5 Movies Kevin Spacey Turned Down and Regretted Instantly
Image
Kevin Spacey has not taken on a single role since 2017 due to his s*xual assault allegations, but this was not the case back in the day. The New Jersey-born actor was killing it in the 90s with action-packed roles like John Doe in David Fincher’s movie Se7en (1995), Kevin “Verbal” Kint in The Usual Suspects (1995) a movie by Bryan Singer, and Lester Burnham in American Beauty a film by Sam Mendes, to name just a few.

The actor has an amazing filmography and has bagged two Oscars as well. He is someone whose name in the cast would fill up theaters. However, even a great actor like Spacey can mess up in selecting his next role and miss out on movies that go on to become hits. This often happens in Hollywood—actors rejecting scripts or, at times, being rejected by casting crews or directors.

Let’s look at...

Maika Monroe's 'The Hand That Rocks the Cradle' Remake Gets Exciting Update From Martin Starr
Image
Martin Starr is building excitement for 20th Century Studios' upcoming remake of The Hand that Rocks the Cradle. The actor, who joined the film's cast in early December, recently shared that we're inching closer to seeing the Maika Monroe and Mary Elizabeth Winstead-led remake. During a recent interview, while promoting his short film Out for Delivery, Starr told Collider that filming for the new iteration of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle had wrapped, noting that shooting had occurred in December and January.

"It's a remake by a Mexican director named Michelle Garza [Cervera], who is incredibly talented. I don't know that I'm allowed to talk much about it, but I'm very excited about it. The process was incredible, the experience was incredible. She's amazing."

This adaptation of Curtis Hanson's 1992 film, which starred Rebecca De Mornay, Annabella Sciorra, Matt McCoy, Ernie Hudson, and Julianne Moore, is directed by...

'Hand That Rocks the Cradle' Remake's Martin Starr Gives an Update on the Film's Status
Image
It's been over 30 years, but audiences are finally about to get a remake of the 1992 thriller classic The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. Starring Annabella Sciorra, Rebecca De Mornay, Matt McCoy, Ernie Hudson, and Julianne Moore, the Hollywood Pictures production became a surprising hit with a $140 million box office haul as viewers came out in droves to see the chilling tale of a mother slowly infiltrating the family of her husband's accuser. As of last year, Longlegs star Maika Monroe is now set to take on the lead role at 20th Century Studios to recreate the magic and, according to her co-star Martin Starr, viewers are in for a real treat. In an interview for his short film Out for Delivery, he teased the upcoming thriller to Collider's Steve Weintraub at our SXSW Media Studio at the Cinema Center, revealing that filming had recently wrapped.

Bigfoot Meets ‘Rear Window’ in This Surprising Creature Feature Full of Horror Icons
Image
For many horror fans, no decade did it better than the 1980s. Sure, that was the slasher heyday, but there was so much more going on as well, from monster movies to wild body horror films. Two decades later, in 2006, three '80s horror legends reunited for writer and director Ryan Schifrin's Abominable. Among the cast are Dee Wallace (The Howling),Lance Henriksen (Pumpkinhead), and Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator), but it's Matt McCoy who is the true star in this fright fest that's part Rear Window and part monster movie, because the title is in reference to a killer sasquatch. Yep, Abominable is a Bigfoot movie, but don't roll your eyes just yet. Although Abominable is campy, it's also terrifying, with a fun story, and a creepy-looking beast you won't soon forget.

George Costanza's 5 Best Jobs On Seinfeld, Ranked
Image
Does any sitcom understand the universal human urge to be a slacker as well as "Seinfeld"? The classic NBC show played around with the careers of its four main characters often throughout its super-popular run, revealing them to be a bunch of half-assers, quiet quitters, and lazy opportunists, all while making their avoidance of work look admirable. Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld's show understood a universal truth that felt pretty daring coming out of the Reagan-era '80s: Work is super annoying and we shouldn't have to do it.

