Musicals and horror have a surprisingly deeper connection than you’d imagine. After all, “Sweeney Todd” is a masterpiece about a serial killer and cannibalism; “The Phantom of the Opera” is about a disfigured madman stalking a soprano and murdering standersby. So placing “Rosemary’s Baby” prequel “Apartment 7A” within the world of ’60s Broadway makes sense beyond just central character Terry Gionoffrio’s career as a dancer.

We meet Terry (played by Victoria Vetri) in “Rosemary’s Baby” for a brief scene before her abrupt death by defenestration. Here, she’s played by Julia Garner as an ambitious counterpart to John Cassavetes’ eager actor, Guy, in Roman Polanski’s film. Sidetracked by a career-threatening injury and taken in by those insidious old devil worshippers the Castavets, Terry finds her life — and career — on the upswing. So what if it takes a little tannis root to get cast in a Broadway musical?...

The Arthur Freed MGM musical unit gives this 1927 musical remake the old College Try! It’s a vehicle for the wartime sweetheart June Allyson, aided by Peter Lawford, who is quite good if not real musical material. The fun original tunes are joined by a couple of new ones, including an all-time terrific song & dance number staged by Robert Alton and performed by the incredible Joan McCracken. The new restoration does wonders with the 1947 Technicolor and the Wac adds hilarious, eye-opening musical excerpts from the crazy 1930 early talkie version with Penny Singleton. Good news indeed. With Patricia Marshall, Mel Tormé and Tommy Rall.

To fumble as a choreographer on “Fosse/Verdon,” FX’s sterling limited series depicting the life, love and legacy of Bob Fosse and Gwen Vernon, would be failing while standing in the brightest of spotlights, exposed to the most savage of television, film, dance, and theater critics.

To succeed would be to risk not being noticed at all.

That was the challenge entered into by three-time Tony winner and “Fosse/Verdon” co-producer Andy Blankenbuehler (“Hamilton”), who painstakingly choreographed the series’ first three episodes, and then taken up by actress and Broadway veteran Susan Misner (“The Americans”) who stepped in when Blankenbuehler heeded the (cat) call and departed the production to head up choreography on Tom Hooper’s “Cats.”

As it happened, Misner was already signed on to “Fosse/Verdon,” portraying Fosse’s first wife, actress Joan McCracken, when she got a call from Blankenbuehler about expanding her responsibilities on the series.

Susan Misner plays the important role of Joan McCracken, legendary choreographer/director Bob Fosse’s second wife, in the FX limited series “Fosse/Verdon.” But that was by no means the trickiest thing Misner had to do on the adventurous eight-part series, which uses the style of Fosse’s own work to tell the story of the charged professional and personal relationship between Fosse (Sam Rockwell) and dancer, actress and choreographer Gwen Verdon (Michelle Williams).

No, it’s Misner’s offscreen job that provided the real challenge on “Fosse/Verdon.” The New Jersey-born actress has lots of movies under her belt, and she’s danced in several of them, including the Oscar-winning “Chicago” in 2002. But she’s never before been credited as a choreographer on screen — and there has to be something terribly daunting...

Susan Misner is a seasoned performer, as both an actress and dancer, on both stage and screen. Her work on FX’s Fosse/Verdon allowed her to indulge in both vocations. In the FX limited series about the relationship between Bob Fosse (Sam Rockwell) and Gwen Verdon (Michelle Williams), Misner starred as Fosse’s second wife Joan McCracken. She also choreographed four episodes of the series. In our exclusive interview (watch the video above), Misner talks about digging into both McCracken’s tragic life and putting her own voice into Fosse’s legendary dancing style.

Misner says her first exposure to both Fosse and Verdon was while watching the film version of “Damn Yankees,” which marked the pair’s first collaboration. Misner remembers watching both the couple in the now-famous “Who’s Got the Pain” number: “I was quite young when I saw that, and it was my first ‘falling in love’ moment with them.

Gwen and Bobby's first meeting is dissected on Fosse/Verdon Season 1 Episode 2, and every scene plays like the seductive striptease Bobby imagined for Whatever Lola Wants from Damn Yankees.

The way the musical numbers get tossed in around vignettes from their first collaboration and the beginning of their romance is reminiscent of their greatest works on stage.

The editing for Fosse/Verdon is just spectacular. 

The way scenes from different eras intercut to glean even more meaning out of each gives depth to the relationship between Gwen and Bobby and shows how beneficial hindsight can be when you're lucky enough to have it.

