Exclusive: While he hasn’t yet found the actress who’ll play Joan of Arc in his epic Jehanne d’Arc, Baz Luhrmann found an exceptional young voice to help him unlock the screenplay. That would be Ava Pickett, a playwright who wrote the script with Luhrmann.
Here’s how impressed the filmmaker was with Pickett: Recently, pretty much the whole of Warner Bros shut down as the entire teams from production to marketing and publicity headed over to Chateau Marmont. In the room where the first draft of Rebel Without a Cause was read aloud for Warner Bros brass, Pickett read the first draft of Jehanne d’Arc. Luhrmann and design partner Catherine Martin backed her up with a visual presentation.
Start date for the film isn’t quite there, Luhrmann told Deadline. That depends on the casting of the pivotal role of the teenaged French peasant who believed...

Charred Oscar Destroyed in L.A. Wildfires Turns Up at Chateau Marmont, Months After Fake Viral Photo
In the wake of January’s catastrophic Palisades Fire, an image featuring a charred Academy Award sitting atop a pile of rubble went viral and became a symbol of the devastation, not only for the area but for its impact on Hollywood professionals. Many industry insiders reposted the image complete with emotional captions including veteran actress Isabella Rossellini, who had just been nominated for an Oscar for Conclave. The image, however, turned out to be fake and AI generated.
Fast-forward to Wednesday when a real charred Oscar turned up at Chateau Marmont, where it was pictured on the famed hotel terrace during a starry event hosted by Anna Wintour and Vogue to announce the details for the forthcoming Vogue World: Hollywood. It belongs to four-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood, who lost her home in the Palisades Fire as she confirmed during a poignant moment at the podium alongside fellow costume...

Anna Wintour doesn’t come to Los Angeles often, so when she touches down, it usually means there’s important fashion business on the horizon.
That proved to be the case Wednesday when the global editorial director of Vogue and chief content officer at Condé Nast assumed position at a podium situated on the Chateau Marmont terrace just before 11 a.m. in front of the city’s fashion elite. But a few faces in the crowd — specifically Governor Gavin Newsom, mogul Casey Wasserman and costume designers Arianne Phillips, Colleen Atwood and Ruth E. Carter — signaled that the official business would stretch beyond fashion.
“We are thrilled to be here in Los Angeles, a city we love, that we admire, which gives us so much and has been constantly in our thoughts since the winter. This is a moment when coming to Los Angeles, joining in the effort to rebuild and...

Anna Wintour announced today that the fourth annual Vogue World will take place in Hollywood on October 26 at the Paramount Pictures Studio Lot. Celebrating the “conversation between film and fashion,” 100% of the ticket proceeds will go to the Entertainment Community fund, with a focus on supporting costuming professionals impacted by the Los Angeles wildfires.
“Vogue World: Hollywood will be a one-night-only show with a huge cast of models and actors, dancers, musicians and surprises, and it will set great film costumes next to brilliant fashion collections,” said Wintour. “By mixing fashion with the arts and culture in the center of a city, and by raising funds for a cause, Vogue World has become a runway show-as-rallying cry, a way to fix the attention of a huge global audience, to bring awareness, and sound an unmistakable note of positivity, creativity, and hope.”

Hollywood director Baz Luhrmann has spent over 30 years developing a film about the legendary Joan of Arc. The project is finally moving forward after Luhrmann secured backing from Warner Bros. The historical epic will focus on themes of empowering youth and societal change that still resonate today.
Luhrmann hopes to refresh the iconic story of Joan of Arc for contemporary times. He will draw from Thomas Keneally’s novel “Blood Red, Sister Rose” for source material. The film aims to portray Joan not just as a religious figure, but as a teenage girl who must find her identity during a time of war.
Joan of Arc led the French army to a major victory against English forces at Orléans in 1429 at a young age. Tragically, she faced execution for heresy just two years later. Luhrmann sees parallels between the challenges Joan faced and issues important to youth today. He wants...

Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Joan of Arc movie has been in the works for decades.
“This is something he’s talked about for 30 years,” his wife and creative partner Catherine Martin told me Saturday at the Lacma Art+Film Gala, where Luhrmann was honored alongside sculptor Simone Leigh.
The teenaged Joan of Arc became a heroine after leading the French army to victory in Orléans in 1429 before being burned at the stake in 1431. Warner Bros. confirmed in September that Luhrmann was taking on the epic tale of France’s national heroine and saint Joan of Arc.
The film is based on “Blood Red, Sister Rose,” the 1974 novel about Joan of Arc by “Schindler’s List” author Thomas Keneally.
“I almost did Alexander the Great and then at one point I was going down the road on Napoleon, but more than ever, I realized I was waiting for the right time to...

Lacma’s Art + Film gala entered its brat era over the weekend.
Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s marquee fundraiser took place on the grounds of the L.A. cultural institution on Saturday night as the rebellious spirit of its musical headliner Charli Xcx and her culture shifting brat album seemed to permeate the festivities. The carpet got a green-hued makeover, Anna Wintour praised honoree Baz Luhrmann’s frenetic creative spirit and how he once convinced Rihanna to dance on a table at the Met Gala, Kim Kardashian caused a stir by wearing another rare piece of fashion history and Chloe Sevigny demanded the crowd “make some fucking noise” for Charli, who turned Lacma into an electric after hours with a quick set featuring her Sweat Tour mate Troye Sivan. It even rained a little, a very brat-coded thing for Mother Nature to do in a city like Los Angeles.

Besides Hannibal Lecter's sneering line, "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti," the sight of the serial killer Buffalo Bill (aka Jame Gumb) leaning over a giant well and commanding his terrified captive, "It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again," is one of the most memorable moments from Jonathan Demme's "The Silence of the Lambs." Jame Gumb's beautiful Victorian style home, complete with a secret well in the basement, is the perfectly sinister place to torture his victims. Conveniently, he was able to weasel his way into occupying the home from his first victims' employer, Mrs. Lippman.
Many of Buffalo Bill's disturbing behaviors are taken from other real-life serial killers. Ted Bundy would fake injuries or disability to lure unsuspecting women into his car, similar to how Jame Gumb...

I once performed in a professional production of "Silence!," the musical parody of "Silence of the Lambs." I was cast in a dual role as Fredrica Bimmel and Catherine Martin — the "great big fat person" Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb coveted before murdering and dumping her in a body of water, and the woman he later kidnapped and kept in his basement hole before being rescued by Clarice Starling.
In the movie, Gumb asks Catherine if she's "about a size 14" before kidnapping her. In the musical, he has a hoedown song and dance number titled, "Are You About A Size 14?" featuring lyrics like "If you want to find the one / You need a girl who weighs a ton." I love the show and I loved playing the characters, but I couldn't help but laugh about the ridiculousness of it as I was and continue to be a size 22. In the world of "Silence of the Lambs,...

It's Valentine's Day, and love is in the air. To commemorate the occasion, let's consider this year's Academy Award nominations through the prism of romance, searching for couples among the contenders. Recognizing lovers together has been an Oscar tradition since the very start, from Lunt and Fontaine's matching Best Actor and Actress nomination in 1931 to last year's Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin. Even so, this season feels especially prone to honoring couples. I could find six of them while perusing the list, including in the Best Picture race. “Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” and “Asteroid City” all earned nominations from the Critics Choice Awards for Best Production Design. That bodes well for each film’s Oscar chances this year. Martin is at the Red Sea Film Festival with Luhrmann, whom she started working with on his debut feature, 1992’s “Strictly Ballroom.” Since then, there have been a series of projects marked by their striking visual style, netting Martin a number of nominations and awards.
She spoke to Variety.
Following last year’s “Elvis,” what do you think will be your next project?
Baz hasn’t made any decisions. And I assiduously try not to get attached to any project when he’s in the process of deciding what he’s going to do. Because invariably, the one that I become attached to is not the one we end up doing.

