Robert Eggers' Nosferatu proved to be a huge success for Focus Features, and we found out earlier this year that the acclaimed filmmaker is staying with the studio - and firmly in the horror genre - for his next project, Werwulf, which he also co-wrote with fellow The Northman scribe, Sjón.
Just in case the title didn't give it away, this will be a werewolf movie. Plot details are few and far between, but we know that the story will be set in 13th century England. The script is also said to "feature dialogue that was true to the time period and has translations and annotations for those uninitiated to Old English."
Nexus Point News (since confirmed by Variety) is reporting that the movie has found its leads, with Nosferatu stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp set to re-team with Eggers. Taylor-Johnson is expected to play the titular werewolf, with...

It’s a “Nosferatu” reunion! Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who starred in director Robert Eggers’ stylish vampire hit, is set to re-team with the filmmaker for his next film, “Werwulf.” Lily-Rose Depp, who led the 2024 gothic horror film, is also in talks to join the project.
Eggers will direct the werewolf horror feature from a script he co-wrote with Sjón. The film is slated for a Christmas Day 2026 release in North America.
Eggers and Sjón, who also co-wrote 2022’s “The Northman” together, are producing “Werwulf” alongside Focus Features, while Maiden Voyage’s Chris and Eleanor Columbus are serving as executive producers.
Focus Features most recently financed and released Eggers’ critically-acclaimed gothic horror film “Nosferatu.” Eggers and Focus have partnered on all his films to date, also including “The Northman,” “The Witch” and “The Lighthouse, for which Focus handled international distribution through Universal International.

F.W. Murnau’s silent vampire classic Nosferatu receives its second remake, courtesy of Robert Eggers, acclaimed director of The Witch, The Lighthouse and The Northman. As with its predecessors (including Werner Herzog’s 1979 remake with Klaus Kinski), it’s a thinly veiled retread of Bram Stoker’s Dracula with the names changed to avoid copyright infringement, and as such, it’s a slice of sumptuous Gothic horror with a palpable erotic charge, thanks to Eggers’ distinctive vision.
Set in early 19th century Germany, the film begins with newly married junior estate agent Thomas Hutter accepting a commission from his suspiciously twitchy boss Herr Knock to travel to Transylvania and oversee the signing of a contract by the sinister Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgard). “The Actor” (2025) feels like a Charlie Kaufman script directed by Damien Chazelle. It is bittersweet, charming, and immersive like a Chazelle film that lingers in your mind long after, but it follows a dreamlike logic and revels in its inherent absurdity like a Kaufman script. Somehow, their distinct styles coalesce in Duke Johnson’s surrealistic mystery film to offer a captivating confusion. It constantly puts its protagonist, Paul Cole (André Holland), at odds with himself. After waking up from an accident, he learns that he was beaten up for sleeping with a married woman. He loses most of his memories.
The husband shows no mercy to this man and throws him out. Suddenly, he finds himself stranded in a small town with no one to call his own. He enters with no recollection of the life he had led till then. He only vaguely recalls someone calling him ‘an actor’ in the hospital.

I get it. Adaptations are hard. Turning a hit book into a movie is tricky, especially when the books in question — in this case, the "Harry Potter" series — are very, very long. The longest "Potter" book, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," contains a whopping 870 pages in its US hardcover edition, so obviously not every single detail is bound to make it during the adaptation process. Still, the "Harry Potter" film franchise, which spanned eight movies, left a lot behind, and some of it is pretty important!
There are actually a whole bunch of "Harry Potter" plotlines and characters that didn't make it from the books to the movies, but here I'm going to try and note some of the most important ones.
As Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint), and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) learn magic at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, they meet a lot of people.

When Duke Johnson was making the Oscar-nominated animated feature “Anomalisa” with Charlie Kaufman, Kaufman suggested Johnson read “Memory,” a lost Donald Westlake novel that had recently been published. (Kaufman had heard about its resurrection on NPR.) The novel, about a man named Paul Cole, who finds himself stranded in a small town with a head injury after being attacked by the jealous husband of Paul’s lover, had been completed in 1963 and shopped around by Westlake, with no takers. An attempt was made in the 1970s to shop it around again but Westlake, one of the great American crime fiction writers, declined. After his death in 2008, it was finally published by Hard Case Crime two years later.

It can be difficult to step out of the shadow of a creative collaborator, which Duke Johnson does fitfully with “The Actor,” his first live-action theatrical feature. Though Johnson has had a steady career for close to two decades, principally in stop-motion animation for television, he is perhaps best known for co-directing “Anomalisa” with Charlie Kaufman. A full decade later, Kaufman (who serves as an executive producer on “The Actor”) still has a marked influence on Johnson’s solo directorial debut, though it is awkwardly grafted onto a noir-inflected tale — based on the novel “Memory” by Donald E. Westlake — of a man recovering from amnesia and attempting to rediscover who he is.
That man is Paul Cole (André Holland), a member of a New York City theater troupe on the last leg of a Midwest tour. As the film begins, he is preparing to bed a married woman before her...

