Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem's Controversial 'mother' Comes to Paramount+
Image
Darren Aronofksy's extremely polarizing horror filmmother! has found a new streaming home on Paramount+, giving subscribers a chance to re-evaluate a release that divided audiences in 2017. Some were swept up in Aronofsky's star-studded metaphor, but just as many were disgusted by how far he was willing to go to make a point.

The plot can be summed up as the story of a woman who's living with her husband, an author, in a mansion in the middle of nowhere. He's suffering from writer's block, and she spends her days renovating the house. When a stranger knocks on their door, and his family arrives soon thereafter, an ordeal begins for the woman. Per the Rotten Tomatoes synopsis of the film:

A young woman spends her days renovating the Victorian mansion that she lives in with her husband in the countryside. When a stranger knocks on the door one night, he becomes...

Horror Classic Rosemary's Baby Has A Sequel That's Almost Impossible To Watch Today
Image
Roman Polanski's "Rosemary's Baby" is a controversial horror classic with a legacy that transcends cinema. Not only is it a terrifying tale of Satanic cults and devilish pregnancies, but the apartment the movie was shot in is reportedly haunted. What's more, the wave of real-life deaths surrounding "Rosemary's Baby" has given it a "cursed" reputation, further adding to its eerie sensibilities. Polanski's chiller is infamous, but the same can't be said about its sequel, "Look What Happened to Rosemary's Baby" -- a made-for-television cheapie from 1976 that most people have forgotten about. Either that, or they are trying their best to erase it from their memories.

Directed by Sam O'Steen, the forgotten ABC sequel chronicles Rosemary's son, Andrew (Stephen McHattie), from his childhood through to his adult years. What a life he lives, too, as he's kidnapped by a sex worker, Marjean (Tina Louise), at an early age and...

This 2013 Supernatural Horror Delivers an Inventive Ghost Story With Unpredictable Twists
Image
In 2013, Haunter, a Canadian supernatural horror directed by Vincenzo Nataliand starring Abigail Breslin and Stephen McHattie, went relatively unnoticed — quite undeservedly so. Partly, it didn't get much attention since, after its premiere at the SXSW film festival, it only got a limited release. The other reason might be that by 2013 the audience seemed to move on from ghosts altogether, as the supernatural genre was mostly preoccupied with demons and mythical entities.

The One Missing Character Who Must Return For Jesse Stone 10 (Not Viola Davis' Molly)
Image
If Jesse Stone 10 happens, then Kathy Baker's Rose Must return. While each Jesse Stone movie is designed to be somewhat standalone, they are best viewed in order. They all feature recurring characters and arcs, so it's just a richer experience to view them as a series. Now Blue Blues has ended talk of Jesse Stone 10 has become more concrete, with star Tom Selleck stating he'd love to return as the troubled Paradise police chief.

That said, it's been a decade since the last TV movie, Lost in Paradise, which was also notable for the absence of several familiar faces. Stephen McHattie's Captain Healy was missing for the first time - as was Kathy Baker's Rose. Following Viola Davis' Molly exiting Jesse Stone with the fourth movie Sea Change, Baker's Rose stepped in to take her place. Rose soon became one of Jesse's closest friends, and is one of...

Tom Selleck's Next Jesse Stone Movie Has The Perfect Role For Donnie Wahlberg After Blue Bloods
Image
If Tom Selleck is returning to Jesse Stone now that Blue Bloods has officially wrapped, there is a perfect role for co-star Donnie Wahlberg to take on. Before Blue Bloods arrived, Selleck was busy co-writing and starring in the Jesse Stone movies, a series of noirish mysteries. Selleck's busy schedule with CBS' long-running police drama prevented him from returning to Stone in recent years, but now Blue Bloods has ended there's talk of Jesse Stone 10 coming together.

Selleck has stated his interest more than once - though he told TV Insider that he doesn't know what his next gig will be. It's been close to a decade since he last played Jesse, so much will have changed in the Paradise police chief's life in the intervening years. The next Jesse Stone would be smart to add some Blue Bloods cast members to the ensemble to draw more eyeballs to the TV movie saga,...

Tom Selleck's 9 Jesse Stone Movies, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
While his most iconic work will always be appearing in and as Magnum P.I., Tom Selleck, in his 50 years in Hollywood, has also achieved two long-standing roles as law enforcement officials the more iconic protagonist of Blue Bloods, which ended with season 14, and the titular character of the Jesse Stone film series, based on the novels written by Robert B. Parker and one of Selleck's often forgotten roles. Spanning a decade, the series comprises nine made-for-tv films, following the police chief of Paradise, Massachusetts as he investigates major crime in the seemingly quiet and undisturbed town.

