Tom Hanks opened the 2024 season finale of “Saturday Night Live” and could barely get out a “hello” before the audience in Studio 8H went wild with excitement. Sitting in a leather chair and wearing his Five-Timers Club jacket, the actor said, “Hello, I’m Tom Hanks.”
Explaining the origin of the esteemed club, Hanks said, “In December 1990, I created the SNL Five-Timers Club, an ingeniously lazy way to avoid writing a monologue. It has grown into one of the most exclusive clubs in the industry. And tonight, we are here to induct our newest member.”
Paul Rudd, a fellow member, showed up onstage, holding a cocktail. “Hey, Tom, I gotta ask. Who the hell are you talking to here, pal?” Rudd asked.
“Oh, I’m sorry, I’ve done so many documentaries whenever I sit in a leather chair, I just naturally assume I’m in one,” Hanks replied.
“Well,...

Saturday Night Live lined up Tom Hanks, Tina Fey, Paul Rudd, Melissa McCarthy and others to welcome Martin Short into the “Five-Timers Club,” or those who have hosted the show at least five times.
“I just want to say I am so happy to be here for this moment, so I would like to present to you the official Five Timer’s Club jacket in exactly your size — a women’s small,” said Jimmy Fallon.
Short then struggled a bit to get the jacket on.
“From the bottom of my heart, I just want to say, I love most of you so much,” Short told the star-studded grouping.
The cameos were in keeping with the show’s 50th season, which has featured appearances from hosts and former cast members.
Also appearing in the opener were Scarlett Johansson (shutting the door on Colin Jost), Kristen Wiig, Emma Stone, John Mulaney and Alec Baldwin.
Hanks noted at the outset that in December 1990, he created the SNL Five Timers Club, “an ingeniously lazy way to avoid writing a monologue. It has grown into one of the most exclusive clubs in our industry.”
The opener, in a bar lounge setting, was a bit of a roast of Short.
He said to Fey, “You are one of the rarest things in Hollywood — a writer who’s attractive enough to be on camera.”
“And you are one of the least rare things in Hollywood — a loud man,” she replied.
Short got in some roasting of Steve Martin, his Only Murders in the Building co-star, when Hanks told him that they were serving a signature cocktail, the Marty-tini.
“You know, it’s often paired with our Steve Martini, but tonight, we are serving it solo,” Hanks told him.
“And I bet it’s even better on its own,” Short replied.
There was one political reference during the skit.
At one point, Wiig revealed that she and Short “took a hot yoga class together, where we made love and got kicked out…And then we both voted for Trump.”
“Don’t tell them that,” Short shot back.
“It’s Ok. In this club you can be completely honest. Anyone else want to try?” Wiig said.
“I’ll go,” Rudd said. He then revealed: “Ant-Man’s powers aren’t good.”
“I’ll go,” Fey said. “It’s me that’s flying those drones. All of them.”
“I’ll go,” Hanks said. “I never had Covid.”
“I’ll go,” Johansson said. “I have Covid right now.”
“I’ll go,” Baldwin said. “I have way too many children.”...

The question has been raised as to why there is so much public angst and emotion over the Casey Anthony trial and the verdict of not guilty handed down last week. How did a local or, at best, a regional murder trial come to capture the attention of an entire nation?
The fact is this is nothing new. It is an old phenomenon, always with us and driven by the media of the day. About the turn of the last century,...