No character embodied the show's eye-rolling approach to careerism as well as Jason Alexander's George. George started the show with a fairly stable job in the real estate business (though he was originally going to be a comedian), and later scored a plum gig organizing travel for the New York Yankees. Between those two jobs, though, writers seemed to...

20 Year Later, The Syfy Monster Movie Abominable Still Holds Up
Image
Since the early 2000s, the Syfy channel has made a name for itself within the monster-movie sub-genre of horror. The network has produced countless creature features that are memorable, not for their high quality, but for their inexplicably entertaining low-budget films that are so bad they morph into hilarious romps audiences can't get enough of. Despite greenlighting famously cheesy franchises like Sharknado and mediocre must-see flicks like Frankenfish, one of Syfy's original films ditches the corniness for creating a worthwhile watch.

Written and directed by Ryan Schifrin, Abominable first premiered in theaters on April 10, 2006, and was released on DVD in October of that year. Following a tragic climbing accident of the now paraplegic widower Preston Rogers (Matt McCoy), the film expertly confronts grief through the fear of the unknown. Throughout its runtime, Schifrin's work includes convincing characters, realistic special effects, and a terrifying creature reveal that leaves audiences never...

Maika Monroe to lead The Hand That Rocks The Cradle remake
Rebecca De Mornay, Annabella Sciorra, Matt McCoy, and Madeline Zima in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992)
The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, a 1992 thriller about a nanny who operates way outside of her job description, is set to be Maika Monroe’s next leading role in the wake of Longlegs’ success.

The 1990s was a vintage era for thrillers, especially of the domestic variety. Whether it was neighbours, tenants, or the friendly neighbourhood cop suddenly revealing a dark side, the decade made it clear to audiences that suburbia wasn’t as cosy as they thought.

Films like Arlington Road, Pacific Heights and Unlawful Entry are all successful examples of the 90s thriller, but one film that really caught the imagination of audiences was 1992’s The Hand That Rocked The Cradle, directed by Curtis Hanson and starring Rebecca De Mornay as a nanny who gets a bit too close to the family she’s caring for.

Also starring Annabella Sciorra, Matt McCoy and Ernie Hudson, the domestic...

1992 Psychological Thriller Movie Is Getting A Remake With Longlegs Star
Rebecca De Mornay, Annabella Sciorra, Matt McCoy, and Madeline Zima in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992)
1992's The Hand That Rocks the Cradle is getting a remake featuring one of the stars of Longlegs. The original 1990s psychological thriller followed a young mother named Claire Bartel (Annabella Sciorra) who finds herself targeted by Mrs. Mott (Rebecca De Mornay), the widow of her abusive doctor, who poses as a nanny in an attempt to kill her and take over her family. The movie, which also starred Matt McCoy, Ernie Hudson, and Julianne Moore, earned $140 million against its roughly $12 million budget, becoming the ninth highest-grossing title at the domestic box office for the year.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Maika Monroe has signed on to play the twisted nanny in a 20th Century Studios remake of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, which is now in development. This is the star's first major casting since playing the lead role of Lee Harker in the 2024 horror hit Longlegs. The movie,...

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle remake is set to star Maika Monroe
Image
Maika Monroe has earned genre icon status with her roles in thrillers and horror movies like Longlegs, God Is a Bullet, Watcher, Flashback, Villains, Tau, Bad Blood, Flying Monkeys, It Follows, and The Guest. When she ventures into dark territory, she often plays the heroine – but she’ll be shifting into villain mode for the remake of the 1992 psychological thriller The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (watch it Here). The remake is coming our way from director Michelle Garza Cervera (Huesera: The Bone Woman) and screenwriter Micah Bloomberg, whose credits include Sanctuary and Homecoming.

Directed by Curtis Hanson from a screenplay written by Amanda Silver, the original The Hand That Rocks the Cradle has the following synopsis: When she was assaulted by her doctor, Claire Bartel reported him to the police, and rather than go to prison for his crime, he killed himself. The shock of the accusations and suicide...

