The Lemonheads have announced their first album of original material in nearly 20 years, with Evan Dando and Co. sharing first single “Deep End” from their upcoming LP, Love Chant.
The Nineties alt-rockers paired the track with a video directed by Carlão Busato and Luigi Parisi and filmed in Sao Paulo, where Dando recorded Love Chant with a roster that includes longtime collaborators Tom Morgan and Juliana Hatfield, as well as Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis, who contributes a signature guitar solo to “Deep End.”

The Lemonheads have offered two new songs as a preview for their comeback album Love Chant: “Deep End,” which features guest guitar work from Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis and backing vocals from Juliana Hatfield, and “Sad Cinderella,” a cover of Townes Van Zandt’s 1972 original.
“Deep End,” an original offering from The Lemonheads, reprises the band’s scrappy, guitar-forward rock sound. Frontman Evan Dando mutters the verses in his signature slacker baritone as the song’s central guitar riff rises and falls down the fretboard. J Mascis then arrives for a ripping solo in between the verses and during the bridge, with Julianna Hatfield also providing light harmonies over Dando. “Deep End” arrives with a black-and-white, movement-driven video filmed on location in São Paulo, Brazil. Watch the video below.

The last time Jesse Malin performed in New York, in March 2023, he jumped off the stage at Webster Hall, waded through the crowd, and ended up singing atop the bar at the rear of the venue in a punk-rock display of sweaty artist-fan communion. Malin’s sold-out performance Sunday night at the Beacon Theatre — his first public concert since suffering a paralyzing spinal stroke last year — looked a little different than past gigs but bristled with that same punk spirit and sense of community.

Jesse Malin told Rolling Stone that he was determined to dance again after suffering a rare spinal stroke in May 2023. In a new music video for “She Don’t Love Me Now,” Sheer Terror frontman Paul Bearer is his fleet-footed proxy, gliding across a dancefloor in a New York club as Malin continues to rehab the use of his legs.

Jesse Malin has released the new single “Argentina,” written while the singer-songwriter was rehabbing from his spinal stroke in Buenos Aires. Additionally, actor-comedian Fred Armisen, filmmaker/musician Jim Jarmusch, Gogol Bordello frontman Eugene Hutz, and more have been added to one of Malin’s upcoming benefit concerts at the Beacon Theatre in New York City.
Malin, a staple of the NYC punk scene over the past three decades as a solo artist and as frontman of D Generation, was paralyzed from the waist down when he suffered the spinal stroke at a restaurant in May of 2023.
He has since started walking with the aid of a walker, but still has a long way to go in his recovery. He returned to perform last month on CBS Saturday Morning, where he gave “Argentina” its live debut. Now, he has released the official studio version.

“Air Drumming Fix You” is Wild Pink’s first offering since 2022’s Ilysm, and their first since recently signing to Fire Talk Records. Dave Matthews — yes, the one with the band — joined Dinosaur Jr. onstage during their show in Seattle Wednesday night (January 12th), where they all did a cover of Neil Young’s “Cortez the Killer” together.
Dino Jr. like to bring their friends onstage. While they were in London last November, they brought out My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields to shred on a cover The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven.” In just the past week alone, they’ve recruited Pavement’s Stephen Malkmus, Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock, Red Fang’s Bryan Giles, and The Dandy Warhols’ Peter Holmström at various shows.
And Matthews wasn’t the only guest Wednesday, either: Mudhoney’s Mark Arm also assisted J Mascis and company for covers of The Stooges’ “T.V. Eye” and “Real Cool Time,” while Pearl Jam/Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron sat in during “Yeah We Know.” See some fan-captured clips...

In a perfect coalescence of late-’80s indie rock delight, Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine joined Dinosaur Jr. onstage in London Tuesday night (November 14th) to perform a rendition of The Cure‘s “Just Like Heaven.”
Mbv and Dino Jr. toured together back in the day, and it looks like they still regularly keep in touch. The latter band brought Shields onstage at a Dinosaur 30th anniversary show in New York in 2015; Shields stopped by Dinosaur Jr.’s Camp Fuzz rock camp in 2019; and J Mascis appeared in a promo clip for Shields’ new Fender pedal last September. And although Dinosaur Jr. have a studio version of their “Just Like Heaven” cover, our records indicate this is the first time Shields has performed it with them live. As you might expect, it was very loud and kicked ass.