Fired from his job with the LAPD due to a drinking problem which began after Jesse's divorce from his wife, he found a job in law enforcement in a quiet town near Boston. But all is not as it seems as Jesse gradually uncovers corruption and conspiracies to protect criminals and keep illegal...

Jesse Stone: Thin Ice Broke Two Franchise Traditions (& Featured The Darkest Ending)
Image
Jesse Stone: Thin Ice broke a couple of franchise traditions - and ended on the bleakest note of the entire series. Thin Ice is the fifth entry in the Jesse Stone movie series, which adapted the Robert B. Parker novels of the same name. Parker gave Selleck two rules to follow while adapting Jesse Stone; one, Stone will always be hung up about his ex-wife Jenn, and two, he will always have a problem with drink (via TV Insider). This formula keeps the character trapped in a toxic loop, but Thin Ice needed to mix things up after four movies.

The TV movie features the same cast of characters - though Viola Davis' Molly left after the fourth entry Sea Change - as previous Jesse Stone movies, with Selleck's grizzled police chief looking into two cases. He's looking into who shot his friend Captain Healy (Stephen McHattie), and a cold...

Now Wave: An Interview with Beth B
Image
Salvation!: Have You Said Your Prayers Today?.Across five decades, artist and filmmaker Beth B has produced a dazzlingly diverse body of work, spanning cinema, television, installation art, and performance. She made her name as a pioneer of No Wave, a movement that emerged during a legendary period of subcultural creativity in New York. In the late 1970s, when B graduated from the School of Visual Arts, musicians, artists, and filmmakers were finding their place in the bankrupt city. In the vacant lots and crumbling apartments of downtown Manhattan, an outsider community emerged, a loosely affiliated group of misfits connected by their overlapping social circles, fierce creativity, and raw, anti-everything attitude. This proximity fostered an explosion of collaborative artmaking, within which B played a central role. Alongside her then partner, Scott B, she made a series of Super 8 and 16mm experiments, which they called “B Movies,” that exemplified what...

Doug Bradley in Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988)
The “Dumb Fun” of Renny Harlin’s Homoerotic ‘The Covenant’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Doug Bradley in Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988)
Forgiven for Forgetting

After starting the year with one of the best horror sequels of all time in Hellbound: Hellraiser II, we moved into the hilariously smart German satire Killer Condom. Trace and I should have known the good times wouldn’t last!

With this week’s discussion of Renny Harlin‘s The Covenant, we begin a two-week stretch of poorly rated, very dumb thrillers. In the film, Caleb (Steven Strait) is a member of the popular Boys of Ipswich at an elite boarding school. He also has a dangerous birthright: the men in his family can use The Power to get what they want.

The trade-off? The more they use their abilities, the faster they age, as evidenced by his father’s (Stephen McHattie) condition.

Things change with the arrival of dangerous bad boy Chase (Sebastian Stan). Suddenly both Caleb’s relationship with Sarah (Laura Ramsey) and his 18th birthday ascension are under threat.

Shoot 'Em Up offered a unique, over-the-top approach to the action genre, inspired by Hard Boiled and filled with memorable one-liners and wild concepts. The movie benefited from Peter Pau's cinematography and Clive Owen's dedication to doing his own stunts. Despite a modest budget and positive reviews, Shoot 'Em Up underperformed at the box office, possibly due to a controversial guerrilla marketing campaign.

As the action genre enjoys a newfound dominance on the big screen, Clive Owen reflects on the failure of Shoot 'Em Up. The 2007 movie starred Owen as Smith, a mysterious drifter who inadvertently becomes the guardian of a baby being hunted by a ruthless assassin and his henchmen. Alongside Owen, the ensemble cast included Paul Giamatti, Monica Bellucci, Stephen McHattie, Greg Byrk and Daniel Pilon. Though produced on a modest budget of $39 million and garnering solid reviews from critics, the movie performed poorly at the box office,...

Amandla Stenberg

Stenberg says of the track in a press release, “I wrote this track from the bathroom of a hotel in a tiny town situated between mountains of snow in northern Ontario during the filming of our movie My Animal. Sometimes my costar Bobbi and I wandered up and down the icy block that made up downtown, but most of the time we found solace from the cold in our room together, singing on handheld karaoke mics. This song came from that place of deep isolation and playfulness.”

My Animal, the feature debut of director Jacqueline Castel,...

