A spin-off from the classic ABC sitcom "Perfect Strangers," "Family Matters" didn't take long to captivate viewers, showcasing the hilarious day-to-day lives of Chicago cop Carl Winslow (Reginald VelJohnson), his wife Harriette (Jo Marie Payton), and the rest of their family. Along with shows such as "Full House" and "Step by Step," the sitcom was a reliable mainstay of ABC's "Tgif" lineup from 1989 to 1997. By 1998, though, the show had moved to CBS for its final season, and it had clearly seen better days; it had long felt like "the Steve Urkel show," with said breakout character (Jaleel White) pretty much overshadowing the "family" in "Family Matters." And it wasn't quite the same family anymore, as Judyann Elder replaced Payton in the role of Harriette for the show's last nine episodes.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in 2017, Payton revealed why she made the decision to leave "Family Matters" after eight seasons and change playing the Winslow matriarch.

Jaleel White played Steve Urkel in the ABC sitcom Family Matters for nine seasons, but don’t expect the actor to revisit the role if it’s just a “cash grab.”
In a new interview, White revealed that he shot down reprising his role of the annoying next-door neighbor in a possible reboot of the sitcom that was part of the Tgif block of programming.
“I embrace the Tgif legacy, but I’m also careful to acknowledge that Tgif was a sinking ship, and you cannot make shows like that right now,” White said on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live. “I feel like [Fuller House] got away with it because they have a schmaltzy, kind of vanilla thing that they do that’s very Hallmarkish to be quite honest and it benefits Candace [Cameron Bure] and that’s wonderful, but I just didn’t feel like we could get away with that same brand of humor.

Many classic sitcoms from years past have been revived with new sequel shows, but don't expect Family Matters to get the same treatment. Jaleel White, who rose to fame as the former child star who played breakout character Steve Urkel, has explained why it's better to leave Family Matters back in the past as a product of its time.
Per People, the actor commented on a possible revival while speaking to fans during his "The Evolution of Jaleel White" panel at 90s Con 2024. He explained that while he loves Family Matters, he's just not confident in a potential revival's prospects of success. Part of that has to do with losing some cast members who've since passed away, including Michelle Thomas in 1998 and Rosetta LeNoire in 2002. White also feels that a show about Urkel as a happily married adult wouldn't be as intriguing as following the character when he was younger and faced more challenges.

Family Matters started off with underwhelming ratings but gained success due to the introduction of the character Steve Urkel, who became the breakout star. Steve Urkel's catchphrase, "Did I do that?" became widely known and helped make Family Matters a memorable part of 1990s TV. After declining ratings and network changes, Family Matters continued to find audiences through syndication and streaming platforms like Hulu and Max

2020 sucked, but at least we had the ’90s sitcom “Family Matters.”
The former T.G.I.F. sitcom, which aired on ABC from 1989-1998, saw a massive uptick in minutes watched last year, according to a Nielsen study. All told, “Family Matters,” was watched for nearly 11.4 billion minutes, up a whopping 392% from 2019’s tally of 2.3 billion minutes.
Yes, we did that. (Shoutout to you Urkel fans.)
That viewership, like all in this story, includes everyone age 2 or older — a giant demo generally referred to as “total viewers.”
“Family Matters,” which features an all-Black cast, follows the Winslow family as they deal with various misadventures, many of them caused by their pesky next-door neighbor, ultra-nerd Steve Urkel (Jaleel White).
The show also starred Reginald VelJohnson, Kellie Shanygne Williams, Darius McCrary, Jo Marie Payton and Rosetta LeNoire. “Family Matters” ran for 215 episodes. More episodes means more opportunity for racking up big viewership minutes.

Exclusive: We’ll be seeing a slew of music industry icons and visionaries portrayed in the upcoming second season of American Soul, the Don Cornelius-infused period drama, set for premiere on Bet in 2020.
American Soul takes an unflinching look at the entrepreneur, his Soul Train dancers, crew and musicians in an unforgiving Hollywood in the 1970’s – how they work, play, rise and fall against the backdrop of Soul Train — “the hippest trip in America” and one of the most predominant television shows for African American culture.
Inspired by the personal trials and professional successes of a young, ambitious and troubled impressario Cornelius, season two of the period drama picks up two years later in 1975. As Don, played by Sinqua Walls, becomes a rising star, he continues to manage an assortment of spectacular talent that comes to his show, a shaky family life, personal health and perhaps most importantly, his own ego.

HBO's "The Leftovers" just concluded an incredible second season. (Here's my review of the finale.) As a bookend to the long and candid conversation we had two months ago, I spoke with the series' co-creator Damon Lindelof about many of the big decisions going into the finale, about all the hard work and tough choices required for a season this good, and his thoughts about the show's precarious future, coming up just as soon as a temple closes on Christmas... Let's start with a meta question: why are we doing this interview? A year ago, you didn't want to do any post-mortems. You wanted to let the show speak for itself. You did a bunch at the start of this season, you talked to Mo Ryan last week, and are doing a few like this for the finale. Why did you decide to be a little bit more out there this year?...

As HitFix Harpy has covered before, “Minority Report” takes the future very seriously. From accurately reflecting racial demographics based on scientific predictions to extrapolating the future of technology with the help of MIT, the show is trying to ground themselves in the science side of science-fiction. "The Leftovers" is back. I already published a very long (and even more thoughtful) interview with Damon Lindelof, and wrote a review of the first few episodes. Now I have thoughts on the season premiere itself, coming up just as soon as I ask for my bacon on a separate plate... "Something bad is gonna happen... to you." -Isaac All of this has happened before, and all of it will happen again. No, "The Leftovers" didn't suddenly morph into a "Battlestar Galactica" spin-off — even though ("BSG" finale spoilers) both eventually wound up in caveman times — but watching the crazy, stunning prologue to season 2, it was hard not to think of Ronald D. Moore's pet phrase. We knew the series was going to relocate this year, and all change can be disorienting, but to open the new season not only a few thousand miles away from Mapleton, but millennia upon millennia in the past?...

"The Leftovers" -- arguably HBO's most depressing but still addictive show -- introduced us to The Sudden Departure, when 2 percent of the world's population (aka 140 million people) just disappeared at once for unknown reasons. The first season was led by Justin Theroux in fictional Mapleton, New York, and HBO just shared the first tease for Season 2, which is taking us to the small town of Jarden, Texas.
The 55-second tease shows us a line of cars in bumper-to-bumper traffic under blazing desert skies, leading up to a sign for Jarden, Texas. Why is this place special? Well, as the sign notes, they had no Departures. As HBO noted with the video, "No country, no state, no city was spared, except for one small town in eastern Texas. Population: 9261. Departures: Zero."