Co-directed by Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson, 2015’s “Anomalisa” told a walking nightmare of a story about a motivational speaker who perceives (almost) everyone he meets to be the same identical stranger. They all share the same face, they all speak with the same voice, and they all reflect the inescapable self-absorption of the main character, whose hell is that he can only see the world through the prism of his own two eyes.
“The Actor” — Johnson’s solo feature debut — is a similarly dream-like film about a man suffering from the exact opposite problem. His name is Paul Cole, he’s a rising star of the New York stage, and we’re first introduced to him on a dark and fateful night in the fictional town of Jeffords, Ohio, where his theater troupe has just performed their latest show. Paul takes a local gal to his hotel room for a nightcap,...

Robert Eggers had made a name for himself as a very creative and original director before tackling Nosferatu, a remake of the 1922 German silent film by F.W. Murnau. However, even with the success he's had previously, Nosferatu reached new heights.
The gothic horror had been a longtime passion project for the director, who intended to direct Nosferatufollowing his 2015 directorial debut, The Witch. He decided to focus on other projects before that, helming 2019's The Lighthouse and 2022's The Northman instead. Nosferatu hit theaters on Dec. 25, 2024, and will head to streaming on Peacock on Feb. 21, Variety reports.

Exclusive: Zygi Kamasa, the veteran film executive who launched True Brit Entertainment 15 months ago, is on a scary mission to bring back Britain’s horror film heritage. Today, he reveals that his company will release period shocker The Dreadful starring Game of Thrones duo Sophie Turner and Kit Harington and Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden in the UK.
“I feel very much that I want to go further in trying to encourage the UK industry to make more horror movies because horror still works consistently well in cinemas,” Kamasa insists, citing the success of last year’s occult horror Longlegs.
Sophie Turner, Kit Harington
But Longlegs, and many other recent horror movies, were American made.
“If we’re going to do horror in this country, go back. I mean we were dominating horror in the Sixties and Seventies, the Hammer horror and all that.

Robert Eggers made his directorial debut in 2015 with The Witch. Nosferatu was a longtime passion project for the director, and was supposed to be his second film, but he later decided to wait, and the decision paid off.
Following his directorial debut, Eggers directed the 2019's The Lighthouse and 2022's The Northman, both of which received positive reviews from the critics. The Lighthouse was his first project to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Achievement in Cinematography, and making Nosferatu his fourth film paid off. The horror gothic has broken a new record for Eggers, receiving four Oscar nominations at the 97th Academy Awards.

Robert Eggers' Nosferatu proved to be a huge success for Focus Features, and the acclaimed filmmaker is staying with the studio - and firmly in the horror genre - for his next project.
THR reports that Eggers is set to helm Werwulf, which he also co-wrote with fellow The Northman scribe Sjón.
Just in case the title didn't give it away, this will be a werewolf movie. Plot details are few and far between, but THR notes that the story will be set in 13th century England. "The script also features dialogue that was true to the time period and has translations and annotations for those uninitiated to Old English."
It remains to be seen if the werewolf will be rocking a moustache.
Apparently, Eggers was initially planning to shoot the film in black and white, before deciding against it.

Continuing its relationship with filmmaker Robert Eggers, Focus Features will produce and finance his next film, “Werwulf,” according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
The film will be released in North America on Christmas Day, 2026. “Werwulf” follows the release of the tremendously successful film “Nosferatu,” which quickly became the biggest non-sequel Horror opening in 2024.
“Werwulf” is written by Eggers and Sjón (“The Northman”), with Eggers set to direct. Both Eggers and Sjón will produce alongside Focus Features, with Maiden Voyage’s Chris and Eleanor Columbus executive producing.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the news, “while details are scarce, sources say the story is set in 13th century England.”
“Nosferatu” is an adaptation of the 1922 silent movie classic, itself a loose adaptation of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula,” with a starry cast that includes Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney and Willem Dafoe.

“Nosferatu” is a horror movie starring Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Willem Dafoe. It is written and directed by Robert Eggers.
In the realm of remakes, “Nosferatu” emerges as a striking homage to F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic, “Nosferatu”. Directed by Robert Eggers, this modern interpretation of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” manages to walk the tightrope between reverence for its source material and contemporary cinematic sensibilities.
Eggers’ vision is steeped in the aesthetic of German expressionism, a bold choice in today’s film landscape. The movie’s visual language is a feast for the eyes, with stark contrasts, distorted perspectives, and haunting shadows that echo the original’s iconic imagery. This stylistic approach serves as both a nod to film history and a refreshing departure from conventional horror cinematography.

The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here) made its way out into theatres last month and has stirred up a lot of positive reactions, with JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray even describing the film as a new horror classic in his 10/10 review. While the look of the title character was kept under wraps in the build-up to the film’s release, now that the movie has been out in the world for a month and has even received a digital release, Focus Feature has decided to start selling 6 foot tall standees of the Count. It has become a common practice for many movies to give away their key elements in the trailer or promotional interviews to convince people to come to the theater. Nosferatu didn't follow the same pattern.
The horror, which premiered in theaters on Dec. 25, kept Bill Skarsgård's look as Count Orlok a secret until the film's release in theaters. All the promotional material continued to keep the undead count in the shadows, all the way to its release on digital on Jan. 21. Now, Focus Features gave a greenlight at the unveiling of Skarsgård's scary bloodsucker online, and, during a behind-the-scenes interview with Entertainment Weekly, the horror veteran admitted he was never more scared playing a character than he was when playing Orlok.

