'Prison Break' Leaves Netflix Next Month
Image
It’s been only a year since Prison Break returned to Netflix globally, allowing subscribers outside the US to enjoy all five seasons and ninety episodes, which we’ve now learned will be leaving the streamer again soon. Created by Paul Scheuring for Fox, the crime drama debuted on August 29, 2005, and concluded with a nine-episode fifth season that ran from April 4 to May 30, 2017. Later on, it made its way to Netflix, where it was initially removed internationally in January 2022, but returned in September 2024, months after Netflix US re-added the show in July.

As part of a content licensing deal with Disney for legacy Fox titles, Netflix re-added the hit action thriller to its catalog for a single year, which is set to end next month. With that, Prison Break will not be available to subscribers in all international regions, including Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, all of Latin America, Europe,...

Is The Twits About to Dethrone KPop Demon Hunters’ Netflix Throne? New Update Revealed
Image
The acclaimed musician David Byrne and singer Hayley Williams are producing the original music for Netflix‘s The Twits. Based on Roald Dahl’s 1980 novel of the same name, Netflix’s upcoming animated comedy is the first in a series of Roald Dahl projects coming soon to Netflix, including an animated Charlie and the Chocolate Factory project.

The film follows two orphans and magical animals as they take on the cruel Mr. and Mrs. Twit to save their town from chaos. And for this unique tale, Byrne has written and produced three songs: We’re Not Like Ev’ryone Else, Lullaby, and The Problem Is You.

All these songs are performed by the cast of the movie. Working alongside Byrne, Hayley Williams co-wrote and performed the end credits song for the animated movie, Open the Door. And the movie seems to have all the goods to be the next big...

David Byrne found it ‘fun’ to write music for upcoming movie The Twits
David Byrne found it “fun” to write music for upcoming movie The Twits. The Talking Heads musician, 72, teamed up with Hayley Williams, 35, for a new musical collaboration on , Netflix’s forthcoming animated adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl book, which is due to be released on 17 October. It marks the latest in a series of Dahl adaptations by the streaming platform. David told Variety: “This was a fun project. Like other Roald Dahl books, this one has its share of dreadful characters – this time two of them are front and centre. “Kids (and adults) love that they can vicariously imagine their own worst impulses played out, harmlessly, in a punky fun story. “So when I was approached to write some songs for this movie I immediately said, ‘Let me give it a try and see if you like what I come up with’.”Alongside the original score, David has written...

‘Cocaine Bear’ Hides a Powerful Exploration of Caregiving & Parental Love [The Lady Killers Podcast]
Darla Delgado
“What happened to feminism, huh? Is that dead?”

We use the term Mama Bear to describe a woman who appears cuddly and nurturing while interacting with her children, but will viciously attack anyone who puts them in danger. This ferocious streak often appears out of nowhere, shocking those who dare to cross her path. She will do anything to protect her young and doesn’t care how monstrous she appears to the rest of the world. When viewed from inside the circle of her protection, she’s an empowering embodiment of female strength. But should you find yourself on the outside, beware her fierce dedication and surprising power.

Elizabeth Banks’ 2023 film Cocaine Bear cuts to the heart of this fascinating archetype with an actual bear determined to protect her young. Inspired by a true story, this bombastic film explores a world of flawed caregivers who find themselves in the den of a deadly mama bear.

‘Practical Magic 2’ — Everything We Know So Far
Image
Something magical is brewing over at Warner Bros. Last year, it was first announced that Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock were nearing a deal with the studio to make a long-awaited follow-up to their witchy 1996 romantic fantasy “Practical Magic.” Then, teases trickled out for a few months before, and unexpectedly, WB dropped a teaser on social media in May, sending fans into a whirlwind.

The original film, which did not make a profit in its initial theatrical run, went on to become a staple of aughts cable television, brewing up generations of fans and becoming a cult favorite.

The logical next question, then, was who — besides the now-Oscar-winning Kidman and Bullock — would be returning to the quaint Owens sisters’ Massachusetts home for the next adventure. In 1998, the cast included Goran Visnjic, Dianne Wiest, Stockard Channing, Aidan Quinn, Evan Rachel Wood, and Margo Martindale. Visnjic’s character, Jimmy, would seem unlikely...

‘Prison Break’ Star, 55, Provides Definitive Answer on Potential Reboot Return
Image
Prison Break was revived — and not for the first time — on Netflix last year when it was added to the platform and topped Nielsen charts for months straight. This prompted Hulu to greenlight a Prison Break reboot near the end of 2024, one that reportedly had no plans to bring back any former Prison Break stars. However, this didn’t stop fans from speaking their mind, with many calling for original stars Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller to return as Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows. Purcell, who is also known for his work as Mick Rory in DC’s Arrowverse, decided he’s heard enough. Purcell took to his personal Instagram to definitively respond to the rumors, shutting them down and confirming he will not return in the Prison Break reboot.

The Prison Break reboot is reportedly set in the same universe as the original Prison Break, but featuring all-new characters.

Dexter Can’t Stay Dead. So Here Are 37 Thoughts From My Rewatch That I Couldn’t Keep to Myself
Image
You can’t keep a good serial killer down — especially not when there’s IP to exploit.

