Mindy Newell: Review Redux
Cat Grant: One time at a party, Paul McCartney swore to me that he and Yoko were the closest of friends. He was more convincing.

Cat Grant not accepting Kara Danvers’ statement that she (Kara) is not Supergirl

Rey: There are stories about what happened.

Han Solo: It’s true. All of it. The Dark Side. The Jedi. They’re real.

Listen Up! Spoilers Abound, So If You Don’t Want To Know, Don’t Read This Column.

A few weeks ago, four days before Christmas to be exact, I said that I loved Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and had problems with Supergirl. While I still love Episode VI of a saga that took place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, there are two things that bother me. Silly things, to be sure, but just enough to pick at my enjoyment a teensy bit:...

Star Wars Lords of the Sith by Paul S. Kemp | Review
I was a fan of the Star Wars expanded universe. I got as excited for getting new Star Wars galleys as I did getting a new China Mieville, George R.R. Martin, or Steven Erikson Arc, and Timothy Zahn’s core 5 books in the EU, the Thrawn Trilogy and following duology, are among my favorite chapters of Star Wars history Period from any medium. Even the most enthusiastic fan of Star Wars and the work Del Rey has done with the license, however, will admit there have been lows to go along with highs, many of them seem universally agreed upon, and many others are personal gems or dislikes that make the conversation that much more interesting. I think it helpful to know where people stand or stood on former works, so with that in mind, along with the Zahn contributions, I really enjoyed what Karen Traviss accomplished with Stormtroopers, I...

Daredevil Review
Netflix

Marvel has managed to completely reinvigorate the superhero movie in a massive way. It all began with 2008’s Iron Man and then spread out to the rest of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, culminating in the release of 2012’s The Avengers. But since then, Marvel hasn’t been content to just focus on the big league superheroes.

Rather, with Phase Two, they’ve started to branch out a little bit more. Not only have there been wild card characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy but Marvel even expanded out into television with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Now comes the release of Daredevil, a Marvel-produced series airing exclusively on Netflix: a new move that promises to revolutionize the superhero genre yet again.

Daredevil is just the first of four planned series Marvel is making for Netflix, and will be followed by Aka Jessica Jones, then Luke Cage and finally Iron Fist...

Daredevil episode 12 viewing notes: The Ones We Leave Behind
The penultimate episode of Daredevil's exemplary first season leaves us with more questions and corpses. Here are James' viewing notes...

With the whole series of Daredevil now available on Netflix, the race is on to reach the ending before someone spoils it for you. But that presents us with a problem. How do we approach reviews? It's not much use speculating about the future of the series when it's available at a moment's notice, but watching the whole thing in one go for a single review is impractical for anyone with a day job and personal relationships to maintain – to say nothing of how difficult it is to critically appraise 12 hours of television if you don't savour the instalments properly.

That's why, instead of traditional reviews, we're trying something new. An episode-by-episode unpicking of the show, looking at its techniques, characters and use of the source material. Call them annotations,...

Ben Gibson Goes to Australia
Ben Gibson, the departing Director of the London Film School, has been appointed to a new senior role at Aftrs, the Australian Film Television & Radio School, as Director, Degree Programs. He will start work in Sydney in September.

Gibson will play a key leadership role in ensuring the successful delivery and development of a new three-year Aftrs Bachelor of Arts (Screen) degree and Aftrs Screen and Screen Business Masters degrees, which are being restructured and relaunched for 2015.

“Ben is eminently qualified for this pivotal new role at Aftrs, and I’m thrilled that he could be persuaded to bring his considerable skills, experience and academic rigor to Australia. His 14 years as Director of the very successful London Film School are notable for his work in building up the school’s reputation in the UK and abroad and expanding and accrediting its prestigious postgraduate degrees. Ben has also been a very successful and original independent producer and production executive, and has previously worked in distribution and exhibition, so he comes with a deep knowledge of the international screen industry at all levels,” said Sandra Levy, CEO of the Aftrs.

Prior to joining the London Film School in 2001, Gibson worked as a film distributor and independent producer, and as Head of Production at the British Film Institute from 1988 to 1998. His production and executive production credits include Terence Davies' " The Long Day Closes," Derek Jarman's "Wittgenstein," John Maybury's "Love is the Devil," Carine Adler's "Under the Skin"and Jasmin Dizdar's "Beautiful People," as well as 20 other low budget features and many shorts by UK directors including Patrick Keiller, Gurinder Chadha, Lynne Ramsay, Richard Kwietniowski and Andrew Kotting. As a partner in distributors The Other Cinema/Metro Pictures he acquired and promoted films by Pedro Almodovar, Chris Marker, Chantal Akerman and Jean-Luc Godard as well as opening the West End’s Metro Cinema in 1986. He has also been a theater director, a repertory film programmer and a film critic and journalist. He leaves Lfs at the end of July.