The Aussies took over Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Film Festival this evening as Elvis filmmaker Baz Luhrmann sat down for a career Q&a with actor Chris Hemsworth.
“We’re a couple of Aussies telling Aussie stories,” Luhrmann described their chat, which was shaped around their experiences working in their home country and branching out internationally as artists.
Hemsworth told the packed crowd here in Jeddah that he’d arrived in the city from Brazil Comic Con, where he’d debuted the first trailer for Furiosa, the latest edition of the Mad Max series from George Miller — another Aussie that the pair said inspired them both to try their hand at craft.
“45 years ago, I saw George Miller make this film as a kid in Australia and it’s what Akira Kurosawa would have referred to as an immaculate reality. That inspired me and all of us as Australians...

Sure, 28 Oscar nominations and 17 wins aren’t to be sniffed at. But the remarkable thing about Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy is that it should have been nominated for more. Only one of the cast was nominated for an Oscar across all three films — that was for Best Supporting Actor for Sir Ian McKellen in 2002 for “The Fellowship of the Ring” — while there were a few other curious snubs that, in hindsight, just don’t make sense. So, there was actually more room to nominate this rightly-heralded trilogy of astounding films. With that in mind, here are five more Oscar nominations “The Lord of the Rings” should have landed.
Best Original Score: “The Two Towers”
The music of “The Lord of the Rings” has gone down as one of the best scores ever committed to film. Howard Shore‘s adored score is so top drawer it leaves you clamoring for more.

In 2004, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” became the film with joint-most Oscar wins of all time with a whopping 11 victories, matching the total tallies of both “Titanic” and “Ben-Hur.” Those 11 Academy Awards capped off a hugely successful trilogy of movies that collectively snagged 28 Oscar nominations and 17 wins in total. But yet… Peter Jackson‘s film series, adapted from the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, is so, so good that, well, it could have won more. That sounds greedy and over the top, of course, but if you take a look at each film’s nominations, it’s actually very feasible that any one of the three films could have turned the bid into a win. So, with that in mind, here are five Oscar nominations that “The Lord of the Rings” films could and perhaps should have turned into victories.

Brand ambassadors just don’t get better than Nicole Kidman, said Raynald Aeschlimann, the Switzerland-based CEO of Omega, at Thursday night’s party to celebrate the opening of Planet Omega, an exhibition highlighting the history of the brand that’s open to the public in New York City through November 19.
“She’s absolutely at the top of her career as an actress and a producer, and for 20 years she’s been very important to us,” Aeschlimann told The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet. “We were just talking about our journey together, and it’s amazing that she decided 20 years ago to be on our side, because we weren’t the Omega of today.”
For Kidman, the feeling is mutual. “I’ve been with them not only because they’re classic, and I’m always drawn to classic lines, but also because they’re quality and they’re good people,...

Baz Luhrmann (Elvis) revisits his Australia feature film and transforms the nearly three-hour epic into the six-episode series Faraway Downs. The limited series will include an hour of footage that didn’t make the film’s final cut, as well as a different ending.
“I got the idea and started to relook at the footage and realized I’ve shot enough to do it as episodic storytelling through a revisiting of the piece, not necessarily as a better film than Australia, but a different variation on the themes,” explained Luhrmann in an interview with TheWrap. “I was able to use the strengths of episodic storytelling to breathe those things out and explore them in a stronger way.”
The feature film, and now the Hulu limited series it spawned, stars Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Bryan Brown, Brandon Walters, and Ben Mendelsohn. 2008’s Australia, which currently sits at 54% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes,...