Having already proven their bona fides with both 1986’s Evol and 1987’s Sister, Sonic Youth delivered their most cohesive, accessible album to date with their 1988 opus Daydream Nation. Originally inspired by the ferocity of hardcore punk, the cerebral art rock of acts like the Velvet Underground and Public Image Ltd., and the avant-garde compositions of Glenn Branca, the album saw the four New York bohos sweeten their no-wave edge with anthemic songwriting.
Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo’s detuned guitars strum plaintively and hypnotically as Daydream Nation slowly shakes itself awake on “Teen Age Riot.” Bassist-singer Kim Gordon channels the Stooges’s eerie chants on 1969’s “We Will Fall” and even cribs from its lyrics: “Spirit, desire/We will fall,” she mumbles before the song’s dual-guitar riff tears the track apart.

Here’s one for the ’90s indie rock lovers: The Breeders have shared “Divine Mascis,” a long-lost version of their Last Splash cut “Divine Hammer” that features Dinosaur Jr. axeman J Mascis on lead vocals. Check it out below.
You’d think Mascis would be playing guitar on the song, since he’s one of the most inventive and beloved players of the original indie rock scene. That’s what The Breeders expected, too, when they sent “Divine Hammer” to the artist way back in the day.
“At the time, J Mascis was a guitar god… we sent him the tape to put guitar on, so when it came back and he’s got rid of our voices and just put his vocal on, we were like, ‘Wha?!’” Kelley Deal told Uncut. “But it’s really cute. There’s a freshness to it, and it’s just so weird. I...

The Breeders have spent the past three decades crashing on the last splash. The ’90s alt-rock legends are celebrating the occasion with Last Splash (30th Anniversary Original Analog Edition), plus 2023 tour dates where they’ll play the 1993 record in its entirety. Man on Man, the duo comprised of Faith No More’s Roddy Bottum and his partner Joey Holman, have announced their sophomore album, Provincetown, due out July 16th via Polyvinyl Records. They also dropped the video for lead single “Showgirls.”
Much of Provincetown was written in the Massachusetts town that gives its namesake and where Bottum and Holman shared their first home together. For example, the noisy pop-punker “Showgirls” was inspired by a Provincetown variety show and sees Bottum and Holman trading off on vocals and guitar licks.
“As we lean into what Man on Man is and will be, two things immediately come up. Energy and community,” said Bottum in the press release. “’Showgirls’ is all that.”

J. Mascis: Dinosaur Jr. frontman, guitar god, and now, puzzle master. The rocker announced Wednesday that he has co-founded a subscription puzzle service that jigsaws some of music’s most iconic album covers.
Dubbed Puzzle-Heads, the subscription service will begin later this year with a 1,000-piece puzzle dedicated to David Bowie’s famed The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars cover.

Sasami has shared an alternate version of her track “Tried to Understand,” featuring some bonus shredding from Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis.
This grungier take on “Tried to Understand” is vastly different from the one that appears on Sasami’s most recent album, Squeeze. The original, with its breezy acoustic guitar strum and country twang is — to borrow Sasami’s description to Rolling Stone earlier this year — “truly a fucking Sheryl Crow pop song.” But this new take is a fully electric blowout, with Mascis’ characteristically ferocious guitar work spiraling around Sasami’s cool vocals.

The statistics of Bandcamp Friday speak for themselves: In the year-plus since the launch of the campaign, during which the platform has waived its revenue share for music purchased on the first Friday of each month, fans have paid artists more than $50 million dollars. “Bandcamp is like my life source,” metal auteur Trevor William Church told Rolling Stone in 2019, no doubt speaking for many creators in the age of meager streaming royalties. Bandcamp Friday continues on May 7th — read on for a slew of recommendations from Rs staffers on what...

Ahead of the release of Dinosaur Jr.’s latest LP Sweep It Into Space this Friday, the indie rock legends have released the video for the album’s “Take It Back.”
The colorful visual features Claymation and stop-motion animation directed by Callum Scott-Dyson, who said in a statement that the video was inspired by the painted creature featured on Sweep It Into Space’s album cover.
That artwork served as a “springboard for its own little adventure, exploring some simple notions of creation, dependence, coming of age, and searching for another like yourself.

Today, 4,000 people were supposed to descend on Willie Nelson’s Texas ranch for the Luck Reunion, one of the most intimate and thrilling music festivals of the year. That plan had be put on hold due to the coronavirus, but instead performers — including Nelson, Lucinda Williams, Jewel, Paul Simon and Edie Brickell, Margo Price, and others — will be performing via livestream.
Micah Nelson, who performs as Particle Kid, will also perform. Micah has put out a series of loose, wild psychedelic albums in the past few years that includes the excellent just-released ‘Live!

