The 2024 edition of the Kennedy Center Honors celebrated an eclectic assortment of entertainers Sunday night: filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, singer Bonnie Raitt, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and surviving members of the Grateful Dead. The organization also bestowed its honor on an entertainment venue for the first time, New York’s iconic Apollo Theater.
As per tradition, the honorees observed the proceedings from the presidential box in the Kennedy Center Opera House, accompanied by President Joe Biden, first lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and First Husband Doug Emhoff. Freshly arrived from a White House reception, all received rousing ovations from an appreciative audience when introduced.
That White House tradition could go on hiatus during the incoming Trump administration, since Donald Trump notably declined to participate in the affair during his first presidency. Nonetheless, invitations will be extended by the rigidly nonpartisan arts institution, the Kencen assures.
Slated to air on CBS Dec.

The hottest musical writer of recent years will reportedly be adapting the 1979 film, The Warriors, into a stage musical. Can You Dig It? The cult Walter Hill film is a popular urban grit fairy tale that tells of a night amongst the many number of gang factions in New York City. The movie was based on the 1965 novel of the same name by Sol Yurick and illustrated by Frank Modell. Many character actors were involved with the production in their younger days, including James Remar, who currently can be seen in Oppenheimer, David Patrick Kelly, Mercedes Ruehl, and Lynne Thigpen.
Variety now reports that a source close to the subject has confirmed that Lin-Manuel Miranda is in the works to adapt the movie into a stage musical. The film isn’t exactly West Side Story, but it does involve rivalry between street gangs. The plot of both the film and...

This post contains spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 4."
All right now, for all you boppers out there in /Film land — just how much movie is "John Wick: Chapter 4?" The answer is, "So, so much movie." For anyone looking at the film's runtime worried that it would be one simple story stretched out to a huge length, fret not — "Chapter 4" is an epic in the old-school sense of the term, hopping around the globe with its titular assassin (played once again with brooding intensity by Keanu Reeves) as he faces a series of new and increasingly difficult challenges.
The even more exciting icing on "Chapter 4's" gigantic action cake is that the film's third act could almost be its own self-contained movie. In a certain way, it already is: While the "Wick" films have traditionally made references and homages to a bevy of action cinema classics, the third act...

Anyone who saw singer Mandy Barnett playing the title role in Always… Patsy Cline or heard her splendid 2013 tribute LP to singer-songwriter Don Gibson is already aware of Barnett’s ability to deliver polished Nashville Sound classics with panache. The Tennessee native, who grazed the country charts in the late Nineties with Americana-ready material when that movement was in its infancy, earned considerable praise for her vocal range and should be well-positioned to do the same with regard to the breadth of material on her forthcoming album.

James Taylor is Martha’s Vineyard in the 1970s, campfire circles in the New England woods and sun-drenched barbecues in western Massachusetts. He’s Boston’s Fenway Park and preppy college frat parties in the 1980s and acoustic guitar by the Charles River on muggy summer nights. And today, Taylor, American folk-rock hero with over 100 million records sold worldwide and five Grammys to his name, remains, at age 70, one of the most impactful singer-songwriters in the American music canon, a wistful and winsome troubadour with sweeping cross-generational influence. Just ask any of the gangly tweens sitting cross-legged around a bonfire roasting marshmallows at sleepaway camp this summer while singing “You’ve Got a Friend,” the Carole King-penned classic included on “Tapestry” but made famous on Taylor’s 1971 album “Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon.”
