC Milan to host an event to raise support for key workers. The event was hosted by DJ Khaled and featured performances from artists such as Alicia Keys and Kelly Rowland. All proceeds went to charity. The pair later announced a full partnership.

On Monday, Oscar-winning documentarian Asif Kapadia told a roomful of Cph:dox Conference attendees that he might have never directed a nonfiction film had it not been for Harvey Weinstein “killing” his first narrative feature film, “The Warrior.”
“The Warrior,” starring the late Irrfan Khan, is about a mercenary directed by an evil warlord to wreak havoc on a rural village in Rajasthan by forcing the poor inhabitants to pay taxes. In 2003, the film won two BAFTAs for outstanding debut and outstanding British Film. But according to Kapadia, the film garnered no attention outside of England due to Weinstein, who bought worldwide rights – excluding the U.K. – in 2001.
“I was flown out to New York to meet Weinstein, and everyone was saying how great it was that the film had sold to Miramax,” Kapadia said. “I remember saying why I did not feel good about (the deal).”

Khan’s creation for English National Ballet is filmed by Kapadia, and has an ambiguous intensity that should interest audiences beyond dance fans
Asif Kapadia returns with something unlike his previous acclaimed films … but maybe not utterly unlike. Kapadia has become known for intense documentary studies of agonised public figures including Ayrton Senna, Amy Winehouse and Diego Maradona, for whom the glare of attention, and the claustrophobic crush of public adulation, was a kind of addictive ordeal. There are points of similarity in this new, fascinating and perplexingly ambiguous film, something without a clear story, but which admits of any number of readings.
Creature is a filmed theatre project, capturing Akram Khan’s English National Ballet work, also entitled Creature, starring the charismatic dancer Jeffrey Cirio as the Creature, thrillingly athletic and physical, every muscle and tendon visible. The Creature is apparently kept captive in some remote army research unit-slash-prison in the snowy wastes,...

The director of Amy, who’s never watched a ballet, has adapted a dystopian sci-fi piece by the choreographer, who’s never made a film. They discuss art, myths, and why Bruce Lee connects them as much as their south Asian roots
In the opening scene of Creature, a new film based on an English National Ballet production at Sadler’s Wells two years ago, a man appears out of nowhere, writhing, squirming, twitching. He is not in agony, but suffering from something possibly worse: bewilderment. When he walks, he loses his footing. It’s a ballet turned upside down; instead of rising to the air in an elegant saute, the dancer flounders uncomfortably on the ground. Creature, as the nameless protagonist is known, has been transplanted to an entirely unfamiliar environment – a polar research station – where he is being subjected to an experiment to test the limits of the human body to endure cold,...

Brazilian football legend Pelé passed away at the age of 82 on December 29, 2022. The sad news came less than two weeks after Lionel Messi held aloft the trophy at the Qatar 2022 Word Cup, eliminating any doubt that he deserves his place in the conversation about who is the greatest footballer of all time. Yet for some, the Emir's insistence on honoring the Argentine captain with the traditional bisht was an unwelcome reminder of the controversial venue for the tournament, while his compatriot Diego Maradona's legacy will always be tainted by the "Hand of God." Meanwhile, Pelé remains synonymous with the world's favorite sport at its most exuberant and uninhibited.Although it's been over 50 years since he last played for the Seleção, Pelé in the brilliant gold and blue of Brazil at the 1970 World Cup, embracing a teammate and punching the air with joy, is one of football's most iconic images.

Rio de Janeiro, Dec 30 (Ians) Tributes flowed for Brazilian football legend Pele following his death from cancer at the age of 82.
Pele’s passing dominated news headlines in Brazil and across South America on Friday.
“Pele showed the power of sport and set a new limit to fame,” the Folha de S.Paulo newspaper said, referring to his status as an icon of the 20th century.
It also highlighted Pele’s role in temporarily halting Nigeria’s civil conflict as the warring parties signed a two-day ceasefire in 1969 to accommodate a friendly match featuring the famous No. 10.
“The superstar enchanted with his football stopped wars and changed the game forever,” Folha de S.Paulo’s Juca Kfouri wrote.
The newspaper praised Pele’s ability to maintain impossibly high standards over a professional career that started in his mid-teens and extended until his mid-30s.
“During his 20-year career, teams changed.
