The Americans star Matthew Rhys excitedly discusses the possibility of reviving the hit spy drama. Along with Keri Russell, Rhys led The Americans for six seasons on FX. Set during the Cold War, the show focused on Elizabeth (Russell) and Philip Jennings (Rhys) as two Soviet Kgb intelligence officers and how they lived their lives undercover as American parents. Even though the story came to a definitive end in 2018, the actors and the creative team have occasionally been asked about possibly bringing back the Emmy-winning thriller.
In an interview on The Rich Eisen Show, while promoting Perry Mason season 2, Rhys is asked about returning to The Americans.
The actor starts off by mentioning that the group behind The Americans is planning to get together to celebrate the fact it's been a decade since the series first debuted. Rhys goes on to talk about the ending, explaining how it's "incredibly open-ended...

In a Lonely Place: How ‘Perry Mason’ Tweaks Its Cinematography for a New Season of Noirish Mysteries
In its first season, HBO’s “Perry Mason” received Emmy and ASC award nominations for David Franco’s exquisitely atmospheric cinematography, which avoided the desaturated look so common to period shows and evoked the 1930s by referencing early color still photography. One might have thought it would be difficult to improve upon the look established by Franco and alternating cinematographer Darran Tiernan, but the new season of “Perry Mason” that premiered March 6 is even more vivid and involving thanks to slight changes in color and a more subjective approach to the camerawork.
When the gritty origin story of Erle Stanley Gardner’s defense attorney premiered in 2020, cinematographer Eliot Rockett was one of its fans. Now, he joins the series — along with showrunners Jack Amiel and Michael Begler — for Season 2, lensing the premiere and alternating subsequent episodes with Tiernan and John Grillo. “I thought the first season was great, so there...

A nascent law firm just trying to make ends meet. A borderline alcoholic attorney struggling with the disappointing turn his life has taken. A city drowning in corruption. A murdered businessman, and two brothers (wrongfully?) accused of the crime. These are the elements that make up the second season of HBO’s Perry Mason, which is finally arriving on TV and streaming after a three-year-long wait. Starring Matthew Rhys as the titular private-eye-turned-defense-lawyer, and Juliet Rylance and Chris Chalk as his associates Della Street and Paul Drake, the neo-noir series based on the character first made famous by author Erle Stanley Gardner reaches its sophomore run as sharp as ever. But as fans are once again glued to their seats, dying to know what tricks Mason will pull out of his sleeve to solve the crime of the season, it is also important to remember how we got here in the first place.

HBO''s Perry Mason returns for its second season on March 6. The reboot of the classic legal detective show is set in 1930s Los Angeles, as were the original novels, and draws loose inspiration from some of the more lurid headlines of that time. Season one took on the story of Aimee Semple McPherson, the superstar radio preacher who was reported missing, and was later suspected of faking her own kidnapping. Not that many details have been released about the second season, but there's enough to confidently guess that this time, Perry Mason (played by Matthew Rhys) will get wrapped up in a fictionalized version of the Greystone Mansion murders. These deaths are the subject of ongoing fascination, as one the victims was a member of one of Los Angeles' wealthiest families, the Dohenys.

Perry Mason returns for season 2 nearly three years after it first debuted on HBO. After creators and showrunners Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald stepped down, Jack Amiel and Michael Begler stepped in to work alongside executive producers Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey. Perry Mason stars Matthew Rhys as the title character initially created by Erle Stanley Gardner. Joining him are Juliet Rylance as Della Street and Chris Chalk as Paul Drake.
The trio, which came together at the end of season 1, will find themselves in a bit of a rut when season 2 begins, but Perry, Della, and Paul will quickly be swept up in another murder trial that will shake Los Angeles to its core. Perry Mason season 2 features several additions to its cast, including Hope Davis, Katherin Waterston, Paul Raci, Sean Astin, and Mark O'Brien. Justin Kirk, Eric Lange, and Diarra Kilpatrick reprise their roles from season 1.

Three years ago, I championed HBO’s bold decision to reinvent Erle Stanley Gardner’s iconic hero Perry Mason as a downtrodden, chronically rumpled gumshoe turned lawyer in Depression-era L.A. As played with forlorn pugnacity by Matthew Rhys, as if channeling the cinematic spirits of Bogart and Mitchum, the new/old Perry Mason felt like he fit into the film noir world of legends like Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe. Perry’s first-season redemption arc made for compelling TV, but heavy-handed storytelling lets him down in Perry Mason’s long-awaited but disappointing comeback. Lured back to criminal law to defend Latino brothers from a Hooverville slum being railroaded for the murder of an oil-family scion, Perry enlists his lesbian partner Della Street (Juliet Rylance) and Black investigator Paul Drake (Chris Chalk) ...

When “Perry Mason” debuted on HBO back in 2020, it was meant to be a limited series. But the show was critically acclaimed and extremely popular so now, nearly three years later, it is returning to HBO (and HBO Max) with a juicy new case, lots of morally ambiguous complications and a pair of new showrunners in “The Knick” creators Jack Amiel and Michael Begler.
And Matthew Rhys, who plays Perry Mason in the show, couldn’t be more thrilled, as he told TheWrap, video of which you can watch above.

"Perry Mason" is coming back after three long years. A lot has happened in those years, and if the trailer is any indication, a lot has changed for the core characters in the aftermath of the events from season 1. Matthew Rhys plays the titular character of the show, but the series is more of an ensemble affair with Juliet Rylance and Chris Chalk's characters, Della Street and Paul Drake, filling out the triumvirate of leads.
I had the chance to talk with Rylance and Chalk in advance of the season 2 premiere, where they discussed where their characters are now compared to when we last saw them. Nearly three years have passed since the gritty reboot of the TV courtroom classic “Perry Mason” debuted on HBO, switching out the case-of-the-week format for one overarching trial. Perry Mason’s (Matthew Rhys) journey from disheveled private investigator to rugged qualified lawyer fuels the first half of the first season, but the act of introducing so many characters hamper the pacing. It is firing on all cylinders by the end of the first season and more than justified its existence.

Created in the 1930s by Erle Stanley Gardner, Perry Mason has traversed the world of books, film, radio, and TV, only to arrive in the peak TV era in 2020. That adaptation, created by Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald, kept the character rooted in the past while also giving him a gritty new outlook. It's likely that if modern audiences remember "Perry Mason" at all, they remember him as the star of stagey courtroom TV dramas; a lawyer who always manages to get the truth out of those he's cross-examining on the stand. But the new Perry Mason, as played by Matthew Rhys, began his first season as a gumshoe; a rumpled private eye caught up in the seedy underbelly of early 1930s Los Angeles. It was only at the end of the show's first season that Mason became a lawyer, rather quickly (he passed the bar after an all-night cram-study...