Patrick Wilson Thinks Zack Snyder's Watchmen Paved the Way for Avengers
Image
Almost 15 years have passed since Zack Snyder took his first steps into the world of superheroes with Watchmen, the adaptation of Alan Moore's popular story brought to the pages of comics alongside Dave Gibbons and John Higgins. However, it is still considered one of the best adaptations of the genre in all of history.

Following a style similar to the one seen on The Boys today, Watchmen shows a world where superheroes occupy a very different place than what movies and series usually show. Watchmen is set in a world where superheroes are illegal. However, one of them, Rorschach, is still actively acting in the shadows.

One day, a former superhero is murdered and Rorschach begins to investigate what happened, gathering his former colleagues to warn them of a possible conspiracy against them in the middle of a world crisis because of the Cold War.

Watchmen starred Jackie Earle Haley,...

Sisko's DS9 Disappearance Conspiracy Is A Great Star Trek Story
Image
A joke about the disappearance of Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) in Star Trek: Lower Decks creates a great story for a Star Trek: Deep Space Nine revival. In Lower Decks season 3, episode 5, "Reflections", Ensigns Bradward Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) are assigned to the Starfleet recruitment booth. While attempting to inspire the next generation of Starfleet recruits, Mariner and Boimler were quizzed on the whereabouts of Benjamin Sisko, who Mariner says is currently "working really hard in the Celestial Temple".

Sisko's return has long been the top of the wish list for many Star Trek fans, and the gag about Sisko "truthers" in Lower Decks could be spun out into a larger story. May 22nd 2023 marks the first ever The Sisko Day, an annual celebration of Avery Brooks' iconic Star Trek captain established by Jake Sisko actor Cirroc Lofton. With The Sisko Day following...

A DS9 Classic Sisko Episode Owes A Weird Debt To Batman
Image
One of the greatest Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes, "In the Pale Moonlight," owes a weird but amusing debut to Tim Burton's 1989 blockbuster, Batman. "In the Pale Moonlight" is one of the seminal DS9 episodes spotlighted in Peter Holmstrom's oral history, The Center Seat: 55 years of Star Trek. It turns out the classic episode's familiar title has a funny origin borne from genuine confusion.

Ranking high among Captain Benjamin Sisko's (Avery Brooks) best episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, "In the Pale Moonlight" involves a desperate Sisko's attempts to turn the tide of the Dominion War by tricking the Romulans into siding with the United Federation of Planets. Bookended by a riveting Captain's Log explaining his decisions, Sisko reveals his conspiracy with Elim Garak (Andrew Robinson) to fool Romulan Senator Vreenak (Stephen McHattie) into believing the Dominion planned to betray the Romulans. Vreenak quickly determined...

The (French) Language Lesson in ‘Pontypool’ [Maple Syrup Massacre]
Image
Maple Syrup Massacre is an editorial series where Joe Lipsett dissects the themes, conventions and contributions of new and classic Canadian horror films. Spoilers follow…

Language is paramount in Pontypool, Bruce McDonald’s Canadian (don’t call it zombie) thriller. The film concerns a shock jock DJ and his pair of female colleagues who manage a radio station over the course of a morning as a word-based pathogen destroys the surrounding community.

Based on the book by Tony Burgess (who also wrote the screenplay), the film is a single location thriller that relies heavily on its small cast and mildly claustrophobic setting. Dialogue and audio flesh out not only the world and the looming threat; it also captures the power and impact of language.

It’s vital that Grant Mazzy (Canadian screen legend Stephen McHattie) is something of a disgrace at the beginning of the film. He’s only recently...

Celebrating the Viral Valentine’s Day Horrors of Pontypool
Image
Valentine’s Day is upon us, and as we’re doing our annual rewatches of My Bloody Valentine (both versions—don’t skimp) or 2001’s Valentine, it’s important to remember that we have another holiday-appropriate horror movie to add to the fun. And it’s a film that happens to be celebrating its 15th birthday this year. Happy birthday to Pontypool, a zombie film that doesn’t get nearly enough attention, despite the fact that it brings a truly unique vision to the table.

Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2008, Pontypool is a zombie movie like no other. Like other recent favorites, it puts its own stamp on the material and creates something memorable. It rethinks the idea of what makes a zombie, taking the things we know and love about the mythology and bending them into a different form to create something unique, while still paying...

