Halsey on Learning From Sydney Sweeney on ‘Americana’ and Creating Her Own New Series: “Really Cool to Be Part of a Project I Don’t Face”
Image
Halsey has been making the transition from musician to movie star in recent years — including with a breakout role in 2024’s MaXXXine — but the first major project she shot is just now making its way to theaters.

Americana — a modern western from writer-director Tony Tost which follows several people as their lives violently intertwine while fighting over an expensive Native American ghost shirt— was shot in 2022, premiered at SXSW in 2023 and is finally heading to this big screen this month.

“I’d been waiting a really long time, I’d been really cautiously picky about what I was going to do for my first project for getting into this world, into this space,” Halsey told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Sunday. “Tony reached out and he was so personable and so talented and I just really connected with the script and the character. Image
George R.R. Martin is often tied to Game of Thrones, and its prequel, House of the Dragon, which were based on his popular novel series A Song of Ice and Fire. Following the popularity of the fantasy series, Martin has further branched out and produced a popular Western thriller: Dark Winds.

The series premiered in 2022 on AMC and AMC+. Although the neo-Western thriller features exciting reviews and praise for its cultural approach, it was widely underrated until recently, when it started gaining traction on streaming services. Per What's on Netflix,Dark Winds fans have just received some bad news as the series is set to leave Netflix on Aug. 19.

George Rr Martin's Western Thriller Show With 100% on Rotten Tomatoes Is Quietly Climbing the Streaming Charts
Image
George R.R. Martin is unequivocally forever tied to the A Song of Ice and Fire book series, which inspired the hit series Game of Thrones, and its prequel, House of the Dragon. However, the author has been involved in many other exciting projects that have nothing to do with the fantasy worlds.

One such example is the Western thriller series Dark Winds, for which Martin is a producer. A perfect whodunit, the highly underrated show has mostly fallen under the radar but received extreme praise for its performances and cultural representation. Per FlixPatrol, Dark Winds has just received a bump in the charts on AMC+, settling in eighth place.

Fans looking for a glimpse of dragons, realism, and fantasy will not get that with Dark Winds, but there is plenty of mystery and interesting characters. The AMC series follows Navajo Tribal Police officers, who are assigned to the Four Corners...

Critics’ Conversation: 2025 Emmy Nominations Take a Typically Shallow Dive Into TV’s Best
Image
Daniel Fienberg: Say what you will about Emmy voters, but when they like something, they Really like it.

My biggest takeaway, as I’m picking my way through the nominations for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, is how top-heavy the list is. Twenty-seven nominations for Severance! Twenty-four nominations for The Penguin! Twenty-three nominations apiece for The Studio and The White Lotus!

So many of these juggernauts received nominations so completely across the board — the dominance of White Lotus and Severance in the supporting categories is especially impressive — that I found myself more distracted by the standouts from those casts who didn’t get nominated than those who did. Where’s Rhenzy Feliz for The Penguin? Or Chase Sui Wonders for The Studio? Or Lisa from Blackpink for The White Lotus (or Carrie Coon’s vacation buddies, I suppose)?

It’s a myopia that leads to the consistent impression that...

Emmy Nominations 2025: Snubs and Surprises
Image
When we talk about snubs and surprises with this year’s Emmy nominations, we’re at times stretching each term. Some of the “snubs” mentioned below involve shows or performances that weren’t necessarily the best, but fit the pattern of the kinds of things that usually get nominated, while others were great but were expected to be ignored. And some of the surprises are more about matters of degree, rather than their presence at all. Let’s get to it.

Surprise: The Studio dominates

It was a great morning...

Amid Prequel Series News, Denzel Washington’s Post-Apocalyptic Western Dethrones ‘Dark Winds’ on Streaming
Image
It's not often that you find a film with an impeccable 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Such has been the appeal and success of AMC+'s modern Western series Dark Winds. Created by Graham Roland and based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee novels, Dark Winds has been one of AMC+’s most successful original series since its debut in 2022. Set in the 1970s American Southwest, the show centers on Navajo police officers Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) as they investigate crimes deeply entangled with Native traditions and personal trauma.

However, in the world of streaming charts, with its potential for volatility, Dark Winds has found itself knocked down a couple of pegs on the streaming charts. The unexpected challenger? The Book of Eli, the 2010 Denzel Washington-led post-apocalyptic action film that’s suddenly enjoying a second wind. The renewed interest in The Book of Eli isn...

