Praise for Ozzy Osbourne and the legacy he established through the heavy-metal mainstay Black Sabbath, as well as his later turn as an open collaborator and music industry legend, is pouring in following the musician’s death at age 76. Throughout his career, Osbourne shared the stage and the studio with genre- and generation-spanning collaborators, including Slash, Elton John, Motörhead, and Madonna, as well as Busta Rhymes, Yungblud, and Post Malone. Both his range and influence were expansive, heavily rooted in blazing a trail, leading the adventure, and living to tell the tale.

When Amanda Knox was locked away in an Italian prison in 2007 for a murder she didn’t commit, she’d find solace in singing. “Most of the people in prison knew my voice before they knew who I was,” she says; she favored sad songs by folks like Joanna Newsom and Regina Spektor. “People would hear me sing, and then they would yell down the hallway to hear certain songs. So I was basically like the jukebox for a while.” After a prison priest taught her how to play piano,...

When Sinéad O’Connor tore up a photo of the pope on Saturday Night Live in 1992 to draw attention to child sexual abuse in the Catholic church, just about everyone turned their back on her. She was banned for life by NBC, belittled by late-night comedians, often in painfully misogynistic ways, and even threatened with violence by Frank Sinatra. The one person who came to her aid in the days that followed was Kris Kristofferson. Kristofferson died Saturday at 88.

Pearl Jam transformed Ted Nugent’s “Stranglehold” into an anti-gun anthem while briefly covering the 1975 single during their concert in Baltimore on Thursday (September 12th).
Halfway through the latest show on Pearl Jam’s North American tour (get tickets here), guitarist Mike McCready launched into the instantly recognizable opening riff of “Stranglehold.” Eddie Vedder joined in shortly afterward to repeatedly sing, “I don’t own a gun, I don’t ever want to own a gun/ I don’t own a gun, never want to own a gun.”

Once they were done, Vedder didn’t comment any further on the song, and the band launched into their own classic “Even Flow.” Watch fan-shot footage below.

Experience the new Pearl Jam album in a unique cinematic way. The rock band has revealed a short promo trailer for Pearl Jam: Dark Matter, a one-night-only cinematic event this April. To celebrate the release of the new album, they're presenting an exclusive cinematic engagement: Pearl Jam – Dark Matter – Global Theatrical Experience – One Night Only. Viewers will be among the very first to hear the band's new record (called "Dark Matter") in cinemas around the world. This communal experience will play Dark Matter in its entirety twice: first in a dark cinema, then again with mesmerizing visuals. Artist Alexandr Gnezdilov created the cover of Dark Matter using a large self-made kaleidoscope with each letter visible on the cover individually captured, then handwritten midair with a specially designed flashlight to create the pearlescent effect. This is the same art seen in the visualization within this trailer. Produced by multi-Grammy award winning producer Andrew Watt,...

Pearl Jam have released a new single, “Dark Matter.” The rousing, guitar-heavy track is the title track and first listen off the rock band’s forthcoming 12th LP, out April 19 via Monkeywrench/Republic.
Dark Matter, a follow-up to 2020’s Gigaton, was produced Andrew Watt at Rick Rubin‘s Shangri-La studio in Malibu. It was recorded in three weeks. A news post on the band’s website notes that the recording “channels the shared spirit of a group of lifelong creative confidants and brothers in one room playing as if their very lives depended on it.

Mike McCready has provided an update on what’s next from Pearl Jam, assuring fans that their forthcoming album — produced by Andrew Watt — will be “a lot heavier than you’d expect.”
The guitarist offered some details about the album in a recent interview with Classic Rock, and although it’s yet to be announced, it sounds like the LP is just about complete: “I’m hoping it’s gonna come out [in 2024],” McCready said. “We have a bunch of songs tracked. We worked with Andrew Watt, who’s a younger pop producer-type guy, but he’s really a rock guy at heart — I think we’re his favorite band. When we were in the studio with him this past year, he really kicked our asses, got us focused and playing, song after song.”

The Dickies Arena concert was the latest stop on Pearl Jam’s brief 2023 tour (grab tickets here), clocking in at 27 songs and 155 minutes. The band played six tracks from the 1998 album, including the second performance of “Pilate” since 2018. They only played one song released after 1998, “Mind Your Manners” from 2013’s Lightning Bolt, and also performed covers of “Eruption” by Van Halen and The Who’s “Baba O’Riley.” Check out the full setlist below.

Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready has revealed he is drawing on his experiences in the Seattle grunge scene for a new rock opera. In an interview with Guitar World, the musician said the project is inspired by and honors the late Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell, who was also McCready’s bandmate in the supergroup Temple of the Dog.
“I look at him as one of the greatest singers and songwriters of all time, aside from being a friend,” McCready said about Cornell. “I love Chris and I’m working on a little project about the Seattle scene and a musical kind of rock opera thing. It’s just from my experience in the Seattle music scene, and he’s part of it.”

Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready is transforming the tragedies and triumphs of the Seattle grunge scene into a new rock opera, the guitarist told Guitar World magazine.
McCready offered the first taste of the project just last month when he shared a live performance of a new song, “Crying Moon,” which he wrote in tribute to Chris Cornell. The late Soundgarden frontman, as well as McCready’s friend and Temple of the Dog bandmate, is a primary influence for the new rock opera.

Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament has offered his own update on the next Pearl Jam album. During an appearance on Kyle Meredith With…, Ament said that while the band feels they’ve “earned the right to do whatever the fuck we want,” their latest effort isn’t quite done and “doesn’t feel like a record yet.”
The comments come just two weeks after Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard shared with Meredith that he felt the new album was “close to the finish line,” an assessment with which Ament gently disagrees. “The hardest part of [finishing] a record a lot of times is figuring out which songs go on the record and do we need to record another song and what’s the artwork and what’s the title and all that stuff,” Ament says, noting the band is planning on taking the rest of summer off with those questions left unanswered.

Pearl Jam were about halfway through their special concert for SirusXM at Harlem’s Apollo Theater on Saturday night when Eddie Vedder’s mind went to Bessie Smith’s residency at the venue way back in 1935. “She played here four weeks in a row at one point,” he told the audience. “She was the singer, so she was probably standing right where I’m standing. The legendary Ozzy Osbourne feels remorse for not making “more varied” music. While he is proud of the way Black Sabbath made heavy metal “big”, the rockstar said that he would have liked to have explored outside of the genre and produced some songs that were less “aggressive”, reports aceshowbiz.com.
“You know what, I would have liked to have been a little more varied,” he told The Sun newspaper when asked if he wished he had ever moved away from heavy metal.
“Black Sabbath music is very aggressive even if some of it is foot-tapping.”
“But we fought the f****** world to make it big. But mind you, it’s a good thing we didn’t get our royalties when we were 23 because I would have f***** myself into another planet.”
The 73-year-old singer said that there are some collaborations he’d loved to have been able to secure.

Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones has passed away, leaving many of his contemporaries in the music business feeling heartbroken over the news. On Tuesday, the band announced that Watts had died at the age of 80 in a London hospital surrounded by his family. Because Watts has been one of the most talented drummers of the past 60 years, he served as an inspiration for many, and that influence can be felt in the many, many tribute posts online.
Posting a reactionary video to Twitter, Paul McCartney of The Beatles said, "So sad to hear about Charlie Watts, the Stones drummer, dying. He was a lovely guy. I knew he was ill, but I didn't know it was this [bad]. Lots of love to his family, wife and kids and extended family, and condolences to the Stones. A huge blow to them, because Charlie was a rock and a fantastic drummer. Steady as a rock.
