10 Best Christian Christmas Movies To Watch This Holiday Season (& Where To Stream Them)
Image
The best Christian Christmas movies remind viewers just why celebrating the holiday is so important - and not just because of the Biblical event that led to the holiday in the first place. While there’s no shortage of Christmas movies out there, those that devote themselves to keeping themes like love, family, gratitude, and togetherness at their core feel few and far between by the 2020s.

This is what makes Christian Christmas movies so important. What’s more, the best Christian films to watch at Christmas aren’t limited to retellings of the birth of Jesus, either. There are many movies with all sorts of settings and characters that have an important faith-based message about the holiday, and viewers seeking a solid seasonal holiday film with Christian themes have no shortage of variety to choose from.

The True Story Behind 300: Rise of an Empire, Explained
Image
Quick Links What Is 300: Rise of an Empire About? The Truth of the Battles Was It All for Nothing? 300: Rise of an Empire explores more history, focusing on Greek-Persian naval battles The film blends real characters and battles with fictionalized elements to create an epic Naval forces, depicted as mighty triremes, played a significant role in the conflicts depicted

When 300 was released in 2006, it was a crazy, bloody, muscled joyride that was endlessly quotable ("This is Sparta!") and had that Zack Snyder signature style that we've come to recognize. It took seven years for a sequel, and by that time, Snyder was out, and a new director was in, but that didn't mean it was going to be any less bold.

300: Rise of an Empire attempted to keep up the pace of the original while tackling quite a bit more history than its predecessor. 300 had less to deal with,...

Zack Snyders Failed 300 Sequel Is Finding New Life on Netflix

Quick Links 300: Rise of an Empire Is a Fictional Take on History 300: Rise of an Empire Rounds Out the Story of 300 300: Rise of an Empire Is Much Bloodier Than 300 Eva Green Offers a Great Performance in 300: Rise of an Empire 300: Rise of an Empire continues the epic battles of the Persian Wars in true Zack Snyder fashion. The sequel rounds out the story of 300 by introducing new characters and bridging the gap with its predecessor. Eva Green's performance as Artemisia shines in the bloodier and more stylized sequel, which is worth watching on Netflix.

Zack Snyder is well known for a very particular style of filmmaking, and 300 is a perfect example of the kind of movies the director makes all too well. Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley, the 2007 film was...

300 TV Series Now in the Works, Will Zack Snyder Return?
Image
A 300 TV series now in the works, with Zack Snyder possibly returning to helm the project. Plot details unknown, but is expected to be a prequel. Snyder also working on R-rated cuts of Rebel Moon saga for Netflix, with title changes for the upcoming movies.

A TV series set in the world of Zack Snyders 300 is now in the works, with the project looking to bring the divisive filmmaker back for more swords-and-sandals action in what will reportedly be a prequel to the 2006 outing. According to Variety, deals are still being negotiated, with Warner Bros. TV looking to bring Snyder back to helm the project alongside his long-time producing partner (and wife) Deborah Snyder, who executive produced 300. The small screen endeavor will fall under the Snyders Stone Quarry production banner, with the studio also looking to bring back several other names from the 300 production team, including Gianni Nunnari,...

300: Rise Of An Empire Cast & Returning Character Guide
Image
300: Rise of An Empire features returning characters and introduces new ones, continuing the battles between Athens, Sparta, and Persia. The sequel explores the aftermath of King Leonidas' death, with Themistokles taking on the role of the lead warrior against Xerxes and Artemisia. The highly stylized 300 movies, criticized for historical inaccuracy, provide an action-packed and dramatic experience for viewers.

300: Rise of An Empire sees a number of characters and cast members carry over from the first film. Loosely based on historical truths, both 300 and its sequel 300: Rise of an Empire tell the story of the battles between Athens, Sparta, and Persia. Though known for their highly stylized elements, the ultra-quotable 300 movies are widely criticized for their lack of historical accuracy despite finding its drama in being a sweeping period piece.

300, which was released in 2006, focuses on action movie star Gerard Butlers King Leonidas and his quest to...