AMC's Flawless Western Show With 100% on Rotten Tomatoes Loses to a 15-Year-Old Denzel Washington Movie on the Streaming Charts
Image
AMC+'s modern Western series Dark Winds has been a major success since its debut in 2022. As fans await a new season, Dark Winds has remained in the charts despite Season 3 ending in late April.

However, the hit Western show is slowly losing its position. Per FlixPatrol, Dark Winds has fallen two positions, and has exchanged places with a 15-year-old Denzel Washington movie: the post-apocalyptic film The Book of Eli. The film has been steadily rising the charts on AMC+, and has replaced Dark Winds in the seventh spot.

The adventure series Nautilus topped the charts, replacing The Walking Dead: Dead City. They were followed by the new limited series Hell Motel, and the sci-fi horror Ash. In fifth place there was the crime thriller Neighborhood Watch, the second Jeffrey Dean Morgan title in the Top 10, a film that reunited him with The Boys star Jack Quaid. In sixth place...

Titus Welliver is taking on a different kind of challenge in AMC's crime drama Dark Winds. Following the conclusion of his ten-year run as Harry Bosch on Prime Video's Bosch universe, Welliver will switch sides with his character Dominic McNair in Dark Winds Season 4. Bosch star Titus Welliver has officially joined Season 4 of AMC‘s critically acclaimed series Dark Winds in a slight reversal of roles as the actor takes on the other side of the law. While little is known about Season 4’s storylines, the 70s-set series will continue to follow the adventures of Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) as he solves mysteries as part of the Navajo Tribal Police. The Greatest Modern Western Series of All Time (With 100% on Rotten Tomatoes) Is Climbing the Streaming Charts
Image
Dark Winds is on AMC+'s most-viewed top ten this week. A crime drama at its core, the TV show's masterful blend of procedural, noir, Western, mystery, and even supernatural elements appeals to a broader fan base.

AMC's Dark Winds has ranked sixth on the streaming platform's top ten list (per FlixPatrol). The Western drama is up two spots, outpacing Black Snow and Fallen this week. Dark Winds wrapped up Season 3 in April, its fourth season already greenlit. Echoing the tone and themes of cult favorites like Breaking Bad, True Detective, The X-Files, and even Twin Peaks, Dark Winds transcends the modern Western genre, its narrative explored from a distinctly Native American perspective.

And the Emmy Nominations Should Go to…
Image
The key races for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards couldn’t be more different.

The comedy categories appear to be heading for another showdown between The Bear — once again prompting an obligatory “Is it a drama or a comedy?” debate — and Hacks, with several returning shows still in the mix while the drama fields, which Shōgun dominated last year, are wide open.

While voters can, and in many cases should, absolutely go back to prior favorites like The White Lotus, Severance and The Last of Us, the THR television critics have recommendations on some familiar and some quirky and offbeat ways to fill out ballots.

Voting for the nomination round closes on Monday, June 23, with nominations announced on Tuesday, July 15. The 2025 Emmys will air on CBS and Paramount+ on Sept. 14, with Nate Bargatze serving as host.

Adolescence

The Netflix drama gets attention for its flashy elements: a zeitgeisty focus on the manosphere, the tour-de-force acting (including from newbie Owen Cooper) and astonishing single takes. But it’s the nuances — a temperature shift during a contentious conversation, the waves of pain crashing over hard-earned moments of joy — that make this an indelible portrait of masculinity in crisis. — Angie Han

Airing as a quartet of three-episode installments leading into Rogue One, Tony Gilroy’s Disney+ upheaval of all things Star Wars is the year’s most thematically ambitious series. ‘Dark Winds’ Star Zahn McClarnon: “I’ve Learned More in the Last Four Seasons Than in 30 Years”
Image
Zahn McClarnon has been a film and TV actor for more than 30 years, and in that time, he’s often played, as he puts it, “the bad guy or Indian No. 1 over here by the tipi.” He went on to be featured in a succession of popular shows, including Longmire, Westworld and Fargo, as well as playing the quirky police officer (and Big Foot enthusiast) Big on FX’s Reservation Dogs.

So when George R.R. Martin and Robert Redford called him a few years ago asking him to be No. 1 on the call sheet for AMC’s ’70s-set Navajo detective series Dark Winds, there was no hesitation. What followed was a learning experience that surpassed anything he had done before, culminating in his upcoming directing debut in season four. The recently released third season saw McClarnon go deep into his character’s past, uncovering repressed traumas that mirror experiences in McClarnon’s own life,...

Zahn McClarnon and the ‘Dark Winds’ cast on representation, resonance and Season 4 surprises
Image
Warning: This story contains spoilers from Season 3 of Dark Winds.

