Gene Hackman's The Poseidon Adventure Performance Helped Legitimize An Entire Genre
Image
In hindsight, the American cinema of the 1970s has two major legacies attached to it. On the one hand, there's the American New Wave aka the New Hollywood movement, in which "Five Easy Pieces," "Klute," "The French Connection," and other films like them eschewed the mainstream studio filmmaking formula in favor of telling stories that were creatively daring and heartfelt. On the other, there's the dawn of the blockbuster, a trend that continues to this day and whose beginning is most often attributed to Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" from 1975. But while "Jaws" gets the lion's share of the credit for birthing the blockbuster, a good dollop of credit must also go to the other populist trend in American cinema during the decade: the disaster movie.

The disaster film had been around before the '70s in one form or another, but it's the version that was popularized during that decade...

The Best Martyrs in Disaster Movies
Image
1972’s The Poseidon Adventure was the second release, following 1970’s Airport, in the Golden Age of disaster films. These movies drew in some of Hollywood’s most famous stars, finding themselves in earthquakes (Earthquake), burning buildings (The Towering Inferno), and more. The Poseidon Adventure found some of the 1970s most famous names aboard the ill-fated SS Poseidon, overturned by a tsunami en route to Athens: Ernest Borgnine, Red Buttons, Shelley Winters, Gene Hackman, and Pamela Sue Martin, among others. The story finds a small group of survivors climbing to the top of the ship, formerly the bottom, to seek help. As they make their way, a few of the survivors perish, but one death, in particular, is indicative of the genre’s need for a martyr character: Gene Hackman’s Rev. Frank Scott, who leaps across a pool of flaming oil to turn off a valve that is preventing the group from going any further.

The Stunt Players Directory Facebook page confirmed his death, writing: “We are saddened to hear of the passing of legendary stuntman Ernie Orsatti. To Find a Man
Pamela Sue Martin
A sweet, poignant little movie that hasn’t been on anybody’s radar since it sank from view in 1972. Notable for its frank treatment of teen sexuality and abortion, this is the kind of studio movie they stopped making a few years later. Pamela Sue Martin’s film debut and a Us entry in the Cannes Film Festival. The movie’s in color but this trailer, taken from a substandard VHS source, is black-and-white and bears the exploitation title Sex and the Teenager.

If you don’t like the humor in the 1966 comedy Don’t Worry We’ll Think of a Title, you don’t have enough borscht under your belt. The CW's Nancy Drew: Grade It!
Nancy Drew may be one of pop culture’s best-known detectives, but she isn’t exactly in a sleuthing mood atop the premiere of her new CW series. “I don’t go searching in the dark anymore — not after the darkness found me,” she explains, alluding to the one mystery no one was able to crack: a way to stop her mother from dying of cancer.

With her sleuthing days firmly behind her, Nancy — who’s in the midst of a responsible gap year in her hometown of Horseshoe Bay before heading off to college — is now working as a...

Kayti Burt Jul 19, 2019

Will the Hardy Boys show up on Nancy Drew? The cast and the creators of Nancy Drew were at Sdcc to talk all things Drew.

The cast and creators of Nancy Drew, the upcoming adaptation of the classic book series, were on hand at Comic-Con to give the audience a sneak peek into what to expect when the series premieres on The CW in October. In addition to screening the show's pilot episode, the panel discussed the connections to the original canon, as well as how the story has been modernized for today's audience.

Nancy Drew first premiered as a character in fiction in 1930, spun off as a female counterpart to the popular amateur detective mystery characters The Hardy Boys, who had their own book series which begun in 1927. When asked if there's any chance we might see The Hardy Boys appear in the Nancy Drew TV series,...

‘Nancy Drew’ EPs Talk Diverse Take On Classic Novels; New Series Explores Teen Sleuth’s “Darkness” – Comic-Con
Riley Smith, Leah Lewis, Tunji Kasim, Alex Saxon, Maddison Jaizani, and Kennedy McMann in Nancy Drew (2019)
In the spirit of Riverdale, The CW’s new take on the classic Nancy Drew is darker, more supernatural and little sexier than the teen sleuth that we are used to. Comic-Con fangirls and fanboys were treated to a sneak peek at the pilot episode of the new series from showrunner Melinda Hsu-Taylor as well as executive producers Noga Landau and Stephanie Savage which was a spooky hybrid of Veronica Mars and Charmed. The trio was on hand in Ballroom 20 at San Diego along with the new Nancy Drew Kennedy McMann as well as series stars Leah Lewis, Maddison Jaizani, Alex Saxon and Tunji Kasim to talk about this new take on a Ya classic.

Hsu-Taylor points out that she did read the original series and connected with the character but wanted to diversify the cast for the new iteration. Yes, the Nancy remains white,...

A movie that could just as easily qualify for Tfh’s Movies You Never Heard Of, Peter Hyams’ little-seen teen soaper is a sensitive look at life in a girl’s school circa 1955. Featuring TV stars Pamela Sue Martin and Parker Stevenson, the movie is an uncharacteristically modest effort from action maven Hyams and it deserves a bigger audience.

