Oliver Stone's 'JFK' Gleefully Rewrote History
Image
Quick LinksThe Cruel Truth Behind Oliver Stone's 'JFK''jfk' Is History for Entertainment Purposes OnlyWhy Did Oliver Stone Mythologize an Absurd Footnote in Legal History?

Recently, President Donald Trump authorized the remaining files pertaining to the John F. Kennedy assassination to be declassified. For many people, their knowledge of the assassination comes from Oliver Stone’s 1991 courtroom thriller, JFK. However, it must be said that Stone's movie is largely fabricated and hasn't aged well, Stone whitewashing his "hero," New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison, played by Kevin Costner. The real trial was an unmitigated trainwreck.

As for those secret papers, don’t get your hopes up. Hyped at the end of the film, the sealed findings of the 1976-79 United States House Select Committee on Assassinations are bound to disappoint, at least for those who took the movie JFK to heart. The movie might be a filmmaking tour de force,...

“They screwed up everything”: Donald Trump May Have Declassified JFK Files But Oliver Stone Is Sure It Was an Inside Job After His 1991 Movie
Image
President Donald Trump has ordered the declassification of records pertaining to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr. The order comes after former President Joe Biden postponed the release of some additional files in 2022. The release of files began during Trump’s first presidency under the JFK Act.

The JFK Act reversed the decision to seal official records of the assassination from the public until 2029. Interestingly, Oliver Stone’s 1991 film JFK was partially credited for the passing of the act. The film was a critical and commercial hit, but it remains one of the most controversial films from Stone.

Was the Controversy Over Oliver Stone's 1991 Political Thriller Overblown?
Image
When it comes to historical biopics, theres arguably none more controversial than Oliver Stones 1991 smash hit, JFK. While it remains Stones highest-grossing film (with over $200 million worldwide on a budget of only $40 million) and earned rave critical reviews and several Oscar nominations (two of which it won), almost no one will call it historically accurate. Even calling it a biopic at all is a stretch, as Stone takes numerous creative liberties in order to argue the shocking assassination of John F. Kennedy was actually a conspiracy.

Fans of the film argue that Oliver Stone had no intentions of being historically accurate and that he was more concerned with capturing the feelings of distrust and paranoia that many felt after the assassination. Just as many people argue that the historical inaccuracies are too glaring to ignore and worse, that the movies promotion of conspiracy theories feels particularly uncomfortable in the 21st century.

Assassination: Bryan Cranston, Al Pacino, Brendan Fraser Come Together to Reopen JFK Files 33 Years After Kevin Costner Did
Image
Brace yourselves for another film that touches upon the JFK files! Bryan Cranston, Al Pacino, Brendan Fraser, and Jessica Chastain will come together in Barry Levinson’s mystery thriller, Assassination. The film comes almost three and a half decades after Oliver Stone’s controversial film JFK hit theaters.

The cast of Assassination: Jessica Chastain (Miss Sloane | Credits: EuropaCorp), Bryan Cranston (Your Honor | Credits: Showtime), Al Pacino (The Irishman | Credits: Netflix), Brendan Fraser (Killers of the Flower Moon | Credits: Apple Studios)

The Kevin Costner-starrer was based on the conspiracy that Lee Harvey Oswald did not act alone. Assassination will be a modern take on this conspiracy and comes at a time when most of the JFK files are made public. Costner earlier mentioned that the film was to be partially credited for the JFK Act which resulted in the unsealing of the files.

“I wish, in a way, it had just died off”: One of the Best Kevin Costner Led Movies from the ‘90s Forever Ruined the Image of a Legendary Director Who Has Worked With Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp
Image
Kevin Costner appeared in one of his most controversial roles as New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison in JFK. The film came from Oliver Stone who was having a pretty great repertoire in the ’80s and ’90s. Despite the success of the film, the controversy surrounding the film gave Stone the image of a conspiracy theorist.

While he has no regrets about his film, he expressed 25 years later that he wished the talk around the film had died down soon. The film received critical acclaim and Costner’s performance in the film was praised by many. JFK went on to win the Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing.