The Star Trek: Tng Episode That Predicted DS9 & Voyager
Image
Star Trek: Tng's "The Price" introduced a wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant, which is one of the concepts key to Deep Space Nine. The wormhole turns out to be an unstable passage to the Delta Quadrant. which is a plot device in Star Trek: Voyager's premiere. "False Profits" in Star Trek: Voyager served as a sequel to "The Price," connecting the Ferengi officers' storylines across series.

One episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation predicted main plot points of both Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. Following the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the USS Enterprise-d, Tng ushered in a golden era for the Star Trek franchise. Captain Picard and his crew soon became almost as popular as the characters of Star Trek: The Original Series, and Tng laid the groundwork for much of what came after. Bobby Moynihan, Chris Parnell & Maria Bamford Star In Morgan Evans’ Comedy Feature ‘Micro Budget’
Image
Exclusive: Micro Budget is a comedy feature about an aspiring director who recklessly moves himself and his nine-months-pregnant actress wife from Iowa to LA to shoot a low-budget indie movie and sell it to a streamer for a “fuck-ton of money”. Sound familiar?

Saturday Night Live alum Bobby Moynihan and Chris Parnell and Lady Dynamite’s Maria Bamford star in the film, which is the debut feature from Morgan Evans, who wrote animated feature Merry Little Batman for Amazon/MGM.

Newcomers Emilea Wilson (Alternatino With Arturo Castro) and Patrick Noth (The Iliza Shlesinger Sketch Show) also star.

The film centers on Terry Terrison (Noth), who plays the director, Documented by his cousin Devin’s (Evans) behind-the-scenes camera crew, Terry finds that the only thing standing between himself and his dream is, well, himself. The mockumentary skewers the world of show-business and the depths some maniacal auteurs will sink to in pursuit of their vision.

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Rebecca De Mornay, Annabella Sciorra, Matt McCoy, and Madeline Zima in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992)
Thirty-two years ago, the psychological thriller The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (watch it Here) reached theatres – and this one will always have a special place in my heart, because I remember catching a screening during its theatrical run. Little kid me sitting in a theatre, watching the story play out with my mom beside me. I even remember my mom gasping at the sight of something that happens in the film. Someone else who has an appreciation for the movie is my fellow JoBlo writer Lance Vlcek, and he felt it was time for this movie to get the Revisited treatment. So you can hear all about it by checking out the video embedded above!

DeepStar Six (1989) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
DeepStar Six (1989)
The episode of The Black Sheep covering DeepStar Six was Written, Narrated, and Edited by Lance Vlcek, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Sean S. Cunningham will always be primarily remembered for directing the original Friday the 13th, but he has taken the helm of some other movies that are worth checking out, like 1985’s The New Kids and the subject of the latest entry in our Black Sheep video series, DeepStar Six (get it Here).

Released in 1989 and often compared to its fellow ’89 release Leviathan (which has also gotten the Black Sheep treatment), DeepStar Six was scripted Geoff Miller and Lewis Abernathy – which is interesting because movies like Leviathan and DeepStar Six exist because James Cameron’s The Abyss was coming out the same year, and Abernathy and Cameron are pals. Abernathy even had an acting role in Titanic.

Every Counselor Troi Love Interest In Star Trek: Tng
Image
Deanna Troi had multiple romantic partners throughout Star Trek: The Next Generation, but her best love story was with Commander Riker. Troi's ability to sense emotions helped her excel as the ship's counselor and also aided Captain Picard in his interactions with new alien species. Troi and Riker's on-again-off-again romance lasted all seven seasons of Tng and continued through the films, culminating in their marriage and continued presence in Star Trek: Picard.

Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) may always have been Imzadi to Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), but she had her fair share of other romances on Star Trek: The Next Generation. One of Tng's most underrated characters, Troi became the heart of the show over the course of its seven seasons. Half-Betazoid and half-human, Deanna could sense the emotions of those around her. This not only helped her perform her duties as the ship's counselor on the USS Enterprise-d,...