Baz Luhrmann is returning to the Outback (and the cutting room floor) for limited series “Faraway Downs.”
The auteur recut 2008 epic “Australia” into a six-part Hulu limited series. The show follows an English aristocrat (Nicole Kidman) and a rough-hewn cattle drover (Hugh Jackman) who join forces to protect the million-acre cattle ranch of her late husband.
The official synopsis reads: Lady Sarah Ashley (Kidman) travels halfway across the world to confront her wayward husband and sell an unusual asset: a million-acre cattle ranch in the Australian Outback called Faraway Downs. Following the death of her husband, a ruthless Australian cattle baron, King Carney (Bryan Brown), plots to take her land and she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn cattle drover (Jackman) to protect her ranch. The first trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s “Faraway Downs” has arrived — watch it at the top of the page right now.
Starring Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Bryan Brown, Brandon Walters, Ben Mendelsohn, the six-part miniseries is a reworking of Luhrmann’s 2008 film “Australia.” Recut by Luhrmann to produce what he calls a “richer telling,” it premieres Nov. 26 on Hulu.

Baz Luhrmann is looking at the benefits of streaming content.
The “Elvis” director recut his 2008 epic “Australia” for a Hulu limited series titled “Faraway Downs.” The film followed an English aristocrat (Nicole Kidman) who inherits a cattle range run by a cattle drover (Hugh Jackman). The limited series will have a new ending and a new soundtrack; “Australia” originally shot three endings, with only one making it into the theatrical release.
“I was inspired to re-approach my film ‘Australia’ to create ‘Faraway Downs’ because of the way episodic storytelling has been reinvigorated by the streaming world,” Luhrmann said in a press statement. “With over two million feet of film from the original piece, my team and I were able to revisit anew the central themes of the work.”
Six-episode limited series “Faraway Downs” will premiere at the closing night of the inaugural SXSW Sydney Screen Festival October 21, with Luhrmann in attendance.

I love Baz Luhrmann. Even when I don't like his movies, I love Baz Luhrmann. In our age, where big-budget movies are systematically stripped of style, personality, and beauty, the Australian auteur is one of the few filmmakers out there able to make every single frame of his motion pictures as dynamic and opulent as they can possibly be. He's a maximalist working on a grand scale, and no one else can make a movie remotely comparable to what he does. Every auteur has their imitators, but Luhrmann feels like a rarity, where his style is so singular and difficult to conceive that nobody even really tries.
As I said, though, not every Luhrmann picture is a home run. He constantly takes big swings, but if you want to be accurate in your baseball metaphors, you must acknowledge that not every swing connects. Because he is such a maximalist, the...

Since the early 2000s, there’s been a disappointing trend in movies away from full-fledged opening title sequences. Whether because of the desire to jump straight into the action or the impulse to keep the audience focused on a film’s story (rather than its creators), elaborate, artful opening title sequences, once commonplace, have become increasingly rare—which is too bad.
Great opening title sequences do a whole lot more than just show the names and guild memberships of those behind-the-scenes folks who make it all happen. They can do the critical early-movie work of establishing a movie’s mood and texture,...

Below-the-line categories at the Oscars just don’t get the attention they deserve. The artistry on display helps to bring to life a movie. Visual effects are such a key part of the storytelling of “A New Hope.” Costume design is vital to the storytelling of “Phantom Thread.” And production design is so key in “Parasite,” “Avatar,” and “The Lord of the Rings” in so many different ways.
With that in mind, let’s take a look a closer look at some of the below-the-line categories, starting here with Best Production Design. We’re going to look at the last 10 winners in this category to work out if there is a pattern in the way the academy awards certain winners. They love biopics in the acting categories, for example, so what are they partial to in Production Design? Take a look at the below chart.

Back in 2021, Chris Rowan, an art director and prop stylist for film and television, purchased the house that was shown to be the home of serial killer Buffalo Bill in Jonathan Demme‘s 1991 classic The Silence of the Lambs (watch it Here), then turned it into a bed and breakfast. This September, Brooke Smith – who played Buffalo Bill captive Catherine Martin – will be returning to that house for the first time since production wrapped. Fans who visit the house during the three days Smith will be there will have the chance to get her autograph and take a picture with her in the well pit in the basement! Fans can also get guided tours of the house , which is located at 8 Circle St. in Perryopolis, Pennsylvania.
Of course, the most interesting part of the house is the basement, and it sounds like Rowan has really made it up right. He...