The juxtaposition of the end of Gwen and Bobby's marriage against their burgeoning relationship and how Bobby's marriage to Joan McCracken ultimately ended in much the same way things went south with Gwen is haunting.

When we first meet the main characters of FX’s new limited series Fosse/Verdon, stage and screen director-choreographer Bob Fosse (Sam Rockwell) assumes such control over his wife, the dancer Gwen Verdon (Michelle Williams), that he moves her body into the position he wants. FX's new series Fosse/Verdon has its subjects right there in the title: legendary choreographer Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon, the dancer who inspired much of his most iconic work. The duo's professional relationship led to some of the most memorable work in contemporary musical theater and dance, and their off-stage relationship was also well-known for its passion and volatility. While Verdon was probably Fosse's most famous romantic partner, she certainly wasn't his only one. Fosse married (and divorced) three times in his life, as well as having a serious girlfriend for six years near the end of his life. His wives have gotten overshadowed by his legacy, but all of them were remarkable in their own rights.

Fosse's first wife was Mary Ann Niles, who also was his first dance partner. They married in 1947 and made their New York City stage debut in Call Me Mister a few years later.

FX’s Bob Fosse-Gwen Verdon miniseries is already trying to steal the spotlight. Just as the 2019 Golden Globes began on Sunday, the network dropped Fosse/Vernon‘s first trailer, giving us a tantalizing look at Michelle Williams (as Verdon) and Sam Rockwell (as Fosse) in action.

Premiering in April, the drama chronicles the partnership of Broadway legends Fosse and Verdon. “He was a filmmaker and one of theater’s most influential choreographers and directors; she was the greatest Broadway dancer of all time,” per a release from FX. “Together, they changed the face of American entertainment — at a perilous cost.

Jane the Virgin co-star Jaime Camil is casting a musical spell on Charmed: The actor will guest-star on the witchy new CW drama as Mr. Morales, “the brash and eccentric new Music Director of Hilltowne University’s a capella group,” EW.com reports.

And that’s just the beginning of the Jane the Virgin connections: Camil’s episode will be directed by Jane herself, actress Gina Rodriguez. (The two shows share an executive producer in Jennie Snyder Urman.)

FX has set the main cast for the eight-episode limited series “Fosse/Verdon,” Variety has learned.

The series is based on the biography “Fosse” written by Sam Wasson and tells the story of the romantic and creative partnership between Bob Fosse (Sam Rockwell) and Gwen Verdon (Michelle Williams).

Norbert Leo Butz has been cast in the series regular role of Paddy Chayefsky, while Margaret Qually will appear in the series regular role of Ann Reinking.

FX has rounded out the cast as production begins on Fosse/Verdon (new official title), its high-profile eight-episode limited drama series starring Oscar winner Sam Rockwell and Oscar nominee Michelle Williams in the title roles, from award-winning producers Thomas Kail, Steven Levenson, Lin Manuel-Miranda and Joel Fields, FX Television Studios and FX Productions. Production on the series is currently underway in New York City ahead of its spring 2019 premiere on FX.

Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams will star in and produce an FX limited series Fosse/Verdon with Lin-Manuel Miranda producing.

FX isn't willing to let its strangehold of the Best Limited Series category at the Golden Globes and Emmys go any time soon. The network has announced a star-studded limited series called Fosse/Verdon that will tell the real life story of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon. Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams will star as the titular duo.

“We are over the moon about this dream team we’ve assembled for this incredible series,” FX Co-President of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions Nick Grad said in a statement. “Tommy, Steven, and Lin are the perfect team to tell the story of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon, and we’re so thrilled to have Sam and Michelle playing these iconic roles.”

Among the perennial Christmas songs, one of the most performed and popular is Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, with words and music by Hugh Martin, who has died aged 96. Since it was first sung by Judy Garland in the film Meet Me in St Louis (1944), this bittersweet yuletide ditty has been performed by hundreds of artists from Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Doris Day and Bing Crosby to rock bands including Coldplay and Twisted Sister.

The song has featured in several other films, notably The Victors (1963), in which the Sinatra version is used ironically during the execution of an American soldier for treason; The Godfather (1972); When Harry Met Sally (1989); Home Alone (1990); Miracle On 34th Street (1994); and Donnie Brasco (1997). In 1989, the song received the award for most-performed feature-film standard from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