A 300 TV series kicks off early development with Zack and Deborah Snyder eyed to reunite for what could be a prequel to the original
Image
In 2006, you could scarcely go a day without someone shouting, “This is Sparta!” in your face. The iconic line by Gerard Butler’s King Leonidas in Zack Snyder’s 300 became a battle cry for anyone looking to punt an irritant off a cliff. Out of sight. Out of mind. According to sources, a 300 TV series is developing at Warner Bros. TV. It’s early days for what Deadline says could be a prequel to the 2006 film, and fans are already theorizing about the plot, which is unknown. While deals are not in place, we hear Zack and Deborah Snyder could reunite with Gianni Nunnari, Mark Canton, Bernie Goldmann, and Wesley Coller of Stone Quarry for the newly announced project.

Zack Snyder directed and co-wrote 300 with Kurt Johnstad and Michael B. Gordon. That’s Gordon, not Jordan. Based on the 1998 comic book series by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley,...

’300: Rise of an Empire’ Blu-ray Review
Stars: Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Rodrigo Santoro, Lena Headey, Hans Matheson, Callan Mulvey, David Wenham, Jack O’Connell | Written by Zack Snyder, Kurt Johnstad | Directed by Noam Murro

I don’t want to spoil 300, but I think it’s fair to say it had a double-edged ending with the feeling being that there was still hope even if the war was far from over. 300: Rise of an Empire continues the story, but also prequels it and runs alongside it as the focus turns to Greece and the coming together of a nation to take on Xerxes and his Persian forces.

300: Rise of an Empire focuses mainly on Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton) taking the battle to the Persian Army on the naval battlefield. Battling against Artemisia (Eva Green) Xerxes’ (Rodrigo Santoro) trusted naval leader he must outwit her and the huge forces she has to take on his more meagre offering.

New on DVD/Blu-ray: '300: Rise of an Empire' Bashes Heads in, While 'Enemy' Blows Minds Out
300: Rise of an Empire - Warner Bros. - Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD Director: Noam Murro Cast: Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Lena Headey, Hans Matheson, Rodrigo Santoro. Full cast + crew 300: Rise of an Empire has got brawny men generating tidal waves of CGI blood, but it's weirdly lacking the heart and underdog camaraderie that made the first movie such a hit. The plot this time is a bit convoluted since it's a prequel, a side-quel, and a sequel all at the same time (just accept that people are fighting for various reasons), but it benefits from having the always enjoyable presence of Eva Green as the antagonist. There's not really anything new or inventive here, and the whole style of the movie seems particularly stale if you...

’300: Rise of an Empire’ Review
Stars: Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Lena Headey, Hans Matheson, Callan Mulvey, Rodrigo Santoro, David Wenham, Jack O’Connell, Andrew Tiernan, Igal Naor, Andrew Pleavin | Written by Zack Snyder, Kurt Johnstad | Directed by Noam Murro

Breaking new ground is certainly something to be admired. Being able to push the boundaries further is a rare feat that is inspiring to witness. The issue becomes what happens when that new ground becomes tired and worn? The inability to answer that quandary is a big reason squeals to visual spectacles rarely succeed. Their once flashy and new trend oversaturates the market to the point of ad nauseam.

With that issue in mind it is no wonder 300: Rise of an Empire does not work nearly as well as its predecessor. Director Noam Murro’s style is reminiscent to the original to a fault. It is akin to waiting eight years to make a sequel to The Matrix.

'300: Rise of an Empire' Sequel a Possibility Teases Sullivan Stapleton
Sullivan Stapleton
Following its big box office win over the weekend, its possible that we could be seeing a sequel to 300: Rise of an Empire, which has already earned over $140 million worldwide in just a few short days. Although a follow-up has not been confirmed yet, star Sullivan Stapleton, who plays General Themistokles in the big-screen adventure, revealed that he hopes Warner Bros. brings him back, since there is much more story to be told.

"As for the sequel, it's a huge story, and those battles between the Greeks and Persians went on for years and years. I hope to God we do another sequel. If we don't, hopefully they put me in another film."

