A Georgia appeals court has disqualified Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from heading the state’s Rico prosecution against Donald Trump and several of his allies over their alleged attempts to interfere with Georgia’ 2020 election results.

The decision is another blow to Georgia’s efforts to try the president-elect for his role in the attempted manipulation of the vote. The prosecution was already in peril given the Supreme Court’s presidential immunity ruling earlier this year, and controversy over an alleged improper relationship between Willis and former Special Prosecutor Nathan Wade.

It wasn’t that long ago that it seemed like Donald Trump would finally face consequences for his actions conducted both in and out of office. He paid a $92 million bond while appealing a guilty verdict in a defamation case in April, then the following month posted a $175 million bond while appealing a civil fraud lawsuit. The month after that, in May, he endured his first criminal trial, which ended with the former president being found guilty of 34 felony counts.

Things have since seemed to turn around for the Republican nominee.

Another one of Donald Trump’s criminal trials looks as if it won’t happen until after the election, if at all, as a Georgia appeals court put a pause on a racketeering case brought by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.

In a one-page ruling, the appeals court stayed the proceedings against Trump and eight other defendants. The judges are considering an appeal of a lower court ruling that retained Willis as the lead prosecutor despite a romantic relationship with a special prosector, Nathan Wade.

Oral arguments on whether Willis should have been removed from the case have been tentatively scheduled before the appellate court on Oct. 4, per the AP. In March, Wade abruptly resigned from his role as the special prosecutor in the high-profile Georgia election interference case and admitted to a romantic affair with Willis while he was working there. The presiding judge, Scott McAfee, stated that due to the affair, either Willis or Wade would need to recuse themselves from the case.

Lawyers who represented Donald Trump and the 14 others accused in the alleged scheme to illegally overturn Trump’s loss in the 2020 Georgia presidential election quickly seized upon the revelation. They requested McAfee dismiss the case and argued that Willis and Wade had benefited financially from their relationship through lavish vacations and that Wade had been paid more than other prosecutors who worked on the same case.