Robert Eggers' Nosferatu is a psychosexual nightmare that feeds on the darkest corners of desire, lust, and terror. The gothic horror masterpiece assaults your senses with haunting visuals, eerie sound design, and top-notch performance. Through a truly unrecognizable and transformative performance from Bill Skarsgard as Count Orlok and a career-defining performance from Lily Rose-Depp as the tormented Ellen, Nosferatu is the kind of horror film that gives fans a renewed sense of pride in the genre. Skarsgard fully transforms into the ancient vampire Orlok in an incredibly committed performance, but the show belongs to Depp.

Robert Eggers' Nosferatu is the highly anticipated remake of F.W. Murnau's 1922 German silent film of the same name. It is a visually beautiful gothic horror masterpiece featuring stellar performances and a haunting score. The film follows a couple living in 1838 Germany, Thomas (Nicholas Hoult) and Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp), as Thomas travels to Transylvania to meet the mysterious Count Orlok to negotiate a real estate deal. During Thomas' journey, Ellen begins to experience the same violent, almost orgasmic night terrors she once experienced years ago. Fearful for his wife's safety after Orlok makes remarks about Ellen, he desperately tries to return home to warn her.

With Robert Eggers' Nosferatu now playing in theaters worldwide, Focus Features has decided to unveil our first official look at Bill Skarsgård as the titular vampire, Count Orlok.
We have seen several leaked shots already (see below), and this featurette does keep Orlok in the shadows, only showing his full visage very briefly right at the end.
So, if you haven't seen the movie yet, you're safe enough giving this a watch, because you'll see a lot more (maybe a little too much) of the character in the actual film.
Even so, here's your spoiler warning.

Nosferatu has broken a major horror movie record by surpassing Longlegs at the box office. The latter movie, which was directed by Osgood Perkins, is a smash hit serial killer thriller starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage that grossed $127 million worldwide against a slim budget of less than $10 million after debuting on July 12, 2024. The Nosferatu release came much later, as the Robert Eggers remake of the iconic 1922 silent vampire film of the same name debuted on Christmas Day, becoming the highest-grossing new release over the holiday weekend.
Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Nosferatu is projected to close out its third weekend in theaters with a 3-day domestic gross of $6.8 million in North America and $13.7 million internationally. Halloween must be gone, but people always enjoy a good horror on the big screen. Thus, Nosferatu is having a good time at the US box office. The film has surpassed two of the most popular horror flicks of 2024, Smile 2 and Longlegs. Scroll below for the deets.
Parker Finn directed Smile 2 debuted in the US with $23 million, which was higher than the original Smile’s debut of $22.6 million in 2022. However, the sequel earned less than the first film in its lifetime. Meanwhile, Longlegs by Osgood Perkins became the highest-grossing independent film of 2024. It was also the second highest-grossing R-rated horror released in 2024. The movie collected $74.34 million in North America, which has now been surpassed by the vampire movie.

Robert Eggers has become an extremely recognizable name in the horror community, especially among fans of so-called "elevated horror," having risen to prominence as a writer and director with his first two feature-length projects, The Witch (2015) and The Lighthouse (2019). He had experience prior to this with short films, but it was the premiere of The Witch that really introduced him to audiences and cemented his place as a popular horror creator.
His latest film, Nosferatu, was released in theaters on December 25th, 2024. This new project is a reimagining of the original 1922 German silent film of the same name — it's a large-scale, high-budget recreation and expansion of the original story, in which Eggers attempts to create his own epic folktale from the material. But for fans of classic cinema, and of the original Nosferatu in particular, the question remains — is this new version necessary?

Robert Eggers' Nosferatu remake is a masterclass in honoring gothic horror tradition. One of many nods to the 1922 Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror is having Knock (played by Simon McBurney in 2024) exclaim: "The blood is the life!" This is a great homage to the German expressionist classic, in which Knock similarly says "Blood is life!" It also has literary and cultural origins which explain the terror of vampire lore used in Nosferatu.
On the surface, it may seem like an obvious reference to the essential commonality in vampire lore: a vampire drinking blood to sustain their vitality in their immortal life. However, the background of Bram Stoker's original novel and real history makes the quote multilayered and all the more satisfying. Its potency in Eggers' adaptation is part of what has made vampires truly gothic again, contributing to the relief of Nosferatu's great box office success following the woefully under-appreciated The Northman.

Nosferatu, Robert Eggers' take on F.W. Murnau's classic 1992 silent film of the same name, both inspired by Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula, is a major success. Despite the film's surprising release on Christmas, Nosferatu has put a stake in an important global milestone.
The horror has Bill Skarsgård transforming into his most terrifying role yet — Count Orlok. The film also includes a cast made up of Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Willem Dafoe, Ralph Ineson, and Simon McBurney. During its second weekend at the box office, Nosferatu has already passed the $100 million milestone, Variety reports.