While it took almost exactly seven years to get this follow-up to 2007's 300 off the ground, the box office numbers prove that there is still an audience waiting for stylized action like this. 300 director Zack Snyder...

Now playing in theaters is director Noam Murro’s 300: Rise of an Empire. Film Review: ‘300: Rise of an Empire’ Gets Its 3D War On
Chicago – The rewriting of history in comic book movie form – not that’s anything wrong with that – continues with “300: Rise of an Empire.” Ancient wars are brought to life through a combination of mythology, six-pack abs, 3D blood spurts and comprehensive special effects, which can be better than history.

Rating: 3.0/5.0

Nothing is unexpected in “300: Rise of an Empire” that wasn’t expressed in the previous “300” film. The sequel is a series of war proclamations and battle, only to regroup for more speeches and then more conflict. Most of it happens on the sea, which allows for some exaggerated computer generated ships and their minions – at one point a horse rides among the rolling vessels. But all the blood, bodies and baring breasts are intact, richly presented in action packed 3D. For fans of the previous film, there is everything expected in the sequel, with no subtlety or explanations necessary.

Wonder how many viewers would be interested in another version of the oft repeated history of ancient Greece? It's the story of how the Persian King Xerxes, with over 1,000 ships in his fleet, could have easily conquered the divided Greeks in Circa 480 BC.

Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel "Xerxes", the film takes off on a very verbose expository note by the Spartan Queen Gorgo. Her explanations weave in the loose ends as well as the backstory of the characters, giving an insight into the history.

Director Noam Murro Talks 300: Rise Of An Empire, How he Landed the Job, the Use of 3D, the Intense Sex Scene, the MPAA, and More
Opening this weekend is director Noam Murro’s 300: Rise of an Empire. In the sequel to Zack Snyder’s 300, Greek general Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton) attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god, Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), and Artemisia (Eva Green), the vengeful commander of the Persian navy. The film also stars Lena Headey, Hans Matheson, David Wenham, Igal Nao, Callan Mulvey, Jack O’Connell, and Andrew Tiernan. I’ve seen the film twice now and am happy to report the sequel kicks ass. The fight scenes are extremely well done, the 3D actually adds to the story, and Eva Green’s performance is worth the price of admission. It also might have the best sex scene of 2014, and it’s only February. While many might have wondered if we needed a...

Michelle Pfeiffer and Eva Green at an event for Dark Shadows (2012)
300 Rise of an Empire review: Eva Green shines in uninspired sequel
Michelle Pfeiffer and Eva Green at an event for Dark Shadows (2012)

The iconic line "this is Sparta" gets a sole outing in belated sequel 300: Rise of an Empire, but it's muted and uttered almost under the breath of Lena Headey's Queen Gorgo. What's strange is that this is a rare moment of restraint in a film that goes Ott, striving so hard to outdo its predecessor yet ultimately coming up short. More violence! More action! More nudity! None of this can compensate for the dearth of emotional engagement on show in Kurt Johnstad and Zack Snyder's script.

To some the first 300 is visceral graphic novel entertainment writ large on the big screen, to others it's a visually dazzling empty vessel (this reviewer leans to the latter). How you feel about Rise of an Empire will...

Atlanta Readers: Win Passes to See 300: Rise Of An Empire
Zack Snyder's 300 is goofy fun, and while he didn't direct the new sequel, 300: Rise of an Empire, the visual aesthetic, straight-faced melodrama, and ridiculous action appear to have remained in place. I'm not expecting a radical leap forward from the first movie; I'm expecting a delightfully silly picture where spear-wielding guys in loincloths try to kill other spear-wielding guys in loincloths. There's no need to over-complicate things here. I'm pleased to announce we're giving away 20 pairs of passes to the Atlanta screening of 300: Rise of an Empire. Hit the jump to find out how you can see the movie early and for free. The film stars Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Rodrigo Santoro, Lena Headey, Jack O’Connell, Hans Matheson, David Wenham, Igal Nao, and Andrew Tiernan. 300: Rise of an Empire opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on March 7th.