Dexter Morgan is set to return (again) in Dexter: Resurrection, despite being definitively killed off in New Blood and then casually voiceover-resurrected in Original Sin (a show I loved).

But before Showtime unpacks another bloody chapter, we took a trip down memory lane. And let’s just say… wow. The things we overlooked the first time around? Absolutely unhinged.

(Showtime/Screenshot)

Dexter is poised for yet another chapter. And frankly, it’s the perfect time to revisit the madness that got us here.

While rewatching the series, I noticed just how many moments — big, small, and plastic-wrapped — have aged into either brilliant nuance or total unhinged chaos.

From bizarre kill rituals to forgotten guest stars, these are the 37 things living rent-free in my head.

Days of Thunder: Before F1 rocked us, Tom Cruise took us for a ride
Image
This weekend sees the release of F1, a movie which reunites some of the important creatives before Top Gun: Maverick, notably director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Starring Brad Pitt, it feels very much like a Tom Cruise movie, minus Tom Cruise, but the superstar has been outspoken in his support of the project. In fact, he took to his Instagram today to pen a tribute to both F1 and his own attempt at racing epic, Days of Thunder, which turns thirty-five this week.

A post shared by Tom Cruise (@tomcruise)

1990’s Days of Thunder was the end of an era for Tom Cruise. It would be the last movie he’d make as part of his “youth” phase, which began with Risky Business. At the time, he was best known as the cocky young hot shot, but when this movie underperformed at the box office,...

How ‘BoJack Horseman’ Influenced Creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s New Show ‘Long Story Short’: ‘We Never Shied Away From the Specificity of Jokes’
Image
After the overwhelming success of “BoJack Horseman,” creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg returns with “Long Story Short,” a sitcom animated series centered on a Jewish family from Northern California that will premiere on Netflix on Aug. 22. The series, which unfolds across different timelines and emotional landscapes, finds its humor and heart in specificity, something Bob-Waksberg leans into unapologetically.

At this year’s Annecy Animation Festival, Bob-Waksberg sat down with Variety to discuss the show’s portrayal of Jewish identity, why specific stories work best and his new show’s adoption of a more grounded aesthetic.

Raphael Bob-Waksberg Credit: Netflix

Variety: This show feels more focused than “BoJack,” based on a single family from a very specific culture. Did that feel risky or liberating?

Raphael Bob-Waksberg: I wonder about that. I say this not to say you’re wrong, but maybe as a writer for Variety, “BoJack” might feel more accessible and broad.

‘Poker Face’ Baddie Eva Jade Halford Is Ready to Rise to the Top: The 12-Year-Old Star on Playing the Series’ Latest Twisted Villain
Image
Editor’s Note: The following story contains some spoilers for “Poker Face” Season 2, Episode 6.

Season 2, Episode 6 is not your typical episode of “Poker Face.” Charlie (Natasha Lyonne) has been working as lunch lady at a local elementary school, where she meets the terrifying Stephanie (Eva Jade Halford), a student whose ambition compels her to humiliate one of her peers and indirectly kill the class pet.

It’s a demanding role even on paper, and one brought to life superbly by the 12-year-old Halford (the episode premiered on her birthday), who goes toe to toe with Lyonne, Margo Martindale, and Adrienne C. Moore throughout the episode. It’s enough to shake a seasoned pro — but Halford is already on her way to being just that, having just wrapped “The Last Day” with Alicia Vikander, Victoria Pedretti, and Wagner Moura, from first-time feature director Rachel Rose. As a child, she’s used...

Charlie Takes on a Pint-Sized and Potent Villain in ‘Poker Face’ Episode 6 Clip — Watch
Image
Some of the killers in Rian Johnson’s “Poker Face” feel remorse — but not the latest. In an exclusive clip shared with IndieWire from the upcoming Season 2, Episode 6, “Sloppy Joseph,” Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne) faces off with eight-year-old Stephanie Pearce (Eva Jade Halford) — who couldn’t disagree more that it’s lonely at the top.

The clip shows Stephanie confronting Charlie in the bathroom, where Charlie begs her to reconsider what she’s done. “If you keep this up, you’re not gonna have a lot of friends,” Charlie says, hoping to appeal to the child’s need to be liked.

But Stephanie doesn’t need to be liked. What she needs, it would seem, are gold stars — but before laying out her ambitions unequivocally, she puts on a little performance. She turns away from Charlie, seemingly out of shame while she pretends to cry. “Maybe I say I don...

CBS Vs. Trump Flashback: Seven Times ‘The Good Fight’ Trashed 45-47
Image
Given the circumstances surrounding Donald Trump’s lawsuit against 60 Minutes and how the news division is apparently under pressure to temper its criticism of the current administration, it seems hard to believe that just a few years ago, a CBS-owned show all but declared war on the president.

In all six seasons of The Good Fight, creators Robert and Michelle King never passed up a chance to weave one of Trump’s many scandals into the narrative, from the infamous pee tape episode to accusations that he raped an underage girl.