Dark Winds is ready for its close-up. With a 100 percent Tomatometer score and multiple spotlights shining on lead actor and executive producer Zahn McClarnon, this 1970s noir series set on the Navajo Nation is garnering attention far beyond the rez.

McClarnon and the cast, including Season 3 guest star Jenna Elfman, took to the stage (and rooftop) at NeueHouse in Hollywood Monday for the AMC show’s FYC event to share what it’s like for them to work on a series that not only explores Native American life without the stereotypes of shows from generations past but also why they think the series is resonating so strongly with audiences and what’s ahead for Season 4, which has already begun shooting.

“Authenticity is very important to us,” McClarnon told Gold Derby. “The books are written by Tony Hillerman, and we as...

‘Dark Winds’ Star Zahn McClarnon Speaks to Shared Trauma With His Character: “I’ve Been Through a Lot of Similar Things”
Image
Hundreds of fans packed NeueHouse Hollywood on Monday night for an Emmys FYC panel with the team behind AMC’s noir thriller series Dark Winds, including stars Zahn McClarnon, Jenna Elfman, Jessica Matten, Kiowa Gordon, Jeremiah Bitsui, Deanna Allison and executive producer John Wirth.

The show, now in its third season, follows the lives of Navajo law enforcement officers in the 1970s as they solve mysteries in the present and face trauma from their past. Gordon, who stars as Officer Jim Chee — a character with both Native American and Irish roots — told the audience that his role helped him to reconcile with his multi-ethnic heritage.

“I have taken a big part of my life and kind of translated and molded it into what [Chee] has gone through as a Navajo man. He’s supposed to be part Irish; I come from a multi-ethnic background. With my mom, I’m Hualapai from Arizona,...

The State of the Race

The Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series race has been even more of a rollercoaster than the actual drama series race, because of how the top contenders all aired so close to each other in the spring. Emmy Voters: Don’t Forget About Zahn McClarnon and ‘Dark Winds’: He’s Your Next Leading Man
Image
The third season of “Dark Winds” might be one of its best yet.

In the latest season, Zahn McClarnon’s Joe Leaphorn is tracking down a missing Native teenager who goes missing after his friend is murdered. At home, his wife Emma (Deanna Allison) is struggling to forgive him and decides to leave. Amid it all, Leaphorn is facing generational trauma and confronting his past.

Although the show has largely gone unrecognized by Emmy voters, there’s still time to consider the AMC thriller and McClarnon’s performance when it comes to drama categories.

Take episode 6, which revolves around a ketamine fever dream that sees Joe transported back in time, threading together three narrative threads: the traditional Navajo story of the Hero Twins facing the Ye’iitsoh; Joe’s present-day confrontation with a monster that’s been haunting him throughout Season 3; and the revelation of a deeply personal childhood trauma.

Zahn McClarnon leads ‘Dark Winds’ to critical acclaim — and a cultural breakthrough
Image
Dark Winds wrapped its critically acclaimed third season with a perfect 100 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes — a rare achievement that highlights the show’s powerful storytelling and cultural resonance. This AMC+ crime thriller stands out not only as a gripping procedural but also as a groundbreaking milestone in Indigenous representation, led by Zahn McClarnon and a predominantly Native American cast.

McClarnon’s portrayal of Joe Leaphorn, a Navajo police officer grappling with personal loss and complex community dynamics in 1970s New Mexico, is both nuanced and deeply human. In addition to his central role, McClarnon serves as executive producer and will soon take on directing duties, making his artistic vision essential to the series’ critical and cultural success.

While McClarnon has earned praise in supporting roles across prestige television — including his standout episode “Kiksuya” in Westworld and his chilling turn as Hanzee Dent in Fargo — Dark Winds marks his first lead role,...

Netflix is dropping 8 series and movies the last week of May
Image
The end of May brings sadness for Netflix subscribers. Ok, there is a lot of happiness, too. Many new series and movies will appear, but many are leaving. We will get to what is leaving before the first day of June later, and while only nine titles are leaving before then, some are pretty good.

One is the movie Burnt. If you liked The Menu, then you might love Burnt. So, those films are completely different, besides the fact that both involve cooking. Still, both are good. But in the Bradley Cooper-led Burnt, a chef has substance abuse issues he is trying to overcome. He might go into a downward spiral, but finds a new gig that changes his life.

It is kind of like The Bear, maybe. Only that Jeremy Allan White's Bear deals with a history of sadness instead of one where he has personal demons coping with drugs.