Ben Gibson said: “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute to Sandra Levy’s vision of Aftrs as a complete screen school -- and to get the chance to work in the Australian film industry, one I’ve hugely admired and followed -- so far from a great distance. Aftrs offers a special combination of good things: self-confidence, an extraordinary heritage, great creative ambition, exceptional resources, a wide educational scope and a central mission in a dynamic and productive screen industry. It’s rightly considered to be one of the great film schools of the world. I can’t wait to join the team and get started there.”

Gibson’s final year at Lfs has been attended by great creative success. The school won 35 festival prizes and mentions in 2013-14, including a BAFTA nomination. Ms Levy pointed out that this year’s Palme d'Or for Best Short Film at the Cannes Film Festival was won by Leidi, the Lfs graduation film of Simón Mesa Soto. Also at Cannes, amongst seven graduates featured in the 2014 selection, "The Salt of the Earth," co-directed by Lfs graduate Juliano Ribeiro Salgado with Wim Wenders, was awarded the Un Certain Regard’s Special Jury Prize.

Director Mike Leigh, Chair of Governors at the London Film School, in announcing Ben’s departure earlier this year, said: “Ben Gibson has led Lfs from strength to strength over his fourteen years of outstanding service, and we will be sad to see him go.”

Aftrs is Australia’s national screen arts and broadcasting school and has been named as one of the Top 20 film schools in the world by industry journal, The Hollywood Reporter. As an elite specialist institution, Aftrs provides excellence in education through its practice based model, and aspires to deliver a dynamic educational offering that prepares the most talented and creative students – novice, experienced, fully fledged professional specialists – to be platform agnostic, creative and resilient in an industry subject to constant changes in knowledge and technology. The new BA Screen is a 3-year program offering a strong base in the understanding of story and screen history alongside a comprehensive introduction to the skills of screen production.

The movie's central mythology is adapted from the animated TV series, including the villainous Dread. Stewart Hendler takes pride in the fact that the villain's suit was made by Legacy Effects, the studio that's created famous suits and creature designs in such films as Iron Man, Avatar, and Pacific Rim.

Max Steel follows 16-year-old Max McGrath, whose body generates massive energy bursts that he can't control. He meets Steel,...

'.American Idol' Recap: Sam Woolf & Cj Harris Outperform The Rest Of Top Ten Guys
American Idol returned on Wednesday with the all-male portion of Rush Week, where the top 10 guys performed before a live audience in the hopes of cracking into the final group of singers.

'American Idol' Recap

As with the girls, the 15 male semi-finalists waited nervously to see if their names were called by Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez or Harry Connick Jr. to hit the stage and sing for America’s votes. Idol alums Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry were back mentoring in the workshop, as was veteran judge Randy Jackson.

Caleb Johnson, the 70s Meat Loaf lookalike, was the first name called. Singing “Stay with Me” by The Faces. Johnson carried the song by the British rock band admirably, while working the stage like a pro. Perhaps his biggest fan at the judges table, Urban, said the performance was “killer.”

Next up, was the soulful Cj Harris. Harris took on Ray Lamontagne song “Shelter,...

Zack Snyder on Batman Vs Superman and Ben Affleck
News Glen Chapman 11 Feb 2014 - 07:14

Zack Snyder has been chatting about the influence of The Dark Knight Returns, and Ben Affleck’s role in Man Of Steel 2

There's already been some speculation as to how big an influence Frank Miller’s seminal The Dark Knight Returns is set to be on the upcoming Man Of Steel sequel, which we're still calling Batman Vs Superman, at least until a formal title is announced. The influence of Miller's work was hinted at by Zack Snyder previously, when he used a quote from the series to announce his plan for the follow-up to Man Of Steel.

Snyder's now said of the influence that Miller's work is having on the screenplay that he's putting together with David S Goyer and Chris Terrio that "the comic book will influence the history of Batman Vs Superman, on which the writer David S Goyer and...

Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon chat about Ben Affleck's casting as Batman, as more details emerge...

The reaction to the casting of Ben Affleck as Batman in 2015's Man Of Steel sequel, the Batman/Superman movie, shows little sign of abating. Inevitably, much of the talk and reaction since has centered on the surprise news that Warner Bros revealed last week.