“There is nothing casual about that movie”: Kevin Costner’s Sharpest Role Was Surprisingly Not in a Western That Put Him in the Crosshairs for a Long Time
Image
Kevin Costner took on the role of real-life attorney Jim Garrison in Oliver Stone’s JFK. Like other movies from Stone, this film also raised several questions about the political landscape of the country at the time, making it a controversial project. Costner’s Western roles, be it Dances with Wolves, Yellowstone, or Horizon, weren’t nearly as sharp or controversial as JFK.

However, the film received critical praise for Costner’s performance, direction, editing, and cinematography. The film even won the Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing. Costner initially turned down the project but was convinced by his agent who was a big fan of Stone.

Jay’s Top Ten Conspiracy Films
By: Jay Dyer

Some of these will be obvious, but are there insights in certain lesser-known films that shed light on real-world conspiracies? My list will exclude all things alien, since I’m of the opinion the alien agenda is largely a bunch of bunk. In selecting my favorites, I’ve tried to balance quality with subject matter, as some films may have a great concept with poor execution. If you missed any of these or if they’re long-forgotten films you halfway watched with that sexy date 15 years ago, I recommend giving them a new look.

10.Conspiracy Theory. 1997. Director Richard Donner has Mel Gibson as the tinfoil hat nutball seeking to uncover the truth about his own past. Ultimately the film details the actual Mkultra program, with Captain Picard as the handler.

9. V for Vendetta. 2005. A Wachowski brothers work, V initiates Eve into the realities of the establishment’s corruption.

Oscar-Nominated Film Series: Stone (Thrillingly) Assassinates Truth While Investigating Kennedy Assassination
'JFK' movie with Kevin Costner as Jim Garrison 'JFK' assassination movie: Gripping political drama gives added meaning to 'Rewriting History' If it's an Oliver Stone film, it must be bombastic, sentimental, clunky, and controversial. With the exception of "clunky," JFK is all of the above. It is also riveting, earnest, dishonest, moving, irritating, paranoid, and, more frequently than one might expect, outright brilliant. In sum, Oliver Stone's 1991 political thriller about a determined district attorney's investigation of the assassination of U.S. president John F. Kennedy is a slick piece of propaganda that mostly works both dramatically and cinematically. If only some of the facts hadn't gotten trampled on the way to film illustriousness. With the exception of John Williams' overemphatic score – Oliver Stone films need anything but overemphasis – JFK's technical and artistic details are put in place to extraordinary effect. Joe Hutshing and Pietro Scalia's editing...

Oliver Stone's 'JFK' to be re-released on 50th anniversary of Kennedy assassination
Oliver Stone
Oliver Stone's "JFK" is a masterpiece. I say that unequivocally. It's masterful filmmaking of a degree few could ever hope to reach, but it's been consistently plagued and overshadowed by the whiff of conspiracy fatigue ever since its 1991 release. This has always been strange to me. Nothing presented in the film is all that far-fetched, and depending on your opinion of Dallas journalist Jim Marrs, it was all perfectly well-reported before Stone and screenwriter Zachary Sklar came along. Meanwhile, there has been a curiously strong push lately, it seems, to ensure once-and-for-all acceptance of the lone gunman theory, which, I'm...

Tonight's MovieMovie: JFK
"You're close. You're closer than you think."

Plenty of conspiracies going around in this weekend's Skyfall release, so why not close out the weekend with the ultimate conspiracy movie, Oliver Stone's JFK?

Released in 1991, JFK followed the investigation of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, as conducted by former New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison (played by Kevin Costner). Stone based the screenplay on two books — Garrison's On the Trail of the Assassins and Jim Marrs' Crossfire: The Plot That Killed Kennedy — as well as putting together his own team to do exhaustive research on the subject. Stone was rewarded with 8 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Also nominated was Tommy Lee Jones for his work playing Clay Shaw, the only person charged with in connection with the Kennedy Assassination (though he was found not guilty). JFK is filled with great performances, however, with...