The result was unmerciful but gloriously funny, especially when Christine Baranski’s liberal Diane Lockhart hallucinated news reports about Trump keeping a potbellied pig in the White House map room..

Shari Redstone’s Viacom didn...

We'd like to thank The Studio for this week's entertainment.

The newest episode of the acclaimed Apple TV+ comedy (which was just renewed for Season 2) takes viewers behind the scenes of Hollywood's biggest drunkest night. In "The Golden Globes," Matt (Seth Rogen) and Sal (Ike Barinholtz) attend the titular soirée, where the former quickly becomes obsessed with hearing his name called from the stage of the famed Beverly Hilton, not because he's a producer on a project, but because he greenlit a nominated film directed by Zoë Kravitz. The 30-minute episode is a delight for those amongst us who live and breathe all things awards. But it's most memorable for its incredible guest cast featuring some of...

‘Poker Face’ Season 2 — instant Emmy predictions for the acclaimed Peacock comedy
Image
More than two years after its Season 1 finale, Poker Face is back with its highly anticipated second season, now streaming on Peacock. The season kicked off with three episodes premiering on May 8, followed by new installments released each Thursday through July 10. Since the Emmy cutoff date is May 31, half of the season's 12 episodes will be eligible for consideration at the 2025 Emmys.

In Season 2, Natasha Lyonne's Charlie Cale — a charismatic drifter with the uncanny ability to detect lies — resumes her journey across the country, evading mobsters in her trusty Plymouth Barracuda while solving mysteries at every stop along the way. This season holds an impressive 100 percent "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 32 reviews.

"I wanted to do what we did in Season 1, just more of it," said creator Rian Johnson at the PaleyFest premiere in March. "The idea was not to see where Charlie goes with some bigger arc — the idea was,...

Rian Johnson Says Balancing ‘Poker Face’ Season 2 Production With ‘Knives Out 3’ Was More Stressful Than Last Time
Image
It’s no doubt that “Knives Out” director Rian Johnson has a jam-packed schedule — but production on his latest projects, “Knives Out 3” and “Poker Face” Season 2, coincided exactly, creating a conflict that he said was “more stressful” than last time around.

“This time was more stressful because … the two production periods lined up with each other, whereas with the last one, I was in post-production on ‘Glass Onion’ when we were in the writers’ room for ‘Poker Face,’ so I could just go back and forth in our office between the edit and ‘Poker Face,'” Johnson told TheWrap.

However, “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” which is slated to debut later in 2025, was shooting in London while the sophomore season of “Poker Face” was filming in New York. While series creator, EP, writer and director Johnson said he was “just as involved” with Season 2 during the writers’ room and production,...

This country superstar revealed she auditioned for an iconic role in The White Lotus
Image
One of the most memorable characters in The White Lotus history could have looked a lot different had the role went to the country superstar who auditioned for the role. No, a country icon didn't go out for Jennifer Coolidge's role as Tanya. Kelsea Ballerini just revealed that she auditioned for Portia in season 2.

The role of Tanya's eccentrically dressed assistant ultimately went to Haley Lu Richardson, and we couldn't imagine anyone else inhabiting the role as perfectly as Richardson. But picturing the Grammy Award-nominated singer, who's dating Outer Banks star Chase Stokes, in the role is still interesting! She shared the admission of her audition with People, saying:

"I have no shame in my game! I auditioned for the second season of The White Lotus for the role [of] Jennifer Coolidge's assistant that Haley did. But yeah, I did audition for that. Fun fact."

Poker Face Season 2 TV Review: Natasha Lyonne and Rian Johnson reunite for more mystery-of-the-week shenanigans
Image
Plot: Poker Face is a mystery-of-the-week series following Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie, who has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road with her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but solve.

Review: While Rian Johnson revived the whodunit on the big screen with Knives Out and the Netflix sequel Glass Onion, his charmingly retro small-screen series Poker Face has truly proven its worth in the tried-and-true genre. Echoing classic shows like Columbo and The Rockford Files, Poker Face‘s first season centered on Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne), who solved mysteries while on the run from gangsters looking to kill her. The overarching narrative of the first season was engaging, but the standalone mysteries boasting famous guest stars turned Poker Face into must-watch programming. After a two-year wait, Poker Face is back with another ten mysteries,...

Natasha Lyonne clarifies that her AI directing debut ‘Uncanny Valley’ is ‘not really an AI film’
Image
The second season of Poker Face was celebrated Thursday at the Hollywood Legion Theater where Natasha Lyonne, the star, executive producer, writer, and director, took a time-out from the premiere party to talk to Gold Derby about her upcoming movie, which has received plenty of attention this week.

Lyonne announced just days earlier that she was embarking on her feature film directorial debut, called Uncanny Valley, that would employ generative AI. Although Lyonne said she and her team would use the technology "ethically and creatively," the news was met with ambivalence due to industry-wide fear of artificial intelligence not only replacing artists but incorporating their work without permission.

Seemingly wary after some reports got it wrong, Lyonne on Thursday was cautious to note that Uncanny Valley “is not really an AI film.” Very aware of the reputation and threat the term AI carries in Hollywood, she clarified “ultimately, what this...