Nancy Drew Recast: Scott Wolf to Replace Freddie Prinze Jr.
We have our first big recasting ahead of the 2019-20 season!

The first show making a change is The CW's new take on Nancy Drew.

Per THR, Freddie Prinze Jr. is exiting the new supernatural drama.

Everwood veteran, Scott Wolf, has been drafted in to replace Freddie.

According to the report, the recasting was amicable, and it comes as the producers have decided to go in a different direction for the role of Carson Drew, the father of the show's titular crime-solver.

17 Times Actors Were Replaced Mid-Series
Actors leave their shows for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes they have another role they want to pursue. Sometimes it is about the show; actors do not always like the roles they play or the people they work with.

Sometimes they leave for personal reasons such as to be with their families. And sometimes, as with the recently late and great Luke Perry, they leave the show because they have left this world behind.

Related: Enjoy Unlimited access to thousands of Movies and TV shows with Amazon Prime Video. Watch Anywhere. Cancel Anytime!

But the show must go on. When an actor wants or needs to leave a show, the writers have to cook up a reason for their departure. They might kill the character off, have the character move away, or they might simply replace the actor.

Seeing a new actor playing a beloved role can be unsettling but also intriguing.

"Nancy Drew": The CW Pilot Casts Original Nancy Drew Pamela Sue Martin
Pamela Sue Martin at an event for Poseidon (2006)
The CW’s “Nancy Drew” pilot has added a familiar face to its cast.

Pamela Sue Martin, who portrayed the amateur teen detective in the first TV adaptation “The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries” in 1977, has been cast in the reboot as Harriet Grosset, a small-town psychic who offers her talents to help Nancy investigate a murder — and ends up delivering an otherworldly clue that neither of them bargained for.

Newcomer Kennedy McMann is taking up the mantle as the latest version of the classic literary character. McMann’s Drew is described as a brilliant teen sleuth whose college plans and sense of self have been derailed by a recent family tragedy – but when she ends up a suspect in a murder, it rekindles her love for detective work, even though the clues lead her to believe that a long-dead local girl may be the killer.

It Came From The Tube: Bay Coven (1987)
I sure love me some witches. I especially adore the satanic kind, pentagrams, candles, and the whole shmear. Welcome to Bay Coven (1987), where the tropes are oh so familiar yet warm and snuggly like a quilted comforter.

Originally broadcast on Sunday, October 25th, Bay Coven was part of the NBC Sunday Night at the Movies, and was summarily trounced by Game 7 of the World Series as the *checks notes* Minnesotans beat the other ones to win the cup. Or something. Anyhoo, for those who were into horror, especially so close to Halloween, Bay Coven (Aka Bay Cove) was a fun treat; nothing original at all, but merely the next in the hallowed tradition of what I like to call (as of right now) the Killer Hospitality sub-genre: Rosemary’s Baby, Crowhaven Farm, and The Dark Secret of Harvest Home all setting out the chips and dip for what Bay Coven has in store.

Dynasty (1981)
The Carringtons are back, and the drama looks juicier than ever.

Ahead of the premiere of The CW’s Dynasty remake, People Now caught up with actress Liz Gillies, who plays Fallon Carrington in the revival of the ’80s classic primetime soap opera chronicling the ongoing feud between two wealthy families, the Carringtons and the Colbys.

Executive-produced by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (who helmed Gossip Girl and The O.C.), the revival is somewhat of a departure from the original — which Gillies, 24, applauds.

“We had to make a lot of changes, because if you go back and watch the original Dynasty,...

Dynasty: revisiting an 80s soap cheese-fest
Catherine Pearson Oct 11, 2017

With the remake of the 1980s soap opera arriving today, what better time to take a nostalgia-filled lookback at Dynasty?

Cast your mind back, if you can, to the year of 1981. Bucks Fizz, Adam and the Ants and Soft Cell were storming the charts, Only Fools And Horses aired its first series on BBC One and Gregory’s Girl was playing in a cinema near you. Meanwhile, stateside, ABC had cooked up a suitably glamorous and scandalous competitor to Dallas, the CBS drama packed full of Stetsons and suspense. The world may have recently discovered who shot J.R., but there was still plenty of room for the Carringtons.

Enter Dynasty, a show based around the business and family of oil tycoon Blake Carrington (John Forsythe) whose recent marriage to his former secretary Krystle (Linda Evans) was making waves within the family mansion. With the Colby family...

Dynasty (1981)
The CW Aims to Reboot Campy ’80s Soap ‘Dynasty’ With a Modern Story
Dynasty (1981)
Break out the mud (but get rid of the shoulder pads): The CW is prepping a new, modern remake of the classic primetime soap “Dynasty.”

Among the changes: In this version, Krystle (originally played by Linda Evans) is now Cristal, a Latina woman marrying into the Carrington clan.

Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are developing the new show, along with Sallie Patrick (“Revenge”). The husband-wife duo who originally created “Dynasty,” Esther Shapiro and Richard Shapiro, are also attached as executive producers.

The “modernized reboot” will still feature the gist of the 1980s original. Here’s the logline: “[Dynasty] follows two of America’s wealthiest families, the Carringtons and the Colbys, as they feud for control over their fortune and their children. The series will be told primarily through the perspectives of two women at odds: Fallon Carrington — daughter of billionaire Blake Carrington — and her soon-to-be stepmother, Cristal — a Hispanic woman...

To Find a Man
A sweet, poignant little movie that hasn't been on anybody's radar since it sank from view in 1972. Notable for its frank treatment of teen sexuality and abortion, this is the kind of studio movie they stopped making a few years later. Pamela Sue Martin's film debut and a Us entry in the Cannes Film Festival. The movie's in color but this trailer, taken from a substandard vhs source, is black-and-white and bears the exploitation title Sex and the Teenager.

Dynasty (1981)
Dynasty's Most Infamous Cliffhanger Aired 30 Years Ago
Dynasty (1981)
On May 18, 1985, Dynasty concluded its fifth and highest-ever-rated season with a cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers: the Moldavian wedding massacre.

Amanda (Catherine Oxenberg), long-lost daughter to Alexis (Joan Collins) and Blake (John Forsythe), is marching down the aisle, soon to wed Prince Michael (Michael Praed), of the European nation of Moldavia. But before the ceremony can conclude, terrorists spray the chapel with bullets, and the season's final moments show the cast lying bloodied and lifeless – but still looking glamorous, of course.

The episode sparked viewer concern for the Carrington clan and their associates. Who could possibly survive? In September, the sixth-season premiere revealed that,...

These Ratchet Republicans Are Too Much To Handle
Republican ratchetness is a serious ailment that affects dozens of politicians each year. It’s currently hitting Gov. Mike Pence (Indiana) hard, given his state’s controversial religious freedom law that basically means business owners can turn away Lgbt customers because the Bible tells them so. It’s also taking a toll on embattled Rep. Aaron Schock (Illinois) who resigned from his House seat over an ethics scandal. Texas Senator Ted Cruz recently announced his presidential bid, which means his ratchetness is just beginning — he did call climate change activists “flat-Earthers” after all. However, this stuff is just child’s play compared to what other right-winged suits have done in the past. (We’re looking at you, Mark Sanford.)

From sex scandals to homophobic comments, these politicians represent the essence of Republican ratchetry: ignorance, stupidity, and just a bad moral compass. Isn’t it ironic these conservatives are engaging in some very un-conservative behavior?...

The Cast of Dynasty Reunites on Home & Family (Video)
Dynasty (1981)
[Youtube "HvP7yqoHhmo"] CBS may have had the Ewings, but ABC ruled with the Carringtons and the Colbys. Five actors from ABC's long-running hit Dynasty gathered for a mini-reunion on Home & Family to talk about the prime time drama that made them household names. Even though the drama was a hit for many years, there wasn't always a constant flow of champagne behind-the-scenes. "We were under a great deal of pressure. Anyone who does television knows," recalls John James, who played Jeff Colby. He was joined on the show that was taped Friday by Pamela Sue Martin (Fallon Carrington Colby), Al Corley (Steven...

The Original 'Too Many Cooks': These Fake 'Dynasty' Credits
Like you, I lapped up every uproarious actor name and dada plot twist of "Too Many Cooks," Adult Swim's bizarre parody of '80s TV opening credits. But that video also reminded me of one of the internet's true lost gems: these fake opening titles to "Dynasty." The comedy outfit Fatal Farm made a number of these parodies, including a "Golden Girls" edition and a "Doogie Howser" riff featuring, like "Too Many Cooks," a knife-wielding credits killer. Enjoy this incredible YouTube moment. Pamela Sue Martin, we love you.   ...

Terence Winkless Talks 'The Nest', Cockroach Wrangling, and Roger Corman
The Nest (1987)
Shout! Factory’s “Scream Factory” arm continues to release some of the most awesomely obscure and beloved horror titles ever and this coming Tuesday February 19 is no exception. Terence Winkless’ cult cockroach classic The Nest finally gets the high-definition treatment in the form of an excellent Blu-ray+DVD Combo Pack that features a commentary track from the director himself. Tasked with making a film about man-eating cockroaches, Winkless makes what is easily the very best (and probably the only) film about killer cockroaches ever made. It’s a horror fan’s dream come true. That is, if your dreams consist of a terrifying Man-Roach and a healthy dose of gore. Here at FEARnet, that’s all we dream about.

FEARnet sat down with Winkless to discuss working with Roger Corman, wrangling cockroaches in the middle of the night, and the infamous Cat-Roach.

FEARnet: I just re-watched The Nest again the...