Morgan Freeman, for instance, has been chatting to USA Today, and his initial reaction to the casting of Affleck was "wow, and good luck". Freeman admitted that "after the [Christopher Nolan Dark Knight] trilogy, I thought that no one would try it again for a few years to let this whole thing die down, because it's still there. So I don't know, I hope Ben does well".

Freeman also admitted that he'd be surprised if he got to reprise the role of Lucius Fox. "If you...

Henry Cavill Defends Affleck’s Casting
Henry Cavill, the current cinematic Superman, has weighed in on the controversial casting choice of Ben Affleck as Batman in the Man of Steel sequel. Cavill is “Very excited” about working with Affleck on the project.

Henry Cavill recently gave an interview in Jersey to a BBC interviewer regarding his view on the much debated topic of whether or not Ben Affleck will make a good Batman in future DC films. Everyone seems to be chiming in on the topic, and now Superman himself has added his opinion. Cavill was enthusiastic about working with Affleck and defended the casting, saying, "He is such a great actor. I'm so very excited about working with him. He is going to have such a presence. I can't wait."

Director Zack Snyder talked to Entertainment Weekly about the pairing of Cavill and Affleck in the sequel. He said, “Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman.

Affleck Getting Batted Around Online By Angry Bat-Fans
Fans of the Caped Crusader spent their Friday lashing out at the choice of Ben Affleck as Batman in the Man of Steel sequel. The Oscar winning actor has a 71% disapproval rating on Twitter.

There’s an old saying that there’s no such thing as bad Press. Let’s hope that DC Entertainment and Warner Brothers feel that way, because the press they are getting for the casting of Ben Affleck in Man of Steel 2 is not exactly encouraging.

It’s no big surprise that there was a lot of immediate online chatter after Ben Affleck was officially cast as the latest big screen Batman. Within the first hour of the announcement, 96,088 tweets were sent out about Affleck as the new Dark Knight. The casting issue has been averaging 39,225 tweets per hour, for a total of 509,922 tweets over a 12 hour period. However, the buzz being generated may not...

Ben Affleck Cast As Batman In Superman vs Batman Movie
After much long conjecture over who would wear the cape and cowl, Zack Snyder officially has his Batman; Ben Affleck.

Names like Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling were bandied about, and there was a rumor about Christian Bale being offered a hefty sum to reprise the role for Synder’s films. So much for all of that, because for better or worse we now have our Batman and it will be an interesting journey watching the Argo star make the transformation.

Some ten years ago, when the actor put on the avenging crusader mantle of Marvel’s Daredevil, there were fanboy shrieks of disdain and one shudders to imagine what a mention of Batman would have done. Mercifully, times and people change, and the Ben Affleck of 2013 is a much different beast than the 2003 model.

With three terrific directing gigs under his belt and an Academy Award for Best Picture to show for it,...

Ben Affleck Cast as the Next Batman; Release Date Revealed for Batman/Superman Film!
Well folks, we can finally put all the speculation and rumors to rest, as Warner Bros. has officially revealed who they've cast as the next Batman...Ben Affleck! Even more exciting, the press release of the announcement has also revealed the official release date (but not the title) of the Batman/Superman film. Come inside for all the details.

I know, I know...Ben Affleck might seem like an odd choice, and undoubtedly you can't stop thinking of his last outing as a superhero in Daredevil, but let's set all that aside. Affleck has grown quite a bit as an actor and his last several films have brought forth some stellar performances.

While, I'm not entirely convinced he's exactly right for the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne, I'm not repelled by it either. I think he can bring something strong to the role, and a gravitas more than just a buff dude in a costume.

"There will be an explanation, but it was a little puzzling to me cause I thought my X-Men days were over, but not so."

Clearly, Professor X has risen from beyond to the grave to grace the silver screen with his presence once more. However, Xavier isn't the first comic book character to come back from the dead. Not by a long shot. Click past the jump for our list of the five craziest comic book resurrections ever!

What's in a name? | A Weekend Comment Diversion

She's a Steelers fan. He's a Cowboys fan. Inexplicably, they married anyway, and even more astonishingly, they procreated two adorable little boys, who for purposes of this diversion I shall refer to as Thing Steel 1 and Thing Landry 2.

(Oh yes they did, football fans, and now feel free to question the lengths of your devotion to your own team, loser.)

When Thing 1 was in utero, his mother (my niece) sent us sonogram photos for which she referred to the little nugget of life therein as "Tater-tot," which he entirely resembled and whom I henceforth referred to as Tater.

Anyway, when...
