Helen Mirren is sharing her thoughts on playing a Jewish character as a non-Jewish actress.

The 78-year-old Oscar-winner has been facing criticism surrounding her role as former Prime Minister of Israel Golda Meir in the upcoming film Golda. Some have expressed opposition to Helen portraying a Jewish person.

Helen told the Radio Times that “the whole issue of casting has exploded out of the water fairly recently”.

She added, “I’ve had other Jewish roles [in Woman in Gold and The Debt], but not an uber-Jewish role like Golda Meir. I did tell [director Guy Nattiv] that I’m not Jewish, in case he thought I was.”

Helen said that Guy, who is Jewish, did not express any concern with her casting.

“I said, ‘If that’s an issue, I’ll step away, no problem.’ But he said, ‘No, it’s not an issue.

Helen Mirren thinks it is “ridiculous” that writers are being told to stay in their lanes.

The Oscar-winning actress has railed against the idea that writers can only tell stories about their own race or religion after the so-called “Jewface” row over her new movie Golda.

“It’s more frightening for a writer to be told they are not allowed to write about subjects with which they don’t have an immediate DNA connection,” Mirren told the Radio Times. “I imagine it must be very alarming. And ridiculous.”

Mirren was responding to a statement from Golda writer Nicholas Martin, who said there is a “creeping authoritarianism” in the entertainment industry, leading to writers being told they “cannot do this or that.” He told the Radio Times: “Am I just supposed to write about middle-aged men living in south London?”

When we see Dame Helen Mirren as Golda, no one should raise any doubts about what proves to be the most natural casting for Golda. I was fortunate and grateful to have helped the brilliant and dedicated screenwriter Nicholas Martin with sharing my memories and thoughts and insights about my late grandmother, Golda Meir, around the Yom Kippur War and other times, her personality, and her many other facets. I read the script at different stages, and we had many wonderful discussions. One day, the question of casting came up.

Growing up in Israel, Guy Nattiv knew one narrative about Golda Meir, the country’s prime minister from 1969-1974. “She was the pariah of Israel,” says Nattiv. “Everyone treated her like she’s a monster.” Unlike other historical figures, there were no parks or schools named after Israel’s first (and only) female prime minister. This idiosyncratic character beat arrives early in Guy Nattiv’s ho-hum biopic, and speaks volumes about story and subject, telling all you need to know about Meir the person and “Golda” the film.

That Golda’s a smoker should come as no shock; nearly everyone is in this period accurate window into 1973. What sets the Prime Minister apart is her doggedness – her clarity of purpose and tenacity of intent. War is coming in Guy Nattiv’s Golda, onscreen and off. One month after “The Pianist” actress Maureen Lippman criticized the casting around upcoming biopic “Golda,” lead star Helen Mirren is addressing the controversy.

Lippman wrote an op-ed letter to The Guardian on January 12 to clarify her comments surrounding Mirren taking on the role of former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, despite not being Jewish herself.

“Helen will be great. Good actress, sexy and intelligent. Looks the part. [But] my opinion, and that’s what it is, a mere opinion, is that if the character’s race, creed or gender drives or defines the portrayal then the correct — for want of an umbrella [term] — ethnicity should be a priority,” Lippman said. “The Jewishness of the character is so integral. I’m sure she will be marvelous, but it would never be allowed for Ben Kingsley to play Nelson Mandela. You just couldn’t even go there.”

The film stars Helen Mirren, an expert at revealing the inner lives of public figures in films like “The Queen.” It will be directed by Guy Nattiv, an Oscar winner for his short film “Skin,” with a script from “Florence Foster Jenkins” writer Nicholas Martin. The US pre-sale on the project, from the UK’s Embankment Films, was negotiated with Bleecker and ShivHans by ICM Partners and CAA Media Finance on behalf of producer Michael Kuhn of Qwerty.