Sundance 2023: ‘My Animal’ Review
Image
Stars: Bobbi Salvör Menuez, Amandla Stenberg, Stephen McHattie | Written by Jae Matthews | Directed by Jacqueline Castel

With her homelife hampered by an alcoholic mother and a hockey team who keeps her on the sidelines, Heather has a lot to grapple with — including the fact that she’s actually a werewolf. When she meets promising ice-skating star Jonny, Heather’s world turns upside down, willing to risk her own safety in the name of blossoming romance. As Jonny seems content to join her on the outskirts, Heather is left to battle the horrors that lie in wait within herself.

Werewolves… haven’t we seen them somewhere before? From Werewolf By Night to half of the cast of Twilight, it’s a trope film has visited countless times — and it could easily be argued that we don’t need to again. If a filmmaker is going to tackle one of the stereotypical genre cornerstones,...

My Animal Review: Castel’s Steamy, Stylistic Debut Is Uneven [Sundance]
Image
Jacqueline Castel, award-winning director and screenwriter, returned to the Sundance Film Festival to premiere a new take on a classic werewolf tale in My Animal. The film stars Bobbi Salvör Menuez as Heather, the redheaded social misfit whose animalistic transformation during a full moon keeps her as a prisoner in her own life. The screenplay, written by Jae Matthews, focuses on the human elements of connection, sexuality, and freedom. Though these themes elevate this lopsided screenplay to a film worth watching, the limitations are hard to ignore. My Animal, despite all the efforts from Castel’s direction, is bogged down by its snail-like pacing and uneventful genre-blending.

Heather, a teenager struggling against the constrictive forces in her small town life in Canada, longs to escape her stifling family dynamic. Her mother, Patti (Heidi von Palleske), is a longtime alcoholic whose condition affects the entire family dynamic. Then, there’s the...

‘My Animal’ Review: Amandla Stenberg in a Moody Queer Werewolf Thriller
Image
Indisputably the best female-centric werewolf movie shot in Canada since Ginger Snaps (2000) — admittedly not the most competitive of fields — sensual queer horror story My Animal marks an impressive, confident feature debut for several key talents. First and foremost, debutante director Jacqueline Castel, already an experienced short film and music video helmer who has collaborated with David Lynch and John Carpenter, imbues this first-feature script by Jae Matthews with a woozy, dreamy, retro sensibility. (Matthews is also half of the electronic band Boy Harsher along with Augustus Muller, who contribute a very John Carpenter-esque soundtrack of sustained drones and bass-heavy humming.)

Altogether, the team creates a richly hued setting for the young but in some ways more seasoned leads. Bobbi Salvor Menuez (I Love Dick) stars as a lovelorn teen-wolf living in the sticks who looks at Amandla Stenberg’s (Bodies Bodies Bodies) figure skater with the kind of longing you...

‘My Animal’ Sundance Interview – Director Jacqueline Castel on the Film’s Fresh Werewolf Metaphor
Image
Director Jacqueline Castel and screenwriter Jae Matthews (The Runner) give a new spin on the werewolf mythos with My Animal (read my review here).

The feature debut by Castel, which made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, sees a teen outcast connect with and fall for a town newcomer, igniting a personal transformation. My Animal stars Bobbi Salvör Menuez, Amandla Stenberg, Stephen Mchattie, Heidi Von Palleske, Cory Lipman, and Joe Apollonio.

Bloody Disgusting spoke with Castel about her debut, the werewolf metaphor, and the symbolism behind her use of the color red.

Castel breaks down what attracted her to Matthews’ script and its approach to the werewolf metaphor, both as Otherness and Heather’s (Salvör Menuez) sexual discovery.

“I’m connected to outsider stories,” Castle explains. “I’m interested in telling outsider stories and stories that exist on the fringes of society. That was something that attracted me...

My Animal Review: A Queer Werewolf Tale With Style To Spare [Sundance]
Image
The werewolf — the idea that a human being can suddenly transform into a savage beast — has fascinated people for centuries, from folklore and mythology to books and, of course, films. The movies have always loved a good werewolf tale, be it "The Wolf Man," "An American Werewolf in London," "Ginger Snaps," or, uh, "Teen Wolf." "My Animal" is the latest entry in the never-ending subgenre, and it's not your typical lycanthrope flick. A moody slow burn loaded with style and a killer score, "My Animal" is a queer werewolf tale using the idea of the werewolf to symbolize its lead character's inner struggles. In other words, don't expect a ton of cool transformation scenes where someone suddenly grows fur and sprouts fangs.

Heather, played by Bobbi Salvör Menuez, is a young woman who also happens to turn into a wolf when the moon is full and the clock strikes midnight.