The 10 Best Bigfoot Movies Ranked
Image
The best Bigfoot movies are about as elusive as the creature himself. Despite Hollywood's love for making films about ghosts, man-eating animals, ogres, and dragons, the industry has seemingly snubbed the mythical giant ape some call Sasquatch. But despite Tinsel Town's lack of love for the big guy, there have been some pretty interesting, unique, and downright scary Bigfoot movies, that, while not appealing to mainstream audiences, have been hits with genre fans. While there were movies about all the other horror monsters through the years, the first Bigfoot movie didn't even arrive until 1970.

This is despite the creature getting its first mention all the way back in the 1700s when stories of hairy creatures in the forests would scream loudly and steal livestock. This led to stories of shape-shifting creatures, adding a supernatural tint to the idea of the Bigfoot monsters. By the 1800s, there were stories in different parts of the world,...

Brian Presley & Brea Bee in Western Thriller 'Hostile Territory' Trailer
Brian Presley
"I hope you made peace with God..." Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for a new indie western titled Hostile Territory, joining the ranks of a growing set of westerns being made recently. Most of them are indies and most of them are forgettable, but they're making more and more these days. Set in post-civil war America, when a Union soldier is presumed dead, his children are mistakenly sent away on "the orphan train." This is a classic wild-west story of people uniting for the greater good, and children forced to grow up quickly. The Best Seinfeld Holiday Moments … Besides Festivus
Jerry Seinfeld
Seinfeld’s classic anti-holiday episode “The Strike” has been re-gifted so many times it is almost as annoying as the holiday itself. We’re taking a strike from Festivus, because that non-holiday was only one of the many moments Jerry and the gang destroyed festivities in ways black and white cookies could never fix.

Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld), Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), George (Jason Alexander), and Kramer (Michael Richards), have soiled baptisms, weddings, anniversaries, Thanksgiving dinners, Puerto Rican Day marches, and even Super Bowl parties, which gave birth to the very phrase “re-gifting.” They’ve mugged old ladies for chocolate babkas, punctured the Woody Woodpecker balloon in the Macy’s Day Parade, and even convinced a tenant association to pass on upgrading an apartment to a survivor of the Andrea Doria shipwreck during the holiday season. Without an airing of grievances, the rest of us are pretty much covered, and it doesn...

The Ice Road Review: Liam Neeson's Big Rig Delivers the Icy Action Goods
Image
Long haul truckers race to the rescue in an action-packed, blue-collar thriller. The Ice Road follows the frantic response to a mine collapse deep in the Canadian tundra. The tension remains taut throughout as the perspective switches back and forth from the trapped miners to the frozen road.

The story begins at a diamond mine near the arctic circle in Canada. René Lampard (Holt McCallany) goes underground to check methane readings in tunnel six. As he berates the miners for lax safety procedures, a methane pocket explodes and traps twenty-six men under tons of rubble. Mining Executive George Sickle (Matt McCoy) sees the explosion from his office. The company launches rescue operations, but cannot get to the miners.

Ice Road Truckers (2007)
‘The Ice Road’ Film Review: Liam Neeson Hauls a Load of Action Clichés
Ice Road Truckers (2007)
The idea of marrying the reality-tv staple “Ice Road Truckers” with the suspense classic “The Wages of Fear” — about long-haul drivers trying to get through treacherous mountain roads with a payload of nitroglycerin — isn’t a bad one in theory. In practice, however, “The Ice Road” is so often inept and heavy-handed that not even the reliable presence of Liam Neeson can rescue it.

Neeson has become a genre unto himself in recent years, starring in one movie after another about a regular guy (with a special set of skills) who finds himself in extraordinary circumstances. (This latest is his second in 2021 alone.) But while the Irish actor reliably hits both his marks and the bad guys, he’s doing so in a film that’s leadenly predictable when it’s not unintentionally laugh-out-loud funny.

