Written by Dardano Sacchetti (Demons) and Giorgio Mariuzzo (The House by the Cemetery), the 1981 Italian horror cult classic chronicles the supernatural bedlam that ensues when a gateway to Hell is opened beneath a New Orleans hotel — but a written summary of the plot is a disservice to the baroque yet ethereal atmosphere cultivated on screen.

The Beyond plays like a fever dream through a haunted attraction. Fulci brazenly merges discordant genre tropes — from zombies and possession to a chilling mystique a la The Shining and his penchant for outrageous splatter — into an economical 87 minutes that succeeds despite itself.

Grindhouse Releasing has opened a gateway to Hell with Lucio Fulci‘s The Beyond on 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + DVD + CD.

Limited to 3,500 units, the six-disc “Eye of Eibon” edition costs $66.66 and will begin shipping in April.

The 1981 Italian horror classic has been newly scanned in 4K from the original Techniscope camera negative with DolbyVision Hdr.

The theatrical version is presented in 4K with archival 5.1 DTS-hd Master Audio surround sound re-mixed by Academy Award winner Paul Ottosson plus the Italian language soundtrack and original mono mix.

The Beyond: Composer’s Cut, featuring a new 5.1 DTS-hd Master Audio surround sound re-mix with a newly reimagined score from composer Fabio Frizzi (Zombie), is also included.

Night of the Demon

Not to be confused with the 1957 film of the same name (also on Screambox), 1980’s Night of the Demon is an unforgettable Bigfoot experience. It’s no surprise that the gory exploitation flick was prosecuted as a “video nasty” by the British Board of Film Classification upon its initial release. It’s best remembered for a scene in which Bigfoot rips off a guy’s manhood — and that’s not even the most outrageous death scene!

The cheesefest plays like an early slasher, but instead of a masked killer lurking in the woods, it’s a guy in a cheap gorilla costume.

It’s always a kick to write about Lucio Fulci; long one of my favourite filmmakers, his films, whether immersed in the surreal or not, are some of the most memorable in modern horror. Severin Films brings two of his later and lesser loved movies plus a new quasi-doc, all on spanking new Blu.

Aenigma

For my money, this was Fulci’s last gasp: a solid Carrie/Jennifer mélange set at a boarding school, in which a comatose girl takes over a new student to exact revenge on those that put her there. As nonsensical as ever, it is lively, atmospheric, and has a death by snail that is pure Lucio. This Fulci is for Fun.

August’s home media offerings are wrapping up in a big way this week, and I hope you’ve got your wallets ready because there are a ton of releases that genre fans are going to want to add to their collections. Fulci fans should be excited for the arrival of both The House by the Cemetery and The New York Ripper in 4K, courtesy of Blue Underground, and Severin is having their own Fulci fiesta this week, too, with their releases of Aenigma, Demonia as well as the recent documentary Fulci for Fake.

Scream Factory also has a killer lineup of titles headed home on Tuesday, including the Collector’s Edition of Tales from the Darkside: The Movie and the Universal Horror Collection: Volume 6.

While he may not have the name recognition of George Romero or Wes Craven, Lucio Fulci has had a singular impact on the horror genre. And though his work doesn’t lend itself to the sort of pop culture familiarity that unites these and other more mainstream horror directors, what he did best within the genre, he did as well as any other filmmaker. His was a down and dirty horror: grisly, textured, elaborate, graphic. And arguably his finest achievement, certainly one that perfectly showcases his style and skill, is The Beyond (1981), out now on an extensive 3-disc collectors edition Blu-ray.

In Lucio Fulci’s 1981 horror movie, The Beyond, Liza Merril thought she could fix up her inherited hotel and re-open it, but as fans of the film know, Liza’s place of business serves as one of the Seven Doors of Death, a portal to hell that no amount of new paint or improved plumbing can fix. Grindhouse Releasing revealed today the official release date of their 3-disc restored Blu-ray of The Beyond.

Grindhouse Releasing’s The Beyond Blu-ray is scheduled to come out on February 10th and will be available to pre-order later this week. Directed by Lucio Fulci off a screenplay he wrote with Dardano Sacchetti and Giorgio Mariuzzo, The Beyond stars Catriona MacColl, David Warbeck, Cinzia Monreale, and Veronica Lazar.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. By this point in his career Lucio Fulci was severely running out of steam. His titles were no longer met with any fanfare and even his most ardent supporters had begun to think less of his newer creations. With his best days behind him the once acclaimed director turned towards two different pathways to help keep his filmmaking career afloat.

The first path Signore Fulci chose was to get more violent, bloodier, and gorier. This pathway produced mixed returns. At times the gore was outstanding, enough to keep a viewer interested and wanting more. In other instances the gore was in service of a paltry story and left the viewer wondering the point of all the brutality. Either way this pathway has very little bearing on Aenigma.

Lucio Fulci sure had a way with films, especially his “Gates of Hell” trilogy. Arrow Video now complete their Blu-Ray release of the trilogy with The House by the Cemetery (the other two being City of the Living Dead and The Beyond) and what a release. With an excellent picture quality and a disk full of extras this could arguably be the best way to experience the film, other than on the big screen of course.

"And you will face the sea of darkness, and all therein may be explored.” Lucio Fulci certainly does not fail to be epic in this masterpiece called “The Beyond.” Granted I have not seen every Fulci movie but he has not failed to impress with the horror movies I have seen so far. I have yet to see any of his earlier Giallo movies. To many, “The Beyond” is part of Fulci’s “Gates of Hell” trilogy along with “City of the Living Dead” and “House by the Cemetery.” Out of the three, “The Beyond” I found to be the scariest with a solid story to back it up. You don’t see much of this movie as far as being released on formats. It was released by Anchor Bay in Widescreen 2:35:1 about a decade ago. It received a DVD release much later.

With a gory and Gothic opening Lucio Fulci thrusts us straight into a world in which chains tear at flesh in the most grisly ways possible and the most effective way of finally finishing off a man you’re torturing and murdering is with a semi-crucifixion and a lot of acid to the face. This is The Beyond and if you find those first few minutes hard to stomach then you’re probably not prepared for the gruesome tale that Fulci unfolds in graphic detail on screen.

Aside from setting the tone and providing an opening that somewhat explains the supernatural curse at the heart of The Beyond this preface also plays out a little like a bridge between the classic Gothic film tradition and the lurid strain of horror that Fulci was a something of a master in.