Former Sonic Youth singer Kim Gordon rolled out the details of her debut solo LP No Home Record this morning. The album was recored at the Sphere Ranch in Los Angeles and primarily produced by Justin Raisen. “‘Why a solo record? And why now?,’” Gordon asked in a statement. “I don’t know, but it wouldn’t have happened without the persistence of Justin Raisen. Living in La the last few years it feels like home, but the transience of the place makes it feel sometimes like no home.”

Welcome to the West, long after the frontier has closed. Allison Anders’ marvelous drama of a three-girl family is a big step for indie cinema, a highly entertaining examination of women’s aspirations and frustrations out on the non-glamorous working class fringe. Writer-director Anders wastes no time with a terrific cast — Brooke Adams, Ione Skye and Fairuza Balk’s family lacks a father, and ‘men who walk’ becomes the central issue in their lives. Filmed in a gloriously believable New Mexico desert.

Kurt Vile is this indie-rock generation’s preeminent guitar mystic — heir to the vaunted legacy of the Meat Puppets, John Fahey and J. Mascis, spooling out his sly epiphanies with the languid equanimity of a high-as-balls buddy for life. Vile also has a knack for undercutting his chillness with a Neil Young-circa-1974 sad side that keeps his jams down to earth and gives his albums a mordant relatability in these less-than-hopeful times. Vile’s latest LP has his tastiest playing and his deepest writing. It follows his fantastic 2017 collaboration with singer-songwriter wiz Courtney Barnett,...

Dinosaur Jr. frontman J. Mascis doesn’t have any tattoos and he’s definitely never given one. One of those things changed at this year’s Riot Fest as Mascis sat down with Ink Master’s Oliver Peck, who periodically lets his favorite bands tattoo his body. Long before he was making people laugh for a living, Fred Armisen played drums with the Blue Man Group, and also manned the kit for Trenchmouth, a Chicago punk band that released five albums in the Nineties. Armisen's love for music shines through in the new season of Documentary Now!, where he and fellow Saturday Night Live alum Bill Hader parody a series of famous docs – including the classic Talking Heads concert film, Stop Making Sense. Right now, Armisen is shooting the seventh season of his other TV show, Portlandia,...

Two months ago a concert of David Bowie's music was announced - Famous fans would sing Bowie's songs at Carnegie Hall in New York City in March. Club owner Michael Dorf had intended the show - the tickets for which would raise money for arts education - as a tribute to a living legend. But the day of the announcement, Bowie died at age 69 and the concert was quickly recast as a celebration of a musical life cut short. The timing, said Dorf, of City Winery, led to an outpouring of "fellow artists wanting to show their respect and...

In case you haven't heard, seminal riot grrl group Sleater-Kinney have returned with their first album in a decade with No Cities To Love. You might know guitarist/vocalist Carrie Brownstein from her current gig yukking it up with Fred Armisen in "Portlandia," but before she was on the hit IFC comedy, she was ripping riffs and shouting it out hard in the seminal band, and the trio has called in a few favors to help get the word out. Andy Samberg, Sarah Silverman, Gerard Way, Connie Britton, Miranda July, J Mascis, Vanessa Bayer, Norman Reedus, Ellen Page, Natasha Lyonne and Armisen all feature in the album's title track video. And there's a clever twist with everyone involved singing along to the song on headphones, so you only hear their vocal renditions of the track until the actual tune gets pumped up toward the end. Check it out below. [Pitchfork]...

The Flaming Lips brought their psychedelic spectacle to Conan on Thursday night, teaming with Miley Cyrus for a mind-altering cover of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band epic "A Day in the Life." Check out the trippy results above.
During the song's first half, Cyrus is obscured as she scurries around under Coyne's massive silver cape. She emerges, wearing a silver wig, to sing lead during an electro-pop rendering of Paul McCartney's poppy middle section, sometimes resting her head on Coyne's chest.

