Just Like You, The Stars Of ‘The Residence’ Were Surprised By Who The Killer Was: “Shocked”
Image
Spoiler Alert: The story includes a detail from the Season 1 finale of Netflix’s The Residence.

The official description for Netflix’s comedic whodunit The Residence reads: “132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One disastrous State Dinner.”

While not quite 157, the series examined about a dozen or so suspects in the murder of Chief White House Usher A.B. Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito), including the Usher’s deputy, a chef, a pastry chef, an engineer, a maid, an Australian diplomat, an intruder, the President’s brother as well as the Commander In Chief’s chief adviser.

In the end, it was the President’s social secretary, Lilly Schumacher, played by Molly Griggs, who was revealed as the killer.

“Lilly is definitely a big personality and annoying to A.B. but funny. “Molly walked that line really well, and I found that all very satisfying,” The Residence creator Paul William Davies told Deadline.

No One On The Set Of Indiana Jones Was Safe From The Pythons
Image
"Raiders of the Lost Ark" remains the best Indiana Jones film partly due to its very real sense of danger. According to John Rhys-Davies, who played Indy's sidekick Sallah, director Steven Spielberg "was making it up as he goes along. The script was endless pages of action description. A lot of the dialogue was (improvised) by Steven; Steven and Harrison [Ford]; or Steven, Harrison and myself." Indeed, one of the most famous scenes in "Raiders" was improvised by Ford, wherein he shoots stuntman Terry Richards' swordsman during the Cairo marketplace scene.

But while the spontaneous nature of filming "Raiders" lent the film an air of excitement and danger, it also made for a literally dangerous shoot, to the extent that Spielberg was amazed Ford's stunt team made it through the production alive. The director has written about his remorse over allowing Ford to perform many of the stunts himself and...

The Fi Hall of Fame: Anatomy of a Great Film Score – ‘Psycho’
Image
Film Independent is currently in the middle of a Matching Campaign to raise support for the next 30 years of filmmaker support. All donations make before or on September 15 will be doubled—dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000. To kick off the campaign, we’re re-posting a few of our most popular blogs. Thanks to author Aaron Gilmartin.

Last week in our Know the Score “Anatomy of a Great Film Score” series, we went to outer space to explore Max Steiner’s iconic music for 1933’s King Kong. In this special Halloween-themed bonus installment, we’re coming back down to earth (and checking into a suspiciously dilapidated family-run motel off the highway) to take a closer listen to one of the most iconic horror scores of all time: that for the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock classic, Psycho.

The score for Psycho is a study in economy. Underfunded, Hitchcock was thinking in terms of working with less...

Indiana Jones 4's Infamous Nuke Scene Actually Got Some Things Right According To Expert
Image
The nuclear blast scene is one of the most infamous scenes from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, with Indy surviving a nuclear explosion by hiding in a lead-lined fridge. A nuclear weapons expert affirms that much of the scene is nonsense, but gives it credit for its depiction of a thermal pulse and for the "positive phase" of a nuclear shockwave. The nuke scene speaks to a larger problem in Indiana Jones 4, with the film leaning too heavily into over-the-top and CGI-heavy action set pieces.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull's nuclear bomb scene is assessed by a nuclear weapons expert, and it surprisingly gets a few things right. Released in 2008, the fourth Indiana Jones film sees Steven Spielberg return as director and Harrison Ford return as the titular archeologist. Despite its financial success, the sequel is largely considered a step down from the original trilogy,...

John Williams’ Legendary ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ Score Taught ‘Up’ Composer Michael Giacchino the Craft
Image
For Oscar-winning film composer Michael Giacchino (“Up”), Steven Spielberg’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark” is the defining movie of his life. It’s what sparked his love of movies and film scores, and what started him on his path to becoming a successful composer, all thanks to John Williams’ rousing, orchestral masterpiece.

Giacchino, who most recently scored Taika Waititi’s “Next Goal Wins” and Juan Antonio Bayona’s “Society of the Snow,” and is prepping a remake of the giant ant movie “Them!” as his directorial feature debut, first saw “Raiders” as a 13-year-old in New Jersey when it opened the summer of 1981. He went back about a dozen times and even sneaked a tape recorder into the theater so he could replay it every night. He also had the soundtrack on vinyl and later bought a second LP containing score, dialogue, and sound effects.

“I think that record,...

The Indiana Jones Original Trilogy Extra Who (Technically) Died In All Three Movies
Image
Few deaths in the "Indiana Jones" films as quite as unforgettable as that of Pat Roach's Nazi mechanic in "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Upon spotting Indy (Harrison Ford) duking it out with one of his fellow Nazi handymen near a plane preparing to take off, Roach's nameless, burly villain smiles to himself as he removes his shirt, clearly itching for a fight. He proceeds to give Indy quite the thrashing and might've well won their match, had he bothered to turn around in time and spot the spinning airplane propellor bearing down on him.

Roach had a knack for playing the heel, starting with his run on the British wrestling circuit. Having earned a black belt in Judo before becoming the National Judo Champion in 1960, Roach spent the next decade wrestling under such personas as "Big" and "Lord" Pat Roach, squaring off against the likes of Dwayne Johnson's grandfather,...

The 10 Best Choir Movies, From "Sister Act" to "The Fighting Temptations"
Image
Chloe Bailey has made a name for herself in the music industry as one half of the musical sibling duo Chloe x Halle and her recent solo album "In Pieces." Now in her latest film "Praise This," the "Grow-ish" star's music is merging with her burgeoning acting career, as she plays an up-and-coming singer named Sam who dreams of one day getting her big break. However, her plan goes off track when her father forces her to move from Los Angeles to Atlanta to live with her cousin Jess (Anjelika Washington). But after joining Jess's praise team, Sam realizes the group could be her ticket to stardom if she helps them win a national championship competition.

The film, which premieres on Peacock on April 7, seems like it will easily join the list of iconic choir movies alongside the likes of "The Fighting Temptations" and the "Sister Act" franchise. If you...

Let’s Scare Bryan to Death: Philip Ridley’s Heartless with Bede Jermyn
Image
This month on Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, we’re navigating a harsh world as depicted by eccentric storyteller Philip Ridley. I’m a huge fan of Ridley’s surreal 1995 fable, The Passion of Darkly Noon, but I hadn’t realized that almost 15 years later he released another film, the 2009 urban fairy tale Heartless. So, I’m very grateful to this month’s guest, Bede Jermyn, for bringing it to my attention. Jermyn is a fantastic horror journalist who’s a member of the Australian Film Critics Association, a critic and podcaster for The Super Network, and host of Bede Vs. The Living Dead, a podcast devoted to exploring “remakes, re-edits, unofficial follow-ups, etc. to George A. Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead.”

Ridley’s Heartless follows Jamie (Jim Sturgess), a lonely photographer who has a heart-shaped birthmark that covers half of his face that makes him very shy.
