Whitechapel series 4 episode 1 review
Review Becky Lea 4 Sep 2013 - 22:00

Whitechapel takes a leaf from Dennis Wheatley's book in this week's occult-related mystery. Here's Becky's review of the series 4 opener...

Never for the faint of heart, Whitechapel kickstarted the new series in suitably grisly fashion as a homeless man was slowly crushed to death by an anonymous assailant. Meanwhile, Di Joe Chandler (Rupert Penry-Jones) and DS Ray Miles (Phil Davis) are celebrating the book launch of their colleague Edward Buchan (Steve Pemberton) before being called away to investigate the latest mysterious murder.

The opening scenes were deftly handled, flitting between the Whitechapel team at Buchan’s book launch to the slow, torturous death of this episode’s mysterious corpse, swiftly re-establishing the show’s unflinching attention to murderous detail. Despite being filmed mostly in shadow, the killing of Alexander Zukanov (David Gant) was possibly one of the series’ most memorable for just how affecting it was.

The Newsroom: Monday (September 2) at 9pm on Sky Atlantic

Is it preachy and melodramatic? Oh yes. But crucially The Newsroom is a lot of fun as well, and slightly annoying Aaron Sorkin is still a hell of a lot better than most other shows out there.

Jeff Daniels returns as aggressive anchorman Will McAvoy, whose ongoing crusade to make News Night a reliable and moral source of hard news hits a bump when they have to retract a story accusing the Us government of war crimes, resulting in a ticking off from the Atlantis Cable News legal team. Expect rapid-fire talking and...

'The Americans' recap: 'The Clock' counts down to Star Wars
Conflict is inevitable when good people do bad things. It shouldn't be much of a surprise then that there is a lot of conflict on "The Americans."

Granted, we're not sure yet, are we, that Philip and Elizabeth Jennings (Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell) are good people. They do have their morals and their patriotism -- both good qualities. Unfortunately, as Kgb agents, they also have to do things that damage everything good inside of them.

What Philip and Elizabeth have to do in "The Clock" has the potential to not only damage but destroy everything. The couple is given an impossible, evil task. They succeed. But is that enough to keep them safe?

"They shouldn't ask us to do impossible things. But we did it."

Sexy Times

This time, it's Philip engaging in extramarital sex for the good of the Motherland. His conquest is Annalise, one of those blonde...
