Screambox Hidden Gems – 5 Horror Movies You Should Stream This Summer
Image
The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.

Night of the Demon

Not to be confused with the 1957 film of the same name (also on Screambox), 1980’s Night of the Demon is an unforgettable Bigfoot experience. It’s no surprise that the gory exploitation flick was prosecuted as a “video nasty” by the British Board of Film Classification upon its initial release. It’s best remembered for a scene in which Bigfoot rips off a guy’s manhood — and that’s not even the most outrageous death scene!

The cheesefest plays like an early slasher, but instead of a masked killer lurking in the woods, it’s a guy in a cheap gorilla costume.

August 25th Horror Releases Include Tales From The Darkside: The Movie (Blu-ray), The House By The Cemetery (4K/Blu-ray), Demonia (Blu-ray/DVD), Universal Horror Collection: Volume 6 (Blu-ray)
Image
August’s home media offerings are wrapping up in a big way this week, and I hope you’ve got your wallets ready because there are a ton of releases that genre fans are going to want to add to their collections. Fulci fans should be excited for the arrival of both The House by the Cemetery and The New York Ripper in 4K, courtesy of Blue Underground, and Severin is having their own Fulci fiesta this week, too, with their releases of Aenigma, Demonia as well as the recent documentary Fulci for Fake.

Scream Factory also has a killer lineup of titles headed home on Tuesday, including the Collector’s Edition of Tales from the Darkside: The Movie and the Universal Horror Collection: Volume 6.

Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for August 25th include Dead Pit, The Beast Must Die, The Last Victim, Live Feed, Gemini, Hallucinations, and Alien Scum.

De Niro & De Palma The Early Films
No 1960s film student had more on the ball than Brian De Palma, who enlisted a smart group of collaborators to pull together his voyeuristic student-filmmaking, Alfred Hitchcock-worshiping early experimental pictures. In these three early features we can feel the director being influenced in multiple directions — do ensemble comedy and Godard-esque minimalism have a future?

Directed by Brian De Palma

Brian De Palma fans tend to love his later overdone exercises in Hitchcockian excess and voyeurism, whereas I tend to enjoy his creative student work, his hit & run, improvise-and-hope enterprises. The man certainly had the drive. By 1964 he was co-directing a film on Long Island with the money of a rich student friend. De Palma’s lopsided...

Drive-In Dust Offs: Aenigma (1987)
It’s been a while since I’ve taken a Fulci out for a spin; frankly the latter part of his career has generally been met with the indifference (and occasional disdain) afforded his fellow countryman Dario Argento. Fair? Well, art is subjective, but even strict apologists have a hard time defending some late in the game efforts. Which brings us to Aenigma (1987), Fulci’s take on Argento, and a fine last gasp of electric madness.

Distributed by Filman International late December in France, Aenigma didn’t see release in Fulci’s homeland until August of ’88; by this point his films weren’t even making it stateside anymore, and it didn’t show up in North America until late October the following year for a limited run. When DVDs started making noise in the early ‘00s, Aenigma was finally brought to a wider audience who promptly gave it the awkward smile of a disappointed parent.

Jared Martin, Who Played Rodeo Cowboy Dusty Farlow on 'Dallas,' Dies at 75
Jared Martin
Jared Martin, the Dallas actor who portrayed Dusty Farlow, the rodeo cowboy and Sue Ellen Ewing seducer who perished in a plane crash, only to have producers resurrect his character by popular demand, has died. He was 75.

Martin died Wednesday of pancreatic cancer at his home in Philadelphia, his son, Christian Martin, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Martin roomed with Brian De Palma when they both attended Columbia University in New York and appeared in the first and third features of the director's career: Murder a la Mod (1968) and The Wedding Party (1969).

In De Palma's inaugural effort, Martin...

‘Murder à la Mod’: Brian De Palma’s Induction as a Significant Cinematic Voice
Debut features are often some of the most interesting cases one comes across when undertaking the deep-dive of an auteur’s filmography. Oftentimes, signature aesthetic tics are nascent, not developed, and these premiere outings are less than fully formed visions. However, there are plenty of impressive first films that present a filmmaker’s particular fixations as more or less formulated, a clear direction leading to the later canonical landmarks. Such is the case with Brian De Palma’s Murder à la Mod, which bares the thrillmeister’s genre proclivities in full view. Although Murder is technically the second film De Palma made, it was the first to get released, as 1963’s The Wedding Party wasn’t distributed until six years after its production. (It also stands as the man’s first solo feature effort.) Indeed, Murder à la Mod is less aligned with De Palma’s pre-Sisters satires than the...

Sarah Michelle Gellar in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)
8 TV shows based on horror movies -- and how they fared
Sarah Michelle Gellar in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)
With the recent successes of such TV series as "American Horror Story," "Hannibal" and Showtime's "Penny Dreadful," horror is hot on the small-screen right now -- so much so that in addition to MTV's forthcoming small-screen "Scream" spinoff, TV studios are in the midst of bringing a horde of cinematic fright-film properties to television, ranging from "Shutter Island" to "The Devil's Advocate" to "The Mist." In light of this, I've taken a look back at eight previous horror movie-to-tv translations and analyzed why they hit -- or didn't -- with audiences. "Bates Motel" (A&E) Based on: "Psycho" Aired: 2013-present Why it did (or didn't) work:a great pedigree ("Lost" showrunner Carlton Cuse), a terrific cast (Vera Farmiga, Freddie Highmore) and generally positive critical notices gave "Bates Motel" a sheen of respectability that worked well in this Golden Age of prestige television. The show has so far aired three successful seasons...

Paths Of Glory (Criterion) Stanley Kubrick’s 1957 antiwar classic put him on the map as a major filmmaker. Kirk Douglas stars in a true story about a French officer in Ww I who locks horns with the military’s top brass after his men are court-martialed for failing to carry out an obvious suicide mission. A perfect film, across the board, with fine support from George Macready as one of the most despicable martinet’s ever captured on film, Ralph Meeker, and Adolphe Menjou, all oily charm as a conniving General. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Audio commentary by critic Gary Giddins; Excerpt from 1966 audio interview with Kubrick; 1979 interview with Douglas; New interviews with Jan Harlan, Christiane Kubrick, and producer James B. Harris; French television documentary on real-life case which inspired the film; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 1.0 mono.