Some of those laughs come from the screenplay by director Jonathan Hensleigh (“Kill the Irishman”), which trots out chestnuts like,...

This big, expensive and well-produced action-suspense Sci-fi epic mostly delivers on its promise to be Aliens at the bottom of the sea. At heart it’s a 1950s pulse-pounder with a bigger monster, a zillion times the budget and a script that does everything but make us care. We appreciate the likable characters but it’s too easy to predict who will ‘get it’ next. The realism factor is not bad at all, although the undersea explorer video training sessions should have given ‘how not to crack up under stress’ more emphasis. And can’t anybody properly mind those pesky nuclear bombs?

Bridget Jones’s Baby review
Simon Brew Published Date Monday, September 12, 2016 - 05:40

Sometimes, character wins. Whilst the basic framework of Bridget Jones’s Baby will be familiar to anyone who watched the excellent first film and the piss-poor second, what screenwriters Helen Fielding, Emma Thompson and Dan Mazer have appreciated here is that the core central character of Bridget Jones is their greatest asset. They are not shy about playing to that.

As such, Bridget Jones’s Baby wastes no time reintroducing us to Bridget, and Renee Zellweger wastes no time effortlessly slipping back into her most popular role. We encounter Bridget this time alone, single, and being woken up on her 43rd birthday. She’s working on a television news show that’s being overtaken by clickbait culture. She’s back to square one, still scribbling in her diary, just a decade on. And once more, she’s stuck. Déjà vu? Yep, and that’s the point.

“Hath No Fury Like a Woman Scorned”: Top 10 Damaged Divas in the Movies
Sure, we have all seen our share of an “Unstable Mabel” in cinema throughout the years. Some, more than others, do stand out in craziness, chaos and curiosity. These furious females in film–at least the ones that we will spotlight in this particular movie column–have something to their off-kilter filter that dares to dig deep on so many psychological levels of frivolity and fury.

In Hath No Fury Like a Woman Scorned: Top 10 Damaged Divas in the Movies we will examine some of the warped women on the big screen that have a sense of demented diva-like dimensions to their cockeyed characterizations. These mistresses of misbehaving all demonstrate various kinds of detachment and dysfunction that capture our puzzling imaginations. Are there perhaps even stronger and more memorable bombastic she-beasts that have a certain score to settle against their detractors or society as a whole? Of course. However, the...

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in True Detective (2014)
'True Detective' hits the reset button, but is it too late to matter?
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in True Detective (2014)
A review of tonight's "True Detective" coming up just as soon as I take a micronap... In trying to convince Ray to join the new, covert incarnation of the Caspere task force, Ani tells him that it's never too late to start over again. It may not be too late for Ray Velcoro and doing the right thing, but I fear it may be for me and "True Detective." "Other Lives" is as close to a clean slate as you can get midway through an eight-episode season. The time jump isn't anywhere near as drastic as the two from Rust and Marty's case last year, but those 66 days since the shootout has upended the status quo for all four main characters — Paul now a hero and a detective, Ray now working security for Frank, Frank now living in a much smaller house in Glendale, and Ani getting the Lt. Daniels...

Silicon Valley Recap: “Binding Arbitration”
And we’re back. After the mediocre-at-best “White Hat/Black Hat” found Pied Piper losing the porn business that could have saved them, Silicon Valley's “Binding Arbitration” plumbs far more morally complex material as a simple twist of fate suddenly gives Richard and Pied Piper the upper hand in their court case with Hooli. After being confronted at a restaurant by two resentful Nucleus employees, who understand that he does next to nothing, Big Head notices one of them has left their Hooli phone under their plate, which has the beta version of Nucleus on it. The phone is proof of Gavin Belson’s egotistical emptiness, that he’s been spending millions on a piece of tech that not only doesn’t work but seems to actually damage other parts of the smart phone. This results in a rather hysterical phone meeting between Richard and Gavin, in which both...