The Flaming Lips and some "fwends" have taken on the songs of The Beatles' "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band," and first up is an iconic little song with Miley Cyrus and Moby. Click here to listen to Miley Cyrus, Moby and Flaming Lips cover "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." Cyrus obviously bends her voice to fit the psychedelic trip on this one; but a trained singer singing purposely flat hurts my widdle hawt. It's nice to hear her step outside her wheelhouse, and, judging from the little blips of in-studio banter inserted at the beginning and end, she had at least a little fun. As you'll see the song is conveniently located on the pre-order page for the set, officially dubbed "With a Little Help From My Fwends," a title you will be embarrassed to say aloud, guaranteed. The Oklahoma-founded group has gone the way of PledgeMusic for this release,...

Most people on this side of the pond might recognize veteran English comedian Richard Ayoade as the oddball techie Moss on the Britcom The It Crowd, or as the odd man out from the 2012 A-list sci-fi comedy The Watch (he was the gentleman who was not Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn or Jonah Hill). He's established himself as a novel comic presence onscreen, gravitating toward characters that feel several beats off from the norm and don't mesh with their environments.

Currently in theaters portraying royalty in "Diana," the upcoming indie "Sunlight Jr." is a reminder of the range Naomi Watts can deliver. Here in a completely different role, she sheds designer fashion and opulence for discount chain clothes and a grittier tale about two people just trying to make it to the next day. Co-starring Matt Dillon and written and directed by Laurie Collyer ("Sherrybaby"), the story follows Melissa and Ray, a devoted but permanently down-on-their-luck couple struggling to make ends meet and pay the bill for the motel room they live in. And even the good news of Melissa's pregnancy brings with it the knowledge that they may not have the resources to care for a child. It's tough material, but there are moments of hope too, and in this exclusive clip we share one of the lighter times between Melissa and Ray. Featuring a score from Dinosaur Jr. frontman J. Mascis,...

You know the feeling. You're hanging out with J Mascis on your talk show, when all of a sudden Stephen Colbert bursts onto the stage and dances all up on you with "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk.

It's official: After 11 years, Fred Armisen is done with "Saturday Night Live."
In an interview with Splitsider, not only did the "Portlandia" star confirm his exit, but he said he felt he went out with a bang.
"I think it's clear," Armisen said. "I didn't do any kind of official announcement, but I really felt like it was obvious. An ending that was a love letter to all the music I grew up with, and also to my friends and to SNL and to Lorne and to the cast. There was a lot of emotion attached to it, but it was a very positive emotion."
The ending Armisen is referring to is a sketch he performed in May in which he played Ian Rubbish, a member of an English punk rock band. He was joined onstage by his "Portlandia" co-star Carrie Brownstein, plus several music legends including Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones,...

This weekend’s season finale of Saturday Night Live was an especially emotional episode, one that saw beloved cast members Bill Hader and Fred Armisen bid the show a fond adieu. Hader’s big farewell sketch was, of course, the epic wedding between Stefon and Seth Meyers, while Fred Armisen was joined by a calvacade of indie rock legends—Carrie Brownstein! Steve Jones! Aimee Mann! Michael Penn! J. Mascis!—for an emotional performance as his punk rocker alter ego Ian Rubbish.
Both Hader and Armisen were incredibly versatile performers whose contributions to the show will be greatly missed but, in particular, Armisen’s ability to consistently inject an element of musical theatricality into the show will be near impossible to replace. Before he became a SNL cast member back in 2002, Armisen was the drummer for an indie rock act called Trenchmouth, and he always managed to keep his foot in...

Fred Armisen has not announced whether this week's "Saturday Night Live" season finale will indeed be his last episode as rumored, but a sketch during that show was all but a clear farewell from the longtime cast member.
Appearing as Ian Rubbish, his English punk rock character introduced earlier this season, Armisen sang a song with the repeated chorus "It's been all right / It's been a lovely night with you" while on the British music show "Top of the Pops."
During the performance, Armisen was joined by several musical legends, reflecting his own background as a musician: His "Portlandia" collaborator and Wild Flag and Sleater-Kinney leader Carrie Brownstein, Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., and musical powerhouse couple Aimee Mann and Michael Penn.

Last year, Kristen Wiig’s emotional SNL sendoff set a high water mark for cast member farewells. (Compare it to, say, the way Chris Kattan said goodbye with a “terrible re-enactment” of his SNL career during his last show 10 years ago.)
I’d say that mark was met — and possibly exceeded — by the closing sketch of tonight’s show, in which Fred Armisen (as punk rocker Ian Rubbish, first introduced when Vince Vaughn hosted a few weeks ago) sang a sweet original tune filled with simple, evocative lyrics like, “It’s been all right, I’ve had a lovely night.