For the first time since the filming of the horror classic, The Silence of the Lambs actor Brooke Smith, who infamously played the unforgettable role of Catherine Martin, will return to visit Buffalo Bill’s House, the real location where the climax to the film was shot!
Brooke last stepped foot inside “Buffalo Bill’s House” over thirty years ago during the scene where she is rescued from the infamous ‘well’ in which she is held captive by the serial killer Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs. In that scene, Brooke is led out of the house and through its doors into the arms of her mother, Senator Ruth Martin (played by Diane Baker).
Fans are now able to purchase a ticket for a meet and greet with Brooke Smith during the weekend of September 22-24 (multiple time slots are available).

Exclusive: Moulin Rouge! The Musical, based on Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 luscious pop classic movie starring Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor and Jim Broadbent, has recouped its costs — not only the $28 million Broadway price tag, but it also recouped sizable sums in London’s West End and Australia.
Luhrmann tells me that it’s “so gratifying that breaking even is such a big deal in the theater.”
As an antipodean, he’s especially gratified with Moulin Rouge!’s hit status in Australia.
“Australia, the English one, the Broadway one — they’ve all done it,” and “that’s down to the relentless drive that Carmen and her team in Australia, New York and London had to fulfill the dictum that the show must go on,” he says with brio in referring to Carmen Pavlovic, CEO of Sydney-based Global Creatures, the principal production company behind Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
“Check with Carmen,” Luhrmann suggests.

Kevin Bakhurst, the newly appointed director-general of Ireland’s national broadcaster Rte, has stood down the company’s entire executive board following a pay scandal involving the broadcaster’s lead presenter.
Bakhurst announced the move in an email to Rte staff on Monday morning, his first day in office. In the email, Bakhurst said an interim leadership team would be appointed to continue running the organization before a permanent board is set, the BBC reported.
Bakhurst, who had stints in senior roles at the BBC and UK media regulator Ofcom, took over from former director general Dee Forbes, who resigned last month. Forbes’s resignation followed after it was discovered that RTÉ made undisclosed payments to its top presenter. An audit of the organization’s finances found presenter Ryan Tubridy was paid €345,000 more than what was declared publicly between 2017 and 2022.
Tubridy presented the Ryan Tubridy Show on RTÉ Radio 1 alongside...

The way that Clarice Starling stumbles upon the home of the villainous Buffalo Bill is one of The Silence of the Lambs’ most inventive twists. The cross-cutting between Clarice arriving at Bill’s house while Jack Crawford and his FBI Hostage Rescue Team go to the wrong location is one of the movie's most iconic moments. It sets the stage for the film’s nail-biting finale, shot in terrifying night vision, in which Clarice chases Bill into his underground lair. But it’s not conspicuous how Clarice managed to find Bill in the first place.
The Silence of the Lambs is the only horror movie to ever win Best Picture at the Academy Awards, and one of the few films – along with It Happened One Night and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest – to win all five major categories. Cate Blanchett has received Oscar nominations for a variety of roles in movies ranging from critically panned duds to universally praised gems. Throughout her career, Blanchett has earned eight Academy Award nominations, including five nods for Best Actress and three for Best Supporting Actress. At the 2008 ceremony, Blanchett received a nomination in each of these categories, making her one of the few actors to be nominated twice in the same Oscars ceremony. Along with Paul Newman and Al Pacino, Blanchett is also one of the few actors to be Oscar-nominated twice for the same role, with her dual nods for the Elizabeth movies.
While costume designer and art director Catherine Martin holds the title of most-awarded Australian artist at the Oscars, Blanchett is the most-nominated Australian. Blanchett is a rare case of an actor who can switch seamlessly between high-grossing blockbuster franchises like the MCU and award-worthy arthouse fare like...
